The TLC Trumpet Keeping you informed and sharing our experience, strength & hope in the love of Christ Volume 7 No. 3 March 2010 I f you have a little curiosity about why the date on which we celebrate Christ s resurrection changes every year, beware the knowledge abyss of the internet. You can get some knowledge, but I m not so sure you will gain wisdom. After splashing around in Google TM for a few minutes and three websites, my brain was reeling from the phenomenal sorts of months that we have come up with by marking time by the moon (see Genesis 1:14, even though it doesn t mention months). To name a few, there s: Anomalistic, Astronomic, Draconic, Ecclesiastic, Nodal, Sidereal, Synodic, Tropical. Holy Moly! The synodic month is a good one. According to this scale, one month is precisely 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 3 seconds. Goodness! To use the standard Western church explanation: the day falls on the first Sunday that follows the first full moon (March 30 this year) that follows the Vernal Equinox (March 21), using the Gregorian calendar that the church adopted, which differed from Caesar s Julian calendar. It s intriguing that this most holy of days floats around. It s like the very nature of it cannot be grounded here. Awesome. No matter how you calculate it, it comes down to a day to worship, to just blatantly flaunt the hope and assurance that is ours in the victory of Christ s resurrection, which does indeed take away the sting of death. Just as we have managed to pack a lot of baggage around marking time, we pack a lot into this celebration. It s a time for families and feasts, parades and egg hunts. It s time off from school, so some jam one more ski trip in or some Spring getaway. And of course you can spend a lot of money buying cards and plastic grass and bonnets and hot cross buns and food dye and icon-shaped chocolates. There are probably Wii egg hunts and Nintendo bunny blasting blue-ray 3-D games out there --- not my world, so I don t even have the right vocabulary. If your observance of this event makes sitting in your sanctuary with your faith community, hearing sacred scriptures read (egad, you mean there isn t even a dvd show? Sorry, nope.), observing the ritual of spiritual unity through Holy Communion, praying, etc. seem b-o-r-i-n-g, then Get On Bored!!!!

Joint Ministry Progressive Dinner: New Year, New Friends T LC s traditional winter Progressive Dinner was carried to its logical extreme in January with a Progressive Dinner including Bethlehem and Faith Lutheran Churches. At $10 each, 110 tickets were sold and 97 people attended. Bethlehem sold the most tickets, 40, closely followed by TLC with 37. The evening began at 4:30 with hors d oeuvres at TLC. Betty Hiebel supervised the seating layout and the food creations. It was nice to see people mixing with members of other churches. Then 97 people descended upon Bethlehem for dinner. Many arrived in the middle of a hail storm what luck! Elaine Adams had all the tables and seating prepared for our arrival. Table assignments were carefully planned so we would become acquainted with people from other churches. The catered dinner featured turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and gravy. From the Mail Hi Ladies, We wanted to send a card to say Thank you! for inviting us, including us, and welcoming us into your women s retreat this past weekend. What a wonderful and enriching time we all had! We were inspired and blessed by not only the sessions, but even more by the connections we made with all of you. We felt so welcomed and each of you shared and witnessed Christ s love to us. We look forward to more joint adventures in the future. In Christ, The Bethlehem Women (Dorothy Wagner, Judy Flowers, Bev Schaap, Janet Bergman, Carolyn Cole-Schweizer, Lorie Moser, Charlene Shaw, Phyllis Hoover) Dear Thanksgiving Lutheran Church, Thank you for your gift on January 22, 2010 of $ to ELCA Disaster Response designated for relief and recovery work in Haiti following the devastating earthquake. Through the ELCA, 100% of your gift will go directly to the relief and ongoing recovery efforts in Haiti. This is possible because of the support we 3 Then 97 people descended on Faith Lutheran Church for dessert. There, we were overwhelmed with multiple tables loaded down with pie. All kinds of pie each slice resting on a plate with a fork, waiting for consumption. Our thanks to Janet Hammond for recruiting all the pie bakers at Faith. And what happened to the left-over pies? The tables were left up in the sanctuary, and after the next morning s service everyone dove in! Our great thanks to Betty Hiebel