Dear Children, Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (1 John 3:18) The words of John have never been so relevant as in these present days. The devastation around the world takes our breath away, breaks our hearts and brings tears to our eyes. If only we could do something to help we say. We have been praying the 10:02 ( Luke 10:2) prayer together as a District for almost two years. We continue to pray the Lord of the Harvest to raise up Church planters and workers in the field. However, it seems that God is stretching us again to pray not only for these things but for workers to be raised up who will get outside their comfort zone and make a difference in the lives of those who are broken and hurting. As a District we are mobilizing for action. We have purchased a trailer that will be Nazarene Disaster Response ready. There are so many ways that you can help. Through the efforts of our District NDR, David Smith as well as our NMI President, Teresa Hodge, your Pastor will receive mailings informing the local churches of how they can be involved. I encourage you to visit the NDR and Compassionate Ministries site: There you will find ways you can help. Following is a link to a Video from our USA & Canada Regional Director, Dr. Bob Broadbooks. As you watch the video, prayerfully ask God how you can make a difference. Click Here for a Video on how you can help. We have been praying that the Lord of the Harvest would send you forth! Loving in action and truth, Bro. Ron ET Nazarene Disaster Response Our team is scheduled to leave from Lenoir City First Church Sunday afternoon at 3pm on October 29. We will be returning Nov 6th part way, staying in a hotel and arriving back in Lenoir City November 7th. We will be driving part way and staying in a hotel. We will be serving in the Orange or Houston areas, rebuilding the churches or homes or community buildings. We will stay in one of the Nazarene churches while we work. One must be prepared to sleep on blow up mattresses or cots that you will bring with you. Transportation to Lenoir City and possibly to TX will be the responsibility of each individual. Mass transit arrangements, (church vans) are still in progress. Project money for supplies, gas, food, lodging, & insurance are $400 per person. This can be brought with you when you come. Bring your own hand tools that you would want to use, such as battery operated drills, chargers, bits, Utility knives, hammers, screw divers, wire cutters, tool belt, ect. If you are interested please send your name, cell phone number, and address to Pastor David D. Smith at pastrdds@live.com. You may also call Lenoir City First church with this information at (865) If there is no answer please leave the information on the answering service and we will get back to you. Please note that the number one and number two qualities you need for this disaster response trip is FLEXIBILITY (because disasters constantly change) and a servant heart. We do on the job training and disaster training, so don't let inexperience hold you back. Due to process time for paperwork for insurance and logistical planning, the deadline for joining this team is October 10th. Thanks for your compassion, Pastor David D. Smith ET Dist. Disaster Response Coordinator
The New Testament honors vocational ministry as one of God s highest callings. First Thessalonians 5:13-14 asks church members to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Ephesians 4:11-12 says God gave the Church pastors and other ministry leaders to prepare God s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. Pastors are God s gifts to His people and are worthy of recognition for their willing and faithful service. Pastor Appreciation Month is an opportunity for local congregations to give thanks to God for their pastors. It is a time to demonstrate to their pastor s genuine appreciation for their service. It is a time to esteem the role of the vocational Christian ministers who provide churches with spiritual direction. It is a time to stress the need for others to answer God s call to full-time ministry. When the Apostle Paul remembered with joy the people in the church at Philippi, he spoke of their partnership in the gospel (Philippians 1:5). Ministry is a partnership of ministers and lay people each helping the other to be effective in witness and work for Christ. The church cannot function effectively unless both do their part to build up each other. When churches honor their pastor, they strengthen the team God has put together to serve Him in their com-munity. By showing appreciation they return some of the love, concern and ministry their pastor has given to them. (taken from Pastor Appreciation Sunday, A local Church planning Guide October is typically designated as Clergy/Pastor Appreciation Month. Every Church Board Secretary should receive communications from both General Church as well as District Leaders. There are resources and suggestions for planning and implementing special services and ways to show your love at both and Check with your Church Board Secretary to see how you can help make this a special month for you Ministry Leaders. Feel free to call our district office ( ) if you have any questions or need more suggestions.

