1 Holy Cross Herald Volume 39, Issue 4 May 2017 IN THIS ISSUE 1.) Pastor Tim s Article 2.) Church Council Minutes 3.) Church Calendar 4.) Photos of headlines & happenings 5.) Information on upcoming events. 6.) Puzzles & Games From the office of the Secretary: 4 Reasons VBS Is Important to Holy Cross Lutheran Church! Every year, more than 25,000 churches host VBS and more than 3 million people experience it. Here are four reasons why so many people participate in VBS every year. If you are not sure VBS is for you, here are a few things to consider: 1. VBS is a dependable ongoing ministry. VBS can be a short-term event with long-term results. With a typical five-day time from, VBS offers a chance to pull out all the stops and create an unforgettable experience. Research shows connections made during VBS result in salvations, discovery of church prospects and potential workers for other ongoing children s programs. Also, it is not uncommon for a leader to volunteer to help for just on week of VBS, and feel God s tug on his or her heart to work with kids permanently. 2. VBS creates lasting memories. VBS is a special event that creates memories that help lock Bible truths in a child s heart and mind for a lifetime. Birthday parties and other special events have themes that use creativity to evoke feelings of excitement. Games, food, decorations and fun all link together in a total package. VBS does the same thing. When we connect with kids through this ministry, the biblical truths that permeate all aspects of VBS also connect with their hearts and minds.

2 3. VBS is an opportunity to share the gospel. VBS is an intentional evangelistic opportunity. The biblical content built into the curriculum lays foundational truths that help kids understand who Jesus is and why they need a personal Savior. The relationships we, as a church, develop with kids and their families can provide many opportunities to not only show the love of Jesus, but to share the truth of the gospel. 4. VBS is an event that you can customize. VBS is what you make it. When you provide an on-campus experience that encourages your church kids to bring their friends, the purpose of sharing the good news about Jesus is for all. Adding to that, the personalized missions we select will teach them about giving of themselves. VBS is the resource. Kids will come to love and talk about the events that excite them, engage them and help them to know that God and the people at Holy Cross really care about them. VBS is an opportunity to ignite the imagination of Holy Cross Lutheran church, involve volunteers for a specific doable commitment and connect with the kids in our church and community. The methods we use will create memories. The message we share will change lives. Still don t think VBs is for you? You won t know for sure until you try. That I can tell you from personal experience, as I look forward to this year s VBS. For the joy of spreading the gospel, Carolyn Ellis What You Don t Know Can Hurt You! If you are age learn your risk for developing 6 different chronic diseases $3 out of every $4 spent on healthcare is for treatment of chronic disease Better lifestyle habits can help prevent 80% of heart disease and 90% of type 2 diabetes The 6 for Life Health Assessment measures your risk of developing 6 chronic diseases, including heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke, diabetes, COPD and lung cancer. She would stand on her front porch and shout PRAISE THE LORD! Next door to her lived an atheist who would get so angry at her proclamations he would shout, There ain t no Lord!! Hard times set in on the elderly lady, and she prayed for GOD to send her some assistance. She stood on her porch and shouted PRAISE THE LORD. GOD I NEED FOOD!! I AM HAVING A HARD TIME. PLEASE LORD, SEND ME SOME GROCERIES!! The next morning the lady went out on her porch and noted a large bag of groceries and shouted, PRAISE THE LORD. The neighbor jumped from behind a bush and said, Aha! I told you there was no Lord. I bought those groceries, God didn t. The lady started jumping up and down and clapping her hands and said, PRAISE THE LORD. He not only sent me groceries, but He made the devil pay for them. Praise the Lord!

