November 2018 Pack a shoebox! Operation Christmas Child Demonstrating God's love in a tangible way to children in need around the world

NOTES FROM THE PASTOR K E I T H I N M A N By the nature of my calling, I must read a variety of books, listen to podcasts, and in general, always be looking for relevant, positive information by which to feed my soul. I love to read. Unfortunately, I cannot always remember and process the information that goes in! Currently, I am feasting upon the writings of those who have gone before me through the adventure of Exodus. I am grateful for scholarly commentators whose work we have in our church library. Furthermore, there are many authors who have used the life of Moses as an inspiration for leadership. Troy Dobbs, Matt Chandler, J.D. Greear, Chuck Swindoll, Stuart Briscoe, Skip Heitzig, Tony Merida, and others give me encouragement as I study the Word of God. Every week I seek to glean from the Scripture in a very personal way, knowing that it is what my heart experiences that is most transferable to my friends in the pew. I hope you will access through your computer the massive amount of solid Bible teaching that is available to us today. There is so much I am unable to share with you due to time constraints. I hope we will all grow from our time in the book of Exodus. Meanwhile, there are other books from which I seek encouragement. Currently, I am reading the book, The Love Dare. This is a very practical book that gives guidance on strengthening your marriage. I have given a copy to my son and son-in-law and the three of us are seeking to be better husbands. This forty day journey of brief devotionals and instructions are driven by Scripture and working through it is our intentional effort to make this most important relationship better. Guys, pick it up! Ladies, it works for you too! The Ragamuffin Gospel, by Brennan Manning, is a book I recently completed and I am now working through the spiritual retreat index which gives guidance in contemplating 19 mercies via a spiritual retreat. Hear these words that give some description to the book: We continue to see Him as a small-minded book keeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet. Yet, God gave us His grace, willingly, no matter what we ve done. We come to Him as ragamuffins dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His furious love. This is not a typical Baptist read, but I sure did enjoy it! Why am I bringing up this subject of reading? Because when we read, it sets us up to grow. Our souls are nourished. And thus, our relationships are nurtured, with God and one another. There are so many wasted moments in a day, a week, a month, and a year. I certainly experience those moments. I also know the joy of God using great speakers and books to encourage me. I encourage you to find those resources that will nurture your soul. And, of course, God s Word is the foremost! Enjoy the read! -Keith DEACON SELECTION: Deacon Selection will be Sunday, November 11 in both morning worship services. The names of nominees who have agreed to be placed on the ballot will be included in the November 4 Sunday program. Absentee ballots will be available in the church office Monday, November 5 through Thursday, November 8.

NOTES FROM MUSIC MINISTRY M I K E R O S E Happy Fall Y all! We are about to enter the most wonderful (and busiest) time of the year. This is particularly true when it comes to the presentation of music! Our Christmas musical, Come, Messiah King, will be presented by combined choirs of FBC and Memorial Baptist on December 16. We will be doing this great music at 11:00 am in our Sanctuary, and at 6:00 pm at Memorial. Our narrators and soloists will be responsible at the 11:00 am service and Memorial s folks will be responsible for the production at 6:00 pm. This is the first time we have tried this and we look forward to partnering with these super folks as we sing the wonders of Christmas together. It is so good to work with Jackson again, as he is doing a wonderful job with our friends there. We look forward to seeing you at 11:00 am and many of you again at 6:00 pm at Memorial Baptist on that Sunday, December 16. Invite your friends and family to come and join you. If they are busy at 11:00 am, they are welcome to come with you at 6:00 pm on Main Street at Memorial. I am excited about this partnership. Please join us as we celebrate this most wonderful season of the birth of Jesus! I am excited about my THIRD presentation of Christmas music at First Baptist...it doesn t seem possible that this is our third year together! It has been a wonderful time and I thank God daily for putting us together. I do not know what I would have done this past year without you. I thank God that He put us together. Thanks again for your encouragement and all of your kindness! God bless you as you continue to work to further the Cause of Christ here at First Baptist. -Mike Hello M.A.G.I.C. Friends! If you read your most recent M.A.G.I.C. Newsletter, this will sound familiar. However, I felt like it may encourage some of our seniors who aren t involved in our M.A.G.I.C. ministry. Recently I spent a week with my brother, Floyd, in Hot Springs, AR. As you can imagine, everywhere we went people stared at us. We were asked many times, Are y all twins? I guess some people are a little slow. At any rate, I was amazed how the Lord would open doors for us to share our testimony just because we are twins. We were at an RV dealership and the staff was spellbound. When I told them we grew up in Mississippi, the manager asked me if I knew where Sardis Dam was. I told him I not only knew where it was, but was saved there twice. I was able to share with them how someone saved me from drowning and later that summer how someone saved me from hell! The entire staff sat there listening to my story. When was the last time you told YOUR story? It was a reminder to me that God opens doors for us to share the hope that s in us if we will take it. -Boyd

