The disciples of Friendship Baptist Church, Duluth, celebrated 33 years under the divine leadership of Rev. Ronald L. Bowens with songs of praise to our God and sweet fellowship with one another. This day of appreciation began at the 7:30 am service with Pastor Bowens escorted by Sis. LaRahn Waldon and Sis. Debbie Bowens escorted by Bro. Ben Waldon to the recording of Marvin Sapp s Never Would Have Made It. The second service escorts were Sis. Debbie Chambers and Bro. Terry Chambers. We were delighted with words of inspiration from young master Orlando Oldham, Jr., for the first service and Sister Kelly Wilson for second service. The words from both speakers were inspiring not only for Pastor but the entire congregation. Young brother Oldham, Jr., presented us with a video from his baptism and made us aware that Pastor Bowens knew him before he was born. Sis. Kelly included in her presentation a poem which she had written from her heart to express the sincere appreciation for everything Pastor Bowens has meant to her as a believer. May the Lord continue to bless us all as we bless Pastor Bowens, Sister Debbie and the entire Bowens family. For we know that every good gift and every perfect gift comes from above.
October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 2 (Pastor Anniversary cont d) Our first service preacher of the hour was Rev. Douglas T. Jackson of Hillsboro Baptist Church, N. High Shoals, GA. His message for the morning was He Keeps on Blessing Me and the scripture text was 1 Peter 1:3-4. Our second service preacher of the hour was Rev. Jonathan Jones of Takoma Park Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. Rev. Jones sermon title was Addition by Subtraction and his scripture text was from John 3:30. What a time, what a time had in the Lord! The celebration of the day culminated with a full course dinner and dessert in the family life center for everyone who so willingly came to express their love for Pastor. It was a joyous occasion filled with Love, Joy and Gladness. Many thanks are in order to the Shepherd s Care Ministry servants and those that always help to make these special events honorable to our Lord and Savior. You all were great and went far and above all expectations. Mary Blackburn, Servant Leader Shepherd s Care Ministry with songs of praise to our God

October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 8 HYMN OF THE MONTH Joseph M. Scriven What a Friend We Have in Jesus was originally written as a poem in 1855 by Joseph M. Scriven to comfort his mother who was terribly ill and who was living in Ireland while he was in Canada. Scriven was born in 1819 of prosperous parents in Bainbridge, Down County, Ireland. He graduated with a degree from Trinity College in Dublin in In 1843, the night before he was to be married, his fiancée accidentally drowned. In 1845, at the age of 25, he left his native Ireland and migrated to Canada. The poem was then titled, Pray without Ceasing and was published anonymously, it only received full credits in the 1880s. In 1868, Charles Crozat Converse composed a tune for it and William Bolcom composed the setting of the hymn. Missionaries took this hymn abroad where people sang it in many versions with different lyrics in multiple languages. Scriven did not have any intentions nor dream that his poem would be for publication in the newspaper and later becoming a favorite hymn among the millions of Christians around the world. In 1857, in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, he again fell in love and was due to be married, but in August 1860, his fiancée suddenly fell ill of pneumonia and died. In his grief, he then devoted the rest of his life to tutoring, preaching and helping others. Joseph Scriven died on August 10, His tale would hardly seem to warrant a page in church history were it not for one fact: he is the man who wrote a hymn that must rank among the 10 best-known and most-beloved of all time, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." The Song What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer. O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful? Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness Take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy-laden? Cumbered with a load of care Precious Savior, still our refuge Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer In His arms He ll take and shield thee Thou wilt find a solace there.
October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 9 INSPIRATION FROM THE PSALMS Written By Evangelist Deloris Williams PSALMS 121 (KJV) The Author is (David) Psalm 121 (KJV) I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil, he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even evermore. The treasury of David s life reflected in his psalms paints scriptural word pictures to the reader s conscience of his constant recurrences of his bemoaned encounters with trials of life. David s journey is not incidental as he journeyed destinies chosen by JEHOVAH. It is a soldier's song, a traveler s rest and hope as well as a hymn to us today as we encounter circumstances as we journey from dust to dawn, our darkest mile of spiritual hill after hill. David is speaking from the past to us in the present through this psalm itself which rises to the greatest elevation of restful confidence in GOD as his Guardian, and then to us today weathering storm after storm, spiritual hills, or a traveling individual of daily procession towards JEHOVAH S destiny for us as his servants, providers, evangelist, writers, students, church clergy, ministries, homemakers, parents, etc. We are his people under his Sovereign care. David s spiritual reality in this Psalm is a penned confession from a sacred place in his heart. His virtue of trust is a song of degree and its dialogue is assurance to us, whether he is at the foothills of mountains and hills, or his pilgrimage of a caravan in the vicinity of hills on the way to Jerusalem, or facing the hills in a dark cave from a maniacal King Saul who was dead-set on killing him. David saw his life flash before his eyes; his life involved spiritual hills and mountains in the natural aspect of living. He remembered moving from one hill to another, from one cave to another, hiding in the back of a cave while the king slept in the front, working his way around one side of the mountain while the king and his army marched around the other side. David knew he had a Sovereign Guardian that never sleeps. David knew that the one of all Creation that watched over Israel was his Assurance and would not let his feet slip. Regardless of the valley or the altitude, David knew that at the base of the hill, his spiritual or natural mountain, he would lift up his eyes toward the hills which cometh his help. He knew the hills or mountains themselves would not yield him spiritual power; but he looked upward towards the hill and mountain maker!!
