1 Ascension Lutheran Church P.O. Box S. 5th Avenue Coon Rapids, IA March 2018 Christ Lutheran Church P.O. Box S. Elm Street Jefferson, IA March is National Professional Social Work Month. In recognition of the work that LSI does on behalf of children and families, I m sharing the latest LSI Letter and Story in our newsletter this month. March is National Professional Social Work Month, a time to recognize social workers and thank them for all they do. At Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI), we re grateful for our many social workers who have dedicated their lives to serving their communities! Maybe you ve never had a social worker involved in your life. Yet, whether you realize it or not, you ve had the benefit of their behind-the-scenes work in your community. Social workers help people help themselves in overcoming life s most difficult circumstances or managing challenges of everyday living: poverty, abuse, mental illness, depression, addiction, disability, and many other situations. Iowa wouldn t be the same without the patience, guidance, and empowerment that social workers provide. Happy National Professional Social Work Month! If you would like more information, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI s director of philanthropy and church relations, or Deborah.Whitford@LSIowa.org. Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Learn more at and A Home Full of Love Cheryl s Story Many of Cheryl s favorite memories involve raising her two children, watching them thrive, and counting the shoes in the doorway each night to see how many of her children s friends she would be making dinner for. As her children grew up, Cheryl knew there were more Iowa youth who needed a loving family and support system like hers. That s when her family began adopting. We were a welcoming family, and we really didn t want that journey to stop, Cheryl says. Since starting her journey as an adoptive parent 20 years ago, Cheryl has welcomed 19 adopted children into her family and her children range from ages 9 to 35. They come from different backgrounds and cultures, and Cheryl says it s been enriching to celebrate those differences in her home. Iowa has a great need for more foster and adoptive families like Cheryl s. She says it has been a learning experience to raise so many different children but together, her family has found lots of love and laughter along the way. People will say to us, God bless you that you ve done this. We don t see it that way, Cheryl says. We see it as how blessed and thankful we are to have a family that s so big. Peace and blessings! Pr. Terry We hold up in prayer For healing: LaVerne Christensen, Rod Raygor, Anna Snizek, Karen Bossard, Jay Rosdail, Deloris Brede, Shirley Hoyt, Melba Smith, Paula Murphy, Jeanene Baker, Fereleen Acton, Brandi Stormer, Marlin Adams, Mary Dayton, Cindy Moore, Tommy Moore, Emma Dahl, Avril Shahan, Tammy Reynosa In long-term care: Joyce Hansen & Rebecca Franzeen

First order of business was election of officers. Dianne Jensen offered to be President, Marcia Young offered to be Secretary. Brandi Stormer offered to continue as the Vice President. Harry will continue to be Treasurer, Larry Miesner as Property Management, Laura DePenning as Music and Worship, Twyla Brede as Christian Ed. Harry Shackelford moved to elect these individuals to these council positions. Marcia seconded, and all were in favor. Motion carried. Dianne Jensen opened the meeting. It was agreed that we publish and contact information for all council members so that the congregation has it available, and we will be installing the group at a future worship service this spring. Discussion was held on the 60 Seconds of Scripture that Pastor has been providing to KGRA for broadcast 2 days a week, at 5:10 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Cost is $19.35 per week which is a shared expense with Christ through the Community of Faith ministry. This is the only church contact to this area at KGRA. After discussion, Laura moved and Harry seconded to continue with program, and all approved. Secretary minutes were approved; Harry presented Treasurer s report. Dianne moved to acknowledge Deb Smouse for her janitorial work by sending a card with a $50 gas card. It was suggested that we may want to visit with her to see what future services may need to be considered as a new part of her service contract. Souper Bowl was a great success. Other church future functions discussed included a Mexican-themed feed and fundraiser, and RAGBRAI coming back to Jefferson. Treasurer s report was approved as presented.
