Church Council Minutes Commemoration of the Dead All Saints' Day falls on the first Sunday of November. It is a day when we commemorate those we have lost as well as the Christians who have lived before us and have testified to their Christian faith. The history of the commemoration of the dead in the Church In the Middle Ages the Church celebrated both All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. All Saints' Day was the day In the Middle Ages the Church celebrated both All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. All Saints' Day was the day when the Church remembered the Christian martyrs, i.e. those who had died because of their faith, whereas All Souls' Day was the day when the Church commemorated and prayed for the dead.

2 The idea was to help the dead go through purification in purgatory and enter into heaven by praying for them. At the Reformation in the 16th century the existence of purgatory as a place of punishment or purification was rejected. Consequently, All Souls' Day was abolished. The Church kept All Saints' Day to commemorate those who died for the sake of their faith. This year we remember: Dan Tucker Wesley Moffett Roberta Inslemann WHAT DOES THE WORD SAINT MEAN? The English word saint derives from the Latin sanctus, which means holy. WHO ARE THE SAINTS? God declares everyone who has been baptized and believes the promise of the gospel to be justified, holy, and blameless. The communion of saints therefore includes both those still living on earth and those who have died in the faith and are now living in heaven. All Saint s Day celebrations today Many parish churches have a tradition of inviting the relatives of those who have passed away during the year to a special commemoration service on All Saints' Sunday. The names of the parishioners who have passed away are read out loud at the service. Many people visit the graveyard or the cemetery on All Saints' Day and it has become common to light a candle on the grave of loved ones. The Call Committee normally meets every third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm. However this month, due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, they will meet Tuesday, November 27th instead. All who are interested in helping us find a new Pastor are encouraged and welcome to come. We are in the Christmas parade! There is a permission slip for children that will need to be filled out before they can participate. We are looking for donated candy canes ( 6 or bigger) to be handed out at the parade.

4 Sunday School Christmas P Dick McMeans has generously donated 2wireless microphone sets (4 microphones) to Holy Cross. His neighborhood watch group meets at our church once a month. 6 Mama's Bible Four brothers left home for college, and they became successful doctors and lawyers. One evening, they chatted after having dinner together. They discussed the 95th birthday gifts they were able to give their elderly mother who moved to Florida. The first said, "You know I had a big house built for Mama." The second said, And I had a large theater built in the house." The third said, "And I had my Mercedes dealer deliver an SL600 to her." The fourth said, "You know how Mama loved reading the Bible and you know she can't read anymore because she can't see very well. I met the preacher who told me about a parrot who could recite the entire Bible. It took ten preachers almost 8 years to teach him. I had to pledge to contribute $50,000 a year for five years to the church, but it was worth it. Mama only has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot will recite it." The other brothers were impressed. After the celebration Mama sent out her "Thank You" notes. She wrote: Milton, the house you built is so huge that I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house. Thanks anyway." "Marvin, I am too old to travel. I stay home; I have my groceries delivered, so I never use the Mercedes. The thought was good. Thanks." "Michael, you gave me an expensive theater with Dolby sound and it can hold 50 people, but all of my friends are dead, I've lost my hearing, and I'm nearly blind. I'll never use it. Thank you for the gesture, just the same." "Dearest Melvin, you were the only son to have the good sense to give a little thought to your gift. The chicken was delicious. Thank you so much." 10 Holy Cross Lutheran Church Council Minutes October 10, 2018 was called to order at 7:00 pm with an invocation from Stephan Ellis. Minutes for September 12, council meeting was approved. Reports: Pastor: Stephan reports that Pastor Tim will have another CT scan on October 23 rd. Education: No report. Elders: Stephan Ellis makes several home visits, every week after Communion Service. Pastor Schneider received a Prayer Blanket and told him he loved it. Jonith Grundmann would like the Elders to contact the Rockrohr family as well as the Johnson s. New mics were donated to the church and work great. Yvonne commented that they could hear announcements better. Evangelism: Debby reports that Tom talked to Jason from Family Promise, and we will not be hosting them any more this year. Tom says that we should be getting a new schedule for next year, in the next couple of weeks. Tom Zivkovic also reports that Jason would like us to have training for Family Promise a week prior to our next hosting. Tom would like him to also come speak to the congregation beforehand. Learning Center: Board of Directors-Linda Hillard (Executive Director), Sarah Head, Joe Diaz, Shandel Martinez, Rachel McGlothlin, Rosemary Templeton. Enrollment: The center is currently licensed for 60 and has an enrollment of 60. Out of that 60, 4 are church members. There are 2 babies, and 3 toddlers on the waiting list. Items Purchased: Gym Pone $25.00 and internet $45.99, Coffee, Tea, Lemonade, Paper goods and cleaning supplies-$288.31, Guardian Security-$90.00, Maintenance man the total for September is: $1, The total for the year, 2018 is: $11, Business: Enrollment is to capacity, waiting list only with 2 kids starting Friday. Let the yellow room teacher go, in the process of hiring for yellow room now. Waivers have been signed for video and permission slips for parade passed out. Stewardship: 72 letters were mailed out for the Stewardship drive and 28 letters of commitment came in response. Monday 43 reminders went out and out of the 43 reminders 16 of those people pledged last year. Tabitha Guild: At our September 18 th meeting, we had a short Bible study and then worked on preparations for the Confirmation Sunday (Sept. 30 th ) reception in the Parish hall. Next we prepared small gift bags to give to ladies of our church for LWML Sunday on Oct. 7 th as well as deciding who could help with the church service and refreshments on that date. We also packed the 38 Personal Care kits that had been donated by the congregation and took them with us to the Lawton Zone Fall Fest which was held Sept. 22 nd at St. John s here in Lawton. Eight of our members were able to attend this event. Our next meeting is Oct. 16 th at 7 pm and Jeri Mossiman from the Lawton Food Bank will be our speaker. We invite all ladies in our congregation to come and join us. The Soup/Salad and Desert Auction has been moved to November 4 th. God s blessings to you all! Treasurer: General Fund Balance as of Sept. 30 is $38, The Capital Improvement fund is $51,468.40, and the Uncommitted Capital Improvement fund is $17, The balance looks good because we aren t paying Pastor s salary and insurance, otherwise we would be short because Sunday deposits are very low. Financial Secretary: Last month we were behind in giving and we are even more behind by a difference of $12,000 less than this time last year. The only thing helping us right now is