October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 10 (Inspiration from Psalms cont d) David knew the importance and soundness in his faith. He knew his authority and strength came from the Maker of heaven and earth, the One True Creator of All Creation. David s soul began to recite and penned the silence, the sorrow, yet the tranquil beauty of this Psalm under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. David was full of the WORD and Faith. Verse 1 - Acted like a thermal inward furnace He lifted his eyes toward Heaven Verse 2 - His heart indicted the reality of his Help Verse 3 - His soul boasted its confession trusting in his Creator Verse 4 - He knew who the hills belonged to, spiritual hills or in the natural Verse 5 - David s Shade was the promise of his All Mighty. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1 KJV) Verse 6 - David knew No weapon formed against him would prosper against him (Isaiah 54:17 KJV) Verse 7 - David meditated day and night without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) Verse 8 - David s prayer was that his Creator would never forsake him Forsake me not, O LORD: O my GOD, be not far from me. (Psalms 38:21) Like David, we all are born with a purpose. At some point, self-promotion must die. Our goal is to live for our Creator who has made the hills and mountains. Their structure is a reminder that we have a Sovereign hill and mountain maker. He alone can make mountains highways. And I will make all my mountains a way and my highways shall be exalted. Isaiah 49:11 KJV David was a man after GOD s own heart David s thirst to please GOD opened a Sovereign Creator s heart GOD made a Covenant with David David was chosen of his Creator David impressed GOD by seeking his potential GOD s way David knew who his Creator was, and what he was able to do. He also knew from experience that The Creator would NOT break his own Covenants. David did NOT suffer from an IDENTITY CRISIS He desired to know GOD He Revered, Obeyed, had a Holy Fear and Loved GOD David understood GOD s Timing, GOD s Way, GOD s Place, GOD s Wisdom David would not touch Saul because he knew Saul still was anointed by GOD, and to do any harm to Saul meant that David would answer to a higher Authority Read 2 Samuel 7:12 17
October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 11 (Inspiration from Psalms cont d) Romans 8:28 (KJV) - And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. The reason God's covenants with Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David ought to increase the joy of our faith is that in all of them the main point is that God exerts all his omnipotence and all his omniscience to do good to his people, and we are that people if we follow Christ in the obedience of faith. The most practical truths that any Christian should know is that God is all-powerful, all-wise, and all for you. Nothing will have a more important practical impact on the way you use your money, spend your leisure, pursue your vocation, rear children, deal with conflict, or handle anxiety. Heartfelt confidence that the sovereign God is working everything together for your good out of sheer grace affects every area of our lives. The element of life has a way of dodging in and out of commitments. Commitment can be spelled hills, mountains, and tough terrains! We must ask ourselves what are my hills trying to tell me? Where are they leading me? Do I try to find my own significance, or do I resolve hills my way or GOD s way? Now David had an impressive Resume with GOD, what does mine look like? Do I respect the WORD? How would I deal with someone trying to kill me with tongues so sharp that they split rocks? Saul literally would have killed David had David (NOT) fled from him. Am I really living GODLY, and what am I conveying to someone else looking for a model of Christ? GOD has his own (INTERVENTION PLAN). Are we allowing GOD s Covenants to be a hill crushing, mountain moving force in our lives? If not, know this: While you are a legal traveler on this road towards eternity, I would recommend this traveler s song of David who overcame in the darkest hours of his life. He overcame by prophetic passage reaching like an extended telescope into events of his life, and by obedience and faith these most powerful rudiments called spiritual hills and mountains started collapsing downward. What looked like mountains became roadways so that the near and distant events worked out for his good against Saul spirits and more! The only demolition assurance against hills and mountains whether spiritual or in the natural is GOD s will, GOD s Way, and in GOD s Time. Let us sing together in this massive assembly in unison and sincerity and Worship GOD in Spirit and Truth. I will lift my eyes unto the hills for which cometh my help, at the Hill and Mountain Maker! Let us Worship in Spirit and Truth and watch as a miraculous construction turns what was meant to be destruction into a beautiful highway to heaven!
