2 From Your Director I want to thank all the members of the churches of San Jacinto Baptist Association for your prayer support of my family during this time of watching and waiting for my mother to go home to be with the Lord. Although it was difficult, because no one is ever ready nor prepared for that moment, our Lord saw us through and gave all of us a heart of rejoicing for her new self and place of residence. We thank the Lord for an Association of people who are so loving, supportive and kind. So thank you all from the depths of my heart. The Association staff and the Lake Tomahawk staff look forward to seeing you at the annual Open House at the Mission Center. I look forward every year to shaking hands and visiting with pastors, staff members, church members and friends. This year we will enjoy the Open House December 12 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This is an event you will not want to miss. See you there. Christmas has always been a very special time of year for me. Maybe it s the way people seem to be more giving. Or, the way they seem to express verbally that great expression, Merry Christmas to people they don t even know. I have often wondered if the people of Jesus day knew and understood the significance of His birth, how they would have reacted to the news of Jesus birth? This Christmas let us not forget that we are celebrating the birth of our Savior. With each gift that we give, let it be given with a Jesus kind of love. With each person we come in contact with, let us do it in the way Jesus would have done it. With every difficult moment let us face them the way Jesus faced His greatest task. We know that Jesus birth was in God s timetable, and that He would be born of a virgin, and that He might give the gift of His life to pay for our disobedience toward God, so that we could return as adopted children of God. It truly is something to think about. Randy Gilchrist, Executive Director Tuesday Nights Together Who: All ministers What: TNT Tuesday Nights Together When: First Tuesday of each month beginning January 7, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. Where: SJBA Mission Center 1020 Birdsong Dr., Baytown Why: Fellowship with other ministers and discussion of a leadership development topic Light supper provided RSVP requested to or sjba@sanjacintobaptist.com For the Common Good Carey. D. Froelich, Associate Director for Church Enrichment A wonderful legend says that football coach Vince Lombardi, when he met the Green Bay Packers for the first time, held up a football, and said, Men, this is a football! He supposedly went on to talk about the value of the fundamental aspects of the game blocking, tackling, playing with discipline and led that group of men to focus on those elementary principles for winning. The team had experienced years of losing almost a laughing stock among NFL teams. Following his speech and practices based on those ideals, Lombardi s record with those great Packer teams includes 5 titles as the NFL champions in 9 years, and only 1 year that the team finished lower than second in the league. One of the most alarming trends revealed by the annual church profiles submitted by SJBA congregations is a downward drift in Bible Study (Sunday School) enrollment and attendance. Many have suggested that one way to counter that tendency is to get Back to Basics to recapture the fundamental principles that have helped scores of people grow in Christlikeness as they systematically explore God s Word in weekly study sessions. It s time to remember that this old friend the Sunday School hour still offers great hope to every congregation as we obey the Great Commission. Back to Basics is an opportunity for Sunday School leaders for all age groups preschool, children, youth, and adult to remember and reflect on the basics of effective Bible teaching: preparing to teach, understanding the group I teach, and using effective methods in leading the class. South Avenue Baptist Church will host this event on Monday, February 3, We are encouraging every SJBA church to bring its Bible-teaching team to this event. Let s reverse the trend; let s rediscover how getting Back to Basics will help us make disciples as we teach them all things, whatsoever I have commanded you. Help Stuff Stockings If you have not brought your stocking stuffers to the SJBA Mission Center, do so NOW! Individuals are invited to the SJBA office December 5, 2013, to stuff the stockings from 9:30 11:30 a.m. Call if you have questions. The stockings will be distributed during a mission trip to the Valley, December 6-8, It is not too late to go on this mission trip. We need to hear from you now. If you are interested in going, call the Association office at Christmas is based on an exchange of gifts, the gift of God to man His unspeakable gift of His Son, and the gift of man to God when we present our bodies a living sacrifice. 3 Lake Tomahawk News We have had a very busy week this past week. The volunteer Christian builders are with us for one more week. This week they accomplished may projects, small and large at Lake Tomahawk. We are so blessed to have these volunteers with us. Projects worked the first week and completed: Installed new freezer and put new siding on the outside Remodeled Pine 2 restroom Put walking cover on side deck north of the dining hall for Buffet entrance Replaced about 20 ballast in the dining hall and around the camp Repaired the gate in the back of the dining hall other odds and ends New freezer is fully operational at 9 degrees! Week Two: remodel Pine 3 restroom Fix porch in Evergreen Dorm Fix flooring in Evergreen Dorm Adding small porch on north end of Lakeside Dorm Keep all the workers in your prayers for their safety. One man had to go the ER for a small piece of metal in his eye. he is fine now. Also Hubert Ekstrum was moving some sheet metal at the shop and stepped on a Rattle Snake. It was the morning that was 30 degrees and the snake really didn't move much. Praise God! BSM Lunches Thanks to the following churches who have committed to serve the Lee College Baptist Student Ministry. December 5... Baker Road January Coady Baytown January Second Highlands January Templo La Porte The last area of prayer emphasis is the Pasadena Churches who are affiliated with San Jacinto Baptist Association. There are currently 3 churches in this area: 2 Anglo congregations and 1 African American congregation. There are many more Southern Baptist Churches affiliated with Union Baptist Association which makes up the greater Houston area. A Polygon study, of the area surrounding these three churches, shows that there are 121,575 people living within this study area. Of that population 39,025 are Anglos (32%); 2,432 are African Americans (2%); 6,956 are Hispanic (63%); and 2,432 are other (3%). The 2013 ACP summary of the two reporting Churches showed a total membership of 2,055. Last year they baptized 46 and received 27 other additions. Worship attendance averaged 343 and Bible Study averaged 302. The area population is projected to increase by 2% by Pray that new Hispanic congregations will begin. Pray that people will hear the gospel in a cultural way that is relevant to them. Pray that the members of these churches will see themselves as the communities hope. Exciting Times. We are looking forward to Thanksgiving and I wish each of you a blessed holiday. These shops provide our case managers with vouchers to assist our current shelter and transitional housing clients with clothing and dependable furniture. Our buildings have limited storage space. Therefore, we are limited in our capacity to receive and safely store used clothing and furniture. However, we do have a wish list for items that we use frequently and can store efficiently. Call if you can help with these items. Our current list includes the following items: Cleaning supplies Paper products Toiletries Gently used towels and bed linens Disposable diapers
