1 October 28, 2018 St. Joseph & Most Pure Heart of Mary Parishes 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Last weekend, I heard so many positive things about the witness talks given during Mass. Some people wanted to share the story with someone else, while others discovered that there were more than the ones that they heard. In light of this, over the next few weeks we will be sharing the different witness talks in the bulletin so you can read them all and perhaps catch something you didn't hear the first time. Thank you to everyone who gave a witness talk. Fd.vi. Hello I'm Lauren Terry, but many of you know me as Mrs. Terry. I'm the third grade teacher at St. Mary School, the one right across the street. A couple weeks ago I received a call from Father Chris. Now to be honest when I saw who it was I was nervous "Why is my priest calling me? Why is my boss's boss calling me? What did I do now?" He wanted to ask me a question. I was asked to come up here to give my testimony of growing up in the church, what impact had it made for my life, what is my story. Well I can't do that without talking about the school, youth group and the church itself. Let's go back to 1990 something. We moved here from Indiana when I was in 3rd grade. New town. New school. New people. But before we moved here, my future class, at St Mary school, sent me a welcome video. I was able to see the school and meet my class before we even moved. It brought me comfort and made me excited for my new school! This was the first gesture that showed me the love this place inhabits. We are a family of God. We're here to support one another because we are brothers & sisters. The church truly loves it's people. Another way I saw God in this church is through the youth group. I am a proud pioneer of our youth group SLAM. Back when it began the youth pastor was Mark Seitz, my older brother Justin was a part of it so I decided to tag along, like younger sisters do. I saw a bunch of people around my age getting along and witnessing God. This youth group was a modge podge of different social groups. But we were all together because of one thing, God. Mark, the youth pastor taught me so much. I know God was working through him, I've seen it myself. Those of you who knew me then saw a different side of me. Back when then I was troubled. I was angry. I was an outcast. I struggled with life itself. I thought no one understood me. But through this youth group I was changed. SLAM went to the Alive music festival and I was surrounded with people just like me. People wearing band t-shirts, rocking out to good music and it just brought me so much joy to see Christians behaving this way. They are worshiping God through good music. You can pray through music? I love music! I no longer felt alone. I felt joy and the good in the world. This got me hooked on going to church and SLAM events. Then the summer camps began. We were a haggard group of parish teenagers that spent a week together playing games, having bible studies, and deep conversations together. Again, I didn't feel alone. Getting to know each other and getting to know God fueled my soul once again. There began this band of brothers and sisters through Jesus. We all belonged, no one was being judged, it was Christianity at its finest. Here at this church, we all belong. There are no labels, no judgements, only love and compassion. After I realized that, I was graced by the Holy Spirit with Joy. This is what changed me to become a happier version of myself. God loves everyone, no matter what. In this church I've seen people bounce back from the worst life's challenges. They made it through because of God, and because of your support. I've made it through too. "I was lost but now I'm found". We've all gotten lost and will continue to do so, we're humans after all. But we are all important, we are all loved, we are all children of God. No matter what you are going through, you're truly not alone. Someone here has been through it too. Someone here at this church is praying for you. I've seen truly amazing things here. I've cried happy and sorrowful tears in this place. This house of God has given me peace, comfort and joy. Like a good house should. There are many elements that make up Most Pure Heart of Mary, we have the priest, the school, youth group, bible studies, the parish office and so much more. But most importantly we have love! Like Father Chris says "Remember, the church loves you, God loves you, and we love you." 3 October 28, 2018 St.Joseph & Most Pure Heart of Mary Parishes 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on the Readings 30th Sunday In Ordinary Time taken from St. Joseph Sunday Missal First Reading - Jeremiah 31 :7-9 The setting is the long-awaited homecoming of the Israelites from their exile in Babylon. "Shout with joy for our Jacob (Israel, God's people)." The author never lost trust in God that sometime or somehow he would heal the wounds of his people. The weak, lame, and blind are with the returning exiles. God cares! The fact that "God cares" is also God's word to us now. "The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy'') Responsorial Psalm). Second Reading - Hebrews 5:1-6 The author refers again to the Jewish high priest officiating in the temple of Jerusalem. He represents human beings to God by offering gifts and sacrifices. It is stated that Jesus is the high priest of the community and as such appointed by God. Jesus exercises his priesthood in heaven. Constantly referring to his sacrificial death on the cross, he pleads for mercy for all of us. Gospel - Mark 10:46-52 Mark wrote his Gospel to heal a certain "Christological blindness" in the Church of his day. Spectacular preachers, themselves a kind of miracle workers and faith healers, had come along. They preached Jesus as a divine miracle-man and themselves as his successors. Mark did not find this picture of Jesus compatible with Jesus as he really was; the one who redeemed us by his suffering, death, and resurrection. Hence, Mark describes Jesus's miracles as signs that indicate a spiritual reality. In the healing of the blind man the reality is the healing of a "Christological blindness," a blindness of mind that kept Mark's congregation from seeing Jesus as he really is. - Submitted by Barb Castor COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: Shelby Help Line Ministries 29 ½ Walnut Street Rear You may submit your own name or the name of someone you know who needs help this Christmas with food and toys. Attendance Last Sunda : 109 "' " 65% Monthly Goal 22% Quarter Goal DID YOU KNOW? All Saints Day During the year the Church celebrates one by one the feasts of the saints. This week she joins them all in one festival. In addition to those whose names she knows she recalls in a magnificent vision all the others "of all n tions and tribes standing before the throne and in sight of the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands, proclaiming Him who redeemed them in His Blood." The feast of All Saints should inspire us with tremendous hope. Among the saints in heaven are some whom we have known. All lived on earth lives like our own. They were baptized, marked with the sign of faith, were faithful to Christ's teaching, and they have gone before us to the heavenly home where they call on us to follow them. This week the Church celebrates all the saints: canonized or beatified, and the multitude of those who are in heaven enjoying the beatific vision that are only known to God. During the early centuries the Saints venerated by the Church were all martyrs. Later, the Popes set November 1 as the day for commemorating all the Saints. We all have this "universal call to holiness." What must we to do to join the company of the saints in heaven? We "must follow in His footsteps and conform ourselves to His image seeking the will of the Father in all things. We must devote ourselves with all our being to the glory of God and the service of our neighbor. In this way, the holiness of the People of God will grow into an abundant harvest of good, as is admirably shown by the life of so many saints in Church history" (Lumen Gentium, 40). All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. Between the two parishes Saint Joseph and Most Pure Heart of Mary there are ample times to participate in Mass. The times and locations are as follows: Oct 31st - 7:00 p.m. - St. Joseph, Plymouth and Nov 1st - 9:00 a.m. (School Mass) and 7:00 p.m. Most Pure Heart of Mary, Shelby. Let us gather together to give glory and praise to our God. Submitted by: Sherry Stockmaster 5 View this bulletin onllne at
