Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4 The best way to resolve conflict is choosing to practice Philippians 2:3-4. Do we listen to others to discover insights and truth or quarrel and fight because selfish desires are battling within us? James 4:1-2. Immature Christians and immature people don t choose to have fair fights directed at resolving a conflict. They listen to decide what they want to say as opposed to hearing others out to discover a solution. They fall into the trap of continuous venting and make the problem much worse. Proverbs 18:2 says, Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their opinions. APRIL 1 Holy Land Trip Deposit Due 1 Zumba FLC 16 Easter Celebration

March 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 2 (Cont d from page 1) God s prescription for solving conflict will cut through all our selfish desires and ambitions. When we value others in humility, we become close enough to listen, clear enough to compromise and committed enough to selfcorrect. The solution is to listen with care and, prayerfully, respond in the other person s best interest. When we listen to others with our heart and our head in humility, we practice spiritual maturity. 1. Whoever wants to confront must call for a fair fight. 2. Before the time can be set, the one calling for a fair fight must summarize the nature of the issue. 3. The meeting must be scheduled. 4. When the fair fight time is reached, both parties agree to give their undivided attention (no phone, no distractions, etc.). 5. Round 1: You speak with no interruptions. Be careful to speak the truth in love as you understand it. 6. Round 2: The other person must articulate what you have said in their own words in a way that you confirm you have been heard heart and head engaged. 7. Round 3: The other person is then given the same freedom as you (as with #5). 8. Round 4: You articulate what the other person has said (as with #6). ISTEN IN THE NEXT ISSU E. Chris Colston is an Associate Minister of Friendship Baptist Church.

March 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 3 Blessed Assurance, which is a well-known Christian hymn, was written in 1873 by Fanny Crosby who was a blind hymn writer. It was told that Fanny Crosby was visiting her friend Phoebe Knapp who was having a large pipe organ installed in her home. Since the organ was incomplete, she started playing a new melody she had just composed on the piano. Mrs. Knapp then asked Ms. Crosby, What do you think the tune says? Without missing a beat Ms. Crosby s response was, Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine. The hymn appeared in the July 1873 issue of Palmers Guide to Holiness and Revival Miscellany, which is a magazine printed by Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Palmer of 14 Bible House, New York City. This publication helped to popularize the song which became one of the most beloved hymns of all time. This song reflects Fanny Crosby s walk of faith as expressed in Philippians 1:21 by the apostle Paul, For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain (KJV) and is also the interpretation of Hebrews 10:22, " Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water." (KJV) Verse 1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood. Refrain: This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. Verse 2 Perfect submission, perfect delight! Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels descending bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. (Refrain) Verse 3 Perfect submission, all is at rest! I in my Savior am happy and blessed, Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. (Refrain) Submitted by Hyacinth Chung Communications Ministry

March 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 4 Lift Ev ry Voice and Sing Each month, the Newsletter will include a moment in Black History. We are also looking for accomplishments, successes and testimonies of our own FBC family. This is your newsletter. If you would like to contribute, please your article (500 words or less) to the editor at: ptapp1052@gmail.com. Thank you! Many people are surprised to learn that "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was first written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson. It was performed for the first time by 500 school children in celebration of President Lincoln's Birthday on February 12, 1900, in Jacksonville, FL. The poem was set to music by Johnson's brother, John Rosamond Johnson, and soon adopted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as its official song. Today, Lift Every Voice and Sing is one of the most cherished songs of the African American Civil Rights Movement and is often referred to as the Black National Anthem. About James Weldon Johnson Born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1871, James Weldon Johnson s life was defined by a number of firsts. Educated at Atlanta University, he was the first African American to pass the bar in Florida during his tenure as principal of Stanton Elementary School, his Alma Mater. He also was the first African American author to treat Harlem and Atlanta as subjects in fiction in his genre-crossing novel The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man (1912). As a scholar of African American literature, Johnson edited The Book of American Negro Poetry (1922), the first anthology of African American poetry in English, and for decades a standard text in both English and African American Studies. A pioneering ethno-musicologist, Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson, his brother and fellow composer, compiled and edited The Book of Negro Spirituals (1925), the first of a twovolume collection of Black sacred songs framed by a jointly authored introduction that traces the genesis and significance of one of the earliest Black art forms in the Americas. Johnson also was the first African American poet to adapt the voice of the Black folk preacher to verse. These poems are gathered in his masterful collection of folk sermons in verse entitled God s Trombones (1927), one of three collections of verse by Johnson. A race man and an American with broad intellectual interests, Johnson also is the author of Black Manhattan (1930), a history of African American life and culture in New York, and Along This Way (1933), an autobiography. Johnson distinguished himself in civil rights, diplomacy, education, journalism, law, literature, and music. His many impressive achievements notwithstanding, his place in African American history and culture would be secure if he had composed only in 1900 with J. Rosamond Johnson Lift Ev ry Voice and Sing, a hymn officially adopted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and widely sung by African Americans as the Negro National Anthem. Admired for his able, judicious and creative approach to leadership in an era stained by virulent forms of racism, Johnson, fluent in Spanish and French, was the first African American to serve as the United States consul to Venezuela and Nicaragua. After his period of service in the consular corps, in 1915 Johnson joined the staff of the NAACP. Rising quickly through the leadership ranks, a year later he became the first African American to serve as field secretary and later as executive secretary of the NAACP. As executive secretary of the NAACP, Johnson organized in Manhattan the historic Silent March of 1917 (above) to protest the national crime of lynching. During his tenure as executive secretary

