The church is located in Whitehall, and serving starts at 12 noon, carryouts are also available starting at 11:30. Their program is entitles Church Basement Ladies by author, Janet Martin. She was the speaker at one of our breakfasts many years ago, she was very hilarious!. Call for reservations: Kay Nelson, , or church office, The annual Apple Pie Project is approaching fast, it is scheduled to start on Monday, October 2nd, at 9:00 a.m. to assemble boxes. We will also start at 9:00 a.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday to make the pies. Everyone is welcome: We need peelers, rollers, crimpers, crust makers, and sugar and cinnamon mixers. All help is greatly appreciated. Come for a day or two, or just a few hours; any amount of time will help make this fundraiser a success. Dinner is served on both Tuesday and Wednesday, with Apple Pie for Stewardship of God s Earth By Jim Tocko It has been a very relaxing summer not too hot and a adequate amount of rain. I learned a valuable lesson. Some time back I wrote that there was two kinds of gardens neat and untidy. I was forced to untidy gardens. I had inherited a garden culture that aspires to unattainable perfection, one that dictates that we must do this or that or dire consequences will result. Luckily for me, most gardening is common sense. Left to themselves, seeds will germinate and plants will grow, flower and fruit; that is their nature. Left alone, nature is beautiful. Queen Anne lace along with day lilies and brown eyed Susan flourished in the roadsides. Sadly I noticed the decline of the monarch butterfly. Now that autumn is almost upon us, think twice about digging over the gardens. Let the dead plants lie. Spend time with friends and family while soaking in the fall spectacular. Gardens say, slow down, look around you. Believe, Hope. Zoraida Morales
2 From the Pastor By Pastor Lowell Bolstad During this period of transition, I offer the following devotion from the Call Process Booklet of the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin. II. In Calling a Pastor, We Consider Our Own Calling, Part 2 God s gracious giving extends to the church too. God has not been content to let the church fend for itself since Pentecost. On the contrary, the Holy Spirit still enlivens the community of faith. As Bishop, April Ulring Larson has said, What God is interested in is empowering the body of Christ. God has raised up leaders, gifted ministers and pastors for the church in all times and places. When the church has prayed, Save and defend your whole Church, purchased with the precious blood of Christ. Give it pastors and ministers filled with your Spirit, and strengthen it through the Word and the holy sacraments, God has answered. Listen to this wonderful scripture: 2 Peter 1:3 11. Would any of us, either as individual believers or as members together of a congregation, have any reason to question the truth of those verses? In fact, how have the promises offered there been answered and proved true in your experiences of the life of faith? In the life of our congregation? We overhear the prayer that scripture offers up for us in Ephesians 3: The One who has called us is also at work in us doing far more than we can ask or imagine. That s an amazing thought! As we join in singing or saying ELW 858 (LBW 543), Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, focus on verse two and ask, What does that verse mean, promise, and say to us about God s watch over us? Can we claim this hymn s great promise even in calling a new pastor? Luther s Small Catechism offers his explanation of the third and fourth petitions of the Lord s Prayer saying: God s will is done when he strengthens our faith and keeps us firm in his Word as long as we live. And, Daily bread includes everything needed for this life, such as food and clothing, home and property, work and income, a devoted family, and orderly community, good government, favorable weather, peace and health, a good name, and true friends and neighbors. We daily trust God s good gifts for our faith and life. Such confidence also belongs to the faith and life of the whole church. Gracious giving God, give us your help again, just as you have always done. Remind us of your care. Let there be gratitude in our congregation, for all that is needful has been sent and ordained for us already. As we work to call a new pastor to our congregation may we be strengthened for this task with the thought that your providing reaches to every need of your church. This Call Committee and community of believers are your church too. Amen. Call Process Booklet EDITED - Northwest Synod of Wisconsin Page 87 S E PT EM BE R Page 2

