3 Page 3 Minnesota South District Women On A Mission Summer, 2014 Issue PRINTED: May, 2014 Up the Creek Without a Paddle This saying originated at the time of World War II, meaning you were in deep trouble and unable to do anything about it UNLESS you were RESCUED! Consider the following examples and perhaps for one moment they may have felt they were Up the Creek Without a Paddle. Joseph: Gen. 37:22 NIV Don t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert but don t lay a hand on him. Rueben, said this to RESCUE him from them and take him back to his father. Talk about not being able to do anything! Daniel: Daniel 6:16 NIV So the King gave the order and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lion s den. The king said to Daniel may your God whom you serve continually, RESCUE you. Dan.6:22 NIV My God sent His angel and He shut the mouths of the lions. RESCUED! Apostle Paul had been preaching in the Sanhedrin, the Jews became so angry, we are told in Acts 23:27 NIV This man [Paul] was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him, but I [Claudius Lysias] came with my troops and RESCUED him. Paul, perhaps, thought God still had work for him to do. What about each and every one of us? Eph. 2:1a NIV As for you, you were dead in transgressions and sins. We are just plain dead and can t do anything about it! WAIT! 2 Tim. 4:18 has a message just for us. The Lord will RES- CUE me from every deed and bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen The Christian Life Committee is ready and excited to share Christian Life day, June 20 th of the District LWML Convention, with you. The theme is PREPARE - INSPIRE - NOURISH - GO. YOU ALL COME! Vice President of Christian Life Joan Proehl Continued from page 1 inspiring stories of how the Lord has blessed our schools, changed lives, and fulfilled its mission to extend the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Thanks for your support! Audio Bible Study Lutheran Blind Mission, Rev. Dr. Phil Pledger, president of LBM/LBW says, Thank you for your generous gifts that offer people hope through Jesus. God does not exact retribution for sins from us. Jesus willingly paid the high cost for every sin and freely gives us forgiveness, hope and life. Thank you for your prayers and generous support for this project. Mission Central Support of Missionaries Worldwide, from Rev. Arthur Rickman, this past month I have had the privilege of installing two new shepherds to serve in Latin America and the Caribbean. Rev. Bob Luinstra was installed to serve as the pastor of Safe Harbor Lutheran Church, an International Lutheran congregation in Grand Cayman. Rev. Carlos Catalan was installed and is serving an independent Lutheran congregation in Guadalajara, Mexico. Please pray for these pastors as they faithfully serve these congregations that have been entrusted to their care. Lutheran Indian Ministries, Rev. Dr. Don Johnson, I speak for every member of our staff when I say that we greatly value your partnership in mission. None of us wants to think about where we d be without your prayer support. With your financial giving, we are able to put ministry into action. From remote communities in Alaska to our campus ministry at Haskell Indian Nations University, men and women are hearing the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ. Trinity/HOPE (Haiti), Denise Gudlin states, In a country where education historically has not been a priority (literacy rate of approximately 50%), it is exciting to see attendance in the schools we feed increase, a couple more than 200%. This year we have added three schools to our feeding program. We know God will lead us with the directions we take to accomplish His plan. Thank you for your support helping us feed over 17,500 meals a day. Special Education Services in Lutheran Schools, While our programs and services have changed throughout the years, one thing has always remained constant the importance of the children we serve! This school year ( ), we have served over 1,200 children; compared to last year of 900 children. Thank you for your continued support and prayers to God s call to support these children with learning needs. Community Outreach through Summer Bridge to Success (Minneapolis), Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your donations to our Summer Bridge to Success program and to Trinity First School. Your generosity and thoughtfulness is such a wonder to witness and we are blessed because of it. Continued on page 5

4 Page 4 Minnesota South District Women On A Mission Summer, 2014 Issue PRINTED: May, 2014 Everlasting Rescue: What the Past Means For Our Future Rev. Lowell Sorenson, Pastoral Counselor The 25th Biennial LWML Convention of the Minnesota South District is coming up! We will gather under the theme: Everlasting Rescue. We thank God for the promise in His Holy Word: The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom. To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen (2 Timothy 4:18, ESV). The Scriptures sometimes talk about our rescue as being in the future. Such is certainly the case with our theme verse. True, we haven t reached our final destination yet. The Last Day has not yet arrived and with it the opening of all the graves. But did you know that in the past the Lord planned for your eternal rescue? Did you know that the Lord, even before He created Adam and Eve, looked upon you in love and set out to deliver you from your sins? Even more, in Christ Jesus you were chosen to be an heir of heaven. It is true! Consider what the Blessed Apostle wrote in his letter to the Ephesians: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace, with which He has blessed us in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace, which He lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight (1:3 8, ESV). In Christ Jesus, we can be confident that the everlasting rescue that is ours today and tomorrow is ours because of what God has done in the past. As we trust in Christ Jesus for our salvation, we also thank God for His electing grace. Lutherans sometimes shy away from talking about predestination. But when one appreciates this doctrine rightly, it is nothing but sheer grace and comfort and joy for us! We can do nothing to earn God s favor. There is nothing we can do to merit forgiveness of sins. It is a gift of God. It is a gift God prepared for us before we were even born. But after we were born, God was at work to bring us the gifts He so determined to give us. In Baptism we are clothed with Christ. In God s Word we are built up in faith. We feed on the true body and blood of the Lord Jesus for the nourishing of our hope. And today, yes, today, we say in faith: I have eternal life. Jesus says: Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My Word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life (John 5:24, ESV). Everlasting salvation isn t just about the future. It s present. In Christ we have passed through the judgment unto eternal life! And we have everlasting rescue today because of what God has done for us in the past. Two millennia ago, Jesus died and rose again for us. To secure our forgiveness and deliverance. And even before the foundation of the world blessed thought God chose you and me in Christ to be His people. That s grace! That s everlasting rescue! 