1 16. Nirankaar and our Environment - Bahadar Singh A Sikh by the very definition of the word is a pupil, a student, a learner of the one God, Nirankaar. To complete the definition a Sikh remains a learner right to the very end. Since the subject of a Sikh s learning of God is boundless, limitless, eternal, for ever and for ever and beyond, a Sikh s study is never completed. So a Sikh stays a Sikh for ever. The deeds of Sikhs may be summarised in the founder Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji`s words: sikhie sikhiya gur vichar A Sikh is supposed to learn the teachings (the sayings, the utterances, the Scriptures) of his Guru and contemplate them, try to understand them and then to act on them by including them in his daily life and spending each moment of his life by following those teachings. So it is understood that a Sikh is a student in the institution of Divine Teaching and stays a student throughout his/her life. We know how the environmental conditions influence the learning process of a student. A crowded, noisy, smelly, filthy, smoky classroom will turn out students with no grades, no passes, etc., whereas a bright, calm, peaceful, fragrant, colourful, warm, cosy type of learning atmosphere will produce successful, brilliant students achieving high grades and fulfilling their learning ambitions. But of course they need the perfect teacher to teach them. In the religious world Sikhs are the only nation who are asked to wear a uniform all the time throughout their life, the uniform being their 5 Ks, their symbols of faith, e.g. their uncut hair Kesh which with their well groomed beard and brilliantly and smartly turbaned head makes them identifiable even in a crowd of a million. This conspicuousness makes them proud of their appearance and their total and unambiguous commitment to their faith and courageous to stand up for their beliefs and be counted, The other parts of their uniform being a comb Kangha, symbol of cleanliness and care; a steel wristlet Kara, a symbol of discipline and commitment and a symbol of belief in One God never ending, never re-starting; a sword (short or long worn across the body) Kirpan, a symbol of courage, defence of honour, protection of meek, weak and suppressed and oppressed ones; a pair of special undershorts Kachha, a symbol of moral control. So a Sikh, a student wishing to learn about the immenseness and vastness of God and His countless boons and gifts to the universe goes about the school of the universe and its surrounding nature, in the proper uniform. This Sikh sits in the presence of his Eternal teacher, his Guru, The Guru Granth Sahib Ji, every day. His lessons are daily, not just on a Sunday or just on a Friday or on any special holy day.

2 The Sikhs are the only people in the world of faiths who were given the lessons in God s words by a succession of ten Gurus spanning a period of 239 years ( A.D.) and covering life spans of 6-8 generations. During this period the Gurus not only spread the word of God but also showed by their personal living examples and the examples of their associates, how practical and feasible it is to live one s life according to the word of God. Then in l708, Sikhs were blessed with an Eternal Guru, Guru Granth Sahib, a collection of all the teachings of God written and compiled during the lifetime of Gurus and formalised by them personally, mostly in a language spoken and understood by the Sikhs (and non-sikhs of that land) and proclaimed that from now on you will treat the holy Guru Granth Sahib Ji as your Living Guru and worship Him, cherish Him and seek guidance from Him as you have practised in the past 239 years with us. Guru Granth Ji Maanieiy Par Gat Guran Ki Deh (Guru Granth Sahib is to be treated as a living form of Guru). So the scene is set with approximately 16 million students (Sikhs) gathered round the Eternal Guru (teacher), Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in the Divine Institution (universe). So from now on to get all the answers on the relationship of human kind and environment or for that matter any question relating to any person of any faith or any other creature, we will very humbly approach our Guru and beg for answers. As always our father of the whole universe and all living in it, ever loving, ever forgiving, ever guiding will give us directives which are equally applicable to all the creation irrespective of their geographical existence, physical appearance and other beliefs. The Environment We know that in gaining worldly knowledge a student has got to go to schools, colleges, universities, and take examinations and pass them and so on. We also know that a good student, a keen pupil, needs an environment which is conducive to his education, helps him to get to like his studies, directs him/her to concentrate more, perceive more and retain her/his knowledge and then expand it to reach the top of the academic ladder. In a similar way, a Sikh (student, pupil in the Divine Institution, a seeker of God) needs and creates a special type of environment to reach Him, to experience His glorious presence, to have the spiritual dialogue with Him. to be able to listen to His Divine words and eventually attain an eternal attendance in His presence and serve Him. In general, all the days and nights of a traveller on the Divine Path are for going on treading towards his destination and the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji says: sa rut suhavi jit tudh samali so come suhela jo teri ghali

