1 Macedonia Evangelical Lutheran Church August 2, 2015 Ordinary Time Lectionary 18 9:30 Worship Service 1
2 Sunday, August 2, 2015 Ordinary Time Lectionary 18 Setting Ten 9:30 AM (ELW) INTRODUCTION Apparently not satisfied by Jesus feeding of thousands, some who were there press him for a sign of his power; perhaps it is daily manna they want. As always in John s gospel when people want a sign, Jesus offers himself. He is the bread come from heaven to give life to the world. He calls us to come to him and believe in him, and through that relationship to know the one who sent him. Welcome! Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise (Psalm 145:3, NIV). We gather to praise our God and Savior. Welcome! Visitors, welcome to Macedonia. Please talk to one of today s ushers if you have any questions or need help. We would like to make your worship with us more accessible and meaningful. The worship service is from the cranberry colored hymnal. Page numbers refer to the front of the hymnal. Hymns are numbered in the back two-thirds of the hymnal beginning with all 150 psalms. For your convenience, our ushers can assist you with Hearing Amplification Headsets. Youth Activity Bags are also available in the back of the Luther Hall. Your child will find age appropriate books, crayons and other assorted items within the bag. After worship, please leave the bags at church so that others can enjoy and use each week. Our Nursery is located in the Educational Building and opens around 9:15AM. Staffed by one adult and one teen, your child will enjoy books, toys, games and playmates. If you need directions, please ask one of the ushers. Holy Communion Believing in the real presence of Christ, and by the invitation of the Lord, all are welcome to the table to celebrate Holy Communion. This sacrament, a tangible sign of God's grace, love, and forgiveness, in and through bread and wine, was instituted by Jesus on the night before his death. When it is time for Communion, please come forward at the ushers' invitation. Let those serving the bread know if you, or your children, would like a blessing in lieu of communion as you come forward. Reception of Communion via one kind (consuming only bread or only wine) is as valid of reception of the sacrament as consuming both bread and wine. The Altar flowers are given to the glory of God. Please remember in your prayers: Dr. Bob James, *Ron Mills, Janice Fitch, *Betty Sigmon, *Alex Peter, Pastor Gary Weant, Jim Grahl, Jan Davis, *Greg Myers, Ellen Merrill, *Marge LeBarron, *Carlton Boland, Herb Voelkert, *Tom DeLoache, *Bob Hentze, Ethel Tomes, George Keck, Grace Ray, Pastor Sam Shores, Helen Keck, Rick Dodson, Grady Howard, *Roger Meisenbach, Dawn Savkovic, *George Strassburger, *Charles DeBoard, Trudy Groff, Rick Barry, the family of Robert G. 3 VOLUNTARY Stand CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Kneel/Sit Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the creator of wind and rain, field and ocean, the bread of life coming down from above, the power at work within us and this world. Amen. Before God and in the company of our sisters and brothers, let us confess our sin. God and Father of all, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. We have thought better of ourselves than others. We have told lies, said hurtful things, acted in ways we wish we could take back, and looked the other way when action was needed. In your mercy, O God, forgive us, cleanse us, and heal us, for the sake of Jesus, our Savior. Amen. If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; everything has become new! In Christ, + you are a new creation: your sins are taken away and you are made new. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Amen. GATHERING HYMN 480 O Bread of Life from Heaven O WELT, ICH MUSS DICH LASSEN GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. O God, eternal goodness, immeasurable love, you place your gifts before us; we eat and are satisfied. Fill us and this world in all its need with the life that comes only from you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 4 PSALM 78 Cantor intones the first half of each verse. Congregation responds with the second half of each verse. Stand 23 So God commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven, 24 raining down manna upon them to eat and giving them grain from heaven. 25 So mortals ate the bread of angels; God provided for them food enough. 26 The LORD caused the east wind to blow in the heavens and powerfully led out the south wind, 27 raining down flesh upon them like dust and flying birds like the sand of the seas, 28 letting them fall in the midst of the camp and round a- bout the dwellings. 29 So the people ate and were well filled, for God gave them what they craved. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION ELW page 129 GOSPEL John 6:24-35 Pew Bible, page 119 NT The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. THE READING BEGINS 4 The Gospel of the Lord. 7 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, The hard but undeniable fact of deeply embedded racism in American society has come to the fore in painful ways this past year through high-profile occurrences of racial discrimination, hatred and violence including racially motivated killings. As Lutheran Christians, what should be our response and witness? As members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, how are we called to confront the sin of racism? We need to talk and we need to listen, but we also need to act. As one important step in this process, I invite you to join me and William B. Horne II, an ELCA lay leader and member of the ELCA Church Council, for a live webcast conversation on the complexity and implications of racism on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 8 p.m. (CDT). Through our church s social statement Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity, and Culture the ELCA collectively has expressed its calling to confront racism and advocate for justice and fairness for all people. You can read this social statement here. In addition, I have made several public statements on behalf of the church recently on this subject. Those statements are available here. God s intention for all humanity is that we see the intrinsic worth, dignity and value of all people. Racism undermines the promise of community and fractures authentic relationships with one another. As Christians, though, we live in the conviction that the church has been gathered together in the joyful freedom of the reign of God announced by and embodied in Jesus. That reign has not come in its fullness, but the message of God s yes to the world breaks down all dividing walls as we live into that promise. I urge you to deepen your involvement in and commitment to this important work to which we all are called. I believe our live webcast on this topic on Aug. 6 is one useful way for us to pursue this together, and I hope you will view and take part in it. You may read more about this webcast at where a link to the live webcast will be embedded. A live stream also will be available at Twitter hashtag is #ELCAConfrontRacism. If you would like to submit a question to be considered during the live webcast, please send it to livinglutheran@elca.org and provide your name and your congregation s name, city and state. Join me for this important conversation. Your Sister in Christ, The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton Presiding Bishop Evangelical Lutheran Church in America MACEDONIA VIEWING Thursday, August 6 8:45 PM Luther Hall 7
