Rabbi s Column I am pleased to share the news with you that our Temple Board of Trustees has unanimously approved the recommendation of our congregation s Jewish Life Council that we adopt Mishkan HaNefesh as our congregation s High Holyday prayerbook. The very title of this new Machzor reveals our purpose in coming together for High Holyday worship. The words mean: Sanctuary of the Soul. We come together on the High Holydays so that each of us can make a journey deep into the sanctuary, the holy place, of our own souls. We come together to support each other in that individual journey of cheshbon hanefesh (accounting of the soul) and teshuva (repentance) and for that collective journey of renewal and we begin yet another Jewish year. This coming September we will kick off our Temple Beth Israel centennial year and what better way to do that than with a new Machzor a High Holyday prayerbook that maintains our connections to our heritage and points us toward a new and dynamic destiny: our second century! Change is often challenging even when it is refreshing and renewing. We have been using The Gates of Repentance as our Machzor for more than 35 years and we have become accustomed to it. It may take us a little while to become accustomed to Mishkan Hanefesh. I am confident that with the good will, patience, and cooperation of our entire community we will make the transition in the smoothest way possible. Rest assured that our High Holyday choir will continue to enhance our worship with the beautiful music and the familiar melodies that make our services so inspirational. Now to the logistics. It will be necessary for every worshipper to acquire a copy of Mishkan Hanefesh. Since it will not be feasible to follow the service using our former Machzor, The Gates of Repentance, we will not have a supply of loaners available. Temple Beth Israel will be purchasing the books in bulk and then making them available to our congregants at a significant discount off the retail price. Mishkan Hanefesh is a two-volume set (one for Rosh Hashanah and one for Yom Kippur) that we will be able to sell for about $35. Our plan is to have them available for sale, beginning soon after Pesach, in the Temple office during regular weekday office hours and in the Temple foyer on Sunday mornings for cash or check only. We hope that you will decide to buy the new prayerbook early, to give you time to get acquainted with it. In addition to the regular prayers, there are many inspiring passages for personal study and reflection. Later in the summer, our Jewish Life Council will be sharing more thoughts on getting ready to use Mishkan Hanefesh for the coming High Holyday season. I look forward to sharing with you this new journey into the sanctuary of our souls and our celebration of our centennial year. April 2017 Nisan Iyar 5777 Volume 100 Number 6
2 in the temple FaMiLY MAzEL TOV TO: Rozanne & Stephen Epstein on the Bat Mitzvah of granddaughter, Hannah Epstein, daughter of Jennifer & Michael Epstein. Lee Schur on the birth of great grandson, Charles Foster Schur. ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY: The following Temple member is recovering from recent illness: Seth Kramer. We wish him a speedy recovery. CONDOLENCES: We note with sorrow the passing of Miriam Rosen, mother of Fran Meyer. May her memory be a blessing. congregational thanks Thank you to our Temple community for the meals, visits, donations, and support after the passing of Richard s mother, Joan. We were truly overwhelmed and appreciative of the warmth and compassion from our TBI family. We are grateful to be a part of this community. Richard & Linda Perlin FroM the PrEsidEnt By Linda Perlin What do you think when you see me walking down the street? Do you have preconceived notions because I am white? I don t look Jewish (so I ve heard throughout my life). Once in college, after returning to a class I had missed due to a Jewish Holiday, a classmate asked me why I hadn t attended the last lecture. I told her I had been out for the Jewish holiday. She said, I didn t know you were Jewish. You don t look Jewish. I never met a Jew before. After that, her attitude towards me changed; she never spoke to me again. What do you think when you pass an African American youth on the street wearing a hoodie? Are your thoughts different from when you see a white youth dressed the same way? And a Muslim dressed in hijab, or a Sikh wearing a turban? Do you notice more than you used to in public places? Are the things that grab your attention the result of increased vigilance as to what seems out of place or preconceived notions about who poses a threat? We are born without opinions and yet we develop biases. How do we become biased, racist or prejudiced? Perhaps it is the influence of family and friends or perhaps it is media depictions of ethnic, religious, and