4 PASTOR S REPORT TO THE CONGREGATION 2017 was an exciting year full of worship and study, on the part of both the congregation and myself. We ve continued to partner with Ascension Lutheran in Coon Rapids in Community of Faith Ministries, and have shared events on occasion in both communities. We look forward to finding additional areas of common ground in the coming months. Although there had been anticipation that studies would end during the early part of 2017, God had other ideas, and the path through seminary was enlightened by an additional, but very blessed, course that was completed successfully in December. We look forward to the culmination of the program over the next few months not as an ending, but more as the beginning of the next phase. As a congregation small in number but large in spirit, we continue to be challenged by a society that views church differently than in the past. As we pray for God s guidance to meet those challenges head on, we also search for ways to carry God s mission into the world in love for neighbors. As a member of Western Iowa Synod, we also look for ways to explore the many looks of mission and stewardship and seek to grow our relationship with God in ways that reflect God s plan. The past year has included a birth within the congregation as well as the joy of hosting a wedding for an ELCA couple from Minnesota. I was blessed to serve as clergy for a funeral for a family with roots in this area. These moments may seem minor in some ways, though not at all to the people involved, and they continue to show God s reach in grace extends well beyond our walls. Blessings in Christ -- Terry Ann Mogensen, Pastor REPORT FROM THE COUNCIL PRESIDENT It is hard to believe that 2017 is in the rearview mirror and 2018 is upon us. I hope that the past year has brought all of you many blessings and that 2018 will be just as blessed. It has been a busy year at Christ Lutheran Church. We have continued to grow our faith through book clubs and Bible studies. We had another fantastic year for our day camp and TLC. I hope that our weekly radio spots can continue to reach those in our communities that need those words of encouragement the most. The details of the reports inside I hope will open your eyes to more of what we have accomplished this past year as a congregation. We have many challenges ahead as a congregation as I m sure others across our Christian faith can empathize with. Although our numbers may be small, I believe we have a good foundation to continue to build our church, not only in attendance but in our outreach efforts as well. We look forward to helping and watching Pastor Terry grow in her role as a spiritual leader. It is not only important for her to lead and guide us, but for us to realize that we are also there for her to lean on us when she needs. I look forward to seeing Pastor s growth in the coming years as she equips us as her congregation to go out and live Christ s example in this world. It is my sincere hope that all of us at Christ Lutheran Church can continue to grow our individual faiths through piety, study, and action and continue to grow as a church family. In today s world where we as a people seem to be drifting away from Jesus and God s word we are reminded how important it is be a Christian light for others. I would like to thank Pastor Terry, members of the council, and the Christ Lutheran congregation for another successful year. Jake Bohnet, CLC Council President Page 4

5 2017 PROPERTY REPORT 2017 began with setting up a five person "Grounds Crew" that took turns on a weekly basis with mowing and general yard maintenance. A big thank you to our mowers, flower bed folks, any all who helped keep the Church and grounds looking great! We are always looking for people to help with mowing and general yard work. If you are interested in joining our grounds crew, let me know. There will be some tree trimming/removal scheduled for this spring, and we ll be looking for help with that and some other spring cleaning. More information to come. Our "Little Library" continues to be a success. Books for all ages are being placed inside, and if you have any to donate, please let me know. Thanks go especially to Jim and Jacque Andrew who financially sponsored a professional rejuvenation this year of the garden area on the northwest corner of the property. Respectfully submitted by John Schoening, Property Chair 2017 CHRIST LUTHERAN EDUCATION COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT Education Time/ Sunday School Christ Lutheran values life-long learning and offers a variety of activities and resources for spiritual growth opportunities. A brief Sunday School for children was available following worship. Prior to worship, adult Bible studies discussing the upcoming weekly Gospel lesson were facilitated by lay members through the use of the Taking Faith Home (TFH) resource. This weekly resource, TFH was also inserted in Sunday bulletins for members to individually read scripture, reinforce religious practices/rituals and reflect on their faith during the week. Based on the lectionary, these included activities for households of all ages. Several all-congregational activities