OUR SAVIOR LUTHERAN CHURCH WAYNE, NEBRASKA PRESENTS: MONTHLY The Mission of Our Savior: That all may know Christ, grow in Christ and joyfully go with Christ. God s work. Our hands. V OLUME XX I SSUE 2 F EBUARY 2015 FROM OUR PASTOR... I remember people always asking, What are you giving up for Lent? And, of course, the entertaining answers would begin homework, obeying your parents, work, cooking etc. Lent just seemed, well, strange to me. Something from the past, something that had no relevance at all in my life. I ve changed my mind. I value Lent as a way to know God and my relationship with God on a more personal basis. Hundreds of years ago Lent was a time when new converts were instructed in preparation for induction into the church through Baptism on Easter Sunday. For those who were already Baptized it became a time to focus on our sins in order to better understand the Gospel message of He Has Risen, on Easter morning. Giving something up is a practice which is intended to focus our minds on repentance. Sometimes I ve attempted to give something up for Lent in order to devote more time to Bible study and prayer. I have found that this doesn t work for me. I tend to be more focused on what I gave up! And so now I add something. Something like deliberately reading certain books or added devotional time to my regular spiritual disciplines. And I find that through this I appreciate more deeply the meaning of the cross and the victory of the resurrection. With this in mind we have not given anything up for Lent this year at Our Savior, we ve added. Our focus of Lent this year is, The Foundations of Our Faith. We will be re-discovering the catechism for both our Wednesday evening Lenten service as well as our Saturday evening and Sunday morning worship. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and each Wednesday up until Holy Week the messages given at each service are as follows: February 18 Ash Wednesday The Ten Commandments February 25 Jesus Christ, God s Son, Savior March 4 The Trinity March 11 Holy Baptism March 18 Holy Communion March 25 The Cross of Suffering A small emblem of our faith will be distributed at each Wednesday evening service for each family to take home to keep as a reminder throughout the year. During Saturday evening and Sunday morning worship services our confirmation students will lead us in reciting different parts of the catechism during our Creedal time in our liturgy. As we enter into the season of Lent I want to tell you how grateful I am to be here with you. My prayer is that we discover the blessings of Lent, that God will gather us closer to him, and that we be prepared to experience Good Friday and Easter with new and fresh eyes and hearts come Spring. See you in worship! Pastor Jeanne
PAGE 2 V OLUME XX I SSUE 2 LENT BEGINS... ASH WEDNESDAY is February 18 and marks the beginning of the Lenten season. An Ash Wednesday worship service will be held at Our Savior at 7pm. The service will include the Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion. In addition to our 7pm service, we will also offer an Ash Wednesday service at The Oaks at 2pm. Midweek Lenten services will be held at 7pm each Wednesday evening during Lent (February 25 March 25). Services will also be held on Wednesday afternoons at 2pm at The Oaks. As Pr. Jeanne shares in her article (on page one) our worship times during Lent will focus on The Foundations of our Faith. Her article also includes a list of the Wednesday evening message series. LENTEN SUPPERS... Again, the Lenten season will begin soon and with that comes Mid-Week Lenten services and those delicious Lenten suppers! If your group or organization would like to take care of serving a supper, please contact the church office ( or kris@oslcwayne.org) as soon as possible. Dates available are: February 25 and March 4, 11 and 25. There is no charge for the meal, but a freewill offering is taken with proceeds going to the group or organization providing the meal. ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY DURING LENTEN SEASON This coming season of Lent, during our Wednesday evening services as well as our regular weekend worship service, we will be going back to basics, back to the foundations of our faith. As important as this is to do once in a while we good Lutherans also know that dwelling on ourselves too much is never a good thing either. For a little balance this year and as a way of broadening our understanding of God s world and our brothers and sisters who live in it, we will look at the traditions and foundations of a people whose faith is different than ours. And so we offer a 6 week study entitled, Discover Islam. This study is made available through our ELCA in conjunction with the Center of Christians-Muslim Engagement for Peace and Justice at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and the Islamic Society of North America. It is in the hope of all that were involved in the making that in viewing these 6 documentary DVD s and discussing the topic that goes along with each we will deepen our understanding of their religion, deepen our understanding of our own Lutheran faith, and enhance our relationships with our Muslim neighbors across the world. Each week we will study one aspect of their faith; Faith and History; Christians and Islam; Women in Islam; African Americans and Islam; Islam in America, and Islam, a Faith Hijacked. Please join in the discussion beginning Sunday, February 22, at 9am in the multi-purpose room. DURING LENT... Handbells will continue to rehearse at 6pm on Wednesday evenings. Adult Choir rehearsal will start after the 7pm midweek Lenten services.
