1 No.028 May 2018 A Monthly Newsletter for Chilmark & Ridge and Fonthill Bishop with Berwick St Leonard 100 years ago This coming August will mark the 100th anniversary of an Auction Sale on behalf of the Earl of Pembroke s Estate of much of the land, and many of the houses and cottages, in Chilmark. Amongst the 32 Lots was the Black Dog Inn (which at the time included a 48-acre small farm) along with Chilmark Manor Farm and Village Farm, off Frog Lane. These last two properties alone comprised nearly 1,000 acres plus some 18 cottages, in addition to the two farmhouses themselves. The Sale documents give a fascinating insight into life in the village 100 years ago. More details to follow in the June issue of The Village Voice. Village Voice News Current and back issues of The Village Voice can be downloaded from the website: If you wish to share village news or information, please info@chilmarkvillagevoice.co.uk In this issue Contact Numbers 2 What s On & Diary 3 Village News 4-6 Church Times 7-9 Other News Recycling & Waste 13 Local Police 14 Goods & Services Welcome to the May issue of The Village Voice So spring has finally sprung and we can look forward to summer in Chilmark; cricket matches and teas at Cleeves Farm and the Church Fete in the gardens of The Old Rectory will be amongst highlights. In last month s issue we reported that Chilmark might be without a Horticultural Village Show this year, owing to a lack of willing organizers. A questionnaire seeking residents views had prompted the suggestion that perhaps the Church Fete and Village Show should be combined in future? This could make it easier to recruit willing working parties for the essential tasks of tent erection and tarpaulin tugging. Certainly newcomers to the village, though delighted by the number of events on offer each summer, are puzzled as to the whys and wherefores when they learn of the sheer hard graft involved in running two shows. Hence we turned to longer term resident Neil Pattenden to ask how and why Chilmark has been so good at hosting two key village events each summer. See page 6 for Neil s excellent explanation. We would be delighted to know our readers views on this subject - please send your thoughts to the Editor (via or longhand - contact details on page 2). Meanwhile, Church Fete organizer Felicity Pattenden would be delighted to hear from anyone able to help at this year s Fete on Saturday 16 June (p4). More immediately, things to do and see in the coming month include the chance to explore the stunning gardens and grounds of both Fonthill House and Old Fonthill Abbey (p14). And, should you have any time to spare, Cricket Tea organisers Bev Small and Claire Allen would love to hear from you with the offer of a cake or two (see contacts on page 2). Finally everyone is invited to help out at the churchyard working party at St Margaret s church on Saturday 6 May (p8). We wish everyone a happy May. The Editorial Team

The ground staff have been busy preparing the pitch, cleaning out the clubhouse and restocking the fridge in preparation for what promises to be a fantastic summer of cricket. Several new teams will be making an appearance at Cleeves Farm and we all look forward to welcoming them and their supporters in due course. As ever, we are on the lookout for new blood and should you know someone (male or female) looking to fill a Sunday afternoon then please point them in the direction of either the club s Chairman Carl Jacobs or Secretary Pete Corbin: Carl on cjacbos@aol.com or or Pete on corbsp@gmail.com CCC Drinks Party Please remember Saturday 14 July for the Chilmark Cricket Club Drinks Party at Cleeves Farm, following the Hong Kong X1 matches that day. Ticket details will be available in the June issue of The Village Voice. 4

5 Chilmark and Fonthill Bishop School Football Fun Pupils took part in a Going for Goals football tournament supported by Southampton FC and held at the Nadder Centre in Tisbury. The team played really well against other teams from local schools and were placed 6th overall. Spike (the final Chapter?) Spike has had another busy month, by hedgehog standards. Quiet, by ours. He settled happily into the Greenhouse, and has been luxuriating in more space, and a variety of things to explore and play with (mostly variations on the flowerpot theme). But eventually it became clear that he was now too big for his own flowerpot, so, using all my skills as a former nuclear submarine engineer, I built him a new, grander house. This consisted of a chipboard box with a hole cut out, with an attached tunnel, made from an old plastic bottle. The whole thing looks rather like a square igloo! Nevertheless, Spike is delighted, and rushed to furnish it in the latest fashion. He still spends