1 Third Baptist Church 410 West McKnight Drive Murfreesboro, TN (615) FEBRUARY 2014 EDITION Yeah, it s Super. But it s also known as ADAY OF MOSTS By now, we ve pretty much heard every super angle possible to play off the title of the biggest mega-sports day of the year. Virtually every retailer airs commercials promoting Super Deals, restaurants with Super Menus and automobile manufacturers boasting of Super Savings. High Attendance Day Sunday Morning, February 2, 2014 Super Bowl Home Fellowships Sunday Evening (See Host Home locations listed on page 4 of this newsletter) Sure, it s Super Bowl Sunday, but if there is one word (other than super ) that defines this special day, it would be the word most. You probably already know that the Super Bowl is the most watched television broadcast of virtually every single year. Coupled with that, the advertising rates during the game are the most expensive commercials of the year. Here are a couple mosts you might not know. Other than Thanksgiving, the United States Grocery Industry advises Super Bowl Sunday has the most food consumed per household than any other day of the year (which you could then deduce, people gain the most weight on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day!) It is also the day most selected by companies to introduce or roll out new products or services a concept first created by a fairly new company called Apple Inc., when they selected the Super Bowl to introduce their new little idea called the Macintosh computer back in So what can we learn from all those mosts? Super Sunday is one of the most opportunistic days to invite a friend or loved one to church with you! Especially when it s 3BC s High Attendance Day the Sunday we try to get the most people possible to come worship and fellowship with us. Make a special effort this year to invite the most people you can to experience this special day together with your church family, as we celebrate, praise and serve the Most High God! 2 A Message From Marty Dear 3BC Family, In July of each year, NFL teams convene for practice for the upcoming season. All 32 teams begin their year with the same goal. Every team is striving to reach and win the Super Bowl (I m not sure I can say Super Bowl without legal ramifications from the NFL but I m going to chance it.) The Super Bowl (oops I said it again) is Sunday February 2, 2014, in New York City. Fans will converge on New York to watch the game, party, and hopefully celebrate their team s victory in this historic and iconic competition. On the same day here at 3BC, we will do many of the same things as we celebrate a Super Sunday. While all Sundays are super, this one will have extra elements from our normal routine. Just like the Super Bowl in New York, we will converge, party, and celebrate. There will also be a historic and iconic competition between teams of LIFE Group classes. Each LIFE Group has been placed on a team led by a 3BC staff member or coach. The Yellow Team will be coached by Duane Geib, The Blue Team will be coached by Adam Lickey, The Green Team will be coached by Karen Jones, The Orange Team will be coached by Steve Hutson, and the Red Team will be coached by defending Super Sunday Champion Marty Blakely. The overall goals are to have 625 for worship and 600 in LIFE Groups on Super Sunday. The team completion will be decided by how many people each team has in LIFE Group with bonus points being awarded for guests present in each class. The Team with the most points will be crowned Super Sunday Champions of the World, ok maybe not of the world but definitely for 3BC. After all this competition on Sunday morning, we will then have a time to celebrate with Super Bowl Home Fellowships hosted by LIFE Group HIGH ATTENDANCE classes. The Fellowships will begin at 5:00 p.m. and childcare for ages birth through 5th grade begins at the church at 4:30 p.m. and ends at 9:00 p.m. Host homes are listed on page 4 of this newsletter, as well as in the Worship Guide and on our website at I hope to see you on Super Sunday February 2, as we Converge, Compete, Fellowship, and most importantly Celebrate our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 3 Portico Baby Bottle Campaign 3BC Women s Ministry is proud to enter its eighth year sponsoring a fundraising campaign for Portico (previously known as the Pregnancy Support Center) of Murfreesboro through the use of individual baby bottles. By participating in a month of change, you will be assisting Portico in providing much needed services to thousands of people in Rutherford County. Simply pick up a baby bottle at the Women s Ministry table located in the Upper Lobby and collect change in it, returning the donations to the Women s Ministry table any Sunday in February. That tiny bottle full of change will grow into a huge blessing in the lives of so many precious little ones in our community! Individuals who contribute with a personal check will receive a receipt from Portico. Contributions are tax-deductible. All bottles are due by Sunday, February 23. The Women s Ministry thanks you in advance for your support of this important organization in our community. Lord s Supper Scheduled For February 23 Our church family will observe the next Lord s Supper on Sunday, February 23. May we never become complacent in observing this special time of worship and remembrance of Christ shedding His blood and giving His body so we might have eternal life. Please make every effort to be in attendance. Join Us In Welcoming Our New 3BC Members!...and every day the Lord added to them those who were being saved. 