P: 27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? 28 And they answered him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. 29 He asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. 30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. 31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. 34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. 6 BLESSINGS FOR A NEW ACADEMIC YEAR P: We are all called to be part of God s work in the world, and God has given each one of us gifts and strengths to use in that work. We ask God to help each of us to discover and develop our gifts and strengths. And to remind us that whatever our gifts, we are doing God s work when we are at work, church, school, or home. P: We ask God s blessing on those who are involved in education in schools and at St. Peter. (Individuals are invited to stand) P: For the marvels of your creation, C: we praise you, O God. P: For the opportunity to explore and study, C: we praise you, O God. P: For those who guide us, teachers and mentors, C: we praise you, O God. 8 THE LORD'S PRAYER P: Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: God gives food to those who hunger. Come, be fed, be healed. (United in our shared baptism, we gather at Christ s table. We believe that our Lord Jesus Christ is truly present in the bread and wine of Holy Communion, bringing to us the gift of forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. Please come forward via the side aisles and receive the bread. After you receive the bread, you may choose an individual glass of red wine or white grape juice. A chalice of wine is available in the center for those who wish to drink from a common cup. You may return to your pew via the center aisle. If you do not desire to receive communion, you may come forward for a blessing or remain seated.) We will be offering new opportunities for adults with inquiring minds to ask some questions, maybe wrestle with answers and do those things with others! Beginning October 4th, St. Peter will offer Adult Education on two different days and times. Sunday mornings in the Fireside Room: 9:30am-10:15am on the first 3 Sundays each month (October 4th, 11th, 18th to start) Wednesday evenings in the Fireside Room: 7:00pm-8:00pm after worship on the second and fourth Wednesdays. (October 14th and 28th to start) Pastor Kristin and Janet have the first topics in the works, and we plan to incorporate the talents and interests of other gifted leaders as the year goes forward. If you have ideas of topics or areas of study, send an or talk to Pastor Kristin or Janet! THE FIRST DAY OF CONFIRMATION is on Wednesday, September 16th from 6:45pm-8:00pm. 6 th -7 th graders and their parents, and 8 th grade Mentors/Mentees and parents should plan on attending this first class together. St. Peter Lutheran Church is now accepting applications for the Thirteenth Annual Holiday Craft and Bake Sale. It will be held on Saturday, November 21, Booth size is approximately 10 x 8 feet for the cost of $30.00 for the one day event. Applications can be obtained by calling the church office at , or by calling Sally at You can also get an application on the Church website under forms. Don't miss out on showing us your talents and make money at the same time! COFFEE FELLOWSHIP We are back to two services on Sundays, and that means it's time for Coffee Fellowship between services again! We are going to try something different starting Sunday, September 13! - If you want to be included in the "rotation" fill out the little sheet in your bulletin and drop it in the offering plate. We will only schedule folks to help if they volunteer to help. - Only coffee! No need to prepare snacks for everyone. Just arrive early enough to get the coffee going and moved out to the Narthex (about 8:15am). Feel free to bring something to celebrate a special occasion or just because. But it's no longer part of the "job duties". (...don't worry about the Sunday School kids - they will have their own snacks). Please consider volunteering! The more people who volunteer, the less often you come up in the rotation! Thrivent members! Did you know that you are part of the Thrivent Action Team? Did you know that twice a year you are eligible to apply for a $250 gift card that can be used to purchase materials for a ministry/service project? If you are interested in applying for and using a gift card for one of our God s Work, Our Hands projects on September 13 th, talk to Carol Witt or Janet Blank (to find out more about the projects), then ask your Thrivent Rep how you can apply for a gift card to help out the project that interests you. 18

Sign up to let us know if there is interest for the Drop In Fun League BABY ITEMS NEEDED FOR LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF LAYETTE KITS. When you are shopping and garage sale-ing, please help us find baby items for layettes. We are in need of hats, socks and sweaters for newborn to 24 month sizes. We also need receiving blankets. Donations can be new or gently used. Please place the items in the "Layette" basket on the shelves across from the bathrooms in the fellowship hall. Thank you so much for your help! Have you admired the ministry of St. Peter s Café, our monthly community meal, but not been able to be part of it for some reason? Not a cook? Busy on Thursday evenings? There are several smaller, but important ways you can help out! Could you: A few days before the meal, get shut-in names from the office and call to ask them if they would like a meal delivered from the Café? Deliver meals from the Café to shut-ins, or take leftovers to the Open Door Walk-On Facility? Come to the Café at 5:00 or 5:30 to eat a meal and then stay to help clean up? Help bake desserts once in a while? We are compiling a list of bakers we can call on as needed. (You would not be called every month!) 20 TIME AND TALENT AS PART OF BEING A CHEERFUL GIVER It is important to remember that when we focus exclusively on giving in terms of money alone, we lose sight of the bigger picture. God calls us to be generous in all areas our lives and invites us to explore the many opportunities to share ourselves through our time and talent. When we ground our giving in a biblical context, our financial generosity becomes an expression of our love for God, for our neighbor and for ourselves.