October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 12 HEALTH MINISTRY Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it s found and treated early. A mammogram the screening test for breast cancer can help find breast cancer early when it s easier to treat. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. Make a difference! Spread the word about mammograms and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY GUIDELINES FOR NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR CANCER PREVENTION Achieve and maintain a healthy weight throughout life. Be as lean as possible throughout life without being underweight. Avoid excess weight gain at all ages. For those who are overweight or obese, losing even a small amount of weight has health benefits and is a good place to start. Get regular physical activity and limit intake of high-calorie foods and drinks. Adopt a physically active lifestyle. Adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week, or an equivalent combination, preferably spread throughout the week. Children and adolescents should get at least one hour of moderate- or vigorous activity each day, with vigorous-intensity activity at least three days each week. Limit sedentary behavior such as sitting, lying down, watching television, and other forms of screen-based entertainment. Doing some physical activity above usual activities, no matter what the level of activity, can have many health benefits. Consume a healthy diet, with an emphasis on plant foods. Choose foods and beverages in amounts that help achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Limit consumption of processed meat and red meat. Eat at least 2½ cups of vegetables and fruits each day. Choose whole grains instead of refinedgrain products.
October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 13 SINGLES MINISTRY In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Singles Ministry joined the Beulah Lights Walking Team of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, located at 2340 Clifton Springs Road, Decatur, GA, for their 5th Annual Cancer Awareness Marathon/Walk held on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 7:45 a.m. on their church campus. It was an historic and health event honoring God, cancer survivors, and the legacy of loved ones who died of cancer. We had a fun time of walking and giving praises to our Lord and Savior. The walk lasted for approximately one hour. The Beulah Lights Walking Team was initially formed in 2005 to support their First Lady, Mrs. Glenda Black, by walking in the Susan Komen 3-Day, 60-Mile Breast Cancer Walk. The scripture We walk by faith, not by sight was and still is their guiding principle. The team consists of witnessing, walking women of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church. Since successfully completing the 3-Day walk for two years, the team has continued to do community walks in support of many worthwhile causes including American Heart Association, Junior Diabetes Association, Kidney Foundation, American Cancer Society, South DeKalb Hope and Health, and many others. The team began the Marathon walk around the Beulah campus to provide a community focus on breast cancer awareness. Front Row: Left-Right Trisha Dawson, Min. 14 October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 14 FBC OUTREACH MINISTRY The 8 th Annual Walk-A-Thon kicked off under clear blue crisp skies on the morning of September 16, The weather was pleasant and the Sound Ministry led by Darryl Greer kept us energized with rocking inspirational music. Registration tables opened at 7:30 a.m. and Pastor Bowens officially kicked off the event at 8.00 a.m. with prayer followed by opening remarks and welcome by Diana McGhee. Mother Gerald Baker gave a brief presentation about the history of The Hill the neighborhood around the church that comprised the route, and that was followed with a warm-up stretch. Approximately 80 walkers completed the course. This year the Walk-A-Thon added a fair for the FBC Ministries along with a Car Wash, Fish Fry and Burger/Hot Dog barbeque sponsored by the Men s Ministry. The Walk-A-Thon was initially started to raise funds for international Outreach, but then morphed into raising funds for all our Outreach projects. Some of those projects include funds for an adopted orphanage in Liberia, an orphanage in Haiti, school fees for a church school in Liberia, and a refrigerated truck for our local food distribution project here at FBC. This year, we set a stretch goal of $10,000. Based on initial reports, it appears that the Walk- A-Thon will raise approximately $6,000 this year. The Walk-A-Thon weekend was capped with a celebration of Outreach Sunday on September 17 th at the 11:00 a.m. service. Approximately 45 Outreach Ministry members processed into the church to an upbeat reggae gospel song, and members were inspired by Pastor Bowens message for the day Stop, Stoop, Save. The Outreach Ministry sincerely appreciated the participation and support of the Ministries and all FBC members and friends, including the efforts of the FBC Youth Ministry with the car wash and water handed out along the route. Special thanks to the co-chairs of the Walk-a-Thon, Catherine Stafford and Lakeesha Chesley, supported by Minister Floyd Williams, Louie Malone and Angela Campbell. Special thanks also to Deacon Woodrow Williams (the Deacon for the Outreach Ministry) who enjoyed transporting people along the route in golf cart. We hope you will join us on September 15 th, 2018, for