5 Our Vision Third Baptist Church will produce MATURE disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ who advance God s Kingdom, by His power, for His glory! Our Goal The goal of Third Baptist Church is to worship, glorify, and delight in God as we present to Christ MATURE disciples who: Manage God s Resources Adopt Spiritual Disciplines Treasure Scriptural Truth Understand A Biblical Worldview Reach Out To Those In Need Evangelize The Lost Let Us Know For an emergency regarding death, serious illness, or accident, please call the church office and follow the recorded directions ( ). Visit Our Website At 3BC Church Staff To contact a staff member by , address correspondence by typing the staff member s first name, followed Mike Lee Senior Pastor Marty Blakely Senior Associate Pastor, Education Steve Hutson Associate Pastor, Senior Adults & Young Adults Duane Geib Associate Pastor, College, Evangelism & Missions Mark Moore Associate Pastor, Worship Karen Jones Minister to Preschool & Children Adam Lickey Associate Pastor, Students Jorge Arenivas Pastor, Hispanic Church Senior Adult Valentine Luncheon, February 13 3BC Senior Adults will enjoy a delightful Valentine s Luncheon on Thursday, February 13, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Wyatt Beard will perform everyone s favorite southern gospel music during this wonderful time of fellowship. You may purchase tickets at the information center for only $10 per person. Ticket purchase deadline is Sunday, February 9. Seniors Enjoy Cumberland Playhouse Tuesday, February 25 It s another great day trip for 3BC Senior Adults to the Cumberland County Playhouse on Tuesday, February 25. This month s play is The Dixie Swim Club, a story of five unforgettable women s hilarious and touching tale about their friendships that last forever. As their lives unfold and the years pass, the women increasingly rely on one another, through advice and raucous repartee, to get through the challenges that life flings at them. Plan on leaving the church at 8:15 a.m. to see this hilarious performance and returning by 5:00 p.m. The cost is $30 per person plus lunch, which covers the cost of admission and transportation. ETC Lunch & Learn Sunday, February 9 Our Extended Teaching Care ministry is one of our most important ministries when it comes to reaching new families. For any new family visiting 3BC, our ETC workers will be some of the first people they meet. Parents of babies, toddlers, and preschoolers tend to be apprehensive about leaving their child in someone else s care. That is why it is imperative that our ETC ministry be characterized by excellence. Since those who serve in ETC typically only serve 4 8 times per year, it is difficult to communicate expectations and procedures. For that reason, we are planning an Extended Teaching Care Lunch and Learn on Sunday, February 9 from 12:00 until 1:30 p.m. All those who serve on our ETC Rotation, or those wishing to get involved, and their families are invited to attend this luncheon where we will provide training. Lunch and childcare will be provided. Please make reservations in LIFE Group, at the information center, or call the church office. The Great Mystery of the Teal Ribbons Wondering why so many people are wearing teal ribbons on Sunday mornings? Are people preparing for St. Patrick s Day a little early, and ordered the wrong color ribbons? Could they be part of a new 3BC club? Do they get special parking privileges? The suspense is growing as the numbers of teal ribbons continue to expand. Everybody loves to solve a mystery, and there s only one way to find the answer to this ongoing church curiosity by coming to worship on Sunday morning, February 2. CentriKid Deposits Due Sunday, February 2 Just a final reminder that deposits of $ for students to attend CentriKid Camp 2014 are due Sunday, February 2. Be sure to get your registration in to assure your children can attend this amazing summer camp experience. See Karen Jones for more information. 6 Warm your hearts and souls with wisdom from God s Word. Winter 2014 Discovery U Classes Registration Is Available At The MATURE Table Classes Begin Sunday, February 9, 5:00-6:30 p.m. w Go Tell It on the Mountain Making Jesus Famous in the Boro (Mike Lee) This DU class will focus on the passion for evangelism, the goal of evangelism, the privilege of evangelism and the how of evangelism. The class will help us know how to share the gospel as well as seize Spirit-given opportunities to tell others the good news about Jesus Christ. Whether you ve had much evangelism training, or no training, this class is for you. w Heroes of the Faith: C.S. Lewis & Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Mark Moore & Doug Demosi) C.S. Lewis and Dietrich Bonhoeffer are two men who dramatically impacted the world in the mid-20th century, and that impact still is in effect today. We will take four weeks to look at each man to examine his life, theology, works, and influence on the world then and now. w The Fast Track (Adam Lickey) The Fast Track is an 8-session discipleship experience for students that introduces the big picture of the bible s message. In these weeks teenagers will engage Genesis to Revelation and understand the beauty of the grand narrative of scripture. Through our group sessions, individual study, applicable Scripture, and a guided discussion a love for God s Word will take deep root. Join us as we step back and see God s plan unfold as we journey through The Fast Track. Cost: $10 w A God-Centered Worldview (Trevin Wax) In this class, we will examine the foundations of a biblical worldview, and then tackle some of the big questions of life as well as the big debates in society. Cost: $10 w It s Not Too Late: How God Uses Less Than Perfect People (Steve Hutson) If you've ever wondered, Is it too late for God to do something with me? this study is for you. God frequently uses broken people to accomplish His purposes on earth. A broken person who has learned dependence on God is a force to be reckoned with. This study looks at three men and three women of the Bible who were used mightily by God despite their previous mistakes. You too can learn to focus on the potential of your future, not the missteps of your past. Cost $10 w Just a Little Talk with Jesus (Duane Geib) Join us as we desire to enhance our prayer life as we study the prayer life of Jesus, His model prayer, the prayers of Paul and miscellaneous truths found in the scriptures about prayer. Our time will be spent learning about prayer and praying. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 HCSB page 6
