1 OUR SAVIOR LUTHERAN CHURCH WAYNE, NEBRASKA PRESENTS: MONTHLY The Mission of Our Savior: That all may know Christ, grow in Christ and joyfully go with Christ. God s work. Our hands. V OLUME XIX I SSUE 8 AUGUST 2014 Dear Our Savior Family and Friends, The annual Chicken Days and also the Wayne County Fair are both in the record books to draw on for happy memories. That means the new school year is just around the corner. This also guarantees that things around the church get busier too! As I write this, we are eager to hear from the pastor you have called to serve as your next Senior Pastor...as to whether her answer is yes or no. It is understandable that at least some will grow anxious during such an extended period. However, that is part of the process for us now. I am amazed at your patience during these years of waiting, and I love you for it. You have the essential 'ingredients' for a good congregation right now...even before the arrival of a new pastor. And what is that? You are a faithful people who love Jesus Christ...and as a profoundly grateful and humble people in-dwelled by Christ, you love God back and you love each other. We express that as we worship the Lord together on weekends as a loving family. We need to see each other as we offer up our praises to God and as we study and serve together in smaller groups. John encourages us, "If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another..." l st John l:7 He says further, "Friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God." 1 st John 4:7 What great promises! I have served in an associate capacity with both Interim Pastors, Bob Oleson and Sylvia Karlsson. I know, first hand, how much they came to love you and cherish a good number of friendships. It's been my privilege to serve along side both of them--and I proclaim to you--as I have to so many in this part of Nebraska and beyond...that you a wonderful congregation. Whoever comes as your new pastor is highly blessed to receive a call from you. Together with you in all hopefulness for a great future at Our Savior. 2 PAGE 2 V OLUME XIX I SSUE 8 SPIRITUAL FAITH FORMATION NEWS By Deb Hammer I am thankful for our faith community here at Our Savior Lutheran Church. There are many opportunities to know Christ, faithfully grow in Christ and joyfully go with Christ on our journeys. I would like to share some highlights with you of God Sightings that I have witnessed over the last few months. First Communion Classes were held in April through May with 13 youth taking part in the classes. The youth had a glow in their eyes as they participated in the classes with their parents. It was a joy to be a part of the journey as they prepared to take Holy Communion for the first time. A Baptismal Reunion was held on June 22 nd with several families taking part in a celebration to review our Baptismal Promise. Families came together at the Baptismal Font and gave each other the sign of the cross on their foreheads. The evening included a potluck and a splashing of water as they went to the swimming pool for some fun! The Micah Project helped me to grow out of my comfort zone by helping me reach beyond my growing edge. The Micah Project was to find 10 youth not currently involved in a church to send to camp to be part of a faith community to learn more about God. Prayers and perseverance helped Our Savior find 6 youth to send to camp. The joy to be able to gift the camperships to the youth that received them was priceless. Confirmation Camp at Carol Joy Holling was another joyful week. I was able to see God at work in the youth throughout the week. The challenge for the week was to work together in trust and unity. At the beginning of the week, the youth would talk over one another. By the end of the week, they were listening to one another. They learned to trust one another as they worked through activities like the trust lift or the trust fall. Vacation Bible School is around the corner. My God Sighting for VBS is the excitement that I see in our directors. I am looking forward to seeing them share God s Love with our Children. The Christian Education Committee has been working on upcoming events for this fall. I see the Holy Spirit moving in them in exciting ways as they prepare to grow in new ways. They are planning to have a 6 th ~ 8 th grade group meet on Sunday mornings during Sunday School watch for more details. Worship with Communion held at Emeritus at The Oaks and Careage of Wayne is another place that I see God at work amongst people. It is a joy to be part of the worship service with members of Our Savior that live in these communities. I enjoy watching them live the life that God has given them and see appreciation in their smiles as we share God s love with one another. I encourage you to think about what Spiritual Faith Formation means to you. Where have you seen God at work? Each month, I plan to present to you a new Spiritual Practice from one of my favorite resources, Spirituality and Practice by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat. Please enjoy this month s Spiritual Practice. (see page 3) SHARE YOUR GIFT! Would you like to help grow our Christian Education ministry? Do you have a gift for working with children or teens? Prayerfully consider serving as a Sunday School or Confirmation teacher. Please contact Erika Fink, Joelle Herman, Kelly Grone, Deb Hammer or the church office ( ) to find out how you can help.