5 Daughters of the King/Junior Daughters of the King GREETINGS FROM YOUR ILC RUTH DOK AND REBEKKAH AND ESTHER JDOK CHAPTERS: We're off to a new and exciting year! This Summer I was able to attend a National Retreat for JDOK Directresses in Texas, where I learned more about next year's Triennial. I also received permission for our Chapter to pilot a new program, called the Chrysalis Program, designed just for our Junior Daughters. It has new programming and ideas for games, crafts, Bible Studies, Prayer, Service and more! We will be having our 4th annual Lock-In in February, with the Theme of 'God's Princesses', We will also choose a year-long Service Project, learn more about Jesus and how Christians have fun! There will be an information Day after Church, on Sunday, September 10, in the Parish Hall. This year the girls will be divided into two groups: Ages 7 through 6th grade; and 7th grade through ages 21. the Younger girls will meet on Wednesdays from 3:45 (or whenever the bus arrives at church) until 5:45pm. The Older girls will meet on Sundays from 1pm until 3pm. All groups will meet only 2 times per month. September's Schedule is: Sun: 17 & 24 from 1-3pm Wed: 20 & 27 from 3:45-5:45pm I would like to ask for volunteers to help with these meetings. You do not have to be a Daughter of the King, but you do need to be female, and a member of ILC, and over 21. Parents are welcome, too. If you can help, please call the church office (715) or Sara Heck (715) I am also trying to get Safe Church training for all who help. You may have heard that our Sister Janet Cole had an operation recently. I ask you all for prayers for healing for her. I have not been doing too much for the DOK this Summer, because I have been taking care of my Dad, who just passed away. Hopefully, I can now get back to business, since we need to get focused about going to the Texas Triennial in June, As I have said before, The Order of the Daughters of the King is not allowed to fund raise for themselves, although they may ask for donations. It will cost about $1500. per person to get to the Triennial. We are hoping to send at least 5 Juniors and 3 senior Daughters/chaperones. One of our Junior Daughters, Rizzo, is even planning to Transition to becoming a senior Daughter at Triennial, in front of over 600 other Daughters, as well as her own Mother/also a senior Daughter. I will be writing for grant monies and the girls and women will be paying part of their own costs. I am hoping that there are people in the Congregation that would like to share in this Ministry by helping with the cost, as well. If you are so moved, there is a DOK/JDOK designated gift fund already in the ILC church budget. All you need to do is mark it so on your check and put it in the offering plate. Remember, these young girls are the Church of the future...and even now. Back to the DOK: I am working on a Fall Retreat at ILC. I think it will be in October. Please look for sign up sheets and posters near the Welcome Table. As always, if you are interested or feel called to a life of Prayer, Service, and Evangelism, give me a call: (715) or the church office. Let us help you find and live out your Passion for Christ. fhs Sara Heck DOK Ruth Chapter President JDOK Rebekah and Esther Directress Page 5 T HE CHUR CH M ESSE NGER

10 Announcements Mission Support As members of the ELCA, our faith in a loving God frees us to be generous and to boldly participate in God s work in the world. Stewardship is no longer simply about paying the church s bills. It is about how congregations can together live out God s call to love our neighbor. We are open to the Holy Spirit s invitation to participate in and contribute to God s work in the world using all of the gifts that God has entrusted to our care. Mission Support the portion of offerings that ELCA congregations share with synods and the churchwide organization unites us in this vital, life-giving work. Mission Support provides 80 percent of the resources to enable the ELCA to begin new ministries and accompany existing congregations as growing centers for evangelical mission. These funds also provide the staff and resources for the development of new leaders, partnership with churches around the globe, alleviating poverty, working for justice and peace, and so much more. The ELCA s evangelical and missional witness invites generous giving. Individuals and congregations are encouraged to increase Mission Support through their decisions and actions. Synods and the churchwide organization share these Mission Support dollars through our work in the expressions of the church. With our hands, we do God s work of restoring and reconciling communities throughout the world. Chancel Choir will rehearse Sundays at 8:20 a.m. before service on September 17, September 24, October 1, and October 8. All are welcome! Calling all Ding-a-lings! Chancel Chimes begins soon!