racial groups. Why do we form stereotypes and how do they become harmful? Alternatively, could stereotypes facilitate a way to celebrate our differences rather than for us to judge others, or be judged by others? In a 2014 TED Talk Sarah Jones explores this question (Google Sarah Jones Stereotyping and select the first link.) Jones is an actor and playwright and has the gift of being able to mimic, with uncanny precision, a wide range of ethnic voices. Spend the 12 minutes it takes to listen to the show; you won t regret it. Jones starts by challenging our sense of propriety. Why can t we portray a Latina as a domestic worker or an Italian as a cop? That in itself is not the problem. Where it starts to get tricky is where I am assigning some sort of moral judgment to a person s background or job. Stereotyping is taking what is true and oversimplifying it in a way that seeks to oppress or marginalize groups of people. Sarah attended the International School in New York which provided her with a wealth of material. She likes to portray people as honestly as I can in a way that s true to honor their basic humanity. I try not to strip away what is actually there. When asked about offending people, Jones says that the way we see each other and our differences, we are way overthinking it. There needs to be less pontificating, brow furrowing, and nervous hand wringing. We need honest conversations. They are not always pleasant. Sarah concludes saying that suppressing these discussions is not productive. In a similar way, the literary device of parody can be used to light heartedly laugh at our differences and our own peculiarities. In this year s TBI Purim Shpiel, the TBI Players demonstrated how this tool could be used to good comic effect, with no intent to offend or marginalize. Just over 75 years ago, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which provided for the relocation and confinement in military facilities of those whom military commanders deemed a threat to national security. While this order did not, on its face, target those of Japanese ancestry, the execution of the order focused on that group. About 120,000 people of Japanese descent, living in certain areas of the west coast, were relocated to bleak facilities, leaving behind their homes, businesses, jobs, and most possessions. While the order was enforced against small numbers of Germans and Italians, it disproportionately affected those of Japanese descent. People of Japanese descent looked different from and had been regarded with suspicion by their neighbors. In Hawaii, where about 40% of the population was of Japanese descent and where the attack on Pearl Harbor took place, there was no relocation. This demonstrated that the detentions were based on prejudice and racism, not misconceived military necessity. Enslavement of a group of people, whether in our nation or in ancient Egypt, represents an extreme form of racial or ethnic prejudice. In modern times, the most sinister example of racial hatred was the Shoah. However, other terrible actions by those in authority, directed against ethnic, racial, religious, or political groups, unfortunately have also transpired in modern times. In all these examples the common thread is that the differences between us are used by hateful people to promote irrational fears. By celebrating our differences, rather than pretending they don t exist, suspicion declines and hopefully so do the actions that derive from irrational suspicion. Taking our national security seriously is an important matter, but yielding to impulses not based in evidence or logic reduces both our security (by side-stepping real threats) and our humanity. We will soon be celebrating Pesach. At this year s Seder table, let us be reminded that our differences, whether racial, religious, political, or other, are not nearly as great as what we share in common. Chag Sameach! attention journalists and aspiring journalists! reminder: Material for the bulletin is due electronically to Barbara Seaver at Bulletin@TBISkokie.org on the 10th of the month prior to publication. If you do not have access to a computer, please submit paper copy to the Temple office by the 7th of the month prior to publication so that it can be transcribed and sent by the 10th. The deadline for the May bulletin is April 10.