11 we aren t paying a Pastor. When we do get a new Pastor it will begin to affect us. Trustees: Fixed a broken water line downstairs in the ceiling. Gas leaks are fixed. The lights replaced in the gym are good to go and once we have more money saved we would like to replace the lights in the church with LED also. Old Business: New digital sign has been ordered, and it will be approximately 6 weeks for it to come in. Jonith Grundmann says we will table the conversation about the Murphy Beds for the Youth Room for Family Promise overnight hosts, since we aren t hosting anymore this year. Call Committee will have its second meeting on October 17 th. We have received a name from Wichita Falls to consider for the call and will look into it. Murder Mystery Dinner was a lot of fun and everyone that attended had a great time. More dinners will be planned in the future. Fellowship Committee is very busy with a Wedding Shower and a Baby Shower, so it will probably not happen again until next year. New Business: Steve Grundmann announces that there will not be a representative from Holy Cross to go to the meeting in Moore to vote on delegates for the National Convention. Steve also has received ballots for Regional and National ballots. They need to be in by February 28 th and he will bring it before the congregation in the January Voter s meeting. Stephan Ellis moved to give Pastor Schneider $ a month for the services he is providing to the church and our confirmands every Wednesday. Steve Grundmann seconded the motion and it was passed. Stephan brought up the licensed Deacon program and informs us that the Oklahoma District no longer has the program. There is a mission training based out of Oregon. 56 hours to earn a certificate and it would be up to District if they will honor it. Stephan has asked Pastor Schneider to mentor him and he said he would. The cost would be $ dollars a month plus a $30.00 entrance fee. Steve Grundmann made a motion to support Stephan in his quest to be a licensed Lay Minister. The motion was seconded by Angela Schonvisky and it was passed. Jonith motioned to add the janitor to the letter for a Christmas bonus, which was seconded by Debby Warren. Motion passed. was adjourned at 8:31 pm with the LORD s Prayer.
