2 OCTOBER 2, 2016 WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY PRELUDE We Come as Guests Invited Emma Lou Diemer CHIMING OF THE HOUR WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS We are delighted that you have joined us this Lord s Day. If you are interested in membership, we invite you to speak to Rev. Susan. Thank you for being with us! GATHERING AROUND GOD S WORD CHORAL INTROIT Where Armies Scourge the Countryside Perry Nelson CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Destruction and violence are everywhere; strife and contention are all around. Congregation: The needs of the world are so great; O Lord, increase our faith. Leader: The law is slack, and justice does not prevail. Congregation: The needs of the world are so great; O Lord, increase our faith. Leader: How many threats surround us: warfare, homelessness, loneliness, loss. Congregation: The needs of the world are so great, but you, O God, are greater still-- the One in whom all things are possible. O Lord, increase our faith in you! MORNING PRAYER Faithful Lord, present in sorrow, present in hope, allow our lament with space to seek you, that we may not forget that your steadfast love never ceases and your Spirit forever flows. Amen. *HYMN NO. 420 God of Grace and God of Glory CALL TO CONFESSION God answers those who seek mercy; salvation comes to those who wait for the Lord. Therefore, let us confess all we have done, and what we have not done, trusting in God s grace. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, you have called us to live in sincere faith and to suffer for the gospel. We confess that we do not come before you with a clear conscience. Our faith is clouded by sin and uncertainty. We shrink from your call to live sacrificially on behalf of others. Too quickly, we seek our own ease and comfort first. We confess that in our own lives, and in the church, we rely on our own power rather than yours. Forgive us, we pray, for we are fractured and fearful disciples. Take away from us a spirit of cowardice, and restore to us the spirit of power rightly used, of love unconditionally offered, and of self-discipline gracefully lived. In new mercy, forgive us and increase our faith, that we may be faithful servants at your table. In Christ's name we pray. Amen. CHORAL RESPONSE Where Homes are Torn by Bitter Strife Perry Nelson DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS The power of God has saved us; grace is given to us in Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light. *Please stand as you are able. *GLORIA PATRI HYMN NO. 579 Glory be to the Creator, and to the Christ and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and always shall be, world without end! Amen, amen. THE PEACE Leader: Let us now share the peace which Jesus made possible... Peace be with you. Congregation: And also with you. Leader: Please greet those near to you with the peace of Christ. CHILDREN S TIME ANTHEM The Eyes of All Wait Upon Thee Jean Berger PROCLAIMING GOD S WORD PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Holy God, speak your word; let those who hear guard the good treasure entrusted to them with the help of the Holy Spirit, living in us all. Amen. SCRIPTURE READINGS OLD TESTAMENT Lamentations 1:1-6 PSALM Psalm 137 NEW TESTAMENT 2 Timothy 1:1-14 GOSPEL Luke 17:5-10 SERMON THE LORD S SUPPER Rev. By asking this, they acknowledge that faith does not grow by our own works and hard efforts but is a gift from God s grace. How has the gift of faith in your own life changed over time? Was there a particular time when your faith weakened? Can you recall a time when the strength of your faith helped you endure? God often uses special people in our lives to help us grow in faith and understanding. Who has helped you grow in faith? Household Prayer: Morning Silent sunrise sanctuary a dome of shelter for the birth of day. Birds and bugs begin an opposite of lullaby proclaiming life anew. We wake in wonder discerning between dream and daylight a mystery ends, another begins. Sunshine scatters shadows a heathery view melting gray morning mist. Never ceasing, never ending God s mercies new each morning. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening dusk to dark to full moon brightness blue night sky speckling of stars and planets white lights forever patterned read and known but you knew them first and through them allowed yourself to become known Thank You Praise You and Goodnight. Amen.

4 THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER GREAT THANKSGIVING Leader: The Lord be with you Congregation: And also with you Leader: Lift up your hearts. Congregation: We lift them to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Congregation: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: It is truly right and our greatest joy Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name: You are holy, O God of majesty Great is the mystery of faith: According to Christ s commandment: We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory......through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Leader: The gifts of God for the people of God. Congregation: Thanks be to God.
