1 Al-Hijr Fifteenth Surah. Revealed in Makkah. 99 Statements The Surah takes its title from Statement 80 - ancient capital of Thamud situated on the coast of the Red Sea in the Arabian Peninsula. It is last of the six Alif-Laam-Ra' group of Surahs and was revealed after Surah 12 at a critical juncture falling between the 'period of sorrow and grief' when, amongst other events, the Prophet, Allah bless him always, lost his wife Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, and the year when he migrated to Madeenah. The Surah thus reflects the challenges of a difficult period. The Surah handles several sundry themes: - The Qur'ān is meant for the welfare of humanity. Thus, it shall forever be guarded against all corruption and all attempts to annihilate it. - While the eventful narrative of Adam and Satan is recounted in the Qur'ān on several occasions, the Surah illustrates the very nature of the substance from which both were created: the former out of sounding mud/clay; the latter out of the fire of scorching winds. - Satan, the evil, has no real power over human beings. All it can do is to tempt and mislead those who allow themselves to be misled by him. Thus they will have only to blame themselves for their choice of falling into error. - People need to be vigilant against all satanic temptations, realizing that as long as Allah's Laws are not violated and/or abandoned, He will be forgiving and generous, otherwise His wrath can be overwhelming. - Sodomy and homosexuality are a perversion and an abnormality. Lot's people were destroyed and made an example because they suffered from this curse. - Jews and Christians treated the Qur'ān in a manner similar to the way they had treated Torah and Evangel. They accepted what suited them and refused the rest. While promising a complete protection for the Message of the Qur'ān against all evil designs, it intensifies the warning to those who were bent on its destruction - a phenomenon that continues to date. - Mockery and opposition to the Word of Allah, i.e. the Qur'ān would never go unpunished, regardless of time and space. The communities to whom Noah, Hud, Saleh, Lot, Shu'ayb and Moses were assigned, they mocked the Divine Message and consequently were punished most severely and turned into ruins. Page 752

2 - This life is transient to another permanent life after resurrection where everyone will be rewarded in accordance with ones performance in this life. The losers will be those men and women, young and old who deny Allah's sovereignty and neglect His Guidance. Statement 01 forms the tail-end of Chapter 13. 3 Aauzu biallahi mina alshshaytani alrrajeem I seek Allah s protection from the satanic, accursed and evil forces - both within the human soul and social environment Bismillahi alrrahmani alrraheem I/We start with the Name of Allah who is Supremely Merciful and Ever-Compassionate Statement 01 a. Alif-Laam-Ra'. See Annexure One. b. These are the Divine Messages of the Book of Qur'ān and a clear discourse and Recital of things that distinguishes right from wrong. Ayah 01 Alif-lam-ra tilka ayatu alkitabi waqur-anin mubeen 01 Chapter 14 Statement 02 a. The Day will surely come when the disbelievers may repeatedly wish that they were Muslims, i.e. that they had submitted themselves to One ALLAH in their worshipful reverence and obedience when they see the disbelievers going to hell. Ayah 02 Rubama yawaddu allatheena kafaroo law kanoo muslimeen 02 Statement 03 Ayah 03 a. Let them feast and enjoy themselves Tharhum ya/kuloo as if it is the only aim of life, and let wayatamattaaaoo their wishful hopes distract and wayulhihimu alamalu fasawfa preoccupy them, i.e. the making of long-term plans with greed for the yaaalamoon material without any concern for the accountability process after resurrection. b. For they shall soon realize the futility of their endeavors. 03 Page 754

4 Statement 04 a. And never have WE destroyed any township or community for its wrongdoing unless divine revelations were made known to it beforehand. Ayah 04 Wama ahlakna min qaryatin illa walaha kitabun maaaloom 04 Statement 05 a. No community can either forestall its appointed time - doom - or delay it. Ayah 05 Ma tasbiqu min ommatin ajalaha wama yasta/khiroon 05 Statement 06 a. And they say: b. 'O you Muhammad on whom this Reminder - the Qur'ān - has been revealed! c. You are certainly insane and possessed and your claim to prophethood is false. Statement 07 a. Why do you not bring to us the angels to testify your truthfulness, if you are among the truthful?' Ayah 06 Waqaloo ya ayyuha allathee nuzzila AAalayhi alththikru innaka lamajnoon Ayah 07 Law ma ta/teena bialmala-ikati in kunta mina alssadiqeen Statement 08 a. WE never descend angels except in accordance with demands of the truth, i.e. they are sent only to enforce a Divine decision through punishment. b. And were the angels to appear now to testify the truth, the disbelievers shall be given no further respite. Ayah 08 Ma nunazzilu almala-ikata illa bialhaqqi wama kanoo ithan munthareen 08 Statement 09 a. It is WE OURSELVES who have sent down this Rememberance - the Qur'ān - gradually, bit by bit, over a period of time, and b. it is WE WHO shall guard it against any satanic change, and preserve it in its full form to infinity. Ayah 09 Inna nahnu nazzalna alththikra wa-inna lahu lahafithoon 09 Page 755

