Join Dr. Benjamin Ha as he shares his personal journey to better health through a whole food, plant-based approach to nutrition. Dr. Ha will explain how going plant-based can help you to lose weight, eliminate prescription medications, and even reverse chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Packed with tips and resources on getting started, this presentation will empower you to reclaim your health one bite at a time! Dr. Benjamin Ha is a Family Physician with Kaiser Permanente Kern County. For over ten years he led local efforts to improve clinical quality of care, chronic disease management, and health education for members, including healthy lifestyle and weight management programs. Dr. Ha earned a bachelor of science degree in biology and psychology from Duke University and doctor of medicine degree from the East Carolina University School of Medicine. He completed his family medicine residency at Long Beach Memorial and joined Kaiser Permanente Kern County in Normal disbursements for St. Paul s accounts payable are normally done twice a month at the middle of the month and the end. Things like vacations and illness can cause changes in the planned schedule. If you have a ministry reimbursement form or time card to submit for payment please do so in a timely manner. Forms turned in after the 5 th of the month following the month the service or purchase was completed may result in payment being delayed until the next time AR (accounts receivable) are completed. Please do not hold onto any and all payment requests longer than 5-10 days as this results in monthly financial statements not showing an accurate view of finances. If you have any questions please contact our Bishop s Warden Cindy Smith. Solar Project Update: After several delays from PG & E and our contractor, St. Paul's Solar Project is back on track and approaching completion. AC Electric has been making final modifications necessary for the PG&E tie-in to take place in the days to come. Watch this space for more news! 4 Voter Engagement and Canvassing Saturday s voter engagement and canvassing with the Justice Committee went well. We re doing it all again this Saturday (and every Saturday until the election) so please join us. We re starting at 10:00 this time so you don t have to get up so early. We ll be talking more about some local issues and the importance of using them as a way to get people to vote. Before we hit the streets, we ll talk some more about these issues so you ll be well-prepared when you talk to people. Like last Saturday, we ll be focusing on the area around St. Paul s for our canvassing and we ll go in pairs. We all know the importance of voting. But being registered to vote is only the first step. It doesn t do anything if you don t vote. Please help your community by turning out the vote. We ll see you Saturday. Meet in the Forum. Food Co-op Shopping List We served 30 clients this past Sunday so our shelves need restocking. Please put us on your shopping list and help us restock our shelves from the list below. If interested in purchasing a coupon book, please contact Ms. Lydia in the Child Development Center At Thanks Lydia Deanery meeting: All are welcome to the Southern Deanery meeting here at St. Paul's this Saturday from 10- noon. Come and meet other south valley Episcopalians and hear what's going on at our neighboring churches. We'll be reviewing items for our October Diocesan Convention, including the budget, resolution and elections. St. Paul's Delegates, Canon Anna and Bishop David will be in attendance. Our Project Resource Team - which is lead by Marianne Wilson and Brian Whitfield - will participate in the afternoon training from 1-3 pm along with Project Resource Teams from our other Southern Deanery congregations. Project Resource provides the tools to inspire radical generosity and engage faith communities in the life-changing work of fundraising as a radical act of reconciliation; a process that can both draw the giver closer to God and repair an unjust world. In the coming months, our Team will help St. Paul's begin a journey experiencing how The Episcopal Church is changing its culture of stewardship. 4

5 Your crazy vergers (Eric & Will), (Vergers are those folks who get to wear all kinds of cool robes and hats when they process)... hope to raise $2,500. for the primary church functions. They are accepting donations of a minimum of $15. for a beautiful photo-ed St. Paul's coffee mug. These make great Christmas gifts, and can be filled with lots of candy, coffee, and/or love. Let's all help keep St. Paul's on a sustainable path of unity! Buy once,... Buy twice,...buy often! These are in limited supply, so buy quickly! These mugs are destined to become "classics"! The Center for Sexuality & Gender Diversity, in partnership with California State University-Bakersfield's Kegley Institute of Ethics and the CSUB Institute for Religion, Education, and Public Policy (IREPP), will host a unique interfaith forum on the acceptance and contributions of LGBTQ people in Kern County spiritual communities. Called "Faith's Rainbow," to symbolize both the hope and diversity in belief systems that exist for LGBTQ people of faith, the 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 community event will be held at The Center's Downtown Bakersfield location at th Street. It will include Christian, Buddhist, Jewish and Unitarian Universalist perspectives, plus a look at 12-Step spiritual recovery perspectives for those dealing with addiction. The Christian perspective will be presented by our Bishop David Rice, representing Bakersfield and diocesan Episcopalians. This event is free. For more information, contact Jan Dunlap or Cindy Smith. Yellow Bag Ministry Daughters of the King fill 40 bags each month with basic necessities for the homeless. This month we commented how the homeless were less visible due to the extreme heat. As a result we have asked Rueben, one of our security guards, to take the bags to an encampment. He reported that the homeless people sobbed and praised God upon receiving the bags. If you would like to be part of this ministry you may choose to donate materials or money. (It costs about $4 to fill 1 bag.) Contact Susan Barle. 5