MONTHLY PAGE 3 CATECHISM INSTRUCTION The word "catechism" is taken from one of the New Testament words for "teach" or "instruct" (Luke 1.4). When we use the word "catechism" today we are usually referring to the core teachings of the Lutheran faith using the Small Catechism written by Martin Luther. Ideally this instruction begins at home, but it also continues in the church and school. At Our Savior Lutheran Church catechism instructions for youth begin in Sunday School and continue on during Confirmation. Children in 2 nd through 5 th grades will be given instruction in Catechism by Pastor Jeanne during the regular Sunday School hour on the dates given below: February 1 2 nd Grade Lord s Prayer February 15 3 rd Grade Apostle s Creed February 22 3 rd Grade Apostle s Creed March 1 4 th and 5 th Grades 10 Commandments March 8 4 th and 5 th Grades 10 Commandments Please mark these dates on your calendar! If you wish to have more information please contact Pastor Jeanne. OF THE FOUNDATION The first-quarter meeting of the Foundation Board of Our Savior Lutheran Church will be held Tuesday, February 17, at 7:00 p.m. Grant applications are available in the church office and should be turned in by February 9 for consideration. The mission of the Our Savior Lutheran Church Foundation is to build an endowment fund that will give longrange financial support to the church. 4 PAGE 4 V OLUME XX I SSUE 2 SPIRITUAL FAITH FORMATION NEWS By Deb Hammer John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Faith Formation can be described as deepening your faith, developing the ponderings of your heart, or renewal of the mind. Faith Formation is the practice of developing your own best practice for your relationship with God. On Sunday mornings in the Prayer Room, I will be present for anyone wishing to learn new faith practices to help you grow in your own personal journey. Please feel free to visit with me anytime. Faith isn t just for Sunday mornings. I am looking forward to working with you in finding new ways to explore faith. In the fall of 2015, we will begin a new Faith Builders class. We have had many people from Our Savior grow their faith through this wonderful Christian journey. Our Savior currently offers two Bible study times during the week. Tuesday mornings at 7:00 a.m. at Tacos & More and again on Thursday mornings at 10:30 am at the Oaks. Are you interested in a Bible study or a book study and would like to meet with a small group at a time that is convenient for you? Maybe you are interested in having a small group with a specific topic such as scrapbooking or wood crafting. Please feel free to visit with me about your hopes and dreams. I pray the Holy Spirit moves within you to feel a closer connection with God in your own faith journey and walking with others on the way. (Each month, I ll present a new Spiritual Practice from one of my favorite resources, Spirituality and Practice by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat. Please enjoy this month s Spiritual Practice.) BIBLE STUDY OPPORTUNITIES: When: Tuesday mornings at 7:00 am Where: Tacos & More Study: Lessons for the following Sunday s readings. When: Thursday mornings at 10:30 am Where: The Oaks Study: The Book of John Would you be interested in an evening or afternoon bible study? Please share your interest with Deb Hammer. SPIRITUAL PRACTICE: LOVE By Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat Love of self, love of neighbors, and love of God are the foundational stones of the world's religions. Love is not something that you just fall into, as the romantic songs suggest. Love is a spiritual practice. You can get better at it over time. Begin by recognizing that you can't love others until you truly love yourself body, mind, and soul. As you move through a day, be aware of love's expressions emerging from you or coming toward you attraction, focus, absorption, desire, adoration, security, trust, empathy, caring, harmony, contentment, communion. Practice extending the reach of these feelings. It is through loving that we experience the love of God. God the Beloved writes one prescription over and over: Fear not! I love you. Daily Reminder Seeing a heart shape-in a card, a shadow, or the clouds-is my cue to practice kindness and love. Meditate and Challenge "In a world so torn apart by rivalry, anger, and hatred, we have the privileged vocation to be living signs of a love that can bridge all divisions and heal all wounds," Henri J. M. Nouwen wrote of the Christian church. With your spiritual community, create or join a mission project which enables you to be signs of love in the world. Examples would be to help with the food pantry or say prayers for our nation. Practice of the Day February is most notorious for Valentine s Day. How many Valentine cards have you sent or received over the years? Have you ever thought about writing Jesus a Valentine s letter? Could you or I love Jesus that much? Jesus likes to hear from us; he wants us to share with him our deep and inner most thoughts straight from our hearts. For Valentine s Day people everywhere are giving cards, flowers, and special words to those they love. I am afraid Jesus may get forgotten. I want Jesus to know I am thinking of him with fondness and the highest regard. Will you take the time to thank Jesus for his love today?