much of the day inside, asleep, and trundles out at night to polish off his saucer of catfood. He is now over 900 grams in weight, compared to 220 when Biggles first brought him in in early November. So the day of his departure approaches. Latest info from HH HQ is that the end of April is the right time, so we shall put him out, in his igloo, in a wild bit of the garden, continue to feed him for a bit, and await events. He should be fairly safe so long as no badgers come sauntering by; far from the road, the most dangerous thing, and now too big to be worried by dogs or cats. Plenty of slugs, worms and other creepy-crawlies to eat. We shall worry about him, and hope that he finds a mate, but like any doting parents we must give him his freedom, and hope that he uses it wisely. Goodbye, old Spiky boy, we ve loved having you. Patrick Middleton White Horse Morris White Horse Morris will be back at The Black Dog on Wednesday 16 May, from 8pm, for their annual visit to Chilmark. Do come along to see these excellent Morris Dancers perform - an enjoyable evening guaranteed. You can even take part - essential training provided. Jenny Knight We are very sad to learn of the death of Jenny Knight, of The Old Post Office, Chilmark. A Thanksgiving service in Jenny s memory will be held at St Margaret s, Chilmark, on Thursday 28 June, at 2.30pm. Sponsored Walk The sponsored walk took place on Friday 20 April, having been rearranged from a very wet Thursday before the Easter break. So far 350 has been raised for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. John Wilcox It is with much sadness that we report the death of John Wilcox on Thursday 26 April. He was a wonderful, colourful character who contributed enormously to the village of Chilmark. Our thoughts are very much with his daughter, Alison. A private family committal at Salisbury Crematorium on Wednesday 16 May will be followed by a service of Thanksgiving for John s life in the Church of St Margaret of Antioch, Chilmark, at 12 noon, to which everyone is welcome. Afterwards, refreshments will be served at The Black Dog. 5

6 The Church Fete and the Village Show Over the last thirty years not so long as some in the village I have loved attending and taking part, with other family members, in the Church Fete and the Village Show (until recently the Chilmark Horticultural Show). The two events are marvellous for bringing the village together. We welcome newcomers and visitors and show people what we can do, which changes over the years, but remains valuable. The biggest cup in the Show, for example, was given for lambing, but is now for writing. Fete and Show have much in common - so much, in fact, that some people are puzzled why they are separate at all. After a degree of reflection on the subject, and without any objections in principle, I think some good reasons exist why it is better to have two events, rather than one big combined festival. So here they are: Timing - the Church Fete normally takes place a while before people go on their summer holidays and the Show soon after they get back: nevertheless, it is easy to be away for one or the other, but very unlucky to have to miss both. Produce grown in the village is not ready to be shown until fairly late in the summer, whereas dancing around the Maypole should be soon after the merry month has ended, in other words before the school holidays.these two things are at the heart of the events where they take place. Space - the Old Rectory is uniquely beautiful. It has an historical connection with the Church, and we are lucky that the current owners, Neil and Susie Sutton, generously wish to keep it as the traditional venue for the Fete. There would not be space at the Old Rectory to add, for example, a tug-of-war, dog show or horticultural marquee (which would in any case be in use for another purpose). Even if there were room, a combined event would offer too many activities and attractions for people spending just an afternoon there to become involved in. People in the village - many of us do one thing (or more than one) at the Fete and another at the Show. At a combined event, there would have to be sacrifices. Money - the Church has to pay an annual share to the diocese, a ninth of which, on average, is raised at the Fete more than from any other fund-raising activity. Without income from the Fete the Church would soon be in the red. The Show, on the other hand, does not need to make much money, so can afford its special attractions that would not suit the Fete, such as children s races. There is much else that could be said about Fete and Show. If we shall miss having a Show this year, we should still aim for a good one next year, not least to mark the 400th anniversary of the earliest known Sheep Fair in the village, on St Margaret s Day. Neil Pattenden The Village Voice Wine Tasting! Teffont Village Hall is hosting a wine tasting evening arranged by Majestic Wine on Friday 8 June, 6-8pm. Everyone welcome. There will be a small charge that will be shared between Majestic Wine s nominated charity, The Alzheimer s Society, and the upkeep of Teffont Village Hall. More details soon please keep the date free. 6