7 Holy Cross Lutheran Church Council Meeting Minutes April 12, 2017 Meeting was called to order at 7:31 pm with Pastor Timothy Wangerin giving the invocation. March 8 th, 2017 minutes were approved with the change to the amount received from Thrivent. Reports: Pastor: Personal- Had to have sheet rock replaced at the house. I will be picking up Ashley from school the first week in May. Found a new doctor in town which means lots of tests. Would like to take the second to last Sunday in July off, for a family reunion in Nebraska. Congregational- Pastor recognizes the budget constraints and apologizes for the medical expenses that are coming in now. But it is unavoidable. This week is Maundy Thursday and Good Friday followed by Easter which we are still following the Lenten Series Places of Passion. Confirmation is scheduled for June 4 th. After the Easter Holiday, he will put out a survey asking about going to communion services every week. Attendance has been up recently. Visited Wesley Moffett and is now possibly facing more cancer. Prayers for him are needed. Education: Nothing to report at this time. Elders: We will be having a full staff for the Easter holiday services. Elders are serving a brunch to be catered by golden Corral and would like council to pay for it out of the budget. Hoping for food for about 60 people.. Will also put up a basket for a free will offering to pay back the church. Phil Erdmann motioned to allow Angela to issue a check for the brunch. Fred Rowzee seconded and motion was passed. Drinks will be taken care of by the Elders. Evangelism: Family Promise is next week on April 23 rd and we don t have any idea how many there will be yet. Learning Center: Board of Directors- Linda Hillard Executive Director, Sarah Head, Joe Diaz, Shandel Martinez, Rachel McGlothlin, Rosemary Templeton, Carolyn Pulley. Enrollement- We are enrolled to full capacity. There are 7 on the waiting list that will start in May or June, which means we will open the second nursery back up. Business- During the last heavy rains, we sustained substantial flooding in the red and green rooms. The Spring Program will take place on May 2 nd at 5:30 with refreshments to follow. Lost two employees but have since replaced them. Bobby the maintenance man is back! Stewardship: Fred and Pastor Tim are currently reviewing materials for the Stewardship drive in September. We hope to have all the materials in August. Tabitha Guild: Our meeting this week is dinner out at the Silver Spoon restaurant at 6:00pm. The ladies are also prepping for Confirmation. Treasurer: An Elder s fund has been added to the budget, under estimated income and operations. Financial Secretary: Giving is fine right now. We are ahead of the game right now. There are 76 envelopes of which 61 have given at least once this year. Envelopes for next year have been ordered. We will receive only 110 boxes and will be taking old envelopes and blanking out the dates and numbers and set out for people that may have forgotten their envelopes and want to use them. Trustees: We had a bee expert come out and remove bees from the church soffit. Because of the weather we were not able to finish replacing the boards. We will do that soon and have to hire the bucket lift guy to come back. Air

8 conditioning season is upon us and the choir loft unit is not working. That will have to be repaired. Old Business: In original Minutes. New Business: Rita Browning would like to use the gym for a Free Bingo Night on the last day of VBS, June 9 th from 7-9 pm. Council approved saying we didn t need to vote on this. Angela is wondering when and how to pay future missions. When asked what the missions were, she informed us that Family Promise, Lutheran Hour Radio and District were the current missions. Carolyn made a suggestion to take the old hymnals and fold them for a fundraiser, for money for missions. Meeting was adjourned at 8:28 pm with The Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted by Carolyn Ellis VBS Beginning and beginning again During the coming weeks, as you or loved ones celebrate graduation, remember it isn t a closed door, an end or a farewell. Instead, it s an entryway threshold, a beginning, a hello and one of many such opportunities that mark life. God wants us to know that life is a series of beginnings, not endings, just as graduations are not terminations but commencements, writes Bernie Siegel. Creation is an ongoing process, and when we create a perfect world where love and compassion are shared by all, suffering will cease. Of course, we can create a perfect world only by letting God guide our actions. So, dear graduates, may you partner with God to meet suffering with love, kindness and compassion through all the new beginnings of your life! Bonus surprise to those who register for VBS by May 7 th. Lutheran Hour Radio Program Sunday/8:00 am FM
