1 Yunus Tenth Surah. Revealed in Makkah. 109 Statements The Surah takes its name from Statement 98 where the people of Nineveh, after having at first rejected their Prophet Yunus (Jonah), later responded to his call in unison, and were saved from divine punishment. This is the first of the six Alif- Laam-Ra' group of Surahs belonging to the late Makkan period. The intra-textual context of the experience of Prophet Jonah and Prophet Muhammad, Allah bless them both, was to be the same. The Arabs of Makkah fiercely opposed Islam, fought against it for twenty years and eventually embraced it and devoted their souls and resources in its defence and advocacy. The Surah shares many features with Surah 06 and 17, and highlights the correlation between belief and good deeds the one necessitates the other. Statements 04, 09 and 26 capture the essence: 'so that HE may reward equitably, with justice and fairness, those who believe and perform good deeds; those who believe in the Unity of ALLAH and the Time of Judgment and perform righteous deeds, their RABB shall guide them through their faith; for those men and women, young and old, who persevere in doing good there is the ultimate good reward.' The declaration of truth is strong, transparent and global; consider Statements 37, 38, 39 and 81: This Qur'an could not have been composed by anyone, jinn or human, other than ALLAH. Beyond any doubt it is only from the RABB Lord Supreme of the Worlds. Or do they allege: 'He Muhammad - has forged it?' Challenge them: 'Produce, then, even one Surah of an equal merit, and call upon for help on all you can in the world. But no! They disbelieve what they cannot grasp and comprehend, particularly since its inner meaning and interpretation has not become clear to them. ALLAH does not support the actions of those men and women, young and old who perpetrate corruption and disbelieve. The Surah treats the Muslims as any other religious community by being told that, when it comes to judgment, they shall not be afforded any special concessions. For them, as for all human beings, reward shall be commensurate with deeds and actions. Page 590

2 The expression of Arabic 'Qul' reflecting the meaning of say, tell, proclaim, and/or declare has been repeated twenty two times in the Surah signifying an emphases on matter of faith. The Surah constitute core of Chapter 11. Page 591

The disbelievers, including secularists and atheists of contemporary times, say: 'This person, i.e. Muhammad is plainly a skilled enchanter, a manifest sorcerer!' Surely your RABB Lord Supreme Inna rabbakumu is ALLAH who created the cosmos, Allahu allathee the space and the earth in six-day span khalaqa of time, and alssamawati waalarda fee sittati b. then seated HIMSELF to the Throne of Almightiness, regulating and ayyamin thumma governing the command of all that istawa AAala exists and may cause to exist to alaaarshi infinity yudabbiru al-amra c. No doubt, HE originates all HIS creation, and then repeats it, i.e. brings them all back to life so that HE may reward equitably, with justice and fairness, those who believe and perform good deeds in fairness. d. As for those who disbelieve, there awaits a drink of scalding water and a grievous suffering for their disbelief and blasphemy. Ayah 04 Ilayhi marjiaaukum jameeaaan waaada Allahi haqqan innahu yabdao alkhalqa thumma yuaaeeduhu liyajziya allatheena amanoo waaaamiloo alssalihati bialqisti waallatheena kafaroo lahum sharabun min hameemin waaaathabun aleemun bima kanoo yakfuroon Page 593

5 Statement 05 a. It is HE WHO made the sun a source of radiant light; an illuminating splendor, b. and the moon glittering, a light radiance, and has determined its phases so that you may know how to compute the number of years and how to calculate time. c. ALLAH has not created this otherwise than in accordance with truth, i.e., HE has created nothing accidentally - 38:27; there is always a definite purpose in consonance with HIS wisdom. d. HE explains distinctly HIS revelations to a people of knowledge and understanding. Statement 06 a. Truly in the alternation of the nighttime and the daytime, b. and in all that ALLAH has created in the cosmos, the space and the earth, c. there are messages and wondrous signs in these for a people who are pious and ALLAH-conscious. Ayah 05 Huwa allathee jaaaala alshshamsa diyaan waalqamara nooran waqaddarahu manazila litaaalamoo AAadada alssineena waalhisaba ma khalaqa Allahu thalika illa bialhaqqi yufassilu al-ayati liqawmin yaaalamoon Ayah 06 Inna fee ikhtilafi allayli waalnnahari wama khalaqa Allahu fee alssamawati waalardi laayatin liqawmin yattaqoon Statement 07 Ayah 07 a. Indeed, those men and women, Inna allatheena la young and old, who do not entertain yarjoona liqaana the belief of meeting US on the Day of waradoo Judgment, bialhayati b. and feel well at ease with the life of alddunya this world and are pleasantly content waitmaannoo biha herein, and do not look beyond it, i.e. waallatheena hum regard this life as the only reality, AAan ayatina dismissing the idea of resurrection as ghafiloon mere wishful thinking. c. and who are heedless and do not pay any attention to OUR Messages and ignore them Page 594

