Eskritt Sixth Sunday after Pentecost June 30, 2018 July 1, :00 p.m. 9:30 a.m. OUR MISSION: To proclaim the love of Jesus Christ, invite others to participate in our faith community, and be a blessing to all in word and deed. A woman finds healing by touching Jesus cloak, and a girl is restored to life when he takes her by the hand. In both cases, a boundary is crossed: in Jesus time, the hemorrhaging woman was considered ritually unclean, polluting others by her touch, and anyone who touched a corpse also became unclean. In Mark s gospel, Jesus breaks down barriers from his first meal at a tax collector s house to his last breath on the cross as the temple curtain is torn in two. We dare to touch Jesus in our uncleanness and to live as a community that defines no one as an outsider.

P: Trusting in the word of life given in baptism and the love of God poured into our hearts, we gather this day with faith and joy to worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 6 ORDER OF CONFESSION P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But we know that nothing is able to separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ. Therefore, if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then open ourselves to the Lord and each other and confess our sins in penitence, faith, and hope. O most merciful God, C: we confess that we remain captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS P: Hear the good news! In raising Jesus from the grave, God shatters the power of sin and death. You are no longer captives, but are set free. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Death has been swallowed up in victory. Even when we were dead through our trespasses, God has made us alive together with Christ by nailing those trespasses to the cross -- by grace we have been saved. Go, rejoicing in the knowledge of this salvation to serve God and one another. C: Thanks be to God! Amen. 6

ANTHEM A Woman Healed By Jesus - Dramatic Monologue Karen Westerlind Hans, actor WE HEAR THE LESSON Lamentations 3:22-33 The book of Lamentations is one of our most important sources of information about the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians in 587 B.C. Though the people admit that God s judgment was just, today s reading declares a fervent trust that God will not leave them forever. L: This is the Word of the Lord. 8 ^ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE GOSPEL ^THE GOSPEL Mark 5:21-43 Jairus, a respected leader, begs Jesus to heal his daughter. A woman with a hemorrhage is ritually unclean, treated as an outcast in Jewish society. Both Jairus and the unnamed woman come to Jesus in faith, believing in his power to heal and bring life out of death. ^THE GOSPEL RESPONSE ^CONFESSION OF FAITH The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven 8 and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Call Committee completed the site visits in June where we worshipped with and experienced pastoral candidates in their own congregations. We were extremely pleased with the results of our trip and have invited the final candidate to visit American Lutheran Church (ALC) the weekend of August 3 6. That weekend, the candidate will be introduced at both services Saturday and Sunday. During coffee, following the Sunday service, a meet and greet the candidate opportunity will be available to the whole congregation. Following the candidate s visit, we will determine the appropriate next steps. The most positive outcome would be a recommendation to the Church Council that ALC issue a call to this pastoral candidate. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide us in this process.