Hello friends! Here are the latest updates on all things Kids1st! Our Kids 1st World Mission Offering is $500 and we are raising money to sponsor 5 goats through Baptist Global Response. If every child brings in at least $10, we will hit our goal! If we hit our goal, goats will come to church on Sunday, December 2! Elementary kids can feed Chewy (see his picture to the right) on the 2nd floor and preschoolers can put their money in the special offering jar on the first floor! Operation Christmas Child is here! This is a great opportunity to teach your children how to reach out to others and to show compassion. Plan to pick up a box and pack it together as a family. Boxes are due November 11 and can be dropped off in the Welcome Center. Don t forget the $9 for shipping! You can also pick up a Family Faith talk packet with info for your shoebox in the Welcome Center. Jingle Jam is coming! Plan to attend and bring your friends to our Christmas Party for the whole family Wednesday, December 5th at 6 pm in the FLC. During Midweek in November, elementary kids will be learning cooperation working together to do more than you can do alone through their theme, Jam Session: Building a Better Beat. Preschoolers will be learning that they can always give thanks to God (Ephesians 5:20), through their theme, the Happy Helpers Club. Join us on November 7 and 14. On Sunday, November 18 our older Preschoolers from Mother s Day Out will be singing in the 11:00 am service and they will have activities and breakfast in the Library at 10:30 am. Families in Ms. Brittney s and Ms. Kathryn s class please join us! It is time to think about Camp! We are going to Crossings July This is open to kids who have completed 2nd grade-5th grade. Our theme is Topsy Turvy and we are learning about Josiah and how, no matter your age, size, or status, God s Word must be what guides everything in life, even if the world thinks that s a little topsy turvy! The cost per child is $310. We also need chaperones, so if you would like to experience this incredible week with your child, talk to me. The deadline to sign up and turn in your $50 deposit is January 31st at noon. Please let me know if you would like to register by ing me at rriquelme@fbcmurray.org and to Rachel

Operation Christmas Child at FBC The holidays are almost upon us, sparking one of the most beloved family traditions: packing a shoe box for Operation Chistmas Child. This special ministry provides gifts to children who live in poverty, along with the greatest news ever told: the gospel of Jesus Christ! This year, our goal is to collect 300 boxes! For a church of our size, this should be an easy task. We encourage you to organize packing parties with your small groups, Sunday school classes, family, and friend groups. We have a display set up in the Welcome Center for you to drop your boxes off. The shipping cost per box is $9 this year. Don t forget to include the shipping money in the box you put together. You can also do this online to track the country your box is shipped to. We look forward to the memories made because of this program this holiday season. To God be the glory! COMING SOON Coming soon to your FBC Library: AR reading section! We are excited to be adding a section to our library that has all the AR books moved to one place. Your AR reader can now go directly to this section and find a book that will help them achieve their AR goals. More information will be coming soon! missions fair Coming November 4 5:00-7:00 pm Family Life Center Come learn more about the organizations we support through WMO and how you can participate. 8 Brazil Mission Trip - On December 27, 2018, a team from FBC will head to the Amazon to continue the tradition of sharing the love of Jesus to those who live on the banks of the river. We truly appreciate the support of our church family in this ministry, and ask for your continued support as we prepare for the December trip. This trip will take the team to the village of Mapuera, another group belonging to the indigenous Wai Wai, but this village is much deeper into the jungle. The team is collecting items for its ministries: construction, medical, vision, VBS, Bible Study, evangelism and women s health and Bible study. We must conserve space on this trip, so we only request small items. There is a box in the welcome center for the collection of items (see list below, items in bold are VERY important), and there will be a box at the Missions Fair on November 4. Thanks for your commitment to Brazil missions. Children s multi-vitamins (no gummies they melt), Tylenol, Ibuprofin, eye drops, Tums, potholders, toothbrushes, toothpaste, small flashlights, Band-Aids, lip balm or chapstick, head bands/hair items, antibiotic ointment, anti-fungal cream, hard candy, balloons, beach balls (deflated), soccer balls (deflated), new or like-new caps, hydrocortisone cream. Soup for the Soul, a local ministry started in 2015, offers a no cost meal to Murray residents each weekday evening from 4:00-6:00 pm. Their mission statement is to serve the hungry of our community by sharing the love of God through the giving of food for the body, kindness for the soul and hope for the future. Soup for the Soul is operated primarily by volunteers. Groups from our church serve monthly at Soup for the Soul preparing and serving meals, talking with guests, bussing tables, and washing up after the meal. Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief teams are some of the first to respond with help to many different types of disasters. We often see pictures of them wearing their distinctive yellow shirts at the sites of tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters.these volunteers can staff feeding units designed to deliver thousands of hot meals on short notice; move in with chainsaws to help remove debris; do the dirty work of mudding out flooded homes; and provide many other disaster relief services. Currently, Kentucky Baptist Disaster teams are also participating in a five-year partnership with Baptist Global Response to use their skills to help with many different disasters in sub-saharan Africa. Whether the disaster occurs in Kentucky or elsewhere in our country or the world, Kentucky volunteers are trained and prepared to be called out to help.
