1 BETHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH Worship Meaningfully; Witness Intentionally; Grow Spiritually; Serve Purposefully; Care Resolutely; Fellowship Authentically REFORMATION SUNDAY 8:30 & 10:00 a.m. In each service of Holy Communion, the Holy Spirit gathers people around the means of grace the Word of God and the sacraments. The heart of worship is what God does and what God gives. In the presence of all of us together, in baptism, in the word sung and preached and prayed, in the gift of the body and blood of Christ in holy communion, we participate in God s mission in the world. God s Word is like rain and snow falling onto the earth by God s grace to bring life to the parched lands in our Rocky Mountain West; we are called to become the tributaries of Life, making Christ known in our neighborhoods, in our relationships, in our schools, and in our places of work. We are called to a vocation of love and service wherever we are, joining our Many Voices into One Song. Bethany Lutheran Church 4500 East Hampden Avenue Cherry Hills Village, Colorado We are baptized into Christ. And we are Lutheran. As we observe the 498th anniversary of the Reformation, we champion that the Church is always being reformed. Martin Luther never wanted to start a denomination with his namesake. He would, in fact, be shocked, or embarrassed, or both, that a church would bear his name. So this is not Lutheran Pride day. (Continued on page 2) Prelude Gathering Toccata on A Mighty Fortress Rick Seaton Silence is kept. Thanksgiving for Baptism The assembly stands. All may make the sign of the cross, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God s mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. Silence is kept for reflection. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Gathering Hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (vs. 1 & 4) Hymn #504 Greeting Anthem Jubilation Fanfare Sandra Eithun

2 (Continued from page 1) Instead, we recommit ourselves to our partnership with all in the Body of Christ. We give thanks that the church continues to be reformed. And we give thanks for the unity that calls us into relationships with other brothers and sisters in Christ. We share in full communion with the United Methodist Church, Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church-USA, United Church of Christ, Reformed Church in America, and the Moravian Church. Together, we share in combined ministries. Our rostered leaders may serve interchangeably. As people of God we are called to join in the song with all of God s people for the sake sharing God s love and grace in the world. The song is richer when we sing it together! Proceeds help provide excellent childcare during meetings, give financial assistance to moms and secure excellent speakers. Thanks for supporting MOPS! Our worship has four principal parts that have been the framework of worship beginning with the earliest days of the Church. The first part is called the GATHERING. We come together from the homes and places of our daily lives to gather together in community. In the time of GATHERING we sing and pray and settle in for our time together. After the GATHERING is a time for hearing the WORD. When you think of the Word of God, you may first think of the Bible. But for Lutherans, the Word of God is first Jesus Christ Word made flesh. As the Word is read, it dwells in our hearts, and is embodied, in us lives within us. Hymn of Praise Prayer of the Day Eternal light, shine in our hearts. Eternal wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance. Eternal compassion, have mercy on us. Turn us to seek your face, and enable us to reflect your goodness, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 10 3

4 On 51 Sundays of the year, we read our collection of lessons from a series of readings called the Revised Common Lectionary, joining us together with a broad number of our Christian brothers and sisters. The same readings in a three-year cycle are proclaimed throughout the world, in many languages and lands and places. It is ironic, then, that today Reformation Sunday is the one day when we Lutherans are out of sync with the rest of the church. Everyone else is reading about the healing of the blind man, Bartimaeus, from the book of Mark today. Lutherans have our own texts for Reformation Sunday. Perhaps you ve been surprised when you attended a worship service, and a different creed was said. A creed is a statement of belief written by a group people at a particular time addressing a particular concern, offering a concise statement to encourage unity in a time of division. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 5 WORSHIP NOTES Bach s Mighty Fortress : Today, in honor of Reformation Sunday, we will hear four movements from Bach s Cantata #80, Ein feste Burg is unser Gott, which is based on Luther s most famous chorale. Reformation Day was a major event in Bach s time, and this particular cantata is one of Bach s most grand and elaborate. We will hear movements 5 and 8 sung by the choir at offering in English, while movements 2 and 4 will be sung at communion in the original German by soloists. A translation of the words to these two movements is as follows: 4. Arie Komm in mein Herzenshaus, Herr Jesu, mein Verlangen! 