2 Our deacon body recently approved the search for the position of Pastor/Director of Children and Activities. This is a new position which we believe will help us address our current needs and future needs when the new Family Life Center opens. The primary emphasis of this position will lean to the Children s ministry. During this time, Melissa Collier will continue to serve as Interim in our ministry to children. We are very grateful for her and her willingness to give leadership in this area during our time of transition. Melissa is a great team member here at First Baptist. After a series of conversations and open meetings with those interested in discussing the future needs of our church, the decision was made to have a formal search with an elected search committee. We are trusting and praying that this process will lead us to the person that God has in mind to fill this important position. An information sheet is available in the Welcome Center and the job description is available upon request. The third-floor renovation of the student education building will soon be completed. We have had tremendous volunteer leadership and cooperation which has saved us literally thousands of dollars. As we prepare to transition our student and collegiate ministries to the new building, this new space on the third floor will be available for our adult Bible Studies and a variety of ministry needs. These rooms will be ready to receive classes, some of which will be moving to this side of the street from our Fellowship Hall and The Net building. It is our plan and hope to move into some of these rooms on August 13. Please feel free to walk through the third-floor area. Speaking of the Family Life Center, our anticipated move in date is set for the end of the year. The consistent rains have delayed progress, but with the current stretch of dry weather, the completion of the roof will enable work to be done on a more predictable timeline. First Baptist Church has officially petitioned the City of Murray City Council for permission to close 3rd Street behind our Family Life Center between Maple and Elm Streets. Given the fact that we own the property on both sides of the street, it is our desire to utilize this area more effectively for parking. Hopefully, we will have a favorable decision in the near future. The First Baptist Church Mother s Day Out Ministry enters another chapter this coming August. As many of you know, Jenni Johnson served us so well in this capacity for many years and is now working in her family business. Lauren Dunlap has assumed the leadership responsibility for this vital ministry and we are so grateful God has sent us another gifted and qualified person to fill this important role. Please keep Lauren in your prayers. During the weekend of July 21-23, Carole and I participated in a marriage retreat with my son and his wife. We then immediately boarded a plane for Miami to enjoy a week with my other children and grandsons. Both experiences are so appreciated. I closed my sermon on July 16 with these words: The primary product of this church should be people of influence, leaders, change agents. The Bible calls these people disciples, people who take serious the call of Jesus to follow me. May we strive to be a people to love God, love people, make disciples, and send disciples. Keith

5 Summer is winding down and school will be starting back in just a couple of short weeks. August is such a busy time and there are so many activities and events that it can be difficult to remember them all. I hope you will take some time and look through the different ministry areas and see all the incredible events coming up. Here are a few specific upcoming events to mention: 1. MIDWEEK:: We are so excited about getting our Wednesday night MidWeek program back up and running. This will start with a MidWeek Promo night on Wednesday, August 9th. We will have a free cookout beginning at 5:30 pm and will be promoting all of our MidWeek small group options after we eat. Join us at 5:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall for a great time of fellowship and looking forward to the fall. All of our Midweek classes will begin the following Wednesday, August 16th. You can look on the cover of this Manna and see the four offerings we are making available: A. Secret Church: Survey of the Old Testament (David Platt) - Join David Platt as he walks through the entire Old Testament highlighting major themes, biblical characters, and how the whole Old Testament tells the story of God s love. B. Goliath Must Fall (Louie Giglio) - Fear. Rejection. Addiction. Anger. Comfort...Must Fall. It s likely you have a threatening giant in your life an adversary or stronghold that s diminishing your ability to live a full and free life. Frozen in the grip of rejection, fear, anger, comfort, or addiction, we lose sight of the promise God has for our lives. Demoralized and defeated, we settle for far less than his best. God has a better plan for you, a plan for you to live in victory. That s why he has silenced your giant once and for all. In Goliath Must Fall, pastor Louie Giglio uncovers a newfound twist in the classic story of David and Goliath. The key to living free from our giants is not better slingshot accuracy, but keeping our eyes on the one and only giant-slayer Jesus. Put your hope in him and watch Goliath fall. C. The Case For Christ (Lee Strobel) - Is there credible evidence that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God? Skeptics dismiss the Jesus of the Gospels by claiming there is no evidence in the case for Christ. Lee Strobel disagrees. The former legal journalist and one-time atheist knows how to ask tough questions. His own search for truth about Jesus led him to faith in Christ. Now Strobel invites you and your group to investigate the truth about Jesus Christ leading to the facts that guided Strobel from atheism to faith in Christ. In this revised six-session study, participants will journey along with Strobel on a quest for the truth about Jesus. D. God s At War (Kyle Idleman) - In a new twist to the cinematic style City on a Hill has become known for, this 6 episode series was filmed in a docudrama style narrated by Kyle and featuring the late Chuck Colson (Prison Fellowship), Chuck Bentley (Crown Financial Ministries) and others telling their true stories. In these compelling stories, we will see some reflection of ourselves, and recognize the true battle that lies at the heart of all our sin struggles. These stories also point the way to victory, as we see the kind of life transforming power that Christ is ready to pour out in our lives as well. Each of these studies are a 6 week small group DVD study. All four of these are incredible and I highly encourage you to come join us. These same studies will be repeated the second half of our fall Mid-week. Our regular Wednesday Fellowship Suppers will begin on August 16 at 5:30 pm followed by week 1 of these studies at 6:30 pm. continued on next page...

