2 SIGN-UP FOR LATE SERVICE GREETERS This will be located in the Narthex on Sundays. If this is something you d enjoy, please feel free to choose one or more Sundays. Upcoming in Worship There s an entire book of the Bible focused on wisdom: what it is, how to grow in it, and how it can grow in us. It s the Book of Proverbs. Our fall worship services will focus around The Way of Wisdom: Guidance for Daily Living. Each sermon will take one or more Proverbs as a launching place, and then help us see how wisdom can help us to better address a particular life challenge. This will be a very practical series that helps us prayerfully discern what s true, right, and lasting in our own lives, families, places of work, and community. You won t want to miss a single week! Oct. 23 "Wise Anger Management" Selected Proverbs; Eph. 4:26-27, 30-32; James 1:19 This Sunday's Scripture (click here) Christian Education Connections for All Ages - Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Children: Our youngest children (birth-2 years old) get to hear a Bible story each Sunday in Childcare in Lower Calvin. Our Preschoolers (3 & 4 year-olds), and Elementary Ages (K-4) are diving into Deep Blue, a weekly adventure through the Bible. Middle Schoolers (grades 5-6) will explore the Submerge Curriculum from Cokesbury. Children s classes meet in the Knox building. Youth: UPY Mornings (grades 7-12) meet in Lower Witherspoon to discuss The God We Can Know by Rob Fuquay. This study considers the I Am statements of Jesus. Adults: We have four study groups this fall: The Bible Study Class (led by Dennis Brewer) is exploring the theme The Sovereignty of God: The Mountain of God in Isaiah. (Calvin 203). The Open Door Class (led by Carol Van Scyoc) is discussing the Animate - Bible Series. (Calvin 202). The Theology Class (led by Derrik Olsen and Phil Butin) is discussing Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr (Calvin 201). Second Sunday Study (monthly) hosted by Presbyterian Women. This group is studying from the new Horizons Bible Study, Who Is Jesus: What a Difference a Lens Makes, by Judy Yates Siker. This Sunday morning Bible Study launched on Sunday, September 11. It meets on the second Sunday of each month in Upper Witherspoon. The next meeting will be this Sunday, November 13.. 3 ALL-CHURCH MISSION SUNDAY OCTOBER 30 We will be working during the Christian Education time (9:30-10:45 a.m.) so that both those who attend the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services will be able to be included in wonderful event! Due to the recent devastation in the Caribbean (particularly Haiti) and the Eastern Coast of the U.S., we are shifting our focus to the massive clean-up and assistance needs following Hurricane Matthew. We will be learning more about how the PC(USA) assists in times of disaster and will be putting together health kits to be sent where needed most. All ages will have a way to contribute and it will be fun! Those who prefer to be outdoors will want to dress comfortably to remove invasive plants from our church grounds. There is also a need for gently used (or new) sweatshirts, coats, gloves, jeans (and especially, new socks) for our friends at Sunday Supper. Larger sizes for adults and children are most needed. You won t want to miss this wonderful morning! DEACON MINI-RETREAT NEXT SUNDAY We re looking forward to a wonderful time of fellowship and learning as ALL deacons (current and incoming) gather in Upper Witherspoon on Sunday, October 30, from 12:15-3:30 p.m. This is the primary training event for deacons who will begin terms in Lunch is provided. It will be an afternoon of refreshment and fun, coupled with understanding the ministry of deacons and specifically, visitation. More information has been by to all deacons. THE NEW FUPC AND FIRST SCHOOL MARRIAGE GROUP We're off to a great start as we discuss Gary Chapman s The Five Love Languages. The setting is casual and couple-based. As much time will be spent as a couple as is spent in the larger group. Each time we meet, we ll touch base, have a short presentation, write to our spouses, and bring back any sharing we d like for the larger group. Appetizers - 5:45-6:00 p.m. Group - 6:00-7:00 p.m. Afterward, you can have a Date Night or go out with other couples who attend. Fall schedule dates remaining: November 4, December 2. Childcare will be provided at the church from 5:30-8:30 p.m. for those who sign up a week in advance (twenty spaces are available). We hope to see you! 4 STEWARDSHIP EVENTS COMING IN NOVEMBER Our Worship Theme is Good Stewards of God s Abundant Grace. Please join us for the Stewardship Potluck Brunch on November 6 from 9:30 10:30 a.m., in the Fellowship Hall, to give thanks to God for all of our blessings, and to prayerfully reflect on how our 2017 financial pledges can support the church s vision for God s mission. This is a chance to look over the 2017 challenge budget and ask questions about anything you would like to know regarding the church s finances. Everyone is invited. Special stewardship activities for the children will be led by Christian Education Director Kristi Button. Please bring your favorite breakfast dish. Coffee and juice will be provided. Dedication Sunday will follow on November 13, as we Glorifying God in All Things by offering our pledges of time, talent and treasure to God in worship. CALLING ALL DANCERS AND LOVERS OF DANCE! We want to have a liturgical dance as part of the November 13th service. Would you like to be involved? Please contact Jan Butin or Brianne Christiansen (jbutin@fupcfay.org, bchristiansen@fupcfay.org or ) this week. A CONGREGATIONAL MEETING with a light lunch is scheduled on Sunday, November 20, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m., to share and refine current ideas regarding various proposals for updating and renovating the sanctuary area. The architectural team of Tom Fennell, Tim Maddox, and Sara McElroy will be present to share initial ideas and to receive additional input. Current needs identified by the Session and the Sanctuary Area Renovation Task Force include expanding the all-weather gathering space at the entrance to the sanctuary to create a more welcoming atmosphere, adding sufficient restroom capacity, adding the capability for tasteful projection, updating the choir room in a way that allows for smaller worship experiences there, beautifying the sunken area outside the choir room, and allowing for dry and safe passage between the sanctuary building and Upper Witherspoon in inclement weather. Our goal is