Illinois Muslim Action! Day 2013 The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago is organizing a statewide MUSLIM AC- TION! Day for Illinois Muslim students. On April 18th, Muslims from all over Illinois will head to the state capitol to meet with legislators and advocate for a variety of important issues for the common good of the community. Our lives are connected to the global environment like never before. From the water we drink to the air we breathe, we are all impacted by nature every day. As the global environment continues to change, it is more important than ever for students to understand the world around them and practice the leadership skills that Once again this year, our 6th and 8th graders will participate in this great annual civic event. Let the voice of the Muslim community be heard! Global Environment Leaders will help them shape our shared future. On April 19th, our 6th and 8th graders will be participating in the 2 nd annual Global Leadership Summit at Peoria Academy. The theme this year is Global Environmental Leaders Students will spend part of the day engaging in small group discussions, playing leadership simulation games, and take part in an exercise that is designed to Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. Harold R. McAlindon enable each summit participant to identify his/her own leadership strengths and to empower them to perform significant changes in their communities. In addition, dynamic keynote speakers will present on topics that range from global environmental issues to solutions and how to contribute and get involved. 2 Quran Competition Daarul Uloom is pleased to announce that the Quran Competition will take place on Friday, April 12 th, The preliminary testing will take place on April 8 th, 9 th and 10 th, at which time one finalist will be chosen per day. InshaAllah, we will have qualified judges to judge the participants for quality of memorization, the proper pronunciations of letters/words, and the tarteel (rhythm), presentation/ ability to control voice. Mrs. Al-Qudah and Mrs. Standardized Testing Week-April ITBS (IOWA) Testing for 1st Grade and up begins on Monday, April 22nd. Below are some tips on how to prepare your child for ITBS tests effectively and how to reduce test anxiety/excitement. You can help your child achieve a higher score by doing the following: Learn about upcoming test. Ask your child s teacher what subjects will be covered. Ask about preparation. The teacher may send home a practice test for example or provide information to review. Page 2 Mansour have been practicing the surahs with their students. Since Spring Break starts on March 29 th, it is wise for all students to focus on the Book of Allah. We encourage students to take advantage of this time. May Allah accept all of our efforts in reading and reciting the Book of Allah. Practice following directions. When studying at home, have your child read directions carefully. Check to make sure he/she understands them. Use a timer. Set a timer during math homework to help your child get comfortable with timed tests. Turn it into a game-race to see if he can complete a certain number of problems before the timer goes off. Brush up on skills. Do reading, writing, and math activities at home, but go beyond the basics. APPROPRIATE SNACKS INCLUDE STRING CHEESE, CRACKERS, FRUIT, YOGURT, ETC.)

3 DU Quran Academy Updates Assalamu Alaikum, Here is the update for DU Quran Academy for the month of March, 2013: Khatmul Quran: Hafsah class finished Surat An-Nabaa on Wednesday the 27th. Alhamdu LiL- LAH. In Sha'a Allah we will start reviewing tanween from alnooraniyyah book and we started studying the rules of Tajweed (Al madd). This is a request to parents to help their children sell as much as possible because every penny earned will be put into materials and activities for the school. Our school will receive all benefits, InshaAllah. World's Finest Chocolate has been in fundraising for over 60 years. We Page 3 for that. This week, we will start with Tanween In Sha'a Allah. Quran Memorization: Ali Bin Abi Taalib (Class of 2012): Ma Sha'a Allah, students finished Surat Al-Hashr and only 1/4 of Juz' 28 is left (Surat Al- Mujaadilah). Target for the month of April is to finish 1/3 of Juz' 27 (Surat At-Toor and Surat An-Najm) In Sha'a Allah. know the quality of the products and know that people are receiving a good value with this product. We ask the adults to sell to friends, neighbors, relatives, and co-workers. Please exert every effort to reach our goal. DU s goal is to sell 150 cases of candy by April 15 th, InshaAllah. Each student makes a difference to our success. We will be offering the World's Finest program which consists of a variety of flavors. Each case contains 60 - $1 Bars. Uthman Bin Affan (Class of 2011): Ma Sha'a Allah, the students finished memorizing Surat Al-Ahzab (Juz' 21) and now in Surat Al-Ankaboot. Should finish In Sha'a Allah Juz' 20 by the end of the month of April. As a reward for the students' hard work, a family trip to "Safari Land" (an indoor amusement park in Villa Park) is scheduled for April 13 In Sha'a Allah. The cost of each candy bar will be $1.00. Please make sure any checks sent to the school are made out to the school. The cases will be available for pick on March 28 th and April 8 th after dismissal from the school lobby. Please use the envelopes provided in each case of chocolate to turn in your money. Print your Student s Name, Homeroom s Name, and the Amount of Money enclosed on the outside of each envelope before you turn it in. Thank you for your courtesy and efforts toward helping us reach our goal. All collected money should be returned to the school no later than April 15 th, 2013.