4. Aria Come into my heart's house, Lord Jesus, my desire! Drive out the world and Satan and let your image renewed within me shine in splendor! Away, loathsome horror of sin! 2. Aria and Chorale All that is born of God Is destined for victory. By our own power nothing is accomplished We are very soon lost. the right man fights for us Whom God himself has chosen. Those who by the bloodstained banner of Christ have sworn faithfulness in baptism gain victory in the spirit for ever and ever. Do you ask who he is? he is called Jesus Christ, the Lord of Sabaoth, and there is no other god He shall hold the field of battle. All that is born of God is destined to victory. More Bach and Luther: Today s postlude, Wir gläuben all an einen Gott, is another arrangement by Bach of a famous Luther chorale, namely We All Believe in One True God, which you can find in the ELW as hymn number 411. Because the tune is very long, Bach chose to make a fugue out of the first few notes, rather than setting the entire melody. This composition is sometimes referred to as the Giant fugue. Why? Not because of its length or difficulty! See if you can hear, in the low tones of the pedal, the Giant climbing up a flight of stairs and then falling back down again to the bottom. WORSHIP LEADERS In the Sermon and in the Prayers, liturgy connects us with daily life. In the prayers we set the agenda for our lives, reminding us what it means to be the people of God, alive in the world. We pray for the church, those in need, the creation, and the world and its leaders. And through our prayers, we are nudged into action, an action of reconciliation which is enacted in community in our Greeting of Peace. As we greet one another with peace be with you we practice how we will live in the world, finding peace within, and being a peacemaker in all we do. We also practice generosity here that it may carry over when we leave. Our offerings are for the mission of the church as it is carried out in each of the three expressions of the church: in congregations, in synods, and through our churchwide ministries. Prayers of Intercession/Blessing of the Care Packages Response: Lord, in your mercy...hear our prayer. Peace Meal Response: And also with you. Offering Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80 J.S. 6 The third element of our worship together is the MEAL. Jesus said of himself that he is the Bread of Life and when we eat bread together around our communion table, we are, with Jesus, and we are with one another. The proclamation of the Word of God and the celebration of the Lord s Supper are connected. Luther called these the two high points in the service of Holy Communion. Great Thanksgiving Welcome to the Lord s Table Bethany welcomes all baptized Christians who have celebrated their first communion to join in receiving the body and blood of Christ in Holy Communion. An usher will direct you when to come forward for the distribution. You will receive the wafer in your hand which you may then dip in the wine. A communion station with alcohol free wine and gluten free wafers is available at every communion service at the center aisle. You may return by the opposite aisle of your section. Those who would like to come forward but do not wish to commune may ask the server for a blessing. The Distribution Lamb of God In the Word read and proclaimed, God speaks to us. In the meal of Holy Communion, the grace of God s gift for us is proclaimed by the presiding minister, in Jesus own words of command and promise. This clear proclamation in the words of institution may be included in a prayer of thanksgiving, which includes praise to God for creation, for God s faithfulness to the people of ancient Israel, for God s revelation in the saving work of Jesus Christ, remembering the crucified and risen Christ, and praying for the Holy Spirit in this meal. We join as the people of God, of many diverse voices, joining in One Song: that Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again! Preface Sanctus It is indeed right, our duty and our joy......we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Words of Institution...For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the mystery of our faith. Response: Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Having been gathered together in the waters of baptism, having heard the word proclaimed, having shared in the meal, we are sent out into the world, to become the body of Christ made alive! The sending brings our worship full circle. We have been gathered, in all our diversity, and shaped into a community, one body in Christ. From the table of communion where Jesus Christ calls us together, we are sent out, joyfully, into our daily baptismal living. The presiding minister blesses us in the name of God, granting us God s favor and peace. With the blessing of God we go out to live as Christ s body in the world, proclaiming the good news that the kingdom of heaven has come near, living in service to others, caring for all in need, and continuing our participation in God s mission only to be gathered here again next week, around the means of grace, God s Word, and sacraments. Communion Music Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80 J.S. Bach IV. Aria: Komm in mein Herzenshaus II. Aria and Chorale: Alles was vonn Gott geboren Communion Hymn My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less Hymn #596 Blessing Prayer after Communion Ministry Opportunities The assembly stands. Benediction Sending Response: Amen. Response after prayer: Amen. Sending Hymn Sent Forth by God s Blessing Hymn #547 Dismissal Postlude Wir gläuben all an einen Gott, BWV 680 J.S. Bach 6 7
