Never excuse yourself. -Henry Ward Beecher This year s IOWA Test of Basic Skills will take place during the weeks of April 20 and April 28, The test will be administered to 1st 8th graders in the mornings between the hours of 9 am 11 am. Below are some tips on how to prepare your child for ITBS tests effectively and how to reduce test anxiety/excitement. You can help your child achieve a higher score by doing the following: Learn about upcoming test. Ask your child s teacher what subjects will be covered. Ask about preparation. The teacher may send home a practice test for example or provide information to review. Practice following directions. When studying at home, have your child read directions carefully. Check to make sure he/she understands them. Use a timer. Set a timer during math homework to help your child get comfortable with timed tests. Turn it into a game-race to see if he can complete a certain number of problems before the timer goes off. Brush up on skills. Do reading, writing, and math activities at home, but go beyond the basics. Look up new words, write about a unique topic, make graphs, etc. Relax. Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and nutritious food in the days leading up to a test. Provide happy distractions from stress, such as family walks. Understand the results. Find out how the scores will be used. How might a particularly low or high score affect a student? Tips on the day before testing: Make sure your child has a full night s rest daily. Ensure that your child has eaten a full breakfast. Arrive to school on time. (Teachers need time for testing prep all morning.) Speaking positively about the testing with your child. We are so proud of all the hard work that the students have put forth into these competitions! Muslim Interscholastic Tournament (MIST) Muslim Interscholastic Tournament took place in Chicago on February 28th to March 1st. Nada Juma competed against 30 other contestants from all over the state and won the 2nd place in 2D art competition. City of Peoria Spelling Bee Friday March 6 Hiba Shaik (6th Grade), our school champion competed with other school champions in Peoria. She won the 6th place out of 17 other school champions. Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Poster, Poetry, and Prose Contest Winners, Sana Naffakh (5th Grade) and Ali Patel (5th Grade) were chosen to represent Daarul Uloom as part of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's Poster, Poetry, and Prose Contest. They are invited to the awards presentation and opening of the Transportations and Air Pollution...What Are the Green Solutions? exhibit in Springfield, Illinois on Saturday, April 18. Congratulations on their achievements! On Saturday, March 28th, 2015 our 6th - 8th graders attended the Regional Science Fair at Western Illinois University Macomb, IL. This experience proved to be rewarding for their academic development and success. Alhamdulillah, we had an incredible showing of projects. We are proud of the effort put forth by all of the participants, MashaAllah, and would like to congratulate the following students for winning the awards. Ameena Patel Project Title: Emerging Superbugs First Award: American Society for Microbiology award, 2nd Place. Second Award: American society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Undergraduate Affiliate Network. Maryam Farooqi Project Title: Flammability of Cloth Award: The United State Navy and Marine Corps Dana Kattom Project Title: Bat-A-Charged Award: The United State Navy and Marine Corps Award. Amilatur Rahman Project Title: Hydraulic Jack Award: Best Science Material Award. Fatima Farooqi and Tasfia Islam Project Title: Is Green Really Green First Award: U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize: Regional Award. Second Award: Central Regional Groundwater committee 1st Place. Third Award: Best in the Environmental Science Category.

3 Issue 10 April 2015/Jumada Al-Akhir/Rajab 1436 AH Page 3 In preparation for the IOWA Standardized Test, we will be celebrating Spirit Week during the week of April 13th. The following activities will help kick off the week and build student motivation. School Spirit Week is also a lot of fun, so be creative! Even though the Uniform Policy requirement will be waived, please be reminded that students must dress Islamically appropriate. Monday Pajamas Day Come to school in PJs! Tuesday Career Day Dress up what students want to be when they grow up or any career. Wednesday Wacky Wacky Day Dress as wacky as possible. This may just in- volve wearing an ugly shirt for some students, but others will go all out, mismatching socks and shoes, mixing pajama bottoms with fancy dresses, putting on a lot of jewelry and styling their hair in unique ways. Thursday Favorite Sports Wear Day Wear any kind of sports clothing of students favorite sport or favorite sports team. Friday Traditional Wear Day Wear traditional clothing from their country! 5th Grade held their class bake sale on March 19. Kudos to the 5th Grade teacher, Ms. Bennett and her wonderful parents for raising $606! It was excellently planned and executed, MashaAllah. Thank you all for making this a smash hit! We will continue with the 4th Grade Class Bake Sale on Thursday, April 16, The bake sale will take place during lunch time (Lunch A and B). Please make sure to send cash in an envelope or ziplock bag labeled with your child's name and grade level. We would like to thank all parents who helped us for our March Hot Lunch. A special thanks goes to Ayesha Salahuddin and her family for organizing the event and to Gul Khaimy for making the tasty chicken kebab sandwich! Look out for April Hot Lunch menu in your child's Folder these coming weeks!

To re-enroll current students, please complete the " Re-Enrollment Form". Please submit this form along with the $100 processing fee per child on or before April 7th. If this form is NOT returned by this deadline, then your child's spot will be given to any new student on the waitlist. Also, if you bring back this form after the deadline, it will be treated as a new student registration with the $150 processing fee per child, not as reenrollment. To enroll the sibling(s) of current students, please submit the " Enrollment Application Form" which you will find on the DU website: dupeoria.org, along with the $150 processing fee. The enrollment will be processed on first-come, first-served basis. For more information on the enrollment process, please see the s that we have already sent. Spring Picture Day will be on Wednesday, April 8th, Unlike the regular Fall school pictures, Spring portraits are fun and casual. Students can bring their awards and trophies, sports, stuffed animals...whatever is special to them! No money is needed on picture day. A proof will be sent home at a later date in which parents will have the opportunity to preview and purchase using the order form provided. Please note that full length or 2/3 body poses will be taken. Also, if you are interested in purchasing a picture of your child taken with his/her siblings, please send an to (du@dupeoria.org) indicating your preference. 6 Issue 10 April 2015/Jumada Al-Akhir/Rajab 1436 AH Page 6 Highlights The DU Quran Academy Graduation Ceremony and Dinner for the Abu Bakr class was held Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 6:00 pm. Masha Allah, the event was open to the community and many came to support our graduates on this joyous occasion. Alhamdolillah, Quran Academy students and staff had a wonderful dinner and ice cream party this month. JazaakumAllahu Khairun to the Events Director/ Coordinators and to the families that helped make these events a success. Masha Allah, our Quran Academy Patrol Monitors Ameena Patel and Shazaib Yousaf, did an excellent job monitoring fellow students last month. Class Curriculum Updates Abu Bakr Class: Students are reviewing the Quran from the beginning as well as discussing the Tafsir of Surat Al-Fatihah. They are also working on Arabic Grammar to help them understand the Quran. 7 Issue 10 April 2015/Jumada Al-Akhir/Rajab 1436 AH Monitoring out of school time is a vitally important part of parenting. It s during the hours either before or after school when problems can result from children not having enough structured activities. Here are some suggestions for keeping your child busy and out of trouble: Plan some meaningful activities for your child for out of school time. Page 7 If your child has computer access, monitor the amount of time spent on the Internet as well as the types of sites your child visits. Access any available community resources if your child starts to engage in antisocial behavior. Take advantage of community resources for connecting your child to learning activities after school or during the summer. Limit TV time to no more than two hours a day. Choose television programs that make your child think or choose those that teach lessons and other inappropriate subjects matter. Be aware that any older siblings or other relatives who baby-sit for your child know what is appropriate behavior and what is acceptable as far as TV viewing.
