This is an opportunity for the entire congregation to review our work in the past year and to hear our vision for the future. It s a time of celebration as we lift up our church s discipleship within the community and into the world. It s where we identify our congregation s mission and our growth in faith. The mission and the vision of the church create the foundation for our work as a faith community. It provides the outline for our activities and the projects we undertake. It gives our committees focus with our monthly planning. The mission of the United Methodist Church is: to make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World. During the past few weeks, our committees have asked questions centered on this mission statement as we plan new ministries, projects and expand our educational opportunities. Discussion and decisions are centered on these questions: Given this decision or ministry, what will be the best way to live out the Mission?

What will it look like as we do it for the Mission? In other words, as Hope UMC continues to grow in numbers and in Spirit, we will focus our energies upon individual growth in discipleship; and strengthening our church community to meet the needs of others. I invite you all to participate in this process. Everyone is welcome to attend our monthly Church Council meetings which are held on the first Tuesdays of each month. The next meeting is scheduled for October 5 7:00. And mark your calendar to be present at the yearly Church Conference for worship and celebration October 23 rd. (Godliness) Psalm 15 October 24: "Count Your Blessings" (Blessings) Psalm 16 October 31: "Victory!" Prayer Chain There are two active prayer chains that help to connect our church family with each other so that we can share in times of celebration and/or the needs for intercessory prayer. 3 The Deacon s Corner An Old Proverb for Today Mark and I spent the summers of 1973 and 1974 on the shores of Lake Plantagenet in Bemidji, Minnesota. Camp Thunderbird for Girls provided our source of income before our teachers' salaries were spread out over the entire year. Many weird and curious memories were created during those few months: images of hungry black flies, shocking screech owls, overly-friendly leeches, and eerie loons. How strange, though, it was for a Native American proverb that we were taught so many years ago to resurface this week. As we counselors emphasized the importance of caring for the North Woods, the campers were encouraged to memorize these words: Never let it be said, and said unto your shame, that all was beauty here before you came. As I thought about these words I wondered what kind of "beauty" was meant. Was it merely the purity of life in the wilderness? Could it be the beauty of good friendships and family relationships? Maybe the beauty of kind and encouraging words shared during times of struggle or hardship? Isn't the beauty of serenity and peace a precious gift? May each of us add to the beauty of life--in all of its wonderful ways--by sharing the love of Christ wherever we may be! You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. I was born and raised on the southwest side of Chicago. I am part of a second-generation German family here in America. My last name was Klug. I was baptized, confirmed and married at Ashburn Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod.) I was part of the first, four-year graduating class out of Bogan High School. I have six children (four grown) and three grandchildren (one grown.) I came to Joliet in 1992 as a homeless person. I have worked hard as an activity assistant in nursing homes to build up what little I have. I am practically the sole support of my family. All I ask for is a place to worship and study the Bible. In my spare time I like to cook, bake, crochet, do jigsaw puzzles, watch birds, do soduko puzzles, play cards and dice with my family, read books, and play video games (Not too much.)

5 Richard Betourne: I was born in Kankakee where my parents lived all their lives. After high school I joined the Army Air Corps for two terms. I was the radio man in an F-80 shooting star. I am retired from Trailways- Greyhound after 50 years of service. When I left the service I married my first wife and we had two children, Dawn and Rick. They are both married and live in Florida. Dawn has no children, but Rick has two daughters. Laura is a freshman at Florida State, and Leslie is a senior in high school. Dona and I have been happily married for 39 years, and have enjoyed many nice vacation trips together. Dona Betourne: I grew up in Chicago and graduated from DePauw University, a Methodist school in Indiana. After graduation I married my first husband. We moved back to Illinois, where I managed a doctor s office for six years. We had two daughters, Pam and Laura. Their father and I divorced when they were six and seven years old. After my children were in school, I taught in Glenwood, Illinois, for 15 years. As some of you know, I had open heart surgery last October and was at Northwestern Hospital for four months. I am told it was only by the grace of God and a strong will to live that I made it through. The fact that Richard stayed every night with me definitely had a lot to do with my recovery. We are both happy to become members of a friendly and wonderful church. Tammy and Travis Harris: Tammy and Travis grew up in Pike County, IL, which is located about 30-miles east of Quincy, IL (about 4-hours S. W. of here). We were both members of a small United Methodist Church in that area. We moved our family to Plainfield four years ago. We chose Plainfield based on its location, small town feel, and its school system s reputation and state test scores. We started to attend Hope in an attempt to introduce the Word to our daughters as they grow, mature, and ask spiritual related questions. Our family consists of: Brianna is in 2 nd grade at Wesmere Elementary. She enjoys dancing, singing, riding her bike, and just about any outside activity. Madison is in 6 th grade at Drauden Point Middle School. She enjoys gymnastics, tumbling, Cross Country, Track & Field, reading, shopping and watching scary movies. Spencer is a senior at Plainfield South High School. He enjoys wood working, reading, watching classic westerns movies, and playing football for PSHS. He also works with Special Olympics; ranging from coaching, mentoring and camp counseling. Tammy is a homemaker and Longaberger Home Consultant. She likes to bake and cook, she enjoys reading, and running the kids all over the area for their activities. Travis is a Pharmaceutical Sales Executive that works with local Psychiatrists, Pediatricians, and Loyola University specializing in ADHD. He enjoys several outdoor activities, weekend projects around the house, collecting classic cars, and spending time with family. In summary, we are very happy to be a part of Hope United Methodist Church. We have felt very welcome from our 1 st visit, the girl s attendance at VBS, working on the kitchen with several of the men on Saturdays, and throughout our new member classes with Rev. Glenna. Thank you for making our transition into the Hope family enjoyable and exciting. AND SPREADING GOD S LOVE BY REACHING OUT TO THE NEEDS OF PEOPLE. Boomer s Kids - Please continue to bring school supplies for Boomer s kids. We will be collecting yearround to help supply the needs of the kids all though the school year. The Joliet Cluster is continuing to support the Ridgewood United Community Pantry, an outreach ministry of Trinity United Methodist Church. In October we are asking for donations of Bottled or Canned Juice. Please place them in the blue bin in the narthex. Crop Walk Again this year Hope UMC will participate in the Joliet Community CROP Walk on October 3. CROP Hunger Walks help fight local and global hunger and poverty, with 25% of the money that is raised stays here in the Joliet area to assist local food pantries and other hunger-fighting initiatives. Registration time is 1:00 at Westminster Presbyterian Church; step off time is scheduled for 1:30. There are three ways to participate in the 2010 CROP Hunger Walk: walk either the 1 mile or the 3 mile route; sponsor one of our young people to walk; or become an online donor by visiting If you have additional questions about this event, contact Pastor Sue. All Saints Day This year All Saints Day will be celebrated on October 31. The purpose of this time is to recognize and honor those family members we loved and who have now passed on into their eternal home. Marty Kaspar will be creating a DVD presentation so that all of us may share with you in this time of remembrance.
