1 The Lord is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Happy Easter! A while back I was sitting in the waiting room for my physical therapist, leafing through a well-worn travel magazine, and letting my mind wander. I flipped through pictures of faraway places and descriptions of extreme sports and more sedate activities. Then like a car that had missed its turn, I stopped, went back a few pages, and again read a quote that I had just glanced through the first time. I read it again, and I began to think about our Sherman United Methodist Church and, in this time of change, where we have been and where we are going as the people of God in this place and time. The traveler doesn t know where they are going and the tourist doesn t know where they are. Henry Rollins I began to wonder, are we traveling with Jesus across the path of life and that abundant, or are we simply tourists standing and gawking at the faith lived out by others? Certainly there are times when I ve moved back and forth between each of these descriptions. But, are we travelers or tourists? Is the Sherman United Methodist Church going to continue not just to be a family of faith, but Christ s Church that shares, (not gives or provides or bequeaths) reaches out, and connects on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level with all people as we invite them to experience for themselves the love of Jesus? Because I really believe that, while we have in the past with the Spirit s guidance, negotiated the paths that delivered us to this place and time, we continue to stand at an important crossroad. That point where the road of focusing on ourselves, our concerns, and our perceived difficulties crosses the path of focusing on others and their needs and lives. I believe this church is at the cross-road. Will we continue to carry the cross into the world, or will we plant it in this place and expect others to come to us? Are we traveling with Jesus or have we become tourists content to view but never experience the faith that moves mountains? God s vision and purpose calls us to step out in faith with Jesus on the path of love and life and hope. Take the chance of faith and be the Sherman United Methodist Church. The following is a letter of introduction from Pastor Jon Carrell. My name is Jon Carrell.

Stephanie and I have been married since 1999. We went to China in December 2005, and we adopted Marissa when she was about 10 months old.

I grew up in Danville, Illinois, and Stephanie is from Oblong, Illinois. I attended Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois, and I got a degree in accounting there.

2 As you may already know, Pastor Craig will be moving to another church, and we will be getting a new pastor this summer. The Staff Parish Relations Committee would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you our new pastor and his family. His first service will be on Sunday, July 1. The following is a letter of introduction from Pastor Jon Carrell. My name is Jon Carrell. My wife is Stephanie, and we have a 13 year old daughter named Marissa, who is in 7 th grade and a 13 year old daughter named Trisha, who is in 6 th grade. Stephanie and I have been married since We went to China in December 2005, and we adopted Marissa when she was about 10 months old. Last summer, we went back to China again to adopt Trisha, so she is still adjusting to our family, American culture, and the English language. We currently live in Belleville, Illinois. I grew up in Danville, Illinois, and Stephanie is from Oblong, Illinois. I attended Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois, and I got a degree in accounting there. Stephanie attended college at Lincoln Trail and Eastern Illinois, and she has a degree in education and has taught many years. She is currently working as a teacher s aide in Fairview Heights. I have worked different jobs in accounting in the past. Although I have experience in accounting, most of my years since college have been spent in ministry. I felt the Lord was calling me to ministry around a year after I finished college, so I attended Asbury Theological Seminary. I have been the senior pastor of three Free Methodist churches in Illinois and Indiana since seminary, and I have twelve years of pastoral experience in the Free Methodist Church, in which I was previously an ordained elder. In case you are wondering, the Free Methodist Church is from the Wesleyan/Holiness tradition, so my theological perspective comes from that tradition. During the past seven years I have pastored in the United Methodist Church, serving as senior pastor at the Crossville/McHenry Charge in Southeastern Illinois for four years and the last three years as associate pastor at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Belleville. In 2016, I completed the process of switching my credentials from the Free Methodist Church and became an elder in the United Methodist Church. Coming to the United Methodist Church is a little new to me, but not too much. Stephanie grew up in the United Methodist Church, and my grandfather was a pastor for several years in the United Methodist Church in Illinois. My spiritual gifts are preaching, teaching, pastoral care, and administration. My interests include basketball, football, baseball, softball, and crossword puzzles. Stephanie and I are Cubs fans; however, Marissa is a Cardinals fan. Trisha is still probably not quite sure what to make of baseball but would probably root for the Cardinals. Stephanie s interests are tennis, ping-pong, and music. Marissa likes to play softball and the piano. Trisha likes singing. Preschool is under going some pretty amazing changes as well, and that is exciting! We will be offering a new program structure for our families! Our 3 year olds will meet for Preschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8:30-11:00am. Tuition is $90/month. Our 4/5 year olds will meet for Kindergarten-Readiness on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 8:30-11:00. Kim Compton, Preschool Director Kids Place News At Kid s Place we just wrapped up our Bible Science Unit where we used science experiments to teach the children that God created the heavens and earth and everything in it. All of the kids got to do fun experiments like make lava lamps, potato timers, magnetic slime, exploding lunch bags, and a balancing act using hex nuts. We used these lessons to build up to our half day on March 23. The kids had fun learning about Jesus death and resurrection while doing science experiments. We are very excited about our next unit, which is Bible Art. The teachers at Kid s Place will be using art projects to reinforce the beauty and the greatness of God. The kids at Kid s Place will get to do a different art project each week, and we will be keeping those art projects for our Art Show and Ice Cream social on Thursday, May 17 6:00-7:00 pm. Please join us that evening and enjoy the Kid s Place art gallery and some ice cream! Kid s Place registration is fast approaching and will take place the week of April 23 rd starting with our current families. We will call our waitlisted families with any available spots. With the upcoming spring chicken dinner soon upon us, I thought I d explain the disbursement process of those funds by Missions Committee.

We develop a giving plan for missions each year, and since we receive more request for help than we can handle, priorities have to be set.

Volunteers, both men and women, are needed to pack kits, sort items, help with mailings, build desks, and repair bicycles and sewing machines. After each chicken dinner we determine the actual contribution using the financial plan form shown below which has the listing of the local missions we support. We develop a giving plan for missions each year, and since we receive more request for help than we can handle, priorities have to be set. Two missions, Liberian UMC, which is $240 a year, and Convent Missionaries Mark and Rebecca Smallwood, which is $2000 ($1000 from each dinner, spring and fall) a year for three years, are made first due to those being committed pledges. For the other contributions we project possible giving based on past fundraising proceeds and identified needs of each mission. The plan is then brought to the Church Council for approval.

The total disbursement amount is rounded off to an even amount to make it easier to work with, and the excess is kept in the missions fund in case of unexpected expenses.

This will be our last meeting until August or September.