March 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 5 (Black History cont d) of the NAACP, Johnson also led a national campaign against lynching that garnered significant congressional support in the form of the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill of 1921, a bill that would have made lynching a national crime, but it failed to become law because of insufficient votes in the Senate. Other significant achievements during Johnson s tenure as head of the NAACP include the exposure of the brutality of the Marines during the United State s occupation of Haiti, and the national campaign to support the Houston Martyrs: the soldiers of the 24th U.S. Infantry sentenced to death or life imprisonment for the 1917 uprising in Houston, Texas. After retiring from his position as head of the NAACP in 1930, Johnson joined the faculty of Fisk University as the Adam K. Spence Professor of Creative Writing. In 1934 he accepted an appointment as Visiting Professor of Creative Writing at New York University, thus becoming the university s first African American faculty member. Johnson s productive and multi-faceted life ended tragically when he was killed in an automobile accident in the summer of 1938 while vacationing in Maine. Born in the south but a figure of national and international significance, Johnson s richly lived life marked by remarkable accomplishments, service and leadership merits its own living memorial. Emory s James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference is an intellectual project that seeks to capture and reflect the many artistic, scholastic and humanitarian achievements of Johnson by supporting research that focuses upon the ongoing quest for universal civil and human rights. The last Sunday of Black History month in February was celebrated during the 11:00 am Worship Service. The Children s Choir showed up and showed out. The talented little boy who played the piano gave us a beautiful rendition of To Be Young Gifted and Black and the vocal little boy who sang out blessed the whole congregation in song. Finally, it was truly a heartfelt sincere moment when the Pastor interrupted the Benediction and asked the congregation to stand and sing the Black National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing. What a wonderful way to end Black History Month! Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered; Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our star is cast. Lift every voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory won. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee. Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land. A Testament from Robert Cloud Communications Ministry

March 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 11 HEALTH MINISTRY Nutrition Data's Opinion Nutrition Data awards foods 0 to 5 stars in each of three categories, based on their nutrient density (ND Rating) and their satiating effect (Fullness Factor ). Foods that are both nutritious and filling are considered better choices for weight loss. Foods that are nutritious without being filling are considered better choices for healthy weight gain. Foods that have more essential nutrients per calorie are considered better choices for optimum health. Note: Lower ratings do not necessarily mean that the food should be avoided but that it might be best consumed in moderation. Likewise, high ratings do not guarantee a perfect food but indicate a food that is more likely to be a positive addition to your diet.

March 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 12 (Nutrition cont d) Nutrition Data also indicates whether a food is high or low in various nutrients, according to the dietary recommendations of the FDA. If a 200-Calorie serving provides... less than 2% of the Daily Value less than 5% of the Daily Value more than 20% of the Daily Value more than 40% of the Daily Value The food is considered to be... very low in that nutrient low in that nutrient high in that nutrient very high in that nutrient Because of the health risks associated with over consumption of saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium, high levels of these nutrients are reported as "Bad," while high levels of more essential nutrients are reported as "Good." Nutrition Data also provides reports if more than 20% of the calories in the food come from sugars or alcohol and if the food contains any trans fat. Nutrition Data's Opinion and ratings are editorial opinions of Nutrition Data, given without warranty, and are not intended to replace the advice of a nutritionist or health-care professional. No food is completely good or bad for you: Optimum nutrition depends on your individualized needs and the combined nutritional benefits of all foods that you consume. 13 March 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 13 WOMEN S MINISTRY Last month s meeting was held on February 11, 2017, just days before Valentine s Day. It was a labor of love. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. The room was filled with love and laughter as conversations flowed throughout. Making the event even more special was the fact that we celebrated our beloved sisters in Christ who were 75 years and older. As we gazed upon them, one would not have guessed the years each has lived. What can be said is that each is blessed and highly favored by the Lord for their countenance did not reflect their years. What could be seen was the humility and appreciation shown for the recognition as was expressed on their behalf by Shirley Price. Our celebration began with the invocation: scripture reading from 1 Cor. 13:1-8 by Paulette Tapp and prayer by Min. Debra Jones. Gerri Wright did a wonderful job serving as Mistress of Ceremonies, and we were serenaded in song by two of our anointed sisters, Cynthia Urquhart and Veronica Gamble. They moved us from Amazing Grace to I Love to Praise Him and, with our hands lifted up and mouths filled with praise, we did just that. All of this was in preparation for Words of Inspiration from our beloved sister, Debra Bowens, our Pastor s beloved wife who was affectionately presented by Rhoda Green. Sis. Debbie, as we call her, began by sharing a biographical account of St. Valentine, the patron saint of lovers. Her topic for the morning was Love. It was thorough; it was intense and it was enjoyed by all. Two points captured included: 1) Love is our primary language, and 2) We should love much because we are loved. Sis. Debbie ended with 1 Cor. 13:13, Now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three but the greatest of these is charity. Much love went out to Sis. Debbie for her faithfulness and conviction!

March 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 14 (Women s Ministry cont d) Next came our spiritual dessert! Kimberly Rogers saturated us with a liturgical rendition of I Won t Complain. What an awesome morning we had; but it didn t stop there because we were blessed with a delectable lunch and more opportunity to fellowship. Heartfelt thanks goes out to Min. Roslyn Long for rendering grace before we feasted on those tasty treats, and much love to the ladies who brought dishes and to our dedicated kitchen helpers who labored in love throughout the morning to make sure that the physical food was as delicious as the spiritual food. It s important to note that we are preparing a trip to the Holy Land Experience in Orlando in November. If interested, your first deposit is due by April 1. The weekly bulletin will provide further details. Please respond immediately as seating is limited. Now, let s end by expressing heartfelt love and appreciation to those four new attendees who took time out of their busy mornings to share in this wonderful time of celebration.