3 MONTHLY PAGE 3 LEARNING TO BE CONTENT By Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat Discontent is woven into the fabric of our daily life. We eat breakfast and wonder why our usual cereal tastes bland. Driving to work, we find our attention drifting to the houses that seem nicer than our own or the beautiful vacation spots advertised on billboards. At the office, we listen jealously as a coworker talks about weekend adventures after we just spent one doing errands. At lunch, we go into a store and watch a super-duper television set we cannot afford. In the afternoon, we hear about someone's promotion and get upset that we are not moving ahead in our careers. By the time we get home again, a dark cloud of accumulated resentments and regrets has overtaken us. Our consumer culture with its omnipresent advertising pitches is designed to make us always want something more, better, or different. Even in times of national emergency, we are told to go out and shop, as if that will make us feel better. Yet religious leaders have long advised just the opposite. Quaker William Penn observed: "Seek not to be rich, but happy. Riches lie in bags, happiness in contentment." In Philippians 4:11-12, St. Paul writes: "I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need." What is he modeling for us here? When you know that you are loved by God and nurtured by family, friends, and community, you can simply be yourself and be satisfied with whatever comes to you. How can you practice contentment? Here are three simple ways. 1. Want what you have. This is a basic gratitude practice. Don't take your possessions for granted. Every day acknowledge what just one tool or object means to you and how it improves your life. Make a list of other things you are grateful for at the end of the day, and include thanksgiving moments in your prayers. 2. Don't make comparisons. Many of us go through the day comparing our situation with another's, and inevitably, it seems, we come up short, feeling either second-rate or deprived. The Baal Shem Tov, a great Jewish teacher, said, "Compare not yourself with anyone else, lest you spoil God's curriculum." Focus instead on what is unique about you your God-given talents and gifts. Then whenever you fall into the comparisons trap, say to yourself, "Oh, there I go again, making silly comparisons." 3. Accept your imperfections and the "lacks" in your life. Nobody is perfect, and few people get everything they want or even all they need. But we have been assured that none of this matters to God. God loves us as we are, faults and shortcomings included. THANK YOU VERA HUMMEL! Recently, a banquet was held at Camp Carol Joy Holling to recognize and thank Vera Hummel as she retires as Director of the Nebraska Synod Institute of Spiritual Direction Seeking the Spirit Within. Almost ten years ago, then-bishop David defreese and others identified a need for certified spiritual directors and a group was formed to generate strategies to respond to that need. From the meetings of that group, the Institute was born. As Director, Vera promoted the Institute, screened applicants, developed curriculum, oversaw/conducted all instructional activities, certified participants as spiritual directors at the end of each two-year program, provided post-certification reflective practice opportunities, and sponsored retreats for pastors and laypersons. She has directly led three cohorts in the last six years, resulting in certification of almost 40 spiritual directors sent to provide one-on-one direction to those desiring a deeper relationship with God. Be sure to thank Vera for her service when you see her! PASTORAL ACTS A funeral service was held Thursday, July 3 for Donna Claussen Donna died June 29, A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 29 for Bonnie Sprouls Bonnie died July 24, 2014.

4 PAGE 4 V OLUME XIX I SSUE 8 NEW ACCOUNTING SYSTEM AT OUR SAVIOR Because the ELCA recommends an annual CPA audit for congregations receiving more than $400,000 in offerings per year (which includes Our Savior), the Church Council has reviewed accounting policies and procedures at Our Savior and implemented changes to prepare for such an audit following the 2014 fiscal year. The review (conducted in accordance with ELCA guidelines) resulted in recommendations for stronger internal controls (especially increased separation of duties), adoption of computer software packages commonly used, rotation of duties (so more than one person knows how to and has performed each accounting procedure), increased documentation for transactions, and improved reporting for decision making. Initial conversion to Quickbooks occurred in late December and early January with other changes being achieved in stages. This is a work in progress with some benefits already being realized. Recently all job descriptions were updated for Director of Faith Formation (Deb Hammer full time), Minister for Pastoral Care (Ron Nelson part time), Office Administrative Assistant (Kris Robinson full time), Financial Ministry Assistant (Margaret Hansen part time), and Director of Music and Choirs (Mark Kanitz part time). Pastor Sylvia and members of the Executive Committee of the Church Council met with each person individually to ensure each understood his/her assigned responsibilities as well as understood he/she is subject to the authority of the Senior Pastor who is subject to the authority of the Church Council. More updates will be provided in the months ahead. OF THE FOUNDATION The third quarter meeting of the Foundation Board of Our Savior Lutheran Church will be held Tuesday, August 19 th, at 7p.m. All grant applications need to be turned in by Monday, August 11 th to be considered. Nelsen, ELCA pastor and former college and national educational organization president, is currently serving as University Minister for Advancement and Church Relations at Midland University, Fremont, NE. 5 MONTHLY PAGE 5 THANK YOU S... Evan Lubberstedt Thank you for choosing me for the Gordon M. Nedergaard Scholarship. I will use this scholarship to help get books for school. Thank you again. Jalyn Zeiss I just wanted to thank OSLC for the $100 scholarship. I will put that towards my college education at WSC. I wish to continue in my faith at OLSC. Have a good summer! Damon, Tracy, Devan & Betty Henschke Thank