Our 16th annual Pastors Prayer Retreat is set for January 15&16 at St. Mary s Retreat Center in Sewanee. All pastors and staff including retirees are urged to attend this special event. Registration forms will be sent to all churches and must be sent in by December 1. Scholarships are available. If you have any questions, please contact Richard Reed at the District Office: or rpreed35@bellsouth.net A current hoax is targeting Nazarene churches and districts by spoofing names and addresses of Nazarene leaders to ask for money via wire transfers. Example: A person will send an that states they are a Nazarene leader or an official organization within the denomination. It will appear on the surface that the message is indeed being sent by that person/ organization. They will say they re in a meeting or busy at the moment, but they need you to send a payment today and to reply so they can send you the details of how to send the money. DO NOT REPLY. Giving from churches and districts is done securely through the Funding the Mission website or directly to the General Treasurer s Office. There is never a need to wire money, and individual requests aren t made over through informal channels. If you suspect someone s name is being spoofed in an , ignore the sender s name and view their address. If it looks fishy, it likely is. Mark it as spam within your client. "Let others know about the scam so they can identify it as such," said David Wilson, Church of the Nazarene general secretary. "If you or anyone you know receives suspicious communication, it is always best to confirm the person s identity by contacting the appropriate church, district, regional, or Global Ministry Center office in a separate to a known address." For more information, the General Secretary s Office at gensec@nazarene.org
Teresa Hodge NMI President John Butler Treasurer East Tennessee Missions Story In Three Chapters ( Be sure and follow through Chapter 3 to Including our Spanish Churches in our East TN District Family! By the time you read this story, you probably will have already given your September Alabaster Offering, but I wanted to share with you how a Work & Witness trip, sponsored by your 2015 Valentines for Jesus offering, led to the blessing of getting acquainted with our E TN Spanish churches, and ultimately, to a district mission tour with Spanish speaking missionaries! Chapter 1: East Tennessee District NMI Alabaster and Work and Witness Connection Photo - This is the first Alabaster project EVER, built in 1949, and since renovated by E TN! Alabaster and Work & Witness have become great partners. Alabaster funds often help provide land for many Work & Witness Projects. Then, Work & Witness can come into play, and provide constructions funds and workers making funds for the construction of churches, schools, medical facilities, and homes for missionaries and national workers stretch much further than they would otherwise. Work & Witness also gives us a great vantage point, enabling Nazarenes to view Alabaster construction history. I treasure this picture of the Nazarene Bible Institute, in Coban, Guatemala, taken on our district s 2016 Work & Witness trip to build a parsonage a few miles from Coban, in San Juan Chamelco, Guatemala. It is the first structure ever built with Alabaster funds, in 1949, soon after the beginning of Alabaster offerings. When our team walked through this beautiful campus, team members were struck with many different impressions. Don Moore, our W&W team leader, remembered fondly the trip he led in 2009, putting a new roof on the main building. Medical personnel on the team will long remember the clinic on the campus, where pastors presently serving in the area receive medical care. I will never forget the Holy Spirit praying through me as I was asked to pray over the Guatemalan district advisory board meeting at the Bible School the afternoon that we were there. All team members will remember the offices where mission pioneers, William and Betty Sedat painstakingly committed the Kekchi language to a written language, then translated the entire Bible for these precious people! Praise God for the opportunity to see (and photograph) living church history, compliments of Alabaster and Work & Witness!
NMI cont. Chapter 2: Back in East Tennessee When we returned to E TN, it occurred to me that our team had taken Jesus Film equipment, soccer balls, projectors, and other gifts to our church in Guatemala, yet we had a Spanish speaking church, with a Guatemalan pastor, Revered Marcos Balthazar, just 30 minutes from my home! Thank God for His aha moments! That led to getting to know you trips to all our Spanish churches. Our Jesus Film Coordinator, Scott Blair and wife Debbie accompanied Jim and me, carrying armloads of the same equipment we had taken to Guatemala. What fun we had getting to know our awesome Hispanic church family! 13 ET NYI, Nazarene EXPLOSION 2017 will be here before we know it! And, because of that I want you to be prepared for the NEW stuff coming your way! Let me explain. This year we have several NEW and exciting opportunities for you and your church to be involved in. They will include: * Nazarene EXPLOSION BLOCK PARTY. Once the competition ends the fun will begin! We will have an inflatable, 9 Square in the Air, a meal together, a service including a group from Trevecca and more ALL included in your registration fee. * Not only will we continue the 6 on 6 Dodgeball tournament this year but we will also have a 3 on 3 Men's Basketball tournament as well as a 6 on 6 Ladies' Volleyball tournament. * On Sunday morning we will gather together for a closing service as we celebrate our Creator! Pastor Bill Willis from Southview Community will be our speaker for the weekend. For this ALL to occur a few things are going to have to happen. * Instead of 1 night's lodging you will need 2. The Foothills Camp & Retreat Center has extended a gracious offer of JUST $22.00 for 2 night's lodging and 2 breakfast buffets. Housing will be on a first come first served basis! FCRC's sleeping capacity is now up to 250 but that could fill up quick! We had around 200 last year! MAKE your reservations soon! In addition to the FCRC option I have secured a rate of $95.00 plus tax per night (regular rate is $ plus tax per night) at the Best Western Plus which is less than 5 miles from Knoxville 1st Church of the Nazarene. According to TripAdvisor reviews Best Western Plus was rated the #5 hotel out of 87 hotels in Knoxville. Carol Golden and her team will take good care of you if you choose to stay there. Our block is limited and will be released to the public after October 10. Just tell them you are with the East Tennessee NYI. * The registration fee will increase from $15.00 to $25.00 per registered participate and will include a t-shirt, Saturday evening meal as well as the BLOCK PARTY snacks. This increase will help cover our added expenses from our activities on Saturday afternoon and evening. I'm excited over the potential of this NEW format and look forward to the possibilities as we continue to grow Nazarene EXPLOSION! More information will be passed on to you as it becomes available. Help me pray for God's direction and AWESOME weather for November 10-12! Thanks! "Don't give up on God when you need Him the most!"
