Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple." - Lk 14:25-27 Sunday: Wis 9:13-18b/Phlm 9-10, 12-17/Lk 14:25-33 Monday: Col 1:24--2:3/Lk 6:6-11 Tuesday: Col 2:6-15/Lk 6:12-19 Wednesday: Col 3:1-11/Lk 6:20-26 Thursday: Col 3:12-17/Lk 6:27-38 Friday: 1 Tm 1:1-2, 12-14/Lk 6:39-42 Saturday: Nm 21:4b-9/Phil 2:6-11/Jn 3:13-17 Next Sunday: Ex 32:7-11, 13-14/1 Tm 1:12-17/Lk 15:1-32 or 15: RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME As we gather today, the school year is in full swing and the parish schedule is full. With so much to give thanks and praise to God for, we are reminded in our readings today that God desires our full commitment to the task of discipleship. Perhaps our prayer today can be for a renewal of commitment in all our parish ministries, and for renewed hearts for each of us as well. In the midst of the Great Recession many construction plans were abandoned. Back in February, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis released a report analyzing the effect of the restrained construction environment on the economy. From a peak of 400,000 housing starts per quarter to just over 100,000 in the final quarter of 2012, the total industry (construction and real estate), which once accounted for ten million jobs, lost 2.5 million of its workers over five years. Data used by the Fed showed that employment was on a growth trend if you excluded the construction industry. Add that industry into the picture, and employment in the past few years continues its downward march. The report also points to the fact that construction has a large indirect effect on the economy as well, since more building increases demand for things like furniture and banking and legal services. In the Gospel this weekend, Jesus uses the example of calculating the cost to build a tower as a way of inviting those who heard him to consider what it means to become one of his followers. The life of the Gospel is more than just a quick acceptance of Jesus into one's life. There are costs associated with becoming a disciple. Jesus puts it rather bluntly at the end of this week's text when he states, "Anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple." The Great Recession certainly saw many people losing all of their possessions. Jobs were lost, retirement savings were used up, homes were foreclosed, and plans for college were abandoned. But this kind of imposed loss is not what Jesus is speaking of. He is inviting those who have-and there are still many of us that fall into that category-to not become overly attached to all of our possessions. Love of material things can keep us from seeing Christ, most especially from seeing Christ in our brothers and sisters in need Liturgical Publications Inc

The Men s Weekend is scheduled for October 3-6, 2013; and, the Women s Weekend is scheduled for November 7 10, Weekends start on Thursday evening and end on Sunday afternoon. Cursillo, (pronounced kur-see-yo, ), is a Spanish word meaning short course, ---a short course in Christianity. A Cursillo Weekend is an Encounter with Christ. It is not a retreat. Rather, it is something which will strengthen your faith and bring you closer to Jesus. Bishop Bootkoski supports the Cursillo movement and has also made a Cursillo Weekend. If you are interested in making a Cursillo Weekend, you may obtain an application from our website at or you may contact the Pre-Cursillo Chairperson, Lorri DeNoyelles at, lpdrn@aol.com or (732) You may also contact Dr. Tony Tangorra, Lay Director, at drtangorra@gmail.com or call Early registration is advisable, as space is limited. Also, any Cursillistas that would like to help or assist for these weekends should contact Dr. Tony Tangorra at drtangorra@gmail.com Please pray for all of our men and women serving in the Armed forces, especially Staff Sargeant Francis Fiduk III Pvt. Christopher Foley Sergeant Paul A. Incao Captain James A. Jablonski Jr. Staff Sergeant Jeff Morella USMC Lieutenant Commander Peter G. Rybski, Jr. PFC Steven Ubry CMA Mark J. Walyga Please let us know if you have a family member who is serving in the military and we will acknowledge them in our weekly bulletin. Please share the good new with us when one of the above soldiers returns home! EDDIE QUETTE SAYS: If you arrive late for Mass, and the congregation is seated and listening to the readings or Gospel, common courtesy requires that the late arrivals wait in the back of the church and await the ushers signal to find a seat after the readings have finished. This will usually occur when the congregation is standing, or while the choir/organist is singing/playing. By the same token, it is proper to wait until the priest has given the final blessing and processed down the aisle before leaving the church after Mass. It is also a time to greet fellow parishioners, and experience the community of friendship that exists in Sacred Heart Parish. Cell phones, beepers, pagers, blackberry's palm pilots - we are all connected these days. During Mass or when you are in church for any reason, please remember to shut off your phones or other devices. At the very least ensure that these items are in silent mode. If you must respond please leave the church quietly before answering. Our friends can wait to hear our voice, and we'll be in a better frame of mind after having spent some time with our Savior.
4 Please Note For families and individuals who are registered at Sacred Heart Parish to be in good standing, they must attend Mass at Sacred Heart Church on a regular basis and use the church envelopes. Regular basis is not less than 75% of the time. The use of church envelopes is the only way we can determine attendance. The amount of the donation in the envelopes is never a determining factor. The use of your envelope each week will tell us that you are attending regularly. This will avoid problems or embarrassments in the future.