7 Focus Point As I write the Commonwealth Games have drawn to a close - after two weeks of wonderful competition and sporting excellence. Perhaps the most memorable events came right at the end - with the triumph of the England netball team over firstly Jamaica in the last 30 seconds and then over Australia in the final second of the match, taking the Gold medal for the first time. What an example of perseverance and determination! But it wasn t just that - the team had shown such sportsmanship and courtesy as well. In the days after the first Easter, Jesus came and stood among his disciples. And his first words to them as they were gathered together were Peace be with you. An extraordinary statement in all ways. Having suffered crucifixion, coming after a time of such hardship and persecution Peace be with you. Peace - the taking away of fear. Peace in all fullness. Peace in your heart, mind body and soul. Recently we had been thinking much about peace. At the beginning of April we heard of chemical attacks on the people of Douma by fellow Syrians. Following this we have seen missile attacks on Syrian chemical sites by France, USA and UK. The situation is crying out for peace; peace that will stop fighting, stop people having to leave their homes, stop the refugee camps being filled. New Lay Canon of Salisbury Cathedral We congratulate Judy Anderson, Licensed Lay Minister in the Nadder Valley Benefice, who has been invited to become a Lay Canon of Salisbury Cathedral for a period of five years. This is in recognition of her contribution to the Diocese of Salisbury, in particular her work as Associate Warden of Licensed Lay Ministers. Judy will be installed, along with three new Non- Residentiary Canons, during a service of Evensong at the Cathedral on Tuesday 8 May at New Team Vicar appointed We are delighted to announce that the Bishop has invited The Reverend Juliette Hulme to be the next Team Vicar based in Tisbury, and that Juliette has accepted the offer. Juliette will bring a depth of experience in Army Chaplaincy, town and rural ministry and her current school chaplaincy at Wells Cathedral School. It is anticipated that the Bishop of Salisbury will license Juliette on Monday 3 September at Saint John the Baptist Church in Tisbury. Please pray for Juliette as she prepares to move and begin her new ministry amongst us. Graham Southgate, Team Rector The first disciples knew that they could do nothing by themselves. Yet those simple fishermen, tax men, wanderers were people like us and as individuals, and in teams, empowered by the Holy Spirit they went out to preach the good news across the whole of the known world. The community in Salisbury has been working hard to restore confidence in the city and to rebuild businesses, showing a real care for those who live there and those who visit. They aren t giving up, they are getting back to normal and the new normal looks as if it is going to be much better than the old, simply because people are working harder to make it so. On May 20th, the church celebrates Pentecost - the coming of the Holy Spirit. It is a time of great joy when we celebrate the power of God, that moves among us, guides and helps us, both to follow him, and to inspire us and lead us on. May we be inspired to be people of peace, those who never cease to work for good in the world. If the netball team can win a gold medal in the last second of a match what will we do? Revd Joanna Naish 7

11 The Village Voice Tisbury Surgery My name is Nicola and I am one of five receptionists who work at Tisbury Surgery, the others being Catherine, Sharon, Karen and Sue. Working as a receptionist is an interesting and challenging job. We are the first point of contact with the patient when they visit or telephone the surgery. We are the buffer between the GP and the patients and therefore have a front line view of what happens, from both sides of the reception desk. Tisbury Surgery is unique in that everyone in reception does a bit of everything. It often amuses us when someone rings up to speak to the medical secretary, the person who deals with prescriptions, that person on the front desk well, we are one and the same! Each of us has an area of speciality though: Catherine deals with the babies checks and immunisations bookings; Sharon is the carers lead; Karen