Grant Muhammad the intercession and favor, and raise him to the honored station You have promised him, [verily You do not neglect promises]. We are pleased to inform you that the first few weeks of school were very successful, enjoyable, and full of excitement! We would also like to thank all parents who made an effort to attend Parent Teacher Orientation Nights on August 20th and 21st. We were pleased to meet all our returning and new DU parents. We received very encouraging feedback from our parents. It is all due to Allah s blessings and the hard work of our staff and faculty. We are trying our best to have open communication with our students, parents, and community at large. It is crucial that you give us your feedback as it helps us in reflecting on our academic programs and other relevant issues. It is our hope to work together to make this school year beneficial and successful for our students. On behalf of the school board, teachers and administration of Daarul Uloom, we would like to wish you and your loved ones Eid Mubarak! We pray to Allah (swt) that the joy of Eid lasts in your hearts all the way until the next Eid. On this day of celebration and commemoration of the sacrifices of Prophet Ibrahim, Hajar and Prophet Ismail (may Allah be pleased with them all), may Allah ease the hearts of all who are suffering, replace pain with comfort and joy, sickness with health, and fill our hearts with the hope and tawakkul (trust in Allah). Students will randomly select a name of another classmate and will purchase a gift for that classmate. A gift must be purchased for that student for a value of $ Students really look forward to this gift exchange and it is important to make it fun. The gift should be wrapped and labeled. Further information will be provided by your homeroom teacher. We would like to thank Sarah Cassim s family for bringing lunch to all DU staff on Friday, August 21st. It was delicious! Jazakakum Allah Khayran! When a child is sick, bringing him/her to the school will put other children and staff at risk of getting sick as well. Keeping them at home will ensure they get plenty of rest and in the long run, less illness for parents. Be sure to always check and review the DU Parent Student Handbook for the list of illnesses that requires children to stay at home. Sick children must stay home 24 hours after fever subsides. They are not to be given fever-reducing medication and sent to school. Some of DU students have been diagnosed with strep throat. Please make sure to tell your children the importance of cleanliness and good hand washing to prevent from getting infected. Pre-K1, Pre-K2 and KG will be going to Tanners Orchard on Wednesday, September 9th, nd and 3rd grade will be going the Wildlife Prairie Park on Monday, September 21st, 2015

Parents may send them to school early if they wish. For this day only, uniforms are not required. We do require students to dress Islamically appropriate. We will inform parents once they are fixed and a distribution date is set. We apologize for any inconvenience. Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said that the first thing a person will be asked about on the Day of Judgment is his salah. If it was valid all his deeds will be valid and if it was invalid, all of his deeds will be invalid too. We would like to continue with the Salah Program again this year to encourage our students to pray their five daily prayers. Attached to this newsletter is a Salah Chart that will help our children keeping track of their Salah. Daarul Uloom will be once again hosting the Class Bake Sale and it will start with Pre-K1 on Thursday, September 10, Class Bake Sale will be organized by the homeroom teacher. The best part of this event is a portion of the proceeds will go towards the hosting class! The bake sale will take place during the lunch time during Lunch A and B. Please make sure to send cash in an envelope or ziplock bag labeled with your child's name and grade level on that day. Periodically throughout the school year, parents will be invited to visit Daarul Uloom to chat with the Principal about various topics over coffee or tea and light refreshments. These informal events provide parents with opportunities to get to know the principal, learn about happenings in the school, ask questions, discuss parents concerns, provide feedback, and network with fellow DU parents. Each parent/principal chat is scheduled to last for an hour. Parents who want to attend a session but cannot stay for its duration are welcome to leave early as needed. 4 Page 4 Issue 2 September 2015 DU HEADLINES Letter From PTO President Asalamu Alaykum DU families, On behalf of the DU Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), I would like to take this opportunity to welcome each of you and your families to Daarul Uloom Islamic School. To our new families, hello and welcome to our wonderful school. I look forward to meeting you and getting to know those who I haven t met. Our students are fortunate to be enrolled in a school with outstanding administration and exceptional teachers. We strive to fulfill the schools mission of promoting health, wellbeing and educational success on a foundation of Islamic values. It is through your support of the PTO that we join in that mission. My name is Hanan Juma and I will be the new PTO President for the school year. I ve been in the PTO for 3 consecutive years as Pizza Lunch coordinator and this is my first year as the President! I m writing this letter to introduce myself and to encourage you to consider being part of a volunteer community that supports your children s education in numerous ways! I look forward to serving in this capacity and hope to be able to continue the enjoyable, fun, and educational PTO sponsored events of the past. In order to be successful we need your help as volunteers. So please look over the events and sign up to help. Over 500 independent studies on parent involvement show that students whose parents are involved in their education have better grades and fewer discipline problems. It is also a great way to meet families and help us support our great