It is the enticing or inducement to yield to the lust of the flesh. James 1:14. To put to trial for proof. After one becomes a Christian, he has the same desires and temptations facing him that he had before. He does not receive a second blessing, as some may claim, to remove the temptation from him. It is a trial or testing of one s faith and loyalty to God. Read James 1:12; Job 1:6-2:10. Note the temptations put before Christ. Read Matthew 4: Vacation Bible School 16 Father s Day 4 Independence Day Church - Office Closed 28 Annual Back-to-School Event

2 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 2 Yield Not to Temptation If the child of God resists temptation, by God s grace, that victory will tend to strengthen his spiritual fiber, and each victory will bring with it the power to win new and greater victories. The slippery slope of sin works in the opposite way. When we succumb to temptation, it becomes easily to fall the next time. One day in 1868, these ideas impressed themselves upon the mind of composer Horatio Richmond Palmer. Dr. Palmer was the author of several books on the technical aspects of music, and an editor of a number of hymn books. At the moment, he was working at his desk on an exercise in musical theory. Perhaps it was the concept that all learning requires discipline that got him thinking. That is certainly true of mastering the art of making music. But Palmer s mind turned quickly in another direction. What of dealing with the temptation to sin? In a sudden burst of inspiration, Horatio Palmer set these truths to music. He says, I was at work on the dry subject of theory when the complete idea flashed upon me. I laid aside the theoretical work and hurriedly penned both words and music as fast as I could write them. The result was a song called Yield Not to Temptation, later published in the National Sunday School Teachers Magazine. Source: Submitted by Paulette Tapp Newsletter Editor

3 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 3 INSPIRATION FROM THE PSALMS Written By Evangelist Deloris Williams WHEN YOU FEEL FRAYED REMEMBER Psalm 105:26 KJV He sent Moses His servant; and Aaron who he had chosen. THE SIGNIFICANCE: This psalm opens up as every event in the book of life with its main encore. That which is always the vital statistics and scope that the Sovereign GOD, and Creator, is going to set forth his glory with subjects of his own clay matter (called mortals), who in the womb was (set aside), chosen and acting through the power of his spirit to set those he love and those in deep moans among his beloved humanity free! THE OBSERVATION: The stage is set for a dramatic event, and a hard place, and always a solemn call for his chosen to move when He calls and to become stirred up to serve Him by faith and without murmur (as Moses tried several times as though his maker didn t know every weak point or strong point about him like many of us today who suffer from an identity crisis). Humans must understand that the Creator s love and faithfulness are never dependent upon us because he already knows us inside out! THE LAW FROM GOD S ALTER IN HEAVEN: In our brokenness reigns fires of mercy! His ULTIMATE CONCERN is that we accept Him as Trustworthy and an ULTIMATE FRIEND. Our pain, doubt or trials need not be wasted, but if we change our mind on how we react to problems, we can find that in every problem is an opportunity!!! MOSES POSITION OF LOW ESTEEM: Was it Moses thought he was not the right man in so many ways for the job God needed to have done. KJV Isaiah 40:29-31 reads: He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Do (YOU) really know who you are as a True Christian? INSPIRATION: Moses whole life had been prepared for this job. So God went to stirring the work in Moses. What did God see in Moses that Moses couldn t see in himself? What is in you that you may never know exists to be used for a miracle for the hurting, the mocked, the slandered and cruelty of the wicked evil ones hating truth in any form? Against TRUE SALT for the GLORY of GOD? Psalms 107:14 KJV He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. Are you listening in the midst of a burning bush situation?

4 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 4 (Inspiration from the Psalms cont d) THE MESMERIZING HIGHLIGHT: The Book of Exodus highlights God in his Sovereignty delivering his people of purpose and redemption from slavery as he is today reflecting the significance of the entrapment (plaguing) his mankind to take sin lightly. His Son s Cross is a (REAL WARNING), we need to stop coming to church and BE HIS CHURCH, an attraction of redemptive history. Yet before the cross, and after the cross, mankind yet needs a spiritual exodus from Sin... Sometimes we are (the burning bush) in a desert storm of mental slavery of pleasure and the belief that we can tolerate a little sin, and get to heaven! FRAYED, BUT NOT CONSUMED: Frayed means to be worn spiritually, tattered, threadbare, unraveled, temperamentally full of woe as the Israelites were with Moses, worn out under the brutal rule of Pharaoh that they began to not trust Moses in their wilderness experience. They lost vision a two-million member freedom march in danger in the wilderness had GOD s navigation plan written in the heart and soul of Moses. They never used a deep freezer to keep their food, no freezer bags to keep food fresh, but manna from heaven! No underground wires to send a text message, no cell phone towers, just a man (ON FIRE), AND LISTENING TO GOD SPEAK THROUGH A BURNING BUSH!) What is your geographical location? Are you listening closely, are you spiritually wired for cable with a landline called faith? What challenge are you believing God for a miracle? In your wild wilderness of faith, ask yourself, who am I? Am I honoring the Church the way I should? IN CONCLUSION: Elijah, John, Jesus, Paul and Ezekiel and many of the prophets headed to the wilderness. This article has multiple insights to glean from. But I leave you with a self-check to take a journey to Psalms 77:13-20 and let the Eternal wind maker guide you as the eagle s wisdom in a storm he stretches his wings and flies above the storm and glides until the storm is over. Cuddle with a mustard seed of faith and receive this psalm in peace. PLUG INTO THE POWER THAT COMMANDS THE STORMS Read Psalms 77:13-20 and look for your miracle!!