for knocking herself out on the Planning Committee. At TLC, she supervised the set-up and hors d oeuvres preparation, plus the dinner planning with the caterer. Also, thanks to the entire CCC Committee for the set-up operation. Our thanks also to Lisa and Greg Bartlett for their job of cleaning up the mess we made. And to Mary Dawson for her decorations and her forethought of knowing when it was time to leave. George Land receive through the weekly offerings of members shared by congregations. The facilities of the Lutheran World Federation in Haiti were not harmed by the quake and the team there was able to launch an immediate response. Your gift provides food, clean water, medical care, and emergency supplies to people affected by this disaster. As recovery progresses, we will help the Haitian people piece their lives and livelihoods back together and continue our efforts to help families overcome extreme poverty. For years, ELCA World Hunger has helped communities in Haiti to increase production of crops and livestock, protect soil and water resources, develop sustainable livelihoods, and promote peace and human rights. Despite political strife, natural disaster, and the ongoing crisis of extreme poverty, faithful ministry continues in Haiti. Your gift makes this possible. Please continue to hold our sisters and brothers in Haiti in your prayers. Thank you for your generous gift of help and hope. In Christ s service, The Rev. Daniel Rift, Director ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal

Treasurer s Report Financial News There's good news and bad news in the Financial Department as we begin January had a deficit of $4, The bad news is that we continue to run at a deficit. The good news is that there is over $3,000 coming from Samsung because of the rebate for the copier contract. That should be reflected in February's figures. An increase in income is greatly to be desired but this is indeed a blessed congregation. Thank you all for your faithful and generous giving. Special Fund Totals As of 2/8/10 Stained Glass Window $3, Memorial Gardens $ Sanctuary Chairs $ Landscaping $ Fair Trade Coffee Pour Justice to the Brim Micah 6:8 calls to us as Christians to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly. The LWR Coffee Project helps Lutherans answer that call by righting the injustices faces by small-scale farmers around the world. The LWR Coffee Project, a partnership with Equal Exchange, bridges the gap between your church and the communities in which LWR works. By using Fair Trade coffee in your churches and homes, Lutherans guarantees that farmers will earn the income they need to feed their families, educate their children, seek medical care and improve their communities. The LWR Coffee Project ensures that more of the money you spend on coffee reaches the farmers who actually grow it. Fair Trade coffee is a simple solution that means the difference quite literally between surviving and not surviving for small-scale coffee farmers. 6

We're reading Walking the Bible: A Journey By Land Through the Five Books of Moses, by Bruce Feiler, and for this meeting we'll read and discuss through Book III (the third section-through p.273 in most editions.) New readers Heavenly Hell Raisers Heavenly Hell Raisers are going to the SRJC Planetarium on Sunday, March 21 to see Mars to Saturn, Cancer to Virgo. Show time is 1:30 p.m. And, if you desire, we might even go for some pie afterwards. Landscape Task Force Now that you have seen the exciting plans for landscaping around the patio, feel free to join this task force to see our dream become a reality. Contact Jean Harrison at or ecosave@sonic.net if you are interested. The first meeting will be scheduled soon. TLC Group News Sanctuary Task Force The first meeting of the Sanctuary Task Force is set for Sunday, March 7 at noon in the Sanctuary. All are welcome to attend. TLC Men's Group For the month of March the TLC Men's Group will join others for the mid week Lenten soup supper and service. They will return to their regular formats in April. Adult Forums If you are interested in presenting an Adult Forum after Church one Sunday, please contact Jean Harrison at or ecosave@sonic.net. Our goal is to present a monthly Forum for high school students and adults with different people doing the presentations on a variety of different subjects. Prayers & Squares Prayers & Squares is an interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of a hand-tied quilt with the gift of prayer for someone in need. The essence of this ministry is in the prayers offered for the recipient; it is not about the quilts. Very simply, a prayer quilt is a quilt