C: Amen. P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. P: We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. 7 PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Almighty God, C: you anointed Jesus at his baptism with the Holy Spirit and revealed him as your beloved Son. Keep all who are born of water and the Spirit faithful in your service, that we may rejoice to be called children of God, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. WORD FIRST LESSON Isaiah 43:1-7 1 But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. 9 GOSPEL Luke 3:15-17, P: The holy gospel according to Luke the third chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. P: 15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. This is the gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. 9

11 APOSTLES' CREED P: With the whole church, let us confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 12 SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Sharing our life, he lived among us to reveal your glory and love, that our darkness should give way to his own brilliant light. P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. P: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P: With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming. THE LORD'S PRAYER P: Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Come to the table. Feast on God s abundant life for you. (United in our shared baptism, we gather at Christ s table. We believe that our Lord Jesus Christ is truly present in the bread and wine of Holy Communion, bringing to us the gift of forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. Please come forward via the side aisles and receive the bread. After you receive the bread, you may choose an individual glass of red wine or white grape juice. A chalice of wine is available in the center for those who wish to drink from a common cup. You may return to your pew via the center aisle. If you do not desire to receive communion, you may come forward for a blessing or remain seated.) 24 NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING The Annual Meeting and a light lunch will be held on Sunday, January 24th, 2016 at 11:45am in the Fellowship Hall. Business to be conducted at the Annual Meeting on the 24th will include: Council Elections, Endowment Board Elections, Voting to change Pastor Kristin s call from a 2 year term to a permanent call, Looking Ahead to 2016, and Approval of the Budget for 2016 If you have any questions, please contact Renee Rusch, Barb Bubb, Amy Kirchenwitz or Steve Weina The meeting agenda and proposed 2016 budget will be available by January 10th, 2016 BUDGET LISTENING SESSIONS Sunday, January 10th, 2016 at 9:30-10:15am in the Fireside Room ~ and ~ Wednesday, January 13th, 2016 at 6:45-7:30pm in the Fireside Room The Executive Team will be holding Listening/Q&A sessions to cover the budget and get all the discussion out before the vote at the annual meeting. If you feel strongly about the budget or have questions, this is the time for you to get your answers, so please plan to attend one of these sessions. 1 st and 2 nd year CONFIRMATION students will meet on Wednesday, January 13 th, 20 th, and 27 th from 6:45-8:00pm. Emily Davis will be giving a VOCAL RECITAL on Sunday, January 31 at 4:00pm with a reception to follow. It will take place at St. John's Lutheran Church in Brookfield. 25 EMMAUS SINGERS NEED YOUR HELP!! We have decided that it s time to change our name and we want your suggestions. So over the next couple of weeks we will run this article. Please provide your input and drop your suggestions in the envelope hanging on the bulletin board in the narthex. The Emmaus singers will pick their favorite suggestions and we will let you make the final decision! The person who suggests the winning name will get a special prize. If you have any questions please talk to Pastor Kristin. 8 th -12 th grade youth and their friends are invited to attend YOUTH GROUP on Sunday, January 10 th from 11:45am-1:00pm. We will have lunch and do a fun activity. SUMMER SERVICE TRIP! Current 8 th -12 th graders are invited to attend a week of service and fun in Fort Morgan, Colorado July 8-17, Please pick up a registration form by the youth bulletin board and return it to Pastor Kristin with the $200 deposit to reserve your spot.