5 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 5 THREE KEYS TO THE SEED OF FAITH CAMPAIGN: 1. Recognize that God is your Source - Philippians 4:19 says, My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. God will use many different instruments to supply our needs but He alone is the Source, and He alone cannot fail. 2. Give first, so that it may be given back to you - Luke 6:38 says, Give, and it will be given to you. We must first plant a Seed of Faith so that God can multiply it back to meet our needs. Jesus is talking about giving in the deepest sense of the word the giving of ourselves to God. This includes anything we can give: love, time, patience, forgiveness, finances, and our prayers. Please note that our giving reflects our Trust in God. 3. Expect a miracle - Mark 11:24 says, Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. The moment we ask God for something the moment we do our part and plant our Seed of Faith we should believe God that the answer is on its way. It s important to expect our miracle so we can recognize it and reach out to take it when it comes. How This Campaign Will Work: Over the next 78 weeks, we are asking every member and friends to sow a seed of $26 over and above your tithes and offerings. If you are not able to give $26, give what you can, and if you are able to give more than $26, please do so. If you are blessed to give $260 or $2,600 per week, be obedient to God. We are asking you to please utilize the blue envelopes located on the back of the pews. Using the blue envelopes will help our Finance Ministry greatly. This allows them to tract and account for your seed offerings. So please each Sunday for 78 weeks, give God something to work with. No matter how little you think you have, sow it in Joy and in Faith, knowing you are Sowing Seeds so you, your family, our church, each ministry and our community may reap miracles from the seeds that are sown. Remember God is Our Source Give so that it can be Given Back to You and Expect a Miracle! Thank you and God Bless!

6 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 6 Friendship Baptist Church celebrated its 70 th Church Anniversary on Thursday, May 24 th, 2018, at 7:00 pm. It was not an ordinary celebration. Members and friends turned back the hands of time to the 1970s with some of the best gospel tunes of that time. The theme for the celebration was the Oldies 70s. Strutting their 70s apparel, many who came to celebrate this milestone in the history of our church were decked out in Dashikis, head bands, overblown afros (few had afro picks sticking from different ends of their afros) and to top it all, there were bell bottoms and platform shoes! Now, I have never seen bell bottoms that flared at the knees with pleats running down to the ankle; some flared at the knees and some started from mid-calf. Living a very sheltered life in the Islands, I never had much exposure to this type of dress I can only imagine Woodstock without the Pot. The lesson theme for the night was Praises, Blessings and Salvation. Our Deacons led the devotion and scripture was read from Mark 14:1-4. Devotion ended in a very spirited rendition of Satan We re Gonna Tear Your Kingdom Down before turning the service over to Pastor Ronald Bowens. The call to worship was from Psalms 122 read by Rev. Stanley Williams. The congregational hymn was I Feel No Ways Tired and then Pastor Bowens welcomed the visitors and parishioners. Pastor led the choir in singing God Has Smiled on Me, and then Mother Gerald Baker read the church history, which was very informative and full of dates so we could see from where God brought us from. The FBC Choir blessed us with two songs, What a Fellowship, What a Joy Divine and God is my Protection. Now I must tell you the choir had the anointing on them and in them! The songs were so spirit filled and spine tingling; we knew God s presence had touched down on Friendship. Pastor Bowens introduced the speaker of the hour, Rev. Rodney Lackey of Antioch Baptist Church in Gainesville, as their choir took the stand and rendered two selections, I m Looking for a Miracle and My Alleluia Belongs to You.

