She is blind but still enjoys singing and performing on her accordion and entertaining audiences. More details to come. Stewardship of God s Earth By Jim Tocko October can be a month of surpassing beauty. The northern reaches of our state work their magic as long as you bring a jacket. The Mississippi River bluffs are breath taking and often require a sweater. Venture out on road trip and soak up the fall colors, bringing a feeling of peace and tranquility. Fall colors are never a given, but we hope that nature will out do itself this time. A gorgeous fall feels bestowed on us as a reward for all the bug bites we endured along with the rain and humidity this summer. The latter makes for good sweet corn. October is also the month of ripe apples sweet squash and football games under the lights. Gardeners clean up their wilted beds and attempt to extend the garden season by bringing home mum plants. No more weeding and watering. This month is one of mixed emotions, the season of good-byes. It is a passage to wondrous moments. Enjoy!
2 From the Pastor By Pastor Lowell Bolstad I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. I cannot do otherwise, here I stand, may God help me, Amen. Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms (1521), LW 32: This is Martin Luther s defining statement by which he is best remembered. Oct. 31, 2017, will mark the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, which is an opportunity for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) to bear witness to the hope and joy we have through Jesus Christ. Many people will be asking about the significance of what happened 500 years ago when Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses. This action started a dialogue that changed the way we receive and share the gospel which continues today. This anniversary is an opportunity to communicate the Lutheran Reformation s significance for faith and life in the 21st Century and the freedom we have in Christ that liberates us to joyfully serve our neighbors. I am offering Confirmation instruction at Strum and Elk Creek on the Small Catechism by Martin Luther with the title of Here We Stand. I offered Justified! 500 Years of Faith: a 5-Session Bible Study on Reformation Themes at Strum.at the Diet of Worms (1521), LW 32:112 13] We will commemorate the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation on Reformation Sunday, October 29 at Strum and Elk Creek. Come down to the fellowship hall after the service to watch Rick Steve s Luther and the Reformation: the one-hour public television special commemorating the 500 th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. A community service will be offered that afternoon in Eau Claire. Common Prayer: From Conflict to Communion. Lutheran Catholic Common Commemoration of the Reformation in pm Worship at Immaculate Conception Parish 1712 Highland Ave, Eau Claire. Food and Fellowship immediately following next door at St. John s Lutheran Church 1804 Highland Avenue, Eau Claire where former pastor at Strum Rev. Christine Emerson is now serving. A mass choir will be gathered for the service. Contact the Rev. Dr. Derek Sakowski, frsakowski@gmail.com if you would like to sing with them. Sincerely in Christ, Pastor Lowell Bolstad 500 th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation Bold Public Witness to the Gospel The Hallmark of Lutheranism The Lutheran Confessions were gathered into a book in 1580, called the Book of Concord. The group of Lutheran theologians asserted that what they were confessing was not merely their opinions, but an assertion of truth. The Luther Seal: Summary of the Gospel The most enduring symbol of the Lutheran Reformation is the seal that Luther himself designed to represent his theology. By the early 1520s, this seal begins to appear on the title page of Luther s works. OCTOBER Page 2
3 Announcements The Motto of the Reformation: VDMA Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum (The Word of the Lord Endures Forever) is the motto of the Lutheran Reformation, a confident expression of the enduring power and authority of God s Word. Reformation 500th Anniversary Congregations vote to call The Rev. Valerian Joseph Ahles Both congregations voted in special Congregation Meetings on September 10 to issue a call to The Rev. Valerian Joseph Ahles. According to Parish Council president Tom Wagener in a 9/10/17 to leadership, "I talked to Pastor Ahles today. He's excited about coming to Immanuel/Elk Creek." Tom added, "He will start looking for moving companies. As we talked through the process today, it's apparent his start date will most likely be mid-november." Commemoration of Francis of Assisi on Sunday, October 1 - The service of worship will commemorate Francis of Assisi who is best known for his prayer Make me an instrument of your peace and for his hymn All Creatures of Our God and King. He is also known as a lover of nature and so the practice of blessing of animals. Give the name of your pet to the pastor to be included in a prayer for blessing of animals. Baptism on October 8 - Piper Elizabeth and Hayden Lincoln, twin children of Vincent and Jayde Bertrang, to be presented for Holy Baptism on Sunday, October 8. Chancel Chimes begins soon! Please see Ronnette to sign up or notify Michelle in the office if you would like to join in the fun. No experience necessary! October Worship Fest with polka service on October 22 Men to serve brats and root beer for refreshments A-one, a-two, a-one-two-three. Get your toes tapping in anticipation of October Worship Fest with a polka service on October 22 featuring the Lima Polka Choir. They will offer a half hour of gathering music, so come early to listen. This is the same group that leads the Independence Weekend Service at Pleasantville on the Sunday closest to the 4th of July. No, polka services aren t just for Roman Catholics. Lutherans can have them, too, and what better time than during the month of October? Eats and drinks will be brats and root beer served after the service by the men. Who says Lutherans can t have fun? Reformation Day to be commemorated on October 29 Martin Luther began a movement that called for continual renewal and reformation of the church with his posting of the 95 Theses on October 31, Reformation Day on this 500 th anniversary provides an opportunity to focus on our life of the church being continually renewed. Sing some of the great Lutheran hymns and hear the story of the reformer. The Sunday School will also sing, so bring the grandpas and grandmas and the rest of the relatives. Come down to the fellowship hall after the service to watch Rick Steve s Luther and the Reformation: the onehour public television special commemorating the 500 th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.