organises the asthma clinics and Sue the distribution of blood pressure machines. My speciality is following up referrals - in particular Two Week Wait referrals - because it is important that these appointments are made and kept. There are many jokes about doctors receptionists, but we try to do the best that we can without being obstructive or insensitive. There are times when we have to ask questions to provide the GPs and Practice Nurses with as much information as possible. We try to answer all queries with compassion, understanding and humour, where appropriate. Answering the telephone is our priority, but we do appreciate how frustrating it can be if the lines are constantly engaged. Thus we ask that patients do not telephone for results until after 11am. Repeat prescription requests cannot be taken over the telephone for safety reasons - and please let us know as soon as possible if you are not able to attend for your surgery appointment, because there is always someone else waiting to use it. Also, do please remember to tell us if you change your mobile telephone number, or move. that many patients no longer want. The income from dispensing is often what keeps your surgery or community pharmacy going and we are proud of the service we offer, often turning repeat prescriptions around in less than the 48 hours statutory time. Our dispensary income pays for the good staffing levels needed to provide a same day service to see a GP. There are a number of internet-based pharmacies who offer a re-order and delivery service, however by using these you may be putting your local practice at risk by taking away its crucial dispensing income. Any request still needs to come via the surgery, and we still need to authorise it and produce a prescription. The process would therefore take longer than if you contact us first and allow us to dispense directly to you. So we would urge you, if possible, to help to keep your local surgery in business by making use of our excellent dispensary facilities. Dr Patrick Craig-McFeely Women Who Lunch The next meeting of the Women Who Lunch group will be held at The Wyndham Arms on Thursday 10 May (arrival from 11.45am for a 12 noon start). The speaker will be Eve Warton who wrote Brave Faces, a book that provides great insight into her life during the turbulent times of the Second World War. Eve intends seeing the film The Finest Hour to reflect on her own memories in comparison and she will have been interviewed by historian Dan Snow shortly before our meeting. I am sure this will enhance her talk. Contact Sue Evans at smebad@btinternet.com on to book, or for further details. At the end of the day, we love chatting to our patients and trying to sort out the best care that we can for you from behind the reception desk. It is a privilege to do this job and, personally, a job that I really enjoy! Nicola Hindon Surgery News - Medicines Management The NHS spends about 8% of its total budget on GP services (that s providing and running the surgeries, paying staff and GPs) and about 14% on the drugs provided on prescription. In Wiltshire we have an excellent medicines management team who give GPs advice and run a process of continuous quality improvement so that we prescribe effectively, safely and cost-effectively. The small practices in this corner of Wiltshire are the most effective in the county, returning savings of almost 500,000 every year that are used to offset losses made elsewhere. Part of our success is due to the help of our patients to use medicines well and reduce waste (or not use medicines at all but addressing lifestyle and self-help). We avoid wasting money and drugs by only prescribing repeat medicines one month at a time, and we don t do automatic re-dispensing as this generates prescriptions 11

14 Wiltshire West Community Policing Team, Tisbury Community Changes of Personnel This month we would like to welcome Sergeant James Williams, who has joined the West Wiltshire Community Policing Team as the Sector Deputy, having taken over from the recently promoted Gill Hughes. James joined Wiltshire Police in 2001, aged 27. He began his career as a Community Beat Officer for the Studley Green area of Trowbridge. Having been promoted, James moved to Chippenham as a response Sergeant, before spending a number of years based in the Melksham Custody Unit, where he was responsible for introducing changes to police bail under the Policing and Crime Act. In October 2017 James moved to the East Wiltshire Community Policing Team, where he covered as Acting Sector Inspector for six months, before joining us here at the end of March. Our congratulations, meanwhile, go to Gill on her promotion to Inspector. We thank her for all her hard work during her time with us.