5 Statement 10 a. And WE did assign the Messengers before you to the groups of earlier people. Ayah 10 Walaqad arsalna min qablika fee shiyaaai alawwaleen 10 Statement 11 a. but whenever a Messenger came to any of them they mocked at him and ridiculed him. b. And so did the Arabs at the Qur'ān and at Prophet Muhammad, ALLAH bless him always. Statement 12 a. This is how WE cause polytheism and disbelief enter into the hearts of the guilty criminals and sinners. Ayah 11 Wama ya/teehim min rasoolin illa kanoo bihi yastahzi-oon Ayah 12 Kathalika naslukuhu fee quloobi almujrimeen Statement 13 a. They do not believe in it - the Qur'ān - and surely the way of life of those of earlier times has already passed who did not believe the Divine Messages of their times and were eventually destroyed. Ayah 13 La yu/minoona bihi waqad khalat sunnatu alawwaleen 13 Statement 14 a. And even if WE were to open a gateway to the heaven for the disbelievers and had they ascended higher and higher, up to it; Ayah 14 Walaw fatahna AAalayhim baban mina alssama-i fathalloo feehi yaaarujoon 14 Statement 15 Ayah 15 a. they would still say: Laqaloo innama b. 'Truly it is our eyes that are sukkirat absaruna spellbound and our sights are dazzled! bal nahnu qawmun c. Or, we must have been a bewitched mashooroon community? 15 Page 756

6 Statement 16 a. And indeed WE have set up great constellations and stellar formations in the sky and space, and b. WE made them appear pleasing to the onlookers; Ayah 16 Walaqad jaaaalna fee alssama-i buroojan wazayyannaha lilnnathireen 16 Statement 17 Ayah 17 a. and WE have made them secure Wahafithnaha min against every accursed and outcast kulli shaytanin satanic force, i.e. HE has made it rajeem impossible for the latter to obtain, through astrology or what is popularly described as occult sciences, any real knowledge of that which is beyond the reach of human perception. Statement 18 a. so that anyone who seeks to eavesdrop the unknowable by stealth is chased by a clearly visible and deadly flame, or light from a fire source, meteors or shooting stars. b. And we used to sit in ambush at places from it so as to eavesdrop. Whoever then tries to hear would find for him a flame in hot pursuit - 72:09. Ayah 18 Illa mani istaraqa alssamaaa faatbaaaahu shihabun mubeen Statement 19 a. And the earth WE have spread out wide, and b. Placed on it firm mountains, and c. WE caused life of every kind to grow and flourish on it in a wellbalanced manner. Ayah 19 Waal-arda madadnaha waalqayna feeha rawasiya waanbatna feeha min kulli shay-in mawzoon 19 Statement 20 Ayah 20 a. And WE have provided various WajaAAalna means of livelihood and sustenance on lakum feeha it for you, maaaayisha b. as well as for all living organisms - waman lastum whether plants or animals - whose lahu biraziqeen sustenance does not depend on you. 20 Page 757

7 Statement 21 a. And there is not a thing but its treasures are with US. b. and WE give of each only in accordance with a defined and known measure. Statement 22 a. And WE send forth winds heavily loaded, b. then WE send down water from the sky clouds for you to drink. c. WE gave you water to drink which quenches thirst -77:27. d. And you are not the ones who store it up. Ayah 21 Wa-in min shay-in illa AAindana khaza-inuhu wama nunazziluhu illa biqadarin maaaloom Ayah 22 Waarsalna alrriyaha lawaqiha faanzalna mina alssama-i maan faasqaynakumooh u wama antum lahu bikhazineen Statement 23 a. And truly it is WE WHO give life and cause death, and b. it is WE WHO shall be the inheritors, i.e. WE shall remain after all creation has perished. Statement 24 a. And certainly WE knew those of you who lived before you, b. and certainly WE know those who are living now and the ones who are yet to come. Statement 25 a. And truly your RABB - Lord Supreme shall gather them all together. b. HE is indeed all-wise, all- Knowing. Ayah 23 Wa-inna lanahnu nuhyee wanumeetu wanahnu alwarithoon Ayah 24 Walaqad AAalimna almustaqdimeena minkum walaqad AAalimna almusta/khireen Ayah 25 Wa-inna rabbaka huwa yahshuruhum innahu hakeemun AAaleem Statement 26 a. And indeed WE created human being out of sounding mud/clay made out of dark decayed mud/clay molded into shape, Ayah 26 Walaqad khalaqna al-insana min salsalin min hamain masnoon 26 Page 758

