2 Celebrate the Miracle of Each Day By Karen Thomas, Campus Minister As life slowed down for me in May, I was able to make me for a physical with my primary care doctor. I have been with this physician for fi een years and he helped coordinate my care when I was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer over twelve years ago. A er we updated my health history and spoke about health maintenance for the upcoming year, my doctor stopped, looked at me in earnest and said, You really are a miracle. It is not the first me he has shared these words with me, but this me it moved me in a different way due to a string of life events in recent months including the loss of an aunt and uncle, a close friend being diagnosed with cancer, and my own transi oning from full me work to home life. While there is not a day of life that goes by that I am not grateful to be alive, I don t regularly acknowledge the miracle of my life. O en, I only look at what is next on my to do list and fail to grasp the miracle of each day. At the beginning of the gospel for May 29th we hear: Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who needed to be cured. Luke 9: 11b In this part of Luke s gospel (chapters 7-9), a er performing mul ple miracles and right before the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God and healed those who needed to be cured. I imagine Jesus moving with urgency during this part of his life: preaching, teaching, healing, praying, and performing miracles. His movement is fluid and unified; not one part of his ministry is more important than another. I wonder how Jesus might be invi ng me into a life of discipleship that involves mul ple ways of sharing my faith. How might his mighty works and miracles empower me to no ce and celebrate the miracle of each day? As a Church we are at the halfway point in the liturgical year. We have lived through Jesus birth, many parts of his life, heard many of his teachings, walked with him in his death and resurrec on and rejoiced in the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. There is o en a sense of comple on for me when the Easter Season is over and the worship space looks ordinary again. I fear that as summer sets in with changes in weather, rou nes and travels, it might be easy for me to let my faith life go on autopilot. However, in recognizing that the Church has given us 25 weeks of ordinary me in a row, I know that there is significant work yet to be done in my faith life. In these many weeks of ordinary me we are called to listen to Jesus words about the kingdom of God and how we are invited to par cipate in building up God s kingdom. The work that Jesus started is not over and he has invited us to help cul vate and grow his kingdom. As we marvel at the miracles that Jesus performed, let s not miss the miracles present in our own lives. Some mes it takes a gentle reminder from a physician, friend, or loved one that life is a miracle and that ordinary me can truly be an extraordinary me. Staff Changes at SMSP As we close out another faith-filled year of ministry, we want to announce plans for various staff changes for the academic year. 3 Mondays at 6:30 pm Centering Prayer is a silent prac ce of prayer that rests on the faith that Christ is present within by his Holy Spirit. It is an excellent prepara on for contempla ve prayer, which is a grace or gi bestowed by God. Centering Prayer is an inten onal openness to, or prac ce of "wai ng" on God encouraging the building of a more in mate rela onship with Jesus and the movement of the Holy Spirit. It is rooted in centuries-old monas c prayer. The book, Open Mind, Open Heart by Father Thomas Kea ng, OCSO, is a good introduc on. The first Monday of each month we listen to an introduc on to centering prayer and then pray for 20 minutes. Otherwise, we typically sit and pray for two 20-minute sessions with a short medita ve walk in between. All are welcome. 4 Mercy in Action: Thanks for supporting the DSA Your gi to the Diocesan Services Appeal helps with many ministries, including those that promote social jus ce concerns. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, each of us can show our love and mercy by suppor ng diocesan programs that assist refugees, con nue to care for the people of Flint, and those that serve the poor and homeless in our area. Many of these projects are too big for one parish to support alone. It s important that we pull together as a wider church to accomplish these goals. Helping to resettle refugees With recent wars and terrorist threats, the world s refugees are in serious crisis. St. Vincent Catholic Chari es in Lansing has been assis ng refugees since the 1970s. Since then, St. Vincent s Catholic Refugee Services have helped to rese le more than 17,000 refugees in the Lansing area. This organiza on, supported by our diocese, provides help with housing, jobs, educa on and health services, for those who are seeking an escape from the world s most dangerous regions. Our DSA dollars also help with: Medical Transporta on Services Ministry and assistance at area prisons Marriage prepara on and marriage retreats Support for the elderly and chronically ill Special events for our students, such as the Middle School Youth Rally Religious educa on materials for the deaf Please help us to reach our 2016 DSA goal of $73,468. With your help, our parish can achieve this and hopefully receive some of the pledge money back. Once we reach our goal, the Diocese will return 50 percent of any paid pledge monies received, over and above our parish goal. Thank you to everyone who has already made a pledge to the DSA. If you have not yet made a gi, we invite you to consider the many ways in which you can be merciful to those in need. Thank you! DSA Prayer Loving and gracious God, Help us to remember that united, we are called to love and serve one another through the generous sharing of our me, talent, and treasure. Please bless our efforts and help us to grow as a unified and vibrant community of faith. Give us the grace to be generous, so that we may faithfully do the work of Your Church.