7 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 7 (Church Celebration cont d) The sermon was taken from Leviticus 24:1-4, entitled Separated for the Work. As Rev. Lackey expounded on the Word, he reminded us that God commanded the people of Israel to be holy and separated in all facets of their lives from the world. Their doings/actions should be for God s pleasure pleasing to Him. The Israelites were no ordinary folks; they belonged to Jehovah God, set apart to make a difference for God. Our walk with God should speak for our lives. Most people are in the church, but the church is not in them. As Christians, we should have deep moral roots per God s regulations. We should be just and moral people if we belong to God. Leaders should carry themselves well and live a life that is pleasing to God, subject to the law in order to lead the people. It is okay to be different as long as you are making a difference for God. Holiness means to be consecrated and dedicated to God. Mount Sinai was holy because God s presence was there as He spoke with Moses and gave him the Ten Commandments on that Holy Mount. Israel was God s prized possession. In verse 2, God commanded the children of Israel to bring the pure oil from the olive that is beaten for light, to cause the lamps to burn continually. For the church to grow and move, we must have: 1. Partnership in Service For the Priest to keep the lamp burning, they must have the supply of oil that will come from the people. People are in the church and are falling short on their assignments because they are busy watching what others are doing. They fall short on their duties because they feel they are doing more than others who are not pulling their weight in the church. Do your assignment as unto God, because we can never out do God. 2. Purity in Service Bring to God pure oil. Enter the sanctuary with your best praise. Come to God bearing your all in a clean vessel. God wants your best and He rewards real folks. Your praise is your action of your attitude. The olive is beaten for more oil, it s beaten to get the most out of it. We are sometimes beaten by trials and tribulations. God uses these to build character in us, to get us out of our comfort zones so He can get the best from us. 3. Perpetuity in Service A constant supply or flow of oil keeps the lamps burning. The lamp represents the Presence of God. We should be giving unceasing praises to God. If we run out of oil, the anointing will stop flowing; in the same way, if we cut back on our praises or stop praising God, then the blessings will dry up. When praises go up, the blessings will come down. Make up your mind to serve God wholeheartedly, in Spirit and in Truth. The sermon ended with Rev. Lackey singing Trouble in My Way, Gotta Cry Sometimes. After Pastor Bowen s response, Rev. Lackey did the benediction. It was a great reflection of the 70s and the message took us back to the Old Testament of God s laws. 12 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 12 FBC Family Life Center Gym and Fitness Center Hours Monday-Friday Mornings 9:00 am-12:00 pm Tuesday Evenings 4:00pm 8:00pm Nutrition is important for fitness. Eating a well-balanced diet can help you get the calories and nutrients you need to fuel your daily activities, including regular exercise. When it comes to eating foods to fuel your exercise performance, it s not as simple as choosing vegetables over doughnuts. You need to get the right types of food at the right times of the day. Learn about the importance of healthy breakfasts, workout snacks, and meal plans. Get off to a good start. Your first meal of the day is an important one. According to an article published in Harvard Health Letter, eating breakfast regularly has been linked to a lower risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Starting your day with a healthy meal can help replenish your blood sugar, which your body needs to power your muscles and brain. Eating a healthy breakfast is especially important on days when exercise is on your agenda. Skipping breakfast can leave you feeling lightheaded or lethargic while you re working out. Choosing the right kind of breakfast is crucial. Too many people rely on simple carbohydrates to start their day. But a plain white bagel or doughnut won t keep you feeling full for long. In comparison, a fiber- and protein-rich breakfast may fend off hunger pangs for longer and provide the energy you need to keep your exercise going. Follow these tips:: Instead of eating sugarladen cereals made from refined grains, try oatmeal, oat bran, or other whole-grain cereals that are high in fiber. Then, throw in some protein, such as milk, yogurt, or chopped nuts. If you re making pancakes or waffles, replace some of the all-purpose flour with whole-grain options. Then, stir some cottage cheese into the batter. If you prefer toast, choose whole-grain bread. Then pair it with an egg, peanut butter, or another protein source. Count on the right carbohydrates. Thanks to low-carb fad diets, carbohydrates have gotten a bad rap. But carbohydrates are your body s main source of energy. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 45 to 65 percent of your total daily calories should come from carbohydrates. This is especially true if you exercise. Choosing the right kind of carbohydrates is important. Too many people rely on the simple carbs found in sweets and processed foods. Instead, you should focus on eating the complex carbs found in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans. Whole grains have more staying power than refined grains because you digest them more slowly. They can help you feel full for longer and fuel your body throughout the day. They can also help stabilize your blood sugar levels. Finally, these quality grains have the vitamins and minerals you need to keep your body running at its best. Pack protein into your snacks and meals. Protein is needed to help keep your body growing, maintained, and repaired. For example, the University of Rochester Medical Center reports that red blood cells die after about 120 days. Protein is also essential for building and repairing muscles, helping you enjoy the benefits of your workout. It can be a source of energy when carbohydrates are in short supply, but it s not a major source of fuel during exercise you re well-fed. Adults need to eat about 0.8 grams of protein per day for every kilogram of their body weight, reports Harvard Health Blog. That s equal to about 0.36 grams of protein for every pound of body weight. Exercisers and older people may need even more. That protein can come from: poultry, such as chicken and turkey; red meat, such as beef and lamb; fish, such as salmon and tuna; dairy, such as milk and yogurt; legumes, such as beans and lentils; eggs. For the healthiest options, choose lean proteins that are low in saturated and trans fats. Limit the amount of red meat and processed meats that you eat. Boost your fruit and vegetable intake. Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of natural fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other compounds that your body needs to function properly. They re also low in calories and fat. Aim to fill half your plate with fruits and veggies at every meal, recommends the United States Department of Agriculture. Try to eat the rainbow by choosing fruits and veggies of different colors. This will help you enjoy the full range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that the produce aisle has to offer. Every time you go to the grocery store, consider choosing a new fruit or vegetable to try. For snacks, keep dried fruits in your workout bag and raw veggies in the fridge. Choose healthy fats. Unsaturated fats may help reduce inflammation, and they help provide calories. While fat is a primary fuel for aerobic exercise, we have plenty stored in the body to fuel even the longest workouts. However, getting healthy unsaturated fats help to provide essential fatty acids and calories to keep you moving. Healthy options include: nuts, seeds, avocados, olives, oils, such as olive oil or coconut oil. Fuel up before exercise. When it comes to fueling up before or after a workout, it s important to achieve the right balance of carbs and protein. Pre-workout snacks that combine carbohydrates with protein can make you feel more energized than junk foods made from simple sugars and lots of fat. Consider stocking your workout bag and refrigerator with some of these simple snacks: bananas, berries, grapes, oranges, nuts, nut butter, whole-grain crackers or a slice of whole-grain bread. 20 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 20 MEN S MINISTRY Bro. Brandon Owens, Ministry Leader On Saturday, June 2 nd, the FBC Men's Ministry hosted a Father and Son Cookout at WP Jones Memorial Park in Duluth. Approximately 70 men and young men gathered to enjoy a little fun in the sun while fellowshipping and embodying the ministry s model scripture: As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17. The event started at 9:00 am and concluded around 1:00 pm. Bros. Dexter and Tony showcased their skills on the BBQ grills and fish fryer for the event. While the entrees were being prepared, the remaining members and their sons arrived bringing various other items. The teens enjoyed tossing the football, while the younger kids played on the playground. Some of the men enjoyed a friendly, but competitive, game of Tailgate Bean Bag Toss while others enjoyed listening to gospel music under the pavilion and building relationships. It was a marvelous sight to see so many dedicated brothers representing Friendship Baptist Church of Duluth while honoring God. Pastor Bowens was in attendance and was able to enjoy the food and fellowship. He blessed the food and mingled with many of the members. Men s Ministry President Brandon Owens made a few announcements and thanked all in attendance for participating in the cookout. A special acknowledgement was made in honor of the late Shirley Harris Johnson and Kathy Callaway for helping to reserve the location for the Men s Ministry. 23 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 23 WOMEN S MINISTRY Sis. Vickie Chambers, Ministry Leader On Saturday, May 12th, 8:45am-11:15am, the Women's Ministry showed appreciation and honor to all the mothers (whether a foster mom, mentor mom or spiritual mom). It was a morning filled with prayer, praise, dance and worship! I reminded the ladies that during this Mother s Day weekend to lift up our sisters who may have lost their mothers and to remember that Jesus can be a mother to the motherless. The Drama Ministry, led by Cynthia Urquhart, presented a skit based on what the mothers of the different men in the Bible, like Samuel and Noah and others, would have been like? Yvette Leverett, Erichka Rogers, Gail Lewis and Tyra Turner were the presenters. Minister Nicole Walker facilitated the Mother's Day event. Evg. Kimberly Rogers and Sis. Kelly Wilson ministered through music and dance. Mother Dorothy Blagmon equipped us women with a word in being" A Christian Mother". Here are a few pointers from her message: In Genesis 3:20, we discussed Eve being the first mother. She was the mother of all living. As mothers, we want to raise our children to follow God. The Holy Spirit will lead and guide us. We must love our children and discipline them at the same time. Titus 2:4 reminds us to love our children. Psalms 78:5-6 tells us to train up our children. Most importantly, a Christian mother should share the good news of Jesus Christ and the plan of salvation to her children. God expects a Christian mother to have certain characteristics. To be a wise mother and spend time filling herself up with the nourishment of God's word. Proverbs 1:8-9 tells us that God expects a Christian mother to follow Him and rely on His promises. Here are two other scriptures to research: 2 Peter 1:3 and Ephesians 6:4.

But your hardships are raw materials in the hands of a mighty God who wants to work in your life for good. This study is anchored in the scriptural truth that God disciplines all of His children, using trials to train you for your good and for His purposes.

30 June 2018 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 30 National Black Anthem Lift every voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory won. Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered; Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee. Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.
