1 OUR SAVIOR LUTHERAN CHURCH WAYNE, NEBRASKA PRESENTS: MONTHLY The Mission of Our Savior: That all may know Christ, grow in Christ and joyfully go with Christ. God s work. Our hands. V OLUME XVIII ISSUE O CTOBER 2013 Dear Friends in Christ, A few years ago I ran across a essay about Autumn. Autumn is perhaps my favorite time of the year. For whatever reason, it is a time that brings a sense of wholeness in my life. I do not remember the author of this essay but I would like to share some of it with you. It is entitled Autumn: The New Body. Autumn is melons and mists, purple grapes that cling to the vine and cornstalks that soldier the fields. It is thanksgiving. There is dancing and laughter beneath a magic, orange moon. Ah autumn, a time that brings the joys of life to fruition. If you have traveled through the farm land in autumn, do you remember the harvest time? If so, you can sense the relaxed afternoon shadows, they are long and lean. Even the sweat and toil of my uncle's work is over and the promise spring made to his South Dakota farm so long ago now vibrates with reality. The Spirit of Love has done his work. Even the earth too feels this and tastes its deep flavors. Autumn also brings with it choices and decisions. I sense my own heart molding new convictions, finding new purpose and commitment in choosing my path, discovering my direction. It has become a time of rebirth for me; I have begun to recognize that the quality in my life is most important, not so much what I accomplish. So as a Christian I am called to live not for myself, but for Him who died on behalf of all. ADULT FORUM ON SUNDAY MORNINGS Adult forum meets on Sunday mornings at 9am in the multi-purpose room. Upcoming topics of discussion are as follows: October 6 The State of Seminary Education and Mobility with Betty Heier. October 13 Called to Be Faithful with Rev. Bill Shaner. October 20 Bible Study with Pastor Ron Nelson. October 27 Report of the Churchwide Assembly with Deb Hammer, NE Synod delegate. November 3 Spiritual Cinema with Pastor Bob Oleson. November 10 In the News with Pastor Bob Oleson. (A look at current happenings in the news and how it relates to scripture.) Such a promise of new life! "Thanks, Lord" Pastor Bob

2 PAGE 2 V OLUME XVIII ISSUE 10 CROP WALK October 13 Our local CROP Hunger Walk is a great place to start doing something about the hunger and poverty that continues to plague our world. For a few hours and a few miles, friends and neighbors will be coming together to, in the words of I John 3:18: "...love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action." On October 13 at 1:30pm, the Wayne Community CROP Hunger Walk will be held to show our love and active concern for neighbors in need near and far. The registration will begin at 1:00pm at Our Savior Lutheran Church. The participants, r a n g i n g f r o m n e w b o r n s t o nonagenarians, will be raising funds to change the world in real and measurable ways providing seeds and tools so that people can grow their own food; digging wells that will bring clean water to villages; helping communities and families rebuild after disaster. Whether it's responding to devastating floods across the central U.S. or the Gulf Coast, or helping a village in Myanmar or Guatemala grow food, CROP Hunger Walks are making a difference. The letters CROP mean Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. CROP Hunger Walks help global neighbors in need through self-help development programs, refugee assistance, advocacy, and disaster relief. And, its important to note that 25 percent of what we raise will help our local food pantry and the Wayne ministerial association in their important work here in Wayne. So please mark your calendars and come CROP Walk with us! Together with your family, group, or congregation we can walk to change the world, one step at a time. And if you can't walk on that day, or just want to broaden your horizon of sponsors, you can walk on the Web with us. Visit cropwalkonline.org to find out how. For more information, please contact Deb Hammer at , or visit SOAP FOR LITTLE HANDS October is Soap for Little Hands month for Wayne area churches. As we have done for the past 4 years, we are collecting soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes for the children along the Mexican border. Missions served in the past include, Meadowlark Ministries, His Hands Ministries, and Christo Rey Church and Mission and now we are adding Your House of Hope, a shelter for battered women and children in Pharr, TX. Meadowlark will deliver our gifts into Progresso Mexico in time for Christmas. Please, no used bars of soap, as we cannot use them because of health concerns. A Soap for Little Hands bucket will be in the narthex during the month of October. Monetary gifts may be left at the church office. Contributions will be packed by the Outreach Committee for delivery in mid- November. Undies Sunday! There continues to be a real need for children s underwear; so the last weekend of October (26 & 27) will be Undies Sunday at Our Savior! If you want to help, just bring children s underwear, sizes 2 thru 12 and place them in the basket in the narthex. These items will also be packed, along with the soap, toothpaste and brushes for delivery to the Christo Rey Church and Mission near Pharr, TX. 4 PAGE 4 V OLUME XVIII ISSUE 10 A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT CALLED TO BE FAITHFUL As you know we are all being Called to be Faithful in our stewardship campaign this Fall. Many times people think stewardship is only about money and although money is essential to continue Our Savior s mission and service, stewardship is also a call to share your gifts! This year we would like you to consider the other resources you have to offer along with your monetary gifts. These resources are your time and talents. Many of you may think you have no talents, but as you read on, I hope you realize you do. In John 6:9, Jesus prayed for and multiplied five loaves of bread and two fish into enough to meet the needs of all the people and then some. In this story, the boy may have felt like he had nothing to offer because it was too little. Many times we feel the same way, but we need to remember that God has called us and equipped us to be faithful in our unique roles. Maybe you are good with kids, maybe you are a morning person and make a mean pot of coffee, maybe you are good at yard work, or maybe you like to read in front of groups. Whatever your gift (big or small), please consider offering it to help Our Savior move forward in mission and service. There are already many people at Our Savior who share their gifts. Here are some of their stories and how they got started sharing their time and talents. We hope their stories will inspire you! You always feel good after you do something for others Erika Fink God has given us a lot and I think we need to give back with our time, our talent, and our financial resources Dave Olson It s a joyful feeling to know you are doing something good to help the church on earth. Lila Splittgerber Why did you first volunteer? It was at my mother s suggestion Dave Baier If there is something you think you might like, I would say GO FOR IT Joan Baier If you don t have volunteers for the church, the church won t survive Rod Hefti Why do you volunteer? To help the church Johnson boys It is really rewarding to watch the children grow Megan Stalling Volunteering is very exciting and you should not be afraid to volunteer because we are all nice here Bailey Bentjen Don t second guess yourself-help because it is worth it Dillon Wieland Our Savior always appreciates your financial gifts, but we want you to know your time and talents are equally valuable and without your gifts we cannot do all the good work done at Our Savior. On the weekend of October 12th & 13th you will receive an interest survey (see example in this Newsletter) along with your estimate of giving card in church. We ask that you take time now to look over the interest survey so you will be ready to complete the form during worship on October 12 th & 13 th. We will also take time to celebrate on October 12th & 13th with an all-church family meal following both worship services. Lasagna, garlic bread, a garden salad and dessert will be served. No reservation is needed, simply join us for worship and stay for the meal! A free will offering basket will be available.
