1 Dr. Larry W. Leonard District Superintendent 2017 A VALENTINE FOR THE NATIONS It seems a little strange to me to arrive at the month of February, the month of Valentine s love emphasis, only to be confronted with an emotional, angry, and fractured culture both outside and inside the Church. I understand the lack of love in our secular society, but for Christians to be so anemic in our selfless concern for others, I am left empty, sad, and searching. If the self-absorbed ethos of our nation had not crept into our Christian fellowship, there would be little need for this article. In seeking answers I feel led to propose that perhaps our greatest flaw is that we have lost touch with the authentic meaning of the word love. If God is love, and God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, and if love really does cover a multitude of evil, and There is no fear in love because perfect love drives out fear, then why isn t love informing our thoughts, words, and actions? Perhaps we need to reinvest in the power of scripture. Eugene Peterson, in The Message, paraphrased 1 Corinthians 13 to open up to us the full impact of this one all-encompassing word, love. Please internalize and take personal this passage as if you are hearing it for the first time. If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don t love, I m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, Jump, and it jumps, but I don t love, I m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don t love, I ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I m bankrupt without love. Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn t want what it doesn t have. Love doesn t strut, Doesn t have a swelled head, Doesn t force itself on others, Isn t always me first, Doesn t fly off the handle, Doesn t keep score of the sins of others, Doesn t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end. Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over some day; praying in tongues will end; understanding will reach its limit. We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is always incomplete. But when the Complete arrives, our incompletes will be canceled. When I was an infant at my mother s breast, I gurgled and cooed like any infant. When I grew up, I left those infant ways for good. We don t yet see things clearly. We re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us! But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love.

4 Mrs. Mary Friedeman NMI President ECUADOR WORK & WITNESS NEWSFLASH! One spot has opened up for the trip to Ecuador, March If you are interested in participating, please contact Melanie Holcomb ASAP FEBRUARY: Alabaster Since 1949, over 100 million dollars has been given globally through the Alabaster offering, to erect buildings around the world for the purpose of ministry. More than 9,000 projects - including churches, schools, medical facilities, and homes for missionaries and national workers - have been constructed with these monies. Last year, 58% of MidSouth churches participated in this offering, contributing $47,103. So far this year, 46% of our district churches have given a total of $29,846. Every congregation is encouraged take part in the Alabaster offering this month! DEPUTATION UPDATE The MidSouth District recently enjoyed a deputation tour by Brian Helstrom with the Jesus Film. Brian spoke at five mission area rallies, two church services, and a men s breakfast. One pastor reported, NMI: Nazarene Missions International The time Brian spent with us at my church was great. He spoke from a deep passion about spreading the gospel, and it was awesome to see all of the electronic tools and other items that we are using globally to teach and disciple the people of God worldwide. My people were encouraged and inspired to hear of what God is doing through the Jesus Film ministry, and I was thrilled to host Brian and his wife. They were very encouraging to me in my ministry, and a blessing to have. I am so proud of our denomination when I see that people in places of leadership like he is are marked by such wonderful spiritual maturity and passion. I look forward to seeing them again whenever I can, and I am grateful for the opportunity to host them and be a part of their ministry. It was a great night! Deputation services provide an unparalleled opportunity to see the fruit of our mission giving. If you would like to schedule a missionary to speak in your local church, contact the district NMI president (maryfriedeman@ gmail.com or ).