6 2. MINISTRY FAIR:: Where are you serving this year? Are you looking for a place to plug in and get involved? On Sunday, July 30 and August 6, all church ministries will have booths set up in the Welcome Center promoting their ministries. Please take a few minutes and come by and see the many different ways you can plug in. There will be sign up sheets if you are interested in any areas. We need you!! 3. COLLEGE ADOPTION:: It s that time of year when our college students are coming back. We have the opportunity to impact these students in incredible ways. One way is through our college adoption program. This is simply you adopting a student for the year. This involves being a home away from home. We want our college students to have a local family that will welcome them like one of their own. Whether it s a lunch every now and then or opening your home for a place to study, please consider adopting a student. If you need more information, see Jeremy Hudgin or Erin Clark. 4. PROMOTION SUNDAY:: On Sunday, August 13, all age graded Sunday School classes will promote up. This is an exciting time in the lives of our students. This is also a time to find a class and get involved. If you are not currently connected with a small group, we have a class for just about anyone. This is such an exciting time here at FBC. Let s continue to pray that God would accomplish in us what He desires. I m so grateful to each of you. Jeremy Business Meeting Minutes Sunday, July 23, 2017 Church Administrator s Report Jeremy Hudgin The renovation of the 3rd floor should be completed in time for Promotion Sunday, August 13. 9 Dear Church Famiy, Summer is just about done! Thank the Lord we have survived the heat and the dog days which went with it! With the beginning of August comes rehearsal season for our annual Christmas musical. This year we are going to be singing, Light! Out of the Darkness. I know it is early to begin thinking about Christmas, but we need to begin meeting early and often to assure our very best effort in the performance of this great musical. We will begin these rehearsals in three or four weeks. We encourage you to come and sing with us. Last year we had several folks who came and rehearsed with us and sang for this one event. I encourage such participation! We would love to have the choir loft full for this musical. We have had several folks who have indicated to me that they will be joining us this season. We will work hard and fast to make this a Christmas season to remember at First Baptist. Come and sing with us! You will notice that we have a new organ in our sanctuary! We replaced the 50 plus year old Allen with a slightly preloved Rodgers organ. This new digital instrument will allow the incorporation of literally thousands of Midi sounds when we add a sound module. This instrument indeed brings the music ministry of First Baptist Church into the 21st century! The gentleman who brokered the instrument and installed it into our sanctuary stated that we would be using it for the next 40 to 50 years. As it was being demonstrated last Monday afternoon, I felt the floor of the sanctuary tremble and chills went up my spine as I felt the power of this great instrument. I want to thank Pastor Keith, the church trustees, the BFS committee, the deacons, and those present at the latest business meeting for their support and for sharing the vision I had for First Baptist Church with regard to this instrument. I hope you will join me in thanking God for His leadership in this direction! We will soon be having a dedication concert and a training session for all those who wish to be involved in playing this organ for God s Glory at First Baptist Church. I continue to be thrilled to be serving you and our Lord here at First Baptist. We have so many dedicated and talented folks who serve with me. Those around me indeed make the music ministry shine at FBC! Come and join us we would love to have you! Blessings! 11 First Baptist Church is getting a new addition! What was once a parking lot for churchgoers is well on its way to becoming a hotspot for college students like me. For years now, the college hangout at FBC Murray was across the street from the church in a tiny little building called The Net. Don t get me wrong, The Net was great, but this new hub is going to be so much better. A place for fellowship unlike anything FBC has seen, The Family Life Center will attract students from Murray State who may have overlooked the church in the past. With amenities such as a gym, cafeteria, and classrooms, there will be space readily available for plenty of worshiping and fellowship opportunities. Group meals after sporting events, group Bible studies, and basketball tournaments with a side of Jesus are all possibilities with this new addition. The Family Life Center will give FBC members and college students alike a new place to grow spiritually, even on a basketball court. Jordyn Rowland Building an authentic, biblical community who engages our city and our world with the love of Jesus.