MONTHLY PAGE 5 THANK YOU FUNDRAISING CONCERT FEATURING THE FRONT PORCH PICKERS Alan Bruflat, Jim Lindau and Brenda Nissen will bring their guitar, banjo and harmonica to Our Savior for a fundraising concert on Sunday, February 15 at 2pm in the church sanctuary. Haven House is a non-profit organization, which offers intervention and prevention services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. They have service centers in Wayne, South Sioux City, and Hartington, NE. Congregation of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Wayne, America, I want to say thank you and that we feel so incredibly blessed to have you as a partner. Every year before Easter and Christmas I receive a phone call from your church asking when you can come provide our residents with a program. I have come to know that the folks that visit us as well as the congregation as a whole are constantly praying for our residents and that is as big of blessing as we could ask for. The financial blessing you have bestowed upon us in recent years has been so great. It has allowed me to purchase gift bags filled with hygiene items and snacks for each of our residents to have for Christmas morning. I have to tell you that in a place that is so often forgotten or disapproved by many, we are able to take your gifts and put smiles on the faces of young people we work with. Please accept this Thank You card from our residents as our way of extending our gratitude to your congregation, an extension of the body of Christ himself!!! Sincerely, Jesse Jensen and the staff and residents of the Northeast Nebraska Juvenile Services Center SHARE YOUR BLESSINGS In an effort to provide continued support to the Wayne Food Pantry; each month we will designate particular items that the pantry is in need of. It is February and one thinks of Love. Along with February we think of Lent which is also associated with Love. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son to save us. In January I gave a report to Joy Circle about my Triennial Gathering experience in Charlotte NC in July and I too thought of Love as that weekend progressed. Love from one generation to the next and awareness was the theme for the weekend gathering. Everyone around us was giving hugs and gifts (Nebraska participants gave Kool Aid packets). I came home with tokens from many of the 50 states represented. There were four of us in our room. Our connection was that we all had done several Saved to Serve events together through the years. We did however each share our story with each other only to find out that God s unconditional love was the glue that kept us moving forward in our lives. All 2,400 women had a story to share. There were 40 Nebraska women who definitely stood out when together with our big red scarves. The key speaker for the weekend as well as doing workshops was Susan Sparks pastor of a New York Baptist church, a stand-up comedian, trial lawyer and breast cancer survivor. She kept us in stitches when speaking, but always with a message of love. I shared many tidbits from her book Laugh Your Way to Grace. Anyone wishing to read it may do so by picking it up at the office and of course returning when finished. Another keynote speaker, Becca Stevens, an Episcopal priest serving as chaplain at St. Augustine s at Vanderbilt University, is founder of Magdalene & Thistle Farms, a community and social enterprise that stands with women recovering from violence, prostitution, addiction and life on the streets. That is when I discovered the true meaning and magnitude of trafficking of women. Yes it is right here in Nebraska. In February we will hear more of what Jennifer Van Meeter has to say about the ways we can be aware of the magnitude of women being used and what we can do about it. With that thought in mind we encourage you to join us Wednesday, February 11 at 2:00 pm to hear what Jennifer has to say. Just come! Everyone is welcome. We were congratulated that we (Synodical Women of the ELCA) raised over $1 million through Katie's Fund. There are a number of ways the interest from this fund is used. Two movies I Believe You and Harvest of Empire are available for use at our synod office. Both documental movies pertain to the women in our society who are not heard for one reason or (Continued on page 9)
MONTHLY PAGE 9 (Continued from page 8) another. These movies were funded by interest from the Katie's Fund. Wife of the author of the book Roots had a standing room only workshop on the reasons we should journal or find some way to keep our family history going from one generation to another. Once again thank you for allowing me to have this opportunity to grow in my faith and meet these many bold women of faith. I would like to close by encouraging you all to think about attending the Northeast Spring Gathering in West Point on Saturday, March 14. Our Dorothy Wert is the coordinator for the event and it promises to be a great day of growing in our faith. Check the office for a registration sheet. Let me know if you are going and we can car pool. Your Sister in Christ, Phyllis WELCA President CHRISM MASSES AND CHILI WITH THE BISHOP The Nebraska Synod will once again offer Chrism Masses for rostered leaders; but this year, lay leaders will be invited for a time to connect with the Bishop and Synod staff as well. The Chrism Mass is a time for rostered leaders to gather for renewal of commitment to ministry in the context of worship and fellowship. This year's Chrism Masses begin prior to, and will continue throughout Lent. After each Chrism Mass for rostered leaders, lay members are invited to join in for "Chili with the Bishop," including time for conversation and a presentation and Q & A time with Bishop Maas. Rostered leaders are asked to register online on the Nebraska Synod website for the event they will be attending. Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne is one of eight locations hosting these events. The event will be Monday, March 16 beginning at 3:30pm with a gathering of rostered leaders. Dinner and Q&A with the Bishop will begin at 6pm. Lay leaders and other members of Our Savior s congregation should RSVP to the church office ( or oslc@oslcwayne.org) if interested in attending. There is no cost for the meal, but the advance registration will be helpful for meal planning. IN OUR PRAYERS... We remember in prayer those who were hospitalized since the last newsletter: Darlene Helgren, Norma Hansen.