school. Together we can make this one of the best school years for DU and for our children. Getting to know your PTO better... The PTO functions to provide funds, programs, and resources to enrich your child s experience as a DU student. This year, Alhamdulillah, we have a great group of parents that meet to plan and coordinate the activities for the year. This includes Pizza Lunches, Hot Lunches, Box Tops, Eid Carnival, Family Reading Night, students honors party, Olympic Day, Spring Program, Graduation Program, and much more. A large part of the PTO time is spent on fundraising so that we are able to provide services not covered by the school budget. Items sold by the PTO are aimed at creating a budget for such events and to expand teachers resources in the classroom. It is important that we have volunteers to continue carrying out these objectives. Once again, Daarul Uloom PTO would like to extend a warm welcome and prayers for a successful school year and we looking forward to getting to know all of you. If you have any questions or want to get involved please contact us at pto@dupeoria.org. 7 Monthly Parent Learning Tips #1: Tips Teaching Your Child Self-Control Page 7 Want to help your child calm down and get a grip? These seven steps will help you teach them how. The goal of parenting is to prepare our children to be successful, independent, capable and moral adults. Part of the responsibility of parenting is teaching our children how to control their responses to the world they live in. Through discipline children learn to master self-control, a vital life skill for success. Self-control is the ability to regulate emotions, desires and the verbal, nonverbal or physical expression of those desires, especially when challenged by other people and situations. Children will come to rely on self-control as they move through the stages of infancy and childhood into adolescence and adulthood, calling again and again on their ability to tolerate frustration and to manage themselves in a variety of situations. 1. Begin early. Self-control begins when children are infants, when parents empathetically respond to their child when he is tired, hungry, cold, needing connection or has soiled his diaper. When an infant s needs are met, he begins to learn basic trust. A child must be able trust his environment and in others, because it is the foundation for self-control. 2. Model what you want to see. Children learn emotional regulation through parental regulation. When modeling, parents should respond to others and in situations the way they wish their children to respond. Model calm, even though you may feel otherwise. You are always the teacher. You are also the student. Take a look at yourself first when you witness your child behaving in a way you do not approve of. If you are not practicing selfcontrol, how can you ask your child to? 3. Use the K.I.S.S. method. Keep It Short and Simple. For example, with a younger child, directions can be something like, If you hit, you sit. The parent follows through and, when the child is ready, he can re-engage with others, with a reminder of no hitting as well as repeating the warning. Self-control generally improves as children develop and the prefrontal cortex area of the brain, which regulates behavior, matures. Older children have had years of experience knowing the rules, routines and what behavior is expected in numerous situations. 4. Use do-overs and generous praise. Parents can go over instructions (doovers) to reinforce the behavior they wish to see. Do-overs provide children with opportunities to practice the behavior over, often in a fun way. They teach, encourage and strengthen the selfcontrol muscle in children. The best time to achieve a do-over is when the child and the parent are calm and the lack of control has recently occurred. For example, You sounded mean when you spoke to me. I understand you may be tired, but that is not the way we speak to each other. Try again, please. And then have your child speak, until he has achieved the proper tone. If he has trouble, model it for him. Praise him for doing it the way you asked him to. I like how you spoke to me. Well done! Praise him for controlling himself. Repetition and verbal praise, along with a hug and smile, reinforce the self-control you are trying to instill in your child as well as selfesteem. 5. Foster awareness and problem solving. Discuss the reasons why your child becomes out of control. Does he have a specific flashpoint or trigger? Is he tired? Hungry? Overtaxed with too many tasks or commitments? My daughter is triggered by hunger. She becomes snarky and then downright mean and combative as her blood sugar drops; in her case, we make sure she eats small portions of protein throughout the day. A teen now, she oversees this herself with great success. With the help of your child, come up one or two go-to ideas that work for him (and you) when he loses control. For my son, we long ago discovered two options that work well with him. He voluntarily goes to his room to cool off until he feels in control, or he takes a long shower to wash away the emotional dirt. His choice of words. The child that reemerges is my sweet, thoughtful loving boy. 6. Focus on the positive. Positive reinforcement begets positive behavior. Bring up the positive whenever possible, like, You are so thoughtful and kind. You helped your sister feel better when you sat with her and read to her. Kids love to be noticed for the good behavior they have. 7. Reward kids for self-control. The most sought-after reward with my kids is one-on-one time with their dad or me. We try to be efficient, working in tandem to get things done to allow for more together time, and I ll acknowledge this to my child: I was able to complete my errand quickly because you were so patient; now I have more time to spend with you. What would you like to do? No child is perfect or comes with instructions. Focus on the love you have for your child, your relationship and his strengths and interests. Your child s self -control will eventually improve if you are consistent with discipline, expectations and verbal praise.
