2 Historic St. Mary s Church, Lancaster, PA October 14, 2018 Dear parishioners and friends, The October calendar tells us it s the Month of the Rosary, Pro Life Month and Pastor Apprecia on Month. What should we do to observe these special occasions? Try saying the rosary every day; a good me might be on the way to and from work or school. Pray for those whose lives are fragile or in danger of being terminated. Show some gesture of apprecia on to Father Leo. Look in Sunday s paper for a note of love from the parish. Today s Gospel teaches us much more than meets the eye. When the young man asked Jesus what he must do to be saved, Jesus answered him by referring to the last seven commandments and not the three referring to God. His message was that you first must find a li le bit of heaven on earth by loving your neighbor before you can expect the glory of the kingdom of heaven. So, why was the young man obeying the commandments in the first place? Was it really out of devo on or was it just to look good? Do we faithfully obey the commandments out of love or is it just out of habit? Then Jesus warns His listeners about how hard it is for those who have riches to get to heaven. He explains that it is easier for a camel to get though the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get to heaven. Do you remember the story of King Midas in Greek mythology? In his greed for possessing gold, Midas wished for everything that he touched to be turned to gold. When he got his wish his beloved daughter, Marigold, was turned into a statue; he starved to death because all food and water that he touched turned to gold. (In the child s fairy tale he is given a second chance. He pleads with the fairy who gave him his wish and his daughter comes back to life; the food becomes edible by sprinkling water on it.) When we focus on riches we starve spiritually because there is no me for prayer, Mass or spiritual reading. Our family and friends become mere objects because we don t have the me to listen to them, nurture and care for them. So, what must we do to be saved? Catechism Ques on of the Week: God chose women who were considered powerless and weak to show His faithfulness. In addi on to Mary, who stands out among the poor and humble of the Lord? (CCC 489) With family, friends and those you meet, please discuss the following Ques on of the Week: In your leadership role how do you follow the words of Jesus to be the slave of all?
