1 St. Joseph & Most Pure Heart of Mary Parishes Magnificat: Five Lessons of the Magi The unforgettable story of the journey of the Magi, as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew, is an artful summary of the principal dynamics of the spiritual life. Watching the night sky with scrupulous attention for signs of God s purpose, the Magi evoke the importance of alertness in the spiritual order. We must keep our eyes open to see what God is up to. For far too many people, the spiritual life never gets underway, precisely because they don t pay attention. Once they saw the star, they moved, despite the length of the journey and the dangers of the road. Sometimes people know what God wants them to do, but they don t act, either out of fear or laziness or the influence of bad habits. In their confident journeying forth, the Magi teach us not to miss the propitious moment. They teach us to move. When they entered into Herod s territory, the Magi caught the attention of the king. And when they spoke to him of the birth of a new King of the Jews, Herod became frantic and tried to use them in order to destroy the baby. A third lesson: when you walk the path that God has laid out for you, expect opposition. We live in a sinful, fallen world, and there will always be forces at cross purposes to God. Refusing to cooperate with Herod s game, the wise men came to Bethlehem, found the child, and gave him their precious gifts. When you come to Christ, don t give him your second best; break open the very best of yourself and make it a gift for him. Finally, they were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod and so they returned to their home country by another route. As Fulton Sheen commented so magnificently: of course they did; for no one comes to Christ and goes back the same way he came! --Very Rev. Robert Barron Submitted by Barb Pifher, Pastoral Associate GOSPEL OF LUKE FINALE: On Saturday, January 9th at 7:00 a.m. we will have the last and final class on the Gospel of Luke. This was postponed from November. For those who have faithfully attended the monthly classes, we will wrap up the session on Luke this day. I hope that you will be able to join us. ATTENTION CYO SPORTS PARENTS AND FANS: The winter basketball season is about to begin and MPHM Parish is still without an Athletic Director. Currently our Youth Minister is acting as interim AD. Her interim role will discontinue at the end of the winter season. CYO Sports at MPHM Parish will be discontinued during the 2016/17 school year if we do not have an Athletic Director in place by July 1, CYO is a great opportunity for youth and parents to celebrate being part of the larger Catholic community. Please prayerfully consider being our volunteer Athletic Director. - Fr. Jim BULLETIN DEADLINE: Mondays 10:00 a.m. for the upcoming weekend. 3 Members of St. Juan Diego Deanery in the Diocese of Toledo RICHLAND COUNTY SPREAD THE LIGHT Richland County Spread the Light is a localized approach to Project Blue Light which originated in 1988 in Philadelphia when a relative of a fallen police officer placed a memorial blue light in a window along with other seasonal decorations. Its intent was to show others that they are not alone in their loss and to remember the officer who died. The concept has caught on nationwide. In 2015, a former Virginia policeman created National Blue Light Week to start something positive for law enforcement. The goal of Richland County Spread the Light is to promote pride in our local law enforcement, firefighters and first responders, partnership in all communities of Richland County and peace in our neighborhoods. BLUE is the symbolic color of peace. We are asking Richland County municipalities, residents, businesses, churches, schools and organizations to come together to help Spread the Light by putting a blue light bulb on their porch or business during the week of January 10-16, 2016, and beyond to show support for the men and women who put their lives on the line everyday to protect and serve the citizens of Richland County. Richland County Spread the Light week will be celebrated January 10-16, Tuesday, January 5, 2016, in Mansfield City Council Chambers. A press conference at 10:00 a.m. to announce Richland County Spread the Light. Richland County Spread the Light Week events: Sunday, January 10: Preachers and police spread the light sermons. Come join us in worshipping our God in prayer, song and private time before your God. HELP MAKE YOUR PARISH BETTER! Every parish has areas where we can improve. One of these in our parish is volunteering to take on responsibilities within the life of our parish. I often hear, well they never asked me to do anything! It is nearly impossible, although at times I have come to and personally asked someone to do something, but for the most part, when an article is written such as this, this invitation is to YOU! Ministries continue to be needed in our parish! Even though I do weekly communion calls to the homebound and institutionalized, there are many facets of ministry within the Church, our parish doesn t touch! We need people like YOU to minister not only to those here every Sunday but in homes, in prayer, and many other areas. The more people that volunteer, the easier it is to reach out and keep our arms around our community. I often hear we don t understand why people stop coming to Church, or why those people that used to sit in the second pew on the right hand side no longer come. One of the biggest reasons is because most Catholics feel that they are not welcomed. Resolving this dilemma is not easy! But with the help of many, the tasks becomes smaller. In this Year of Mercy which began on Dec. 8 th and will continue throughout the next year, we here at St. Joseph Catholic Church must reach out and become more active in our community, in the life of Christ, in our spirituality, and in our faith! We can do that simply by saying yes as Mary said yes to God in her call to serve. We are all called to service! That is our Baptism! We very much need people, adults as well as youth to serve Mass, Lector, Usher, and Greet the faithful! Everyone plays a part in the life of the Church, rich, poor, we must all give of our time, talents, and treasures to keep Christ alive in our community! Can you help us? Can you give of your time on the weekend, during the week, or even some evening? If we get enough people to say YES, we can open new ministries, making our parish excel! Pray about it! When you hear God asking you what you could do, say yes, step forward, let Deacon Fred or Sharon Sutter know of your decision. We will work with you to help you grow in your faith, your commitment, and your love of God and His Church.

6 Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish SLAM IS GOING ON A PILGRIMAGE! I am excited to share with you that SLAM is taking seven high school students to the March for Life in Washington D.C. in January. These young people are very active both here in our parish and at school. They are faith filled and are very excited about this opportunity. The trip is $210 per person, not including meals, which isn t much, but for families of active teenagers, it adds up very quickly. On behalf of these young people and myself, I would like to ask you to consider a donation to help sponsor our trip to support life in our nation s capital in just a few short weeks. To make a donation there is more information about our pilgrimage in the front and back of church or you can stop at the parish office during the week. If donations go above and beyond for this trip, the extra will be donated back to the parish. Thank you so much for your time and consideration! We appreciate all of your support and prayers. --Kari Krebs, Youth Minister CHURCH CLEANERS: I will be making a new list of church cleaners for Please call and let me know if you are still able to clean.