were held throughout the year to prepare for the seasons of Holy Week. A Mardi Gras meal was held before Ash Wednesday and during Lent, families were invited to a fellowship meal on Wednesday nights followed by weekly mission presentations. ELCA s God s Work, Our Hands Sunday was held Sept. 10 and we packaged food for the ARC. A special event, Breakfast in Bethlehem was held on Dec. 19 and highlighted the symbolism of the new Chrismons on our tree. A Bell Choir provided music. Ecumenical Bible studies were held at 8:00 Wednesday mornings at Greene Bean Coffee Shop. Pastor Terry led Bible Studies at the care facilities and senior living residences regularly. Reformation 500 Events Throughout 2017, activities were held to commemorate the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation. During Lent, we challenged Trinity Lutheran LCMS to join us in wellness activity called A Walk with Martin Luther. This culminated with a Diet of Worms spaghetti supper and entertainment on April 23. CLC hosted the showing of the newly released film, Martin Luther, The Idea that Changed the World on Oct. 25 in the Greene County High School Theater. A fall Reformation Fair was held at CLC on Nov. 5 with the roasting of the Papal Bull and many reformation games. Several guests attended from Trinity. A group from CLC also attended the Reformation Celebration in Ames on Oct. 15. Page 5

6 TLC (Tender Loving Children) On the third Wednesday of each month, several youth in grades 1-5 gathered at Christ Lutheran for an afterschool program. Each session included a Bible lesson, snacks, music, a craft, and activities. This year the young people focused on seasonal Biblical themes of each month. A bowling party was held in May. Adult volunteers for the program included Roger Aegerter and Jan Rosdail. LYO (Lutheran Youth Organization) In February, the high school youth supported the Souper Bowl of Caring event and raised $168 for Lutheran World Relief. Twenty-eight food items were also collected for the Greene Co. Christian Action Resource Center (ARC). Confirmation A confirmation class was offered this year with one participant. Kaitlin Tjostem helped with the Souper Bowl of Caring, worked with her mother on a world hunger mission presentation. Pastor Terry taught and will continue to lead the sessions and set expectations to be met for the completion of the requirements. Day Camp Christ Lutheran hosted Riverside Bible Camp s annual Day Camp on June This year s theme was Rooted based on Colossians 2:6-7. Twenty-one campers representing 5 area churches attended during the week along with four camp counselors and four helpers. The kids performed at Regency Park on Wednesday morning and at CLC during the evening. Campers also assembled 21 mission kits for LWR. The day camp staff was housed at the homes of Marcy Barlage and John/Kathy Schoening. The Homecoming BBQ fund-raiser was held Sept.29. Although we had very small attendance, we collected $989 and qualified for a Thrivent gift card of $250. The account also has funds for youth camp and events. Year-end balance $ Christ Lutheran is a member of the Riverside Association and the Ingham-Okoboji LBC Association and encourages participation in their programming throughout the year Envisioning Christ Activities Book Club- Read The Hiding Place, Heaven is for Real, The Shack. The group met weekly and culminated each book study with the movie of the same title. Envisioning Monthly Gatherings: No monthly activities were done in 2017 Other Activities Several members of Christ Lutheran participate in an ecumenical bible study on Wednesday mornings at the Greene Bean coffee shop. Members of Christ Lutheran assist with packing food and volunteer service at ARC and other food pantries in Jefferson; they volunteer at Regency Park, GCMC Long Term Care in service and devotional activities; and volunteer as well as Webb House, a local teen activity house sponsored by the United Methodist Church in Jefferson. 7 CHRIST LUTHERAN WOMEN OF THE ELCA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT All women of Christ Lutheran are part of women s ministry known as Women of the ELCA. Some women participate in monthly Bible studies, some coordinate events, some serve for special occasions, some donate food, some attend retreats, some represent CLC at trainings and events, some support our missions with financial gifts, some lift up others in prayer, etc. There are three mission areas, Discipleship/Mission Growth, Justice/Mission Community, Stewardship/Mission Action, that help define our purpose: As a community of women, created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world. Christ Lutheran Women met monthly for Bible study on the third Wed. at 7:00 at church. Leadership team: Coordinator- Jan Rosdail, Treasurer- Luann Bohnet, Missions- Kathi Meyer Justice/Mission Community helps build a more just community by supporting local families through contributing requested items to Adopt-a-Family and ARC food pantry. Stewardship/Mission Action helps with mission projects for others in need: This year 21 health kits and 48 school kits were delivered to Lutheran World Relief. Discipleship/Mission Growth helps women grow in