2014 LWML Prayer Service This Is What We Are Baptized For 2013 was an interesting year in our church body. The Youth Gathering and the Lutheran Women s Missionary League (LWML) Convention and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) Convention were all held in one summer. If you paid attention you could look at the themes and see your baptism in the background. This prayer service is designed to help us find out what we are baptized for and to ask for the strength and grace to do it. It includes an original hymn by the author, Rev. Bernhard Seter, based on the words of the LWML Pledge. Seter said, I am convinced when I read the LWML pledge that works of mercy and service in support of Gospel proclamation is what all of us were baptized for. [That sentence] may be bad grammar but it is great theology. Author Rev. Bernhard Seter serves three North Dakota congregations: Zion English Lutheran in Grafton, Trinity Lutheran in Drayton, and St. John Lutheran in Crystal. He also serves as the Chaplain at the Life Skills and Transition Center in Grafton, and as the Chair for the Board for International Missions. He has traveled to Africa and works with Project 24, a group of five laymen who are trying to build rescue centers for orphans in Kenya. He visited India, Southeast Asia, and the Dominican Republic to see firsthand the missions and ministries supported by the LWML. Seter is married to Faye, a former parochial school teacher and former Christian Growth Director in the local LWML. You ll find the 2014 LWML Prayer Service, hymn and music at prayer-service.php. If you are unable to download the service please contact the LWML Office at lwml@lwml.org or call to obtain a paper copy.

5 Page 5 Minnesota South District Women On A Mission Summer, 2014 Issue PRINTED: May, 2014 Change Happens Take the Lord with You Do you ever try to get things done and suddenly wonder why you aren t moving any faster? Or jobs aren t getting done more quickly? Or maybe not getting done at all? What is your priority and where is your focus? As it says in Proverbs 21:5, The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. We keep at our jobs, our responsibilities and eventually things seem to get done. Maybe we have forgotten to first take it to the Lord in prayer. Many times as you look back you can recall when you took it to the Lord in prayer and you later think how smoothly it went. Or maybe even with some bumps in the road knowing that the Lord was walking right beside you, it got done. Another time you might have taken it to the Lord in prayer, but then proceeded to try to cut corners and it didn t work out. This also applies to us in LWML; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Wait for an answer, then proceed. As we truly praise the Lord that this past biennium all of you faithful LWMLers and friends at your churches filled those mite boxes and the mite goal was met. Hallelujah. Let us look at five points or reasons as to how things might happen. First is the right thought, that we had a goal to meet. We would be diligent in prayer as we put in our mites and the goal would be met. Second is the right people. That is those who believed in what LWML is and stands for. Remembering our objects of Mission Inspiration (based on the Word), Mission Education(Bible Study), and Mission Service (service to the Lord both in the church and wherever you are). Third is the right environment. In LWML thinking is valued, ideas flow freely, fresh eyes and ideas are welcome, changes are expected, questions are encouraged, egos are checked, one idea leads to another idea, and teamwork is generated. DOES this sound like the district these past four years following restructuring? I think it does. Fourth is the right time. Plan for what needs to be done; while waiting as the planning moves along, be ready to change if need be. Then it will get done. This was evident again with the mite goal being met. Fifth and final have the right reason to do something. It needs to be an idea which fulfills God s purposes and shows His love for others through all that we do. That is what has been the goal of LWML. One of the ways we all show this is through our Bible studies, mite giving, and fellowship with each other. With the upcoming convention we will have another opportunity to show all of these reasons. Blessings to each of you. Hope to see many of you at the convention. If you can not be there, support us in prayer that in all that is said and done it may be done to God s glory. Darleen A. Harens, LWML Minnesota South District President continued from page 3 Through God s gifts to this program, we are able to ensure that no family will be turned away from hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ because of an inability to pay. (Carrie Butcher, Program Director.) Our Mites at Work, with God become Mighty Mites at Work for God s Kingdom! Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift! 2 Corinthians 9:15 Debi Ylitalo, Vice President of Gospel Outreach Mite Minute We have met our goal! See the front page for the totals. When writing dates, spell out all months and days of the week. When writing a month, day, and year, place a comma after both the day and the year. (The zone rally was held on October 23, 2008, in the sanctuary.) When writing only a month and a year, do not separate with commas. (The convention will be in June 2014.) When writing a weekday and date, use commas after both. (Bring donations by Sunday, March 12, in order to meet the deadline.) DO NOT use ordinal numbers (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th) in dates. An ordinal number indicates the position in a series, its order, or the way it may be pronounced. (As an example April 22, 2014, may or will be pronounced as April twenty second two thousand fourteen, but never written with the nd after the number twenty-two.)
