June 18, 2015 It has been a long season of disquiet in our country. From Ferguson to Baltimore, simmering racial tensions have boiled over into violence. But this the fatal shooting of nine African Americans in a church is a stark, raw manifestation of the sin that is racism. The church was desecrated. The people of that congregation were desecrated. The aspiration voiced in the Pledge of Allegiance that we are one nation under God was desecrated. Mother Emanuel AME s pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, was a graduate of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, as was the Rev. Daniel Simmons, associate pastor at Mother Emanuel. The suspected shooter is a member of an ELCA congregation. All of a sudden and for all of us, this is an intensely personal tragedy. One of our own is alleged to have shot and killed two who adopted us as their own. We might say that this was an isolated act by a deeply disturbed man. But we know that is not the whole truth. It is not an isolated event. And even if the shooter was unstable, the framework upon which he built his vision of race is not. Racism is a fact in American culture. Denial and avoidance of this fact are deadly. The Rev. Mr. Pinckney leaves a wife and children. The other eight victims leave grieving families. The family of the suspected killer and two congregations are broken. When will this end? The nine dead in Charleston are not the first innocent victims killed by violence. Our only hope rests in the innocent One, who was violently executed on Good Friday. Emmanuel, God with us, carried our grief and sorrow the grief and sorrow of Mother Emanuel AME church and he was wounded for our transgressions the deadly sin of racism. I urge all of us to spend a day in repentance and mourning. And then we need to get to work. Each of us and all of us need to examine ourselves, our church and our communities. We need to be honest about the reality of racism within us and around us. We need to talk and we need to listen, but we also need to act. No stereotype or racial slur is justified. Speak out against inequity. Look with newly opened eyes at the many subtle and overt ways that we and our communities see people of color as being of less worth. Above all pray for insight, for forgiveness, for courage. Kyrie Eleison. The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton Presiding Bishop Evangelical Lutheran Church in America 2

Sunday, June 28, 2015 Ordinary Time Lectionary 12 Setting Ten 9:30 AM (ELW) INTRODUCTION A woman finds healing by touching Jesus' cloak, and a girl is restored to life when he takes her by the hand. In both cases a boundary is crossed: in Jesus' time the hemorrhaging woman was considered ritually unclean, polluting others by her touch, and anyone who touched a corpse also became unclean. In Mark's gospel Jesus breaks down barriers, from his first meal at a tax collector's house to his last breath on the cross as the temple curtain is torn in two. We dare to touch Jesus in our "uncleanness" and to live as a community that defines no one as an outsider. Welcome! Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise (Psalm 145:3, NIV). We gather to praise our God and Savior. Welcome! Visitors, welcome to Macedonia. Please talk to one of today s ushers if you have any questions or need help. We would like to make your worship with us more accessible and meaningful. The worship service is from the cranberry colored hymnal. Page numbers refer to the front of the hymnal. Hymns are numbered in the back two-thirds of the hymnal beginning with all 150 psalms. For your convenience, our ushers can assist you with Hearing Amplification Headsets. Youth Activity Bags are also available in the back of the Luther Hall. Your child will find age appropriate books, crayons and other assorted items within the bag. After worship, please leave the bags at church so that others can enjoy and use each week. Our Nursery is located in the Educational Building and opens around 9:15AM. Staffed by one adult and one teen, your child will enjoy books, toys, games and playmates. If you need directions, please ask one of the ushers. Holy Communion Believing in the real presence of Christ, and by the invitation of the Lord, all are welcome to the table to celebrate Holy Communion. This sacrament, a tangible sign of God's grace, love, and forgiveness, in and through bread and wine, was instituted by Jesus on the night before his death. When it is time for Communion, please come forward at the ushers' invitation. Let those serving the bread know if you, or your children, would like a blessing in lieu of communion as you come forward. Reception of Communion via one kind (consuming only bread or only wine) is as valid of reception of the sacrament as consuming both bread and wine. The Altar flowers are given to the glory of God. Please remember in your prayers: Dr. Bob James, *Ron Mills, Janice Fitch, *Betty Sigmon, Pastor Gary Weant, *Alex Peter, Jim Grahl, Jan Davis, *Greg Myers, Grace Ray, Ellen Merrill, Herb Voelkert, *Tom DeLoache, *Bob Hentze, Ethel Tomes, George Keck, Helen Keck, Rick Dodson, *Tom Macklin, *Buster Goodman, Grady Howard, *Roger Meisenbach, Rick Barry, Gladys Spencer, *Lettie Carlson, *Lisa Thigpen, *Buster Goodman, Dawn Savkovic, *Charles DeBoard, Trudy Groff Mary Hillhouse, and the family of Wilmer Hillhouse. 3

VOLUNTARY Stand GATHERING Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen. PRAYER OF PREPARATION CONFESSION God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. For self-centered living, and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness: For longing to have what is not ours, and for hearts that are not at rest with ourselves: For misuse of human relationships, and for unwillingness to see the image of God in others: For jealousies that divide families and nations, and for rivalries that create strife and warfare: For reluctance in sharing the gifts of God, and for carelessness with the fruits of creation: For hurtful words that condemn, and for angry deeds that harm: For idleness in witnessing to Jesus Christ, and for squandering the gifts of love and grace: FORGIVENESS In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for Christ s sake God forgives us all our sins. Through the Holy Spirit God cleanses us and gives us the power to proclaim the mighty acts of the one who called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. GATHERING HYMN 247 Come Now, O Prince of Peace OSOSŎ GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, we implore you to hear the prayers of your people. ANTHEM Kyrie John Leavitt Family Choir FIRST READING Lamentations 3:22 33 Pew Bible, page 937, OT A reading from Lamentations, chapter three. THE READING BEGINS Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM 30 Cantor intones the first half of each verse. Congregation responds with the second half of each verse. will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lift- ed me up and have not let my enemies triumph over me. 2 O LORD my God, I cried out to you, and you restored me to health. 3 You brought me up, O LORD, from the dead; you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. 4 Sing praise to the LORD, all you faithful; give thanks in ho- ly remembrance. 5 God's wrath is short; God's favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping spends the night, but joy comes in the morning. 6 While I felt se- cure, I said, "I shall never be disturbed. 7 You, LORD, with your favor, made me as strong as the mountains." Then you hid your face, and I was filled with fear. 8 I cried to you, O LORD; I pleaded with my Lord, saying, 9 "What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you or de- clare your faithfulness? 10 Hear, O LORD, and have mer- cy upon me; O LORD, be my helper." 11 You have turned my wailing into dancing; you have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy. 12 Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever. 1 I 5

Classroom Closet supports public, charter and private schools in Alamance County by providing a well-stocked resource store where teachers can 'shop' for needed supplies. After an annual membership fee of $25, teachers can shop (for free!) 4 times a year, once each nine weeks. We know teachers dip into their own pockets to supplement their students needs. By providing the Classroom Closet, we can do our part in preparing each student for the competitive world they face in and out of the classroom. During the summer months, we will be asking you to supply particular school items each week. You can place your contributions in the blue tub marked ACE. As school supplies are put on sale in the weeks leading up to school re-opening in the fall, it s a great time to shop for these much-needed supplies.