that is made with love and tied with prayers. Each knot tied into the quilt represents a prayer that is offered specifically for someone in need of those prayers. As the congregations or other groups, family, and friends gather, knots are tied onto the quilt representing prayers, love, and concern for the recipient. The Church Quilt Group would like to reach out to the Congregation and offer members opportunities to participate in this ministry. If you or one of your loved ones needs to be lifted up in prayer, please let us know by completing one of the Prayer Request Forms, found in the Narthex. Please put it in Diane Land s box. The Quilt Group will then contact you. If you have any questions, contact one of the Quilt Group members. Ask the Becker Family about the power of being wrapped in prayer. 8

Goal Goings On and Committee Activities T he goals that were presented at the Congregational meeting are in progress in our Committees. Here are the highlights: CCC: School Kits, Midweek Soup Suppers, Easter Brunch May is the month we are shooting for to complete the School kits we will be sending to Lutheran World Relief, where they will be distributed to children who experienced displacement by violence. We are still short. Check out the poster in the narthex to remind yourself of the items, watch for school specials on sale, and pick up: Construction paper (assorted colors). We need at least sheet bundles. Erasers. We need 20. Notebooks (70 or 120 pages). We need about 75. Pencil Sharpeners, about 25. Rulers, about 60. Scissors (blunt-end), 25. Our Quilters will be devoting their March meeting to cutting bags for the supplies. If you can help with this part of the project (have sewing scissors and have sewing machine), talk to Lorraine or Betty. They ll love to hear from you. There will be a box in the narthex during the month of March in which you may put your supplies when you bring them to church. Please give your receipts to Betty so that we can apply to Thrivent for matching funds. If you would like to contribute to the Thursday Midweek Lenten Soup Suppers, see the sign up sheet in the narthex. Education: Confirmation to Conclude It has been a bit of a struggle for Pastor to meet with our Confirmands recently. The goal is for them to complete the curriculum and set a date to affirm their baptisms. Finance: All For Vigor and Vigilance Our Finance folks are working hard on a goal to encourage every member to increase their giving. This takes accurate and understandable communication, scripture-centered education, and immense love for TLC. We are thankful that we have a small cushion to see us through these hard economic times with our increased mortgage payment, but the cushion is dwindling. 9 Mutual Ministry: Care and Prayer We received a commendation recently from Bishop Holmerud for having a Mutual Ministry Committee! This group meets monthly to give support to Pastor Jean, consider concerns of the congregation, and have a time of prayer for each other. Outreach and Evangelism: Recovery Worship and Website We are in the early stages of investigating the possibility of starting a worship service for people who are in recovery from addiction. Anyone who would like to be in on the beginning stages of a new ministry here at TLC is invited to contribute. Our website is one of our strongest outreach tools. In April, Jim will offer a forum for leaders and anyone interested that will offer instruction for how to get around the website and how to post information. Jim is also looking into setting up a blog on our website so that we can develop interaction and relationships with our web audience. Property: Ever Improving Many thanks go to former TLC member Mike Dungan and his able assistant Paul Feiertag. They donated the grueling work of rewiring so that we can install a garbage disposal in the church kitchen. If anyone would like to donate a garbage disposal, please contact Jan Loewen or Deb Ferronato. With all the wonderful rains, the weeds will be rampant. Thanks go to Bill Reed (maybe we should call him Bill Weed!) who has been working hard to gain control. Any time anyone has a hankering to weed, feel free Worship: Getting Ever Stronger In January, we held a Worship Assistants Training with Pastor Jean. You may have noticed that the Worship Assistants are taking a stronger role in leading worship. Last summer s theme From Fear To Hope To Faith was received well, so we are working once again on leaving the dictates of the Revised Common Lectionary and exploring scripture through theme for our summer worship services. This year, we are working with the Stewardship Committee to lift up vocations.