3 FroM the director of congregational LEarning Passover is truly the most anticipated of Jewish festivals. Falling at the end (usually!) of a long midwestern winter, the time of renewal and hope is one we can all appreciate. The task of preparing for the holiday can seem daunting but it is also an opportunity to clean up and clean out while involving your kids. In education we use a technique called set induction. This involves activities that are used to introduce a lesson in a creative manner. We can introduce Passover in a similar way and Judaism has already created these ideas for us. B dikat Chametz, the search for the last remaining chametz (bread products): Even if you don t clear out your house, you can certainly clean out your cabinets. This ritual is so much fun for kids. You hide little piles of bread products (bread crumbs work great) for your kids to find as they are cleaning out a drawer in the kitchen, or wiping out a cabinet filled with pots and pans. Traditionally, one uses a feather and wooden spoon for the gathering and subsequent burning of the last remaining bread stuff, but anything will do. Matzoh ball making: In our home, this has always been the kids job. From the time they were very young, we taught them to make the matzoh balls. And in the tradition of Alice B. Toklas, Eliana s mistake of putting the batter in the freezer for 15 minutes and not the fridge turned into the fluffiest matzoh balls ever..and now the freezer is our go-to! Decorating the table: If you are like me, the setting/decorating of the table is the most daunting part of the holiday. For years I relegated this to my kids and they loved it. Pyramids out of sugar cubes, origami frogs, hand colored holiday themed place mats, and more kept them busy and out of my hair! I hope that each of you has the opportunity to celebrate a most joyous Passover. If you need more suggestions or ideas, or if you have some ideas of your own, please share on the TBI Facebook page. Chag Sameach! B Shalom, Lori B. Sagarin Chai notes FroM the Music director The other day I came across an image of a poster by Paul Kor that he designed for the United Israel Campaign in It features a Star of David and on the image, it states: We are a part of you. You are a part of us. It instantly reminded me that, despite the challenges we are facing today in the United States, we must keep our minds and hearts in the East with the State of Israel. We can never take for granted its right to exist, its people, and our commitment to a Jewish homeland. On Tuesday, May 2, 2017 we will have the opportunity to celebrate the 69th Anniversary of Israel s Independence. Temple Beth Israel will celebrate Yom Ha Atzmaut 5777 as a community with an evening of song and poetry featuring Koleynu, our Adult Choir. The evening will include music by Israeli composers, music that supports the State of Israel and its people, Israeli favorites that we will sing together, and Israeli poetry interspersed throughout. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be open to the community. Bring your friends and family so we can all celebrate the State of Israel together. Joy & Blessings, Marla Aviva Bentley PhYsicaL security in our temple Temple Beth Israel s lay leaders and staff never have far from mind the physical security of our building and the safety of all who are present. Damage to the Dempster Street exterior of TBI s building from an out-ofcontrol car on December 26 has coincided with a major initiative to harden our structure and improve our procedures for countering or contending with accidents, natural disasters, and possible acts of assault, theft, and/or vandalism. Aided by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, for the past several years TBI has applied for a grant from the US Department of Homeland Security to reimburse the cost of desired security-related improvements. Last year our application was successful; subsequently, President Linda Perlin has appointed an ad hoc Physical Security Committee to prepare to undertake four specific DHS-approved projects. To be performed in coordination with the Facilities Committee, the four projects are: selection and installation of steel bollards to protect the glass doorways and atrium facing the parking lot; replacement locks on second floor classroom and stairway doors to permit coordinated lockdown; replacement of the kitchen s glass exterior doors with steel doors; and expanded video capability and capacity. In parallel, the Physical Security Committee is working to update and document room-specific procedures for addressing situations including health emergencies, fire, tornados, hostile intruders, and more. It is the Committee s intent to complete the DHS-approved projects as well as the Dempster Street wall repairs over the course of Of paramount importance is the safety and security of students, members, and guests who are in our building. Our current procedure includes that all our exterior doors remain locked almost all the time and to have an appropriate attendant in the lobby whenever the doors are unlocked. We are confident that you will be patient if you sometimes need to wait a little longer for someone to answer the door. Of course, part of our security protocol is not to publish the details of our security protocols. We do want all to know that we are implementing all of the police recommendations and