Unique among sounds, the blast of the shofar calls to us across the ages from the earliest days of our people s experience. The shofar awakens us from our proverbial slumber; it calls us to account and it stirs our souls. During the course of our High Holy Days we hear the sound of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah morning expressing our thoughts of Creation, of God s sovereignty, and of our collective memory. Then, once more, at the end of Yom Kippur, the shofar sound concludes our worship and sends us forth to yet another year in which we strive to merit inscription for blessing in the Book of Life. This year, in celebration of our TBI centennial, we are planning something very special for the conclusion of our Neilah (concluding) service on Yom Kippur. Imagine for a moment the sound of 100 Shofars sounding the final Tekiah Gedolah. What an exciting and fitting way to conclude our High Holy Day worship and celebrate our TBI 100th anniversary at the same time! If you own a shofar (or can borrow one) I invite and encourage you to be part of our 100 Shofarot conclusion of Yom Kippur. Please call the Temple office to let us know that you will participate. We will call all of our Shofar blowers to the bimah for the final Tekiah Gedolah. If you are a bit rusty in your Shofar sounding, not to worry! We are scheduling a practice session (a refresher course) with one of our professional Shofar blowers who will help you prepare (more info when you call to let us know of your participation). Also, plan to be with us on Rosh Hashanah morning at ETHS when we will kick off our Centennial year of celebration with a special Torah procession. Then, on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, worship with us at TBI when Sisterhood will lead us and share reflections on highlights from our first 100 years of TBI and of Sisterhood. Please remember: Tickets are not required for Selichot, 2nd Day Rosh Hashanah, or afternoon services on Yom Kippur dues must be current to receive tickets. Speak to a financial officer if you have questions. Additional ticket requests must be received in the Temple office by September 11th. Please note: This year we will begin to use a new machzor (holy day prayerbook). It comes as a set of books, one each for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The TBI price is $36 per set. Because TBI was able to get this discounted price by buying in bulk and then selling individual sets to our members, we must restrict your payment options to either check or cash (exact change requested); no credit card payments or billing will be possible. It will be necessary for every worshipper to acquire a copy of Mishkan Hanefesh. It will not be feasible to follow the service using our former machzor, The Gates of Repentance, and we will not have a supply of loaners. If you no longer desire to keep your copy of The Gates of Repentance, we will collect them at Temple. For additional information, please call the Temple office. FroM the PrEsidENt By Jon Schneider The history of the Jewish people is a history of communities. Jews have formed organizations and communities throughout their history. The center of the Jewish community has often been the synagogue, which began primarily as a Beit K nesset (House of Gathering), but eventually grew to being a Beit T fillah (House of Prayer) and a Beit Midrash (House of Study). Today Jews continue to build communities. We are lucky to be a part of a community with a long and storied history. Temple Beth Israel is now embarking upon our 100th year. During our 100 years, the world has seen 2 World Wars, the birth of the State of Israel, the resignation of a President. When TBI was born, women could not vote, much less celebrate a Bat Mitzvah. The world has changed dramatically as has our community. We have edged north from Albany Park to Skokie, all the while providing a community for a diverse membership to engage in active Jewish living. Completing 100 years as a Community is quite an achievement. Anyone who has run or worked at a business understands the accomplishment in keeping an organization vibrant and relevant for so many years. A Temple faces even more challenges than a for-profit business, and yet with our leadership, both lay and professional, we have been able to succeed and thrive for 100 years. Many of us have begun preparing for a year of celebration of our 100 years. Judy Kemp and Lisa Drucker have led the efforts and are continuing to work tirelessly to prepare for a wide range of activities honoring our history and looking forward to our next century. These activities will engage the entire congregation and will provide the theme to all our programming throughout our 100th year. There will be special activities led by our Social Action Council, special school projects, special religious services, art projects, and opportunities to celebrate, to learn, to study, to improve the world, and to have a good time, all related to our 100 Year Anniversary. 3 FroM the director of congregational LEarNiNg Beginning our centennial year is a very exciting time in the life of our congregation. For any institution to reach this milestone is noteworthy; for our community it is much more. We have so much to celebrate! Reaching this landmark is certainly worth a grand celebration. But it s not just that we have existed for 100 years; more important is our congregation s health and vibrancy, our rich programmatic life, and our engagement with the greater community. Over the course of the year there will be numerous ways for each and every member to participate in our centennial celebration. We are planning adult-only programs, family programs, and events that will take place in the school for our youngest members. Quite literally, there will be something for everyone. I am looking forward to celebrating with each of you as we make our way through our centennial year, honoring our past and lighting our way to our future. A full calendar of events for the centennial will appear as part of this year s Torah at TBI that will be distributed at the High Holy Day services. I urge you to attend as many of the special events as possible. This is quite literally a once in a lifetime opportunity and one worth marking through your participation. As we enter this New Year, our centennial year 5778, I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a joyous new year. May it be filled with much learning, love, health, and celebration. The deadline for the October bulletin is September 10. NEw Nosh NEws Bittersweet news and HUGE thanks to Neal Gussis and Helene Levine for the umpteen years of exceptional service at the Nosh Café. They managed, grew, organized, and promoted what has become an expected and delightful presence in our lobby Sunday after Sunday during the school year. Neal and Helene have passed the captain s hat to Rebecca Kohn who we know will do a great job leading the way. But she can t do it alone! Please reach out to Rebecca (rshirak@gmail.com) and offer to take on a shift or two or three. Food selections will include high quality and kid-friendly selections like Lynn Wolff Zaransky s amazing muffins and cookies and other homemade treats, as well as bagels and cream cheese, seasonal fruit favorites, popcorn, pretzels, and crackers. Hot chocolate, 100% fruit juices, and small bottles of water are beverage offerings. And look for Lori Sagarin to create a made-to-order omelet on special Sundays. What you won t see anymore? Candy, fruit snacks, and store-bought cookies. We would love donations of your own home-baked goods, fresh fruit, popcorn, and high-quality whole bean coffee. Bottom line: come and meet a new or old friend at the Nosh Café, hold committee meetings, and grab a cup of amazing coffee, tea, and a bit of breakfast as well. 4 sisterhood NEws At our recent Board Orientation, we started with an ice breaker. This year the women at each table took turns answering, What is your Jewish name and what is the story behind it? We thought that this would be an interesting topic for a brief conversation and then we would move on to the real substance of the orientation. (Yes, that means breakfast!) To the surprise of both the planners and the participants, this question opened a world of fond memories and funny and heartfelt stories. We could have gone on much longer. Storytelling is central to Jewish life. We learn about each other, our history, and ourselves. As we embark on the new year 5778, we invite you to connect the past with the present and future by reaching out to the women in your life, spending some quality time (without electronic devices), and having a conversation. Here are some questions to get you started: For whom are you named? For whom am I named? What was she or he like? How did you celebrate Jewish holidays? What special roles did the women in your family play in holiday preparations and observance? What has been important to you as a daughter? A sister? A life partner? A mother? A grandmother? A friend? A member of a community? What words of wisdom did your mother/grandmothers/aunts share with you? Women's roles in Judaism have changed dramatically over the past several decades. Have these changes had a personal impact on you? What do you think of them? We hope you take some time to have these conversations and that they leave you inspired, educated and enlightened. Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year made that much sweeter by the stories you hear from the women in your lives.
