Successfully Educating All Students Children love to have their parents visit them at school. It makes them feel important and increases their self-confidence. Also, it lets them know that you, as a parent, value education and are interested in what they are learning at school. This is a chance for you to become better able to help in your child s learning. On Friday, February 6th, immediately after dismissal, parents will be invited to enjoy a stroll down the hallways and in the classrooms with your students. This experience will be a good opportunity for students to share with their parents samples of their work and creativity from the recent weeks. Honest I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man. Daarul Uloom is now on Facebook! It was excellently planned and executed, MashaAllah. Thank you all for making this a smash hit! Exciting news! Daarul Uloom will be offering a hot lunch option the last Friday of every month. Each month, an order form and menu will be sent home for parents to review and purchase. There will be a new menu of your children's favorite foods to choose from each month. Look out for more details in your child's Friday Folder! We will continue with the 3rd Grade Class Bake Sale on Thursday, February 12, The bake sale will take place during lunch time (Lunch A and B). Please make sure to send cash in an envelope or ziplock bag labeled with your child's name and grade level. Our DU team has been enjoying a streak of success, going undefeated for the last six games, Mashaallah! They will have 2 matches to go with a record. This Essay Competition is UIF s annual commitment to partner with Islamic schools and recognize excellence in education. Their goal is to foster healthy competition among Islamic schools and encourage students to be creative thinkers. Best part is if your child wins, our school wins as well! Daarul Uloom is pleased to announce the screening of Finding Nemo on Saturday, February 28th, 5:30PM. Tickets are available in advance for $5/family (sold at the DU office) or $7 at the door on the movie night. Popcorn, pizza, and other goodies will be sold. This is a fun event for the whole family. It is a national essay competition for all full time and weekend Islamic Schools in the USA Prizes awarded in three categories grades 1-5, 6-8 and 9-12 Total of $7,500 in cash prizes will be awarded to essay competition winners and schools Winners will be determined by UIF s essay competition committee Schools can submit as many entries as possible Entries will be accepted from Jan. 1st, 2015 to March 15th, 2015 PTO will hold a BoxTop$ Cookie Sale on Tuesday, February 10th, 2015, from 3:15 to 4:00PM. We will be repeating the Bergner s Community Day Event in hopes of generating more funds for Daarul Uloom. Bergner s Community Days coupon books are available in the office for $5.00 each. Each booklet contains one $10.00 off coupon as well as many merchandise coupons that offer savings of 30%, 20% and more. Our school gets to keep the $5.00 cost of the books. So He punished them by putting hypocrisy into their hearts till the Day whereon they shall meet Him, because they broke that (covenant with Allah) which they had promised to Him and because they used to tell lies [al-tawbah 9:77] The basic rule with regard to lying is that it is not permitted, but there are certain circumstances in which Islam permits lying to serve a greater purpose or to prevent harm. One of these situations is when a person mediates between two disputing parties in order to reconcile between them, if reconciliation cannot be achieved in any other way. Um Kalthoom (may Allaah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: He is not a liar who reconciles between people and conveys something good or says something good. Teaching the value of honesty to children is part of the development of moral and emotional strength. The quality of honesty helps to develop character and solid selfesteem. Here is what parents need to know about teaching honesty. Tips for Parents Lessons about honesty are learned differentially, depending on the child s age. If you start the teaching of honesty early on, you can continue to support this virtue, as your children get older. Explain to your child what honesty means at his/her developmental level. Use words that they can understand at their ages. Teaching Honesty by Example Teaching honesty by example is very effective. Do-as-I-do is a better motto than the proverbial, Do-as-Isay, not-as-i-do. Be honest with children at a level that they can understand. When deciding what to tell a child about a given situation, take into account the child s age and maturity, and to what extent it is in the child s best interest to know whatever it is you are considering telling him. Talking about personal adult issues with a child does not necessarily teach honesty, but may raise anxiety levels instead. Teaching by example means that you conduct your own personal and business affairs in an honest and ethical manner. By doing so you will be demonstrating the self-respect that accompanies ethical behavior. A "No-Shaming" Policy Use a no-shaming policy when children mess up. Children will be more likely to revert to dishonest behaviors if they fear being shamed. Approval is a strong motivator. Non shaming disapproval can help to teach, but shame dissolves strength of character, and tends to elicit the behaviors you want to extinguish. Respond rather than overreact when children lie or dissemble. It is natural for children to test. Your response will teach them to be honest, or to hide. Do not demand (or expect) perfection. Keep consequences for transgressions equal to the crime, and always as consistent as possible. Short consequences work best. If dishonesty has become chronic at any age, consider the underlying root causes. The child may be acting out something that is troubling him. Seek help from a professional if appropriate.