8 Statement 27 a. whereas WE had created the jinn long before human being out of the fire of burning winds. Statement 28 a. And when your RABB - Lord Supreme said to the angels: b. 'Truly I am the Creator of the human being out of sounding mud/clay made out of dark decayed mud/clay molded into shape. Ayah 27 Waaljanna khalaqnahu min qablu min nari alssamoom Ayah 28 Wa-ith qala rabbuka lilmalaikati innee khaliqun basharan min salsalin min hama-in masnoon Statement 29 a. So when I have formed it perfectly and breathed into it of MY Spirit, i.e. establishing spirit's connectivity to the body, so that the superior status of the human spirit out of the entire creation becomes evident, b. you fall down before him in prostration.' Ayah 29 Fa-itha sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu feehi min roohee faqaaaoo lahu sajideen 29 Statement 30 a. Once the process of creation was complete, b. thereupon, the angels, one and all, prostrated themselves as commanded by ALLAH. Ayah 30 Fasajada almalaikatu kulluhum ajmaaaoon 30 Statement 31 a. except Satan Iblees, who refused to be among those who prostrated themselves. Ayah 31 Illa ibleesa aba an yakoona maaaa alssajideen 31 Statement 32 a. ALLAH questioned: b. O Satan Iblees! c. Why is it that you are not among those who have prostrated themselves?' Ayah 32 Qala ya ibleesu ma laka alla takoona maaaa alssajideen 32 Page 759

9 Statement 33 a. Satan Iblees submitted: b. 'I am not the one to recognize its superiority and prostrate myself to a human being, c. whom YOU have created out of sounding mud/clay, out of decayed mud/clay molded into shape. Statement 34 a. ALLAH's command came: b. So get out of here, c. for truly you are an outcast and accursed henceforth, Statement 35 a. and truly MY curse shall be upon you to the Time of Resurrection.' Statement 36 a. Satan Iblees submitted: b. 'My RABB - Lord Supreme! c. Kindly grant me respite till the Day when all the dead are resurrected.' Statement 37 a. ALLAH said: b. 'Then truly you are among those who are granted respite, Ayah 33 Qala lam akun liasjuda libasharin khalaqtahu min salsalin min hamain masnoon Ayah 34 Qala faokhruj minha fa-innaka rajeem Ayah 35 Wa-inna AAalayka allaaanata ila yawmi alddeen Ayah 36 Qala rabbi faanthirnee ila yawmi yubaaathoon Ayah 37 Qala fa-innaka mina almunthareen Statement 38 a. till the appointed Day - resurrection and judgment - the time of which is known.' Ayah 38 Ila yawmi alwaqti almaaaloom 38 Page 760

10 Statement 39 Ayah 39 a. Satan Iblees said: Qala rabbi bima b. 'My RABB - Lord Supreme! aghwaytanee c. As YOU have enticed me and let me laozayyinanna fall in error, I swear that I shall seek lahum fee al-ardi revenge against Adam and his walaoghwiyannah offspring by making evil appear fair um ajmaaaeen and pleasant to them on earth, d. and I shall most certainly entice them and mislead them all into grievous error, 39 Statement 40 a. except for those of YOUR worshippers, men and women, young and old from among them who are truly devoted to YOU.' Statement 41 a. HE said: 'That is the straight and direct path to ME.' Ayah 40 Illa AAibadaka minhumu almukhlaseen Ayah 41 Qala hatha siratun AAalayya mustaqeem Statement 42 Ayah 42 a. Truly as for MY worshippers you Inna AAibadee shall have no power to prevail over laysa laka them, i.e. who are not affected by AAalayhim Satanic deception and impulses, sultanun illa mani b. except for those men and women, ittabaaaaka mina young and old from the misguided and alghaween lost in grievous error to follow you. c. As Satan Iblees has no real power over human beings; those who allow themselves to be misled by him will only have themselves to blame for falling into error. See 07:l1-18 'I had no power at all over you: I called you - and you responded to me.' 42 Statement 43 a. For all such people, hell is definitely the promised destiny.
