2 The service of faith and the promo on of jus ce cannot be for us simply one ministry among others. It must be the integra ng factor of all our ministries; and not only of our ministries but also of our inner life as individuals, as communi es, and as a worldwide brotherhood The integra ng principle of our mission is the inseparable link between faith and the promo on of the jus ce of the kingdom (34th General Congrega on of the Society of Jesus) To live a life of faith means to live a life of ac on. It means that we desire to live beyond ourselves and become men and women for others. It means that we have the capacity to love and be compassionate servants to those around us, especially to those who are marginalized, poor in spirit, and to our neighbors who are in need. It means to be in communion and loving rela onship with others through deeds and not only words. This is faith. This is jus ce. A couple months ago, I wouldn t have had the words to describe the role jus ce has in my faith and as a follower of Christ. I thought I had a choice- I could choose faith or jus ce. I was wrong. I joined the St. Mary s staff in early August and through working with the Faith Doing Jus ce team, my mind and heart have been exposed to a whole new part of my faith. A part that has always been there, but just has collected some dust throughout the past few years. However, a er being in this parish for just two months and being exposed to ac ve and inspira onal social jus ce-minded parishioners, I have come to realize that there is no separa on between jus ce and faith; they are one in the same- and we can t ignore that. Fortunately, our parish is offering an excep onal opportunity for undergraduate students to open up their hearts to social jus ce and to learn what this is all about. The Igna an Family Teach-In for Jus ce (IFTJ), is a gathering for Jesuit ins tu ons and schools to come together in the context of social jus ce and solidarity to learn, reflect, pray, network, and advocate together. Over the course of the weekend, par cipants hear from remarkable keynote speakers, a end breakout presenta ons and workshops, and meet with elected officials to lobby for selected issues. Most importantly, this a opportunity to journey together as a St. Mary s fellowship- to learn together, pray together, and have a shared experience. An experience we can then take back to our parish and share with our community. I am invi ng you (undergraduate students) to join me in this trip. We are looking for students who want to embark on this journey of learning and reflec ng together. Students that want to do more in their faith and grow as followers of Christ- who want to put their faith to ac on. The gathering takes place Nov. 3-5 and almost all expenses are covered by the parish. Along with a ending the conference, we also have an opportunity to explore the D.C. area together! Memories are just wai ng to be made. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact me at aliedtke@smspnewman.org You can learn more about the gathering on the IFTJ website: h ps://igna ansolidarity.net/i j/ Note: Spots are limited and are filled on a first come, first served basis. As members of the Body of Christ, we join in this ancient tradi on as we keep vigil with immigrant families those separated at our southern border, over con nents by forced migra on, or torn apart by deporta on, as many are here in our parish.