The main purpose of this event was to develop experimental and research skills for our students. This activity allowed students to demonstrate creativity in Science by organizing their own time and resources. Alhamdulillah, we had an incredible showing of projects. This experience proved to be rewarding for their academic development and success. Congratulations to the following winners, MashaAllah: Mariam Daoud was among one of the winners at the Regional Science Fair in the division of Physics for her project on Drag Force. In addition, she has been nominated to compete in the Broadcom MAS- TERS for an outstanding performance at the SSP-Affiliated Fair which was held on the same day. Ayesha Ellahi won the United States of Army Award for her Cancer Genome Anatomy project and received a Science and Engineering Fairs medal, and a certificate of achievement for an outstanding science project. Tasfiah Islam earned three special awards for her Environmental Science project on Is Green Really Green? She was awarded two diplomas from the Association of Women Geoscientist and the United States Army. In addition to these awards, she received a certificate and a monetary prize from the Central Regional Groundwater Committee for her excellence in completing a project on groundwater. Celebrate Spirit Week In preparation for the IOWA Standardized Test, we will be celebrating Spirit Week in April. The following activities will help kick off the week and build student motivation. As part of their "Zakah project" in Islamic Studies and with guidance from their teacher, Mrs. Suleman, the 1st Graders have collected $ towards building of the new mosque. Students enthusiasm and parents support has made this a wonderful learning experience and Insha'Allah instilled the love in the children to follow the command of Page 5 Allah (swt) and support great causes in Islam. SMILE! Picture Day Spring Picture Day will be on Wednesday, April 10th, Professional photographers from Interstate-Studio will be taking pictures of our students. Flyers will be sent home after the Spring Break. Parents will be able to choose from a variety of backgrounds and packages. For this day only, uniforms are not required; however we do require students to dress Islamically appropriate.

6 Verse of the Month Trustworthiness Friendliness Qur an: Allah says, A 'Ifrit (strong one) from the jinn said: "I will bring it to you before you rise from your place (council). And verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work." (Surah An-Naml: 39) Hadith of the Month Trustworthiness "The five prayers, from one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday prayer and safeguarding the trusts are an expiation (of the sins committed in between them)." (Ibn Majah) Morning Assembly Dua الل ه م ال س ه ل إال م ا ج ع ل ت ه س ه ال و أن ت ت ج ع ل ال حز ن إذ ا ش ئ ت س ه ال Qur an: Allah says, The believers, men and women, are friends and protectors of one another; they enjoin (the people to) Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid (the people) from Al- Munkar (i.e. polytheism and all that Islam has forbidden); they perform as- Salat, and give the Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His Mercy on them. Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. (At- Taubah:71) Friendliness The Prophet (sallahu alaihi wa salam) said: "The believer gets along with people and they feel comfortable with him. There is no goodness in the one who does not get along with people and with whom they do not feel comfortable.
