Rabbi s Column I write these words as I sit in the holy city of Jerusalem. I have come here, for most of the month of July, to study at the Shalom Hartman Institute with a cohort of rabbis from all the streams of Judaism. During our time together, we have the privilege to sit at the feet of great scholars and to interact with each other. I have also had the opportunity to have some quiet time to sit and reflect. I hope that you, too, will have some time over the course of the summer to pause from the frenetic pace of life and to reflect. Each year on the High Holy Days, I have the privilege to share with you some of my thoughts on the issues that are on my mind. This year, as we prepare to welcome another New Jewish Year, I would also welcome the opportunity to hear some of your thoughts about the issues that are on your mind. I am interested to know what is on your mind, what issues keep you up at night, and what issues motivate you to get up in the morning. During the month of Elul, leading up the High Holy Days, I invite you to share your thoughts with me. I welcome an in-person conversation before or after Shabbat services or at some other convenient time. If we don t have the chance to speak face to face, I would be happy to hear from you via , over the phone, or your preferred form of communication. As I sit here in Jerusalem, I am also thinking about our next TBI congregational Journey to israel in May For information and details go to: arzaworld.com. There you will be able to read the proposed itinerary, the trip details and register for the trip. If you are interested and/or have any questions, please contact me in the Temple office or at Rabbi@TBISkokie.org. HigH Holy Days ReminDeR The High Holy Days tickets and information were mailed on July 27, Please remember: Tickets are not required for Selichot, 2nd Day Rosh Hashanah or afternoon services on Yom Kippur dues must be current to receive tickets. Speak to a financial officer if you have questions. Additional ticket requests must be received by August 27th. Please note: TBI will be using the Mishkan HaNefesh as our prayerbook. It comes as a set of books (one for Rosh Hashanah and one for Yom Kippur) and the TBI price is $36 per set. Because TBI was able to get this discounted price by buying in bulk and then selling individual sets to our members we must restrict your payment options to either check or cash (exact change requested) no credit card payments or billing will be possible. It will be necessary for every worshipper to acquire a copy of Mishkan HaNefesh and loaners will not be available. For additional information, please call the Temple Office. She has been a competitive swimmer for many years and this spring decided to give diving a try. Along with spending time in the pool, she also enjoys gymnastics and cheerleading. This summer was Dani's 5th summer at OSRUI, spending 4 weeks in their Gesher Program. In addition to her own activities, she enjoys spending time with her siblings on family vacations. Dani is currently working on her Bat Mitzvah initiative, as she continues to make orange bracelets for Gun Violence Prevention. The bracelets will be for sale at TBI this fall and all money will be donated to Everytown.org. The Weiss Family invites the community to share in the joy as Dani becomes at Bat Mitzvah. Several months ago, I wrote about welcoming the stranger as it relates to our celebration of Passover. I focused on how Passover is a reminder of our commandment to welcome the stranger in our midst, whether it be at school, work, in the neighborhood or here at Temple Beth Israel. Since that time, it has become an even more significant issue not just locally in our daily lives, but more broadly in our nation. Many in our community have protested bans on refugees, limitations on legal immigration and expedited deportations of peaceful undocumented immigrants. Now we know that our country has been engaged in a zero-tolerance policy at our southern border which included separating children from their migrant parents when they cross the border. As Jews, we understand the plight of being an immigrant fleeing violence and oppression. As Americans, we also understand ourselves to be a nation of immigrants. Our moral values and ideals require us to treat migrant families seeking asylum with compassion. At our Board of Trustees Meeting last November, our Board unanimously agreed to sign to become a Brit Olam Congregation. What did we agree to? Among other things we agreed to, address the root causes of injustice and advocate for systemic change, to foster a culture of sacred and civil dialogue in our community where all opinions are heard, and to participate on one of the Religious Action Center s (the RAC) current Urgency of Now campaigns at the local, state or federal levels regarding, Transgender Rights, Immigrant Justice and Racial Justice/Criminal Justice Reform. This action publicly reaffirmed our commitment to meaningful social justice work. Throughout our history, Reform Congregations have acted as safe havens for those seeking refuge from persecution and deportation. In reviewing the materials provided by the RAC on immigrant justice, this is the portion that I focused on, The history of the Jewish people from Egypt through the Holocaust until today reminds us of the many struggles faced by immigrants throughout the world. As a community of immigrants, we are charged to pursue justice, seek peace and build a society that is welcoming to all of God s creatures, regardless of their immigration status. Our community is committed to these ideals and we are always looking for new ways to actively repair the world. Our social action council discusses and acts on these issues with regularity. If you are interested in getting involved, please come to a meeting, send me a note, take some action. You will be helping us meet our commitment to address the root causes of injustice and advocate for systemic change. The faculty and I are so excited to welcome new students and celebrate the return of those we already know. We are kicking off the year in a brand-new way by having an Elulpalooza* Open House at our annual August Shabbat in the Park at Lovelace Park on Friday evening, August 24th beginning at 5:15 PM. At this time, you will meet the teachers, engage in activities that will get us prepared for the upcoming new year, celebrate Shabbat, and picnic as a community. It is going to be a very special evening and we hope that everyone will mark their calendars. Never been to Shabbat in the Park? It is easy; bring a picnic dinner for your family, bring a dessert to share (rumor has it the s mores table will make an appearance!), and enjoy the spirit of community. Rabbi Weinberg and Marla will lead a spirited, guitar filled (and short) Kabbalat Shabbat starting at 6:30 PM, followed by food and friendship. Your kids need to eat before 6:30? No