1 St. Joseph & Most Pure Heart of Mary Parishes My Dear Friends of St. Joseph and Most Pure Heart of Mary Parishes, A good friend of mine has spent his life as a priest ministering to the Hearing Impaired Community. I thought of him as soon as I read today s Gospel excerpt. Through him I ve come to know some people in the Catholic Hearing Impaired Community. When I was pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Toledo the local deaf community joined that parish. I was always impressed with their enthusiastic worship at Mass. I never heard a single deaf person ask me why they were born this way. They thank God for the gift of their lives, prayerfully support one another and reach out to other people in need of God s healing love. As Jesus cried out Ephphatha (be opened) the deaf man was cured. How many of us at times are closed minded and deaf to the needs of those near us and around the world. It is important that we stay in tune with world issues so that we can direct our prayers to God for those who suffer. For example, this past week I watched a National Geographic special about the Ivory trade in Central Africa. Endangered elephants are being slaughtered and their ivory sold to Sudan who then sells the ivory on the black market to support rebel groups all over the world (including ISIS). African children have been enslaved, parents slaughtered and women raped. I didn t realize the situation was so bad until I watched this documentary. It was as if Jesus laid His hands on my head that evening and cried out Ephphatha. Let us all pray that our minds can be opened to the evil in this world so we can work and pray for its victims. Let us all continue to remain positive in our fight against evil much like the local Hearing Impaired Community within our diocese. Stay alert and awake! Fr. 4 St. Joseph & Most Pure Heart of Mary Parishes Reflections on the Readings Theme: The Healing Activity of Our Lord A healthy person, who seldom or never needs a physician, finds difficulty in understanding the anguish, frustration, and never-to-be fulfilled desires of the physically handicapped. In primitive societies and prescientific times, the condition of the handicapped was even worse than it is today. There were no rehabilitation programs for them, no wheelchairs or any equipment that gave them as least some relief. Since religious beliefs regarded their misery as related to sin and moral guilt, they were often outcasts for whom nobody cared. We find it altogether natural, therefore, that the writers of the Bible used to wretched situation of the lame, the blind, the deaf, the epileptics, and the lepers (all of whom they believed to be in the power of demons) as a figure to describe humankind's alienation from God, and the healing of these people as the sign of God's powerful and caring presence. Ethically speaking, we could be like some of those handicapped. Pray that the Lord may open your ears to listen to his message. First Reading (Is 35:4-7A) This passage is attributed to Second Isaiah and addressed to the exiles in Babylon, who are about to go home. The return from exile was seen as God's redemptive act, hence one accompanied by miraculous healings as a sign of God's redemptive presence. "Here is your God...he comes to save you. Later the early Church applied this poem to the saving ministry of Jesus, and we have an example of this in today's Gospel. Human beings, handicapped in various ways, turn to God and pray with the words of the Responsorial Psalm. Second Reading (Jas 2:1-5) James has some advice for the hospitality committee of your parish and for all of us. Can strangers, people of other races, young and old feel welcome, or are they just tolerated in your church? What can you do? Gospel (Mk 7:31-37) We must be careful to note that Mark wants us to see the miracles of Jesus as signs of a hidden reality to come. Jesus is not like the traditional miracle-workers circulating in his day; his miracles are not ends in themselves. Mark brings this out by having Jesus order silence time and again after each miracle. Hence, we must meditate on what Mark wants to teach by relating this tradition. We offer a few suggestions. We may know some people who are deaf to God's word. As the friends of the deaf man did, we could make them acquainted with our Lord. The reading shows that Jesus is concerned; he takes the handicapped man aside and heals him utilizing some of the gestures that healers of the time also use and are thus likely to be understood by the poor man before him who is undoubtedly a pagan (symbolism of our Sacraments!). Are you concerned about those who are deaf to God's word? You could talk with them and introduce them to your priest. Reflections are taken from the New Saint Joseph Sunday Missal & submitted by Barb Pifher

9 Most Pure Heart of Mary Parish Our Parish School News Greetings Parish Family!: We ve had an amazing week! Classrooms were buzzing with projects and lots of newness. Teachers are using Ascend (our new gradebook) to post student assignments and links to web sites. Students are raving about science; they love the projects! Math is going well. As you know, we have a new math program this year. Our scholars are doing an AMAZING job of getting acclimated and I am so proud of their teamwork. They are quick to support each other in learning and understanding the new tools available. Chief Combs was here, welcoming students into our school. This is an initiative he has developed across the schools to encourage building community with students and families. We look forward to having the presence of the Shelby police force; they make a difference for us! In leadership classes, we are currently focusing on the life skill of trustworthiness. Last week, students learned that, much like tall buildings require a strong, sturdy foundation, so do we! When we develop life skills in leadership early, we are sure to have a solid foundation to grow on. You and your family are invited! Grandparents Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 9 th following Children s Mass at 9:00 a.m. We encourage our guests to attend Mass, but if that is not an option, we will begin our celebration for guests at 9:45 a.m. in McFadden Hall (the gym). Fall fund raiser We are changing it up this year! Rather than send home 4 catalogs, we are simplifying. We searched for an affordable product that everyone needs and found it! This year, our fall fund raiser is trash bags. Sounds odd, but it is practical! Please feel free to contact the school to place your order! Thank you for keeping our school and parish in your prayers! You make a difference. We are truly blessed, Lisa M. Rhodes, MSM