you very much to Margaret Hansen for the beautiful Prayer Shawls for Damon & Betty and to June Baier & Caring Cooks for a wonderful meal. On July 18 when some people gathered to wish me well as I retired from Seeking the Spirit Within leadership, there was a beautiful basket of flowers on the table. Only as the evening came to an end did I read the card and learn that it was from my brothers and sisters in Christ at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Thank you so much! The fellowship with all of you has been a significant part of my spiritual journey, and there are no other words except a deep, heart-felt thank you! Blessings and Gratitude, Vera Hummel Dear Members of Our Savior Lutheran Church, We want to express our gratitude for your contribution of $1,901 to the scholarship fund for the initial training session of new intentional interim pastors in the Nebraska Synod. Your generous gift helped nine pastors and one parish ministry associate discern whether God is calling them to this important ministry. They will have to attend a second course next year to complete their training. This training will prepare them to better serve congregations in the Nebraska Synod who are facing the challenges that transitions in ministry can create. Your generosity allows the Nebraska Synod to have more tools for handling the changes in ministry we anticipate facing in the coming decade. In gratitude for your partnership in the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ, we are your humble servants, Brian Maas, Bishop Rev. Bob Olesen Rev. Glenn Schacht (This was a special offering taken during worship at Pr. Bob s last weekend at Our Savior.) THANK YOU OUR SAVIOR LUTHERAN CHURCH! With my heart brimming with thanks and praise to God for our time together, I say a huge thank you and farewell! You are a congregation that is truly blessed to be a blessing, as God promises in Genesis. Keep on with it. Your past is strong and proud (in a good way) for serving in God s kingdom here and beyond. Your present is confident and ready for new pastoral leadership. Your future is bright with God s guidance and the power of the Holy Spirt pushing, pulling, cajoling, and cheering us on!! A special thank you to Byron and Barb Heier. They opened their home and their hearts they have fed me, let me use their washer and dryer, seen me with curlers in my hair, and we have often laughed together! I can t say enough about their generosity. Please make an effort to personally thank them for their hospitality to me. My next place to serve is as yet unknown, although a couple of places might work out for their needs and mine. I want to work less and be home more, as I am sliding into retirement years. I just turned 65 back in early July. Yet I still feel God s call to serve in the church of Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God. Pastor Sylvia Karlsson IN OUR PRAYERS... We remember in prayer those who were hospitalized in the past month: Lois Youngerman, Eveline Thompson, Rowan Wiltse, Helen Weible, Blanche Backstrom. YOU VISITED ME The Visitation Ministry Group meets to sign and send cards to church members and to share a visit with friends. In July 45 Thinking of You cards and two Sympathy cards were sent. Calls and visits were made. Please come and be a part of our Visitation Ministry Group. The next meeting will be Wednesday, August 20 th. For more information about this wonderful ministry, please the church office ( ).

Thanks to you the Women of ELCA at Our Savior Lutheran Church for helping me make this trip a reality. You paid for my registration. I am indeed grateful and looking forward to being with Nebraska friends and joining others from all over the country. I am excited about exploring and learning about other women as we have conversation about our faith journeys. Prayerfully I will be motivated to share these conversations with you when I get back. We all need to be rejuvenated once in a while to be good leaders. Am looking forward to connecting with Pastor Sylvia while there also. I am taking with me a quilt kit from the sewing group and a prayer shawl made by Margaret Hansen. Thank you for this contribution. In October I plan to share my experience with you all. On June 25th we held our Guest Night and it was a hit. We did get a host of thank you notes from the various churches. All were impressed with the food, program and of course the favors (hand knitted dish clothes). Again thank you all for the role you played whether you helped or participated in any way. In July at Joy Circle we were treated to hearing about Haiti from our sister in Christ Sue Olson who had first hand experience helping the group who traveled to Haiti in 2010 to assist in the medical care of the many young and old in need. She showed us slides that gave us a first hand view of what these people are experiencing to just exist. Thank you, Sue, for sharing your story. In response to this need we sent money to Orphan Grain Train to purchase a Global Sun Oven to be sent with the rice packages that will be hand packaged and sent to Haiti. In August we will not have Joy Circle, Rebekah Circle and Executive Board but we will have Visitation, Sewing, Tabitha and Charity Circle. Note times and places listed next to this article. Christian Service groups have been busy as usual. Since my last writing the weekend groups served the Saturday and Sunday celebration of connecting with our pastoral candidate, Pastor Muriel. The funeral group served the lunch for Donna Clausen s service. Donna will be missed by her church family. I will close with this thought The small change of human happiness lies in the unexpected friendly word. From Gods Little Book Of Proverbs. Hope you are having a fun filled summer. Together we are the Body of Christ, and serve Christ s church in the whole world through belonging to this local congregation of Our Savior. All of us are encouraged to lift up these families in prayer and get to know them. As we learned in the catechism written by Martin Luther, we are to speak well of our neighbor and interpret everything they do in the best possible light. Through the course of about a year, we will be able to pray through our directory. Of course any time you want to request prayers, please let us know on the bulletin tear off sheet or call the church office.
