August 2018 Rt. Rev. Bernard Nowicki, DD Pastor Rev. Janusz A. Lucarz - Assistant Pastor Hey everyone, it s August, and them what s gotta get more lernin to know howta spell an rite stuff better n the way it s comin out right cheer is all goin back to school soone! In Pittsburgh we say, We ll miss y uns, but cha gotta go no matter! But we ll have a chance to see each other on Sundays for church classes because we re revitalizing the Cathedral School of Christian Living (SOCL). The first wave of postcards went out to let the parents and caregivers of our children and young people know the reopening is happening. The second and third waves of mailing are ready to go, too. We plan the enrollment in our Cathedral SOCL to range from age 1 month (with the special three-year Splash! program) through childhood and adolescence, and on through young and advanced adulthood. Also, our plans for special needs children and for toddlers are developing nicely; and enrollment will be open to everyone from within the Cathedral parish and from the community outside it. In other words, our enrollment will range from cradle to grave, or, somewhat more poetically, from womb to tomb! The SOCL is an essential ministry to all our people, a ministry which needs a few more volunteers to contact Luann Kaszuba and Barb Nowicki ( ) to help in leading the various levels of Sunday school class. This will include team teaching and the help of assistants for teaching flexibility. The SOCL is an essential ministry to provide for the growing need for spiritual guidance in these times. No one can dispute the fact that our American culture is saturated with change that, along with many favorable things, offers many unsavory influences and forces as well. One of the most stable aspects in the religious sphere has always been our SOCL, the weekend educational efforts we need to offer to people outside of Mass. Unquestionably now, more than ever before, our youngsters, adolescents and especially the adults need a counterweight to the massive cultural shifts that our society is experiencing. So, respond positively to our invitations to join an SOCL class this fall. Respond positively to the postcards you may be receiving as a parent or caregiver. Invite friends and relatives from outside the Cathedral parish to participate with you in Sunday school. Some people have experienced their greatest revelations concerning God s love and his plan for them sweetly and quietly in Sunday church class. Some people may only remember some of the songs and some of the lessons, but they never forget all of the love they experienced in Sunday school. We ll start simply but very enthusiastically. And always remember, your School of Christian Living classes will be like the plant nurseries you visit in garden centers; they may look unimpressive at first, but under the soil, miracles are happening! Bishop Bernard

page 2 Welcome to Camp The 2018 Kurs Encampment took place from June 30-July 7 at the Bishop Hodur Retreat and Recreation Center in Waymart, PA. This year 69 campers attended Kurs, which was an increase of about 20 campers from the year before. A good amount of the campers were members of our cathedral parish. This year s theme came from 2 Timothy 4:7-8, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Prime Bishop Anthony and Bishop Bernard came up during the week to lecture the campers on the meaning of this year s theme. The campers also played a lot of Olympic themed games and challenges to go along with the theme. After being a Kurs camper for many years, this year I had the privilege of being a counselor for the first time. I can truly say that being a staff member was one of the most fun experiences I have ever had. It s a lot of hard work, but hard work pays off in the end. I am already looking forward to next year, and I encourage all of the youth from our parish to come to Kurs. It has been one of the best parts of my summer for many years. I guarantee it will be one of the best parts of yours. submitted by Kevin McConlogue

page 3 And the Winners Are! The Cathedral UYA sponsored a raffle for the past months after Mass in the parish hall. The proceeds from the raffle was used for the expenses of Convo There were 6 baskets that contained assorted gift certificates and gifts cards to various restaurants and services. They were compiled by Elizabeth Pfohl. The drawing was held on Sunday, June 24 th after the short parish meeting. And the winners were;marie Gorgol, June Sarnowski, Florence Sadauskas, Mrs. Francces Loss, Lucas Stankowski, and Mark Matylewicz. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who supported the Youth Group. SOCL 2.0 The SOCL is undergoing some renovations. We are extending the classes beyond the confirmation years. Post cards have gone out to those families with children that we know of. If your family did not receive a post card and you are interested, please contact us at office@saintstanislauspncc.org. We will also be in need of teachers, helpers and fill in assistants. Let us know if you can be helpful. An adult class is being planned and we hope to see many of our parishioners.

page 4 Picnic at the Park The second Sunday in July has been the traditional day for Mass at the Grotto of Christ Benign and the picnic to follow. This year was no exception. Holy Mass began at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Bishop Nowicki and assisted by Fr. Lucarz. The Cathedral Chorale, directed and accompanied by Dr. Peter Picerno, enhanced the mass with song. Following Mass, everyone was treated to a lunch which included hot dogs, pork sliders, potato salad, coleslaw, and pierogi which was catered by POSH. For dessert, an Ice Cream Truck arrived and you had your choice of an ice cream treat. It was a relaxing day for friends and fellowship as a reward for all the hard work everyone does throughout the year for the parish. Thanks to everyone who planned and organized the event so St. Stanislaus parishioners could enjoy a day of faith, family, friends and fun.

page 5 The Fleas Are Coming!!! Preparations for the Annual Flea Market being held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 24th, 25th, & 26th have begun in earnest. New things are coming in every day that must be sorted, cleaned, priced and put on the appropriate tables. If you are able to lend a few hours to help in the preparation of the items for sale or the food to be served, please contact Bernie Kalteski, or the parish office, or office@saintstanislauspncc.org. Or you can just drop by the Youth Center Monday thru Friday from 9 to 3. Someone is there every day. You can also bring your flea market items that you may want to donate, to the Youth Center or contact the above for large item pick up. Workers will also be needed the days of the sale. Come join a great bunch of people for some work and some fun!!

page 6 Convo at the Cathedral On Wednesday, July 25 th, the young people from Convo 2018 visited St. Stanislaus Cathedral. It started with their official group picture on the steps in front of the Cathedral. It took some time and patience to get such a large group in place and looking the same way, but Diane Cimino really worked her magic as can be seen in the group picture. After that every one made their way up the stairs into the Cathedral church where Prime Bishop Anthony talked to the participants and guests about the history of St. Stanislaus and Prime Bishop Hodur. Prime Bishop showed everyone the oldest object in the Cathedral which is the monstrance, pointing out that the shape of the altar was built in the same design of the monstrance. He also spoke about the stained glass windows, some of which are unusual for a church, such as Abraham Lincoln and Adam Mickiewicz. At the end of Prime Bishop s talk, a booklet about all the different windows, which was complied through our parish, was given to each participant. (Continued on page 7)

page 7 Mass then began at 11:00 a.m. with the Convo participants from St. Stanislaus contributing to the celebration. The prelude to Mass began with the St. Stanislaus Bell Choir resounding with the hymn Shine, Jesus, Shine. Ryan Notari was the cantor for the Responsorial Psalm and Maddie Hughes read the prayers of the Faithful. For the Offertory, the Cathedral Young Choir sang This is the Day beautifully. Olivia Pfohl sang Bless the Lord accompanied by her sister, Elizabeth on guitar for the communion hymn. Both girls did a magnificent job. Kaitlyn Gingerlowski on violin with Mary Stankowski and Lu Ann Kaszuba playing hand bells accompanied the organ for the singing of the Post Communion hymn Hallowed be Forever. It was wonderful to hear a traditional PNCC hymn sung so beautifully with the added touch of Kaitlyn s violin and selected hand bells. The St. Stanislaus Bell Choir ended the Mass with a Postlude of Here Comes the Sun. By the end of the service you could feel that all the participants were inspired by The Son. Because there is too much to cover at one time, more about Convo 2018 will follow in the next newsletter. Enjoy the pictures from this day.