regularly revisiting and updating our procedures. we had a great time! On Saturday, February 25th, TBI Brotherhood had its 3rd Annual Music Night Out featuring the A Capella group The Cats Pajamas. The event (which included dinner from The Chicago Diner and dessert from First Slice) was a family friendly event that was reasonably priced and enjoyed by all who attended. This Brotherhood event, along with the first day of school picnic, the Chanukah party, and the Purim carnival, helps TBI stay within their budget by providing our congregation with items that are not included in TBI s annual budget. Like the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood also has events during the year that help raise money to contribute to our congregation. They have a bake sale at the beginning of the year, an Artisan Faire in November, and this year, an adult Bingo event on March 25th. TBI s Brotherhood and Sisterhood create events that are fun for everyone. Some events are for the family and some are for adults only, but all the events are a great opportunity to meet other members and come together as a community. My family has met many new families this way, many who have become our friends. If you find yourself wanting to do something fun, please check the TBI calendar and see if there is a Brotherhood, Sisterhood, or other Temple event. We will always welcome you with open arms. Also, if you have any suggestions for future Brotherhood or Sisterhood events, please contact me at davidscottspector@gmail.com. I will forward any suggestions for the Sisterhood to the right people. 4 sisterhood news One of Sisterhood s objectives as stated in our bylaws is to enrich the lives of its members through personal growth and friendship. We strive to accomplish this through our daytime open program meetings. At these meetings approximately thirty women get together and enjoy a light lunch, laugh, schmooze, and the warmth of each other s company. A brief business meeting is held followed by a program which is always informative and often inspiring. What makes our meetings so special is that we often invite members of the Temple community to speak. We became more knowledgeable about Cuba when TBI members Ernie Heimann and Marty Silverman spoke to us about their recent trips. They shared facts and pictures of life in a country that we knew very little about. Lecturer, tour guide, and TBI member, Beth Sair enlightened us with her knowledge of Chicago s talking statues. We were intrigued by the stories that the statues tell through the voices of actors and writers with ties to Chicago. Who knew statues could talk? Each year Lori Sagarin discusses a list of recommended books she has compiled for our reading pleasure. Lori motivates and excites us with her passion for reading. What could be better than getting recommendations for great books? One of the highlights of the year is when Rabbi Weinberg comes to one of our meetings. We do not know the topic of his discussion beforehand, but he never disappoints. Most recently we heard about his latest trip to Israel and the issues the government is currently facing. We are looking forward to our April meeting when we will take a field trip to the Holocaust Museum. TBI member and docent, Karen Nolan, will lead us on a tour of the museum and the special Eichmann exhibit. We want to thank our speakers who graciously enhance our meetings, our volunteers who serve lunch, and the women who attend. We always welcome new faces. 5 brotherhood news: what do i know? I only know one thing; that I know nothing ("ipse se nihil scire id unum sciat," for my wife who is brushing up on her Latin) sometimes called the Socratic Paradox. know anything? I don t even suspect anything. Yogi Berra With a couple of significant Brotherhood programs and initiatives taking place over the next three months, I find myself in between the worlds of two of my favorite philosophers. So here is what I know, and what I know that I don t know. The Spring Gala is taking place on Saturday, April 22nd at 6:00 p.m. Brotherhood is playing a key role in setting-up for the event. I know that we will need volunteers. The Congregation s Annual Meeting is taking place on Sunday, May 21st at 9:30 a.m. Coinciding with the last day of religious school (for which Brotherhood generally prepares breakfast). I know that Brotherhood will play a key role in these events. Installation of Brotherhood officers is scheduled for May 26th at 7:30 p.m. As this marks the end of my term as Brotherhood President, I know that over the next six weeks, we will find good new leadership. Brotherhood s End of Year Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, June 15th. I know that it is my daughter s high school graduation date and that I will be checking with the board about rescheduling for the following week. Do you want to know more?