problem, you may feed them any time after you arrive. Although there is parking, many of us will need to park across the street and walk a bit so take that into account as you pack your dinner. At this month s Shabbat in the Park we will also be collecting school supplies for the Herzl School. Items needed include: Backpacks, pencils, markers, crayons, glue sticks, pens, lined paper, construction paper, and anything else you feel is needed at the start of the school year. Following the August 24th event, we will be looking for volunteers to deliver our collection. If you have been interested in visiting the school, this may be your opportunity. Let me know! UnsUng HeRo By Jon Schneider There are so many unsung heroes at Temple Beth Israel that I worry that we will never manage to honor them all. Therefore, for the first time since we began this program, I would like to honor two Unsung Heroes together. This couple has been dedicated to TBI for many years, quietly doing the behind the scenes tasks and getting little or no credit. Both Marcia Satyr and Ira Satyr are deserving on their own, but as a pair, they are especially appropriate for this award. Ira is the reason TBI s plants remain strong and healthy, as he takes on the task of watering and otherwise tending to the greenery inside our building. He is also a tremendous help to the office staff in assuring that many mailings go out promptly. In addition, he helps prepare Likrat Shabbat and he does general maintenance of the facility, along with Mike Passman. He has also served in many key roles with Brotherhood over the years. Marcia helps with nearly any possible opportunity to help serve food. Whether it is Catering Committee with Linda Lewison, Likrat Shabbat setup, 7:30pm Oneg setup, or working on the Saturday morning Kiddush, Marcia usually has a hand in preparing or cleaning up after an event. She is also a proud Koleynu participant and a leader in Sisterhood. As a team, Marcia and Ira take on primary responsibility for managing all of the holiday luncheons during the day (Sukkot, Simchat Torah, and Shavuot). i am pleased to present the august unsung hero award to Marcia and ira Satyr. This is a great time of year to check in with unaffiliated friends/family about their plans for synagogue affiliation and the High Holidays. We have an amazing team of volunteers who would love to speak with them about the benefits of being a part of our community. In fact, bring those folks with you on Aug 24th, as we would all love to meet them. I look forward to seeing all of you soon. B shalom, Lori B. 4 chai notes FRom the music DiRectoR Summer for teachers is the time where we recharge our batteries, plan for the year to come, and attend professional development conferences. This summer, I had the opportunity to attend two such conferences, the National Convention of the American Conference of Cantors Guild of Temple Musicians and the North American Jewish Choral Festival. The ACC-GTM Convention was held in Dallas, and I take great pride in having served as a Co-Chair. Our convention theme was Deepen Your Heart in Texas and focused on renewal of body, mind, and spirit. Our scholar-in-residence, Rabbi Shefa Gold, taught us about chant as a spiritual practice, meditation, and how music and prayer can re-wire the brain to make us whole. Our second scholar-in-residence, Dr. Jonathan Palant, a specialist in choral conducting, brought the Dallas Street Choir to participate in the Wednesday Shacharit service. The Dallas Street Choir is a choral ensemble comprised of individuals who are experiencing homelessness. Hearing their stories through the music was one of the most inspiring and moving experiences of my life. You can learn more about this incredible organization and hear the choir for yourself at A few days after I returned from Dallas, I was off to Stamford, CT for the 29th North American Jewish Choral Festival. The Festival is run by the Zamir Choral Foundation and features concerts, choral rehearsals, and in-depth learning sessions on all things Jewish music. In addition to professional development and bringing new music to TBI and Koleynu, my primary purpose in attending the festival is the annual meeting of the conductors of HaZamir: The International Jewish Teen Choir. This is my 2nd year as the conductor of HaZamir Chicago, and our annual meeting is chance to discuss plans for the upcoming season. HaZamir is an international Jewish youth movement that upholds the highest standards of musical excellence, strengthens Jewish identity, builds pluralistic community, facilitates leadership skills, and forges strong ties to Israel. Each local chapter rehearses weekly, and then comes together throughout the year to rehearse and perform. Our culminating concert last season at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center in New York was spectacular. We will be returning to Lincoln Center this season as well on Sunday, March 31, HaZamir Chicago will be auditioning new singers this Fall. Contact me for more information or to learn more visit: Joy & Blessings, Marla Aviva Bentley a small note of gratitude A small note of gratitude and amazement of TBI s multi-talented, hard-working, highly knowledgeable and dedicated Music Director, Choir leader, cantorial soloist, educator and mensch g dolah: Marla. TBI is incredibly fortunate and blessed that Marla has chosen to share her many gifts and passion with us. I began attending TBI shortly after Marla and her lovely family arrived at TBI. I wondered how someone as young and as new could demonstrate as much presence, talent, knowledge, and command as she did. During the challenging final months of my mother s life, Marla s warmth, kindness, generous spirit, thoughtfulness and support were invaluable to me (and other Zimmermans). Marla attempted to teach me how to chant Torah. I was a slow learner. Marla claimed while recruiting new members for Koleynu, that she could teach anyone who could read music to sing. I brashly decided to challenge this claim by joining. While I still can t sing particularly well, I am learning. My experience with the choir has been remarkably meaningful. Davening, making music, and learning continue to be inspiring and enriching because of her leadership. Did I mention anything about Marla s amazing voice or her humor? I would simply like to encourage all of TBI to recognize the contributions of a wonderful woman of valor and heart: Thank You, Todah Rabah, Marla Aviva Bentley. Sagarin *Elul is the Jewish month immediately prior to Rosh Hashanah and the new year. It is a time for reflection and getting ready for the holiday season. mazal tov tbi! May her memory be a blessing. mazal tov to the bat mitzvah Daniella (Dani) Hope Weiss, daughter of Gail and Jason Weiss, will be called to the Torah as Bat Mitzvah on August 25, Dani is a 8th grader at Attea Middle School in Glenview.