to focus not only on our own needs and preferences, but also on the future needs of younger members and families whom we pray will become a part of our church family. Please plan to join us for this exciting informational meeting. ALTERNATIVE MARKET COMING DECEMBER 11 Can t figure out what to give that person on your Christmas list doesn t need anything? Want to give someone something a bit different? Do your shopping at the FUPC Alternative Market. Every purchase benefits someone in need of a job, in need of a home, in need of hope. CELEBRATION AT THE MANGER COMING SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11 The Advent season is coming quickly and Celebration at the Manger is a wonderful event for our church families. We are looking for children to share music. If your child plays an instrument or would like to sing, please let Kristi Button know so we can add them to the musical interludes of the program. Please talk to your child s music teachers about the Christmas songs they might practice between now and December 11. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OUR FEEDING MINISTRIES Do you have organizational gifts, the ability to cook, or enjoy working with others and serving God through ministering among the least of these? Now is the time to use your 4

5 gifts. After much thought and prayer, the Outreach Committee is re-vamping how we re going to approach our community feeding ministries programs (Community Meals at 7 Hills and Sunday Suppers at Trinity United Methodist Church). Once a month we prepare a meal and serve it at each of these two locations that address hunger and food insecurity for vulnerable populations in our community. Our new model for the Community Meals and Sunday Suppers programs is team-based. We need up to twelve team leaders for each program to be responsible for the meal on either the third Friday (Community Meals) or the first Sunday (Sunday Suppers) of each month. If leaders would sign up for more than one month, it would reduce the number of leaders needed. A leader asks church or community friends to be on a meal team. Each month a nutritious, and inexpensive meal is planned and the food is purchased, prepared, served, and cleaned up (although with Sunday Supper,s our friends from Mount Comfort Presbyterian Church do most of the cleaning and setting up). A team can be as small as five people or as many as the leader would like, and costs within the $150 per meal budget are covered by the church. Please prayerfully consider whether you feel called to lead or to be a part of a team. Contact Rev. Leslie Belden ( or lesliebeld@aol.com) if you have questions. And if someone asks you to assist them on a team, consider responding with an enthusiastic yes! GIVE. ACT. PRAY. Our hearts and prayers are with the people affected by Hurricane Matthew. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is already on site. Financial support for relief efforts can be designated to DR with reference to Matthew. Gifts can be made online at pma.pcusa.org (then search disaster relief), by phone at (800) , or by check (which can be given through FUPC or mailed to the address below). Please pray for those who have suffered loss of family or home and for those working tirelessly to provide rescue, humanitarian aid, and spiritual and psychological support. Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) P.O. Box Pittsburgh, PA SIGN UP TO BE A YOUNG ADULT HOST FAMILY We are currently recruiting church families to serve as "host families" for college and graduate students. The commitment is minimal - just help a college student feel a little more at home in Fayetteville. This could be: inviting them over for a meal once in a while, sending cookies, or offering your laundry facilities. Contact Brianne ( or bchristiansen@fupcfay.org),for more information. COOPERATIVE EMERGENCY OUTREACH CEO has continued to increase the ability to feed and provide financial assistance to community members and was proud to assist 1100 people in August. The ability to continue to support the community in this way is thanks in part to your financial contributions to this church. CEO also depends on volunteers to be able to do the good work it does and CEO NEEDS VOLUNTEERS. If you are interested in helping CEO, please contact Natalie Pomeroy at (479) or bobwpomeroy@gmail.com for more information. CEO appreciates cash donations to be able to efficiently meet the needs of the community, but right now, CEO needs boxes of healthy cereal. Donations 5

6 are received during worship on the first Sunday of each month and there is always a donation bin in the hallway outside the main office. You can deposit your contribution at any time. Thanks. GENEROUS GIVING FROM FUPC The Special Offering for organizations that FUPC supports enriches our ministry, and the ministries of many. To date, $4, has been given to the following organizations: $1,018 to 7 Hills; $637 to the Individual Assistance Fund; $ to Peace at Home; $345 to Youth Mission; $325 to Habitat for Humanity; $242 to Hope Cancer Center; $200 to United Campus Ministry; $150 to our Honduras Ministry; $150 to Vera Loyd; $135 to Casa; $125 to the Rice Depot; $110 to Dwight Mission; $100 to Comunidad Presbiteriana Hispana; $75 to Ferncliff; $50 to Children s House; $50 to Pack Shack Meals/Mission Sunday; $25 to LifeStyles; $25 to CEO; and $20 to Heifer Project. Thank you! UCM'S BIBLE IN A PUB IS BACK New leadership, same great fellowship! This fall we will be reading and discussing God is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run the World by Stephen Prothero. Reading the book is helpful but not required. All are welcome! Bring your lunch and join us! FELLOW SHAPE CLASSES Yoga and Zumba classes are available at FUPC. Each class will cost $5 per person. Beginner yoga requires only a mat (if you don t already have a mat, there are several available to borrow). Zumba is a high energy Latin dance party and tennis shoes are recommended. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO SERVE AS SOUND BOARD OPERATORS Anyone interested in learning more about the soundboard and its operation during worship should contact Michael Shuman (mshuman@fupcfay.org). Training includes basic operations and one-on-one training during a service. APP FOR DAILY BIBLE READING A recent sermon encouraged us to prayerfully study scripture each day. The PC(USA) offers an App for iphone and Android with daily Bible readings called Daily Prayer PC(USA). We encourage you to download this from the App store, Google Play, or to 6