6 Statement 08 a. Those are the ones that their abode shall be the Hellfire in return for what they had been earning in the worldly life. Ayah 08 Ola-ika ma/wahumu alnnaru bima kanoo yaksiboon 08 Statement 09 a. Assuredly, those men and women, young and old, who believe in the Unity of ALLAH and the Time of Resurrection and Judgment, b. and act in accord with morality and perform righteous deeds, c. they are guided aright by their RABB Lord Supreme by means of their Faith; or, their RABB shall guide them through their faith. d. In the life to come, running waters will flow at their feet in the Gardens of Bliss. Ayah 09 Inna allatheena amanoo waaaamiloo alssalihati yahdeehim rabbuhum bieemanihim tajree min tahtihimu alanharu fee jannati alnnaaaeem Statement 10 Ayah 10 a. And in that state of happiness, their DaAAwahum prayer shall be: feeha subhanaka b. 'All Glory be to YOU, O ALLAH!' allahumma c. And their greetings in it shall be: watahiyyatuhum 'Peace!' The term 'peace' is reflective feeha salamun of a feeling of inner peace, fulfillment, waakhiru and security from all grief, sorrow and daaawahum ani evil. alhamdu lillahi d. And their prayer shall close with the rabbi words: alaaalameen e. All praise and gratitude is for One ALLAH, the RABB Lord Supreme of the Worlds.' Page 595

7 Statement 11 a. And if ALLAH were to quicken for human beings the ill they have earned by their sinful deeds as they would desire to hasten in seeking the good, their destined term would have already been fulfilled. b. But WE abandon those men and women, young and old who do not hold the belief of meeting US in their overweening defiance, to wallow blindly and stumbling aimlessly. Statement 12 a. And when harm or misfortune befalls a person, s/he calls upon to US for relief and rescue, whether lying on side, and/or sitting, and/or standing, i.e. in every situation: these expressions are often used - for example, 03:191 - to describe the various situations in which human being may find oneself; b. then, when WE cause to relieve harm or misfortune, s/he goes on as though s/he had never called upon US to relieve him/her from the harm or misfortune that befell him/her. c. Thus are their misdeeds and misbehavior made to appear fair and pleasing to those who are given to excesses and defiance. Statement 13 a. And certainly WE caused to perish many a generation before your time when they indulged and persisted in wrongdoing and transgressed. b. while their Messengers came to them and brought them impeccable evidence of the truth, but they would not believe. c. Thus WE reward the sinners and guilty according to their disbelief and misbehavior. Ayah 11 Walaw yuaaajjilu Allahu lilnnasi alshsharra istiaajalahum bialkhayri laqudiya ilayhim ajaluhum fanatharu allatheena la yarjoona liqaana fee tughyanihim yaaamahoon Ayah 12 Wa-itha massa alinsana alddurru daaaana lijanbihi aw qaaaidan aw qa-iman falamma kashafna AAanhu durrahu marra kaan lam yadaauna ila durrin massahu kathalika zuyyina lilmusrifeena ma kanoo yaaamaloon Ayah 13 Walaqad ahlakna alquroona min qablikum lamma thalamoo wajaathum rusuluhum bialbayyinati wama kanoo liyu/minoo kathalika najzee alqawma almujrimeen Page 596