our next Walk-A-Thon and Outreach Sunday weekend! If you would like more information about the Outreach Ministry, please contact Diana McGhee at (404) or by at dianaymcghee@bellsouth.net. 23 October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 23 WOMEN S MINISTRY SEPTEMBER 9, 2017 It was that time again -- 2 nd Saturday of the month, a morning filled with blue skies and bright sunshine; a morning that provided another opportunity for the women of Friendship to gather together in prayer, praise and exhortation. By now, most of you know that we have begun a study series on The Full Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer. Each month, our goal is to share with you a brief synopsis so that you may glean some of what we ve learned. Before providing this summary, we also want to share some of the other important events which took place during our assembly. For those who were hungry, we fed them; for those who were thirsty, we provided drinks; for those who desired to cry out on behalf of loved ones, friends, neighbors, co-workers and even enemies, Min. Nicole Walker encouraged all to do so. As is our custom, we acknowledged those ladies who were celebrating birthdays and anniversaries during the month of September as well as those who were attending the fellowship for the first time. Birthdays included Vernell Flood, Debra Green, Karen Omar, Michele Seals and Carolyn Swarptue. We wished each sister many more years of life, good health and happiness. Wedding anniversaries were celebrated by Shirley Price (55 years), Amber Hawkins (13 years) and Min. Barbara Williams (24 years). Our love and prayers are with them as they continue to grow together with their spouse in the wisdom and knowledge of our Lord. We had three first time guests, two of whom were celebrating birthdays and or anniversaries and have been included above. Also, visiting was Tan Grant. Each was excited to take part in our activities. Last, but not least, Evangelist Kimberly Rogers blessed us with a moving liturgical expression of worship. The Belt of Truth The time had come for our study. The women were instructed to head over to the Family Life Center to view a video presentation by Priscilla Shirer. The video focused on the belt of truth referenced in Ephesians 6:14. It s true that this writer could provide a lengthy article about what was learned, but it would not compare to actually being there to hear and learn for yourself. Just to give you a taste, a few points are noted below: The armor begins with the truth. Satan is studying you and His attacks are personalized Deception is a disguise of the enemy You can t keep good, spiritual health without girding your loins with truth. In other words, restrain yourself in the Word of God. The belt is needed to strengthen your core. It provides stability. Scripture references for the points above included: John 8:44; Proverbs 3:5-6; Ephesians 5:13; 2 Corinthians 11:14 and Joshua 24:15. (These verses have been included in hopes of encouraging you to research them.)
October 2017 Friendship Baptist Church A Purpose-Driven Church Page 24 (Women s Ministry cont d) After the video, we headed back to the Fellowship Hall. Sis. Vickie Chambers, our Ministry Leader, pointed out the following: The belt is not one of leather but truth which is found in the Word. (Jn. 17:17) Without the knowledge of the truth of scripture, we re easy prey for the enemy. We must combat error with truth lest we are distracted, destroyed or defeated. The belt reveals the way of salvation. (Acts 16:31) It teaches about life and death. (from Genesis to Revelation) It reveals our true sinful nature before God. (Rm. 3:23) It reveals the final destiny of the lost. (Ps. 9:17) What we do and say is as important as what we do not. We must choose to be holy. Accountability requires truth and honesty. (Matt. 18:15-20) The belt of truth requires knowing Jesus and the Word; It requires not just knowing but living the Word. Jesus is the living Word. (Jn. 1:1) Jesus lived the truth. (Heb. 4:15) We must work God s word. Don t be a hypocrite. Keep your motives pure, honest, free from malice and wickedness toward others. Live in the truths of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23) Seek to follow God with integrity. (Jn. 14:17-18) The study ended with the women breaking out into groups to discuss and answer questions provided by Sis. Vickie; after which, we shared our responses. At this point, the women have completed Week 2 of the study on the Full Armor of God. Through these articles, we attempt to provide as much detail as possible in the hope of encouraging many more sisters to come out and learn with us. However, we do understand if you re not able. Whatever the situation, it s our prayer that all of our readers have been enlightened by the facts presented. In closing, the Ministry is praying that the Walk around the Hill is a fun-filled, successful walk for all who participated. We also want to wish Pastor Ronald L. Bowens a happy Pastoral Anniversary, and we pray that he will continue to be steadfast, unmovable always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that his labor is not in vain in the Lord. Until next month, God s peace and blessings to all! And, for those who have the book, please read Week 3 The Breastplate of Righteousness. For those who don t don t fret. As has been said, we want you to join us as well. This ministry desires that everyone reaps the benefit of this study and grows in the wisdom and knowledge of our Lord and His truth.