3 so rida sumela jit riday tu vutha tu sabhna ke datara jio (page 97 Sri Guru Granth Sahib). It means Only that season is pleasant in which I remember you Only that task is worthwhile, which is in your service. That heart is worthy of beating (and being alive) which has a special place for you You, my Lord, are the generous provider for all To expand a little more on this, it means that a Rose Garden in which you are not with me is no better than a deserted graveyard; the spring season devoid of your memories and blessings is worse than an autumn or a night of calamity; a heart without your loving place is no more than a piece of dead meat, and so on. So the whole search and focus is love for God, aspiration to reach Him, longing to please Him, and hopes of being accepted by Him and the rest of the environment becomes secondary. But to help us on this passage, the everloving Guru gives us a lot of guidance. What is the best time to be united to Him, what is the appropriate dress to be loved by Him, which colours please Him, what sort of surroundings are required, what types of relationships help in this union, and a lot more. Let us beg from Sri Guru Granth Sahib answers to some of the above environmental questions. Time Guru Nanak Dev Ji in his glorious Bani Jap Ji says: amrit vela such nao vadiyaie veechar The period of dawn ( am or 3¾ hours before sunrise) is the time for contemplating the true name of the True God to perceive and remember his Greatness. The third Guru, Guru Amar Das Ji says: baba amrit veley bolia ta dur suni pukar meghat noon furman hoa varsau kirpa dhar

4 (page 1285 Sri Guru Granth Sahib) meaning at dawn God orders all the elements of Nature (light, sound, air, water, fragrances, solitude, peace, tranquility) to bless all seekers now with what they are seeking. Help them in their union with me. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru says beautiful words about this time chiri chuhaki, Paoh futti,vagun bahut trung achruj roop santun rachey; nanak namai rung (page 319 Sri Guru Granth Sahib ) When the birds chirp at dawn, the sun s rays are struggling to pierce through the blanket of darkness creating numerous wonderful colours in water, streams, rivers, oceans. The petals of flowers bathed in dew drops are getting ready to spread their fragrance around and smile at all the onlookers, this is the time to contemplate on the wonders of God s Creation and submit in gratitude and enjoy His blessings. Colours Guru Nanak Devi Ji in one of his hymns, mentions the use of the colours and their effect on the Sikh mind. Guru Ji says: rutta painun mun rutta supedi sut daan (page 16 Sri Guru Granth Sahib) which means Mind being imbued with the Lord s Love is the red in me. Verity and charity and purity of mind, innocence and wishing well for everybody is the real white colour neeli siahi kuda kurni pehrun pehar dhian To fight sin and evil, to protest against injustice and wrong is the blue attire and to meditate on the lotus feet of my Lord is my Robe of Honour. Thus the outer, visible colourful garments are given this deep spiritual meaning. It is said that to become a Saint or holy person is easy (it takes the ritualistic attire to go about as a Saint) but to BE a Saint is totally different.

5 Dress Guru Nanak Dev Ji recites in the holy Guru Granth Sahib kamur bund santokh ka dhun jobun tera naam (page 16) Contentment is my waistband and your true name is my wealth and youth and the power in me. In another hymn Guru Nanak Dev Ji describes our involvement in so many worldly relishes and tastes, and states that it leaves no space or room for the Real Love of the Real True God. The hymn says russ soina russ rupa kamun rus parmul ki vas The pleasure of gold; the pleasure of silver and damsels; pleasures of fragrance and sandal; pleasure of horses; pleasure of cushions and palaces; pleasure of sweets and other cuisines; so many are the relishes of the human body, how then can God find any abode secured in thy heart. russ ghoray, russ seja mandir, russ meetha russ mass etay russ sarir kay, kai ghut naam nivas (page 15 Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji) The artificiality and futility of the outer garb and longings for worldly attachments and materialistic desires are questioned and the need for the Love for God and His Creation is brought into focus Relationships and Company The fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, says in the Holy Words say anjog karo meray piaray hit rasna har naam ucharay (page 743 Sri Guru Granth Sahib) O Lord, please keep me in the relationship with those in whose company I may recite your name and sing your praises. Keep me detached and away from those who may separate me from you and your service.

6 Conclusion In one of the hymns in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the world is described as a Kajar Ki Kothri, a room full of black powder (used in the East by eye beauticians for eye make up) and it is a rare person who comes out of this room without getting black all over him/her. On the other hand, Guru Nanak Dev Ji describes the world as Eh Jug Suchay Ki Hai Kothri Suchay Ka Which Vase. The Lord s abode, and He is to be sought, found and achieved right here. To be able to find Him and be with Him we have to conquer the blackness of lust, greed, ego, anger, enmity and futile attachments because, in fact, there is no need for all this. ek pita ekus kay hum barack tu mera gur high We are children of one father and members of one big Human Family created in His own image. So let us conclude in the usual Sikh way of concluding all worship by saying nanak naam chardi kala teray bhaney sarbut da bhala In your name, O God, our true father, may everyone in this universe of yours live in peace, joy and tranquillity and above all in your true love