8 Statement 14 a. Whereupon WE made you their successors on earth, after them, b. so that WE might see how you would fare, act and govern while blessed with power and authority. Ayah 14 Thumma jaaaalnakum khala-ifa fee alardi min baaadihim linanthura kayfa taaamaloon 14 Statement 15 Ayah 15 a. And whenever OUR Messages are Wa-itha tutla read out to them in all their clarity, AAalayhim b. those who do not believe in and ayatuna bayyinatin hope meeting with US on the Day of qala allatheena la Judgment say: yarjoona liqaana c. 'Bring us a Qur'an other than this, or i/ti biqur-anin else make some change in it' - to suit ghayri hatha aw our views as to what is right and what baddilhu qul ma is wrong. yakoonu lee an d. Tell them O Prophet Muhammad: obaddilahu min - 'It is not conceivable that I should tilqa-i nafsee in change it of my own accord. attabiaau illa ma - I merely follow what is revealed on yooha ilayya innee me from ALLAH. akhafu in - If I were to disobey or rebel against AAasaytu rabbee my RABB Lord Supreme and AAathaba yawmin yield to your desire, I dread the Aaatheem punishment of a terrible and an awesome Day the Time of Judgment. e. The disbelievers wanted Prophet Muhammad, ALLAH bless him always, and the Qur'an to show tolerance by honoring their deities and endorsing their erroneous beliefs. The expectation continues to date. 15 Page 597

9 Statement 16 a. Say O Prophet Muhammad: b. 'Had ALLAH so willed, I would have neither read it out to you, i.e. the Qur'an nor would HE have caused you to be aware of it, i.e. brought it to your knowledge. c. As a matter of fact, I have already spent a whole lifetime, long forty years, among you and have been renowned for my truthfulness and integrity before it the Qur'an - was revealed to me. d. And now you allege that I fabricate the Divine Revelation. e. Will you not, then, understand and be reasonable?' Statement 17 a. Thus who is more unjust and wicked than the one who ascribes lies to ALLAH or denies HIS revealed Messages? b. Indeed, the wicked shall neither prosper nor succeed in the Sight of ALLAH at the Time of Judgment. Ayah 16 Qul law shaa Allahu ma talawtuhu AAalaykum wala adrakum bihi faqad labithtu feekum AAumuran min qablihi afala taaaqiloon Ayah 17 Faman athlamu mimmani iftara AAala Allahi kathiban aw kaththaba biayatihi innahu la yuflihu almujrimoon Statement 18 Ayah 18 a. Limitless Glory be to ALLAH! yaaalamu fee f. And exalted is HE far above alssamawati wala whatever they may associate with fee al-ardi HIM, or take besides HIM.' subhanahu wataaaala AAamma yushrikoon 18 Page 598

And humankind was once a single Wama kana community, alnnasu illa b. but then they fell into discord and ommatan disagreed among themselves and wahidatan created numerous factions and faikhtalafoo different schools of thought. walawla kalimatun c. And were it not for a decree that sabaqat min preceded from your RABB Lord rabbika laqudiya Supreme, a judgment would have been baynahum feema pronounced immediately regarding all feehi yakhtalifoon that over which they differ and dispute. Statement 20 Ayah 20 a. And they ask: 'Why has no Wayaqooloona miraculous sign been sent down to lawla onzila him, Prophet Muhammad by his AAalayhi ayatun RABB Lord Supreme?' min rabbihi faqul b. So tell them O Prophet Muhammad: innama alghaybu c. 'Truly the realm of the Unseen and lillahi faintathiroo miraculous signs belongs only to innee maaaakum ALLAH. mina d. So wait awhile. almuntathireen e. Truly I am with you of the ones who are waiting awhile.' Statement 21 Ayah 21 a. And whenever WE cause a people, Wa-itha athaqna whether individuals or communities, alnnasa rahmatan to experience OUR mercy after some min baaadi calamity or hardship has afflicted darraa massat-hum them, itha lahum makrun b. they turn to conspire against OUR fee ayatina quli revealed Messages. Yet when HE has rescued them, there they are, behaving outrageously and transgressing the land without purpose. b. O People of the World! c. It is against yourselves, your own souls, that you engender transgression - indicating the inevitability with which every evil deed damages its perpetrator spiritually. d. You care only for the short enjoyment of the present life, e. but remember that ultimately you must return to US after death, f. when WE shall make you truly understand all that you have been doing in the worldly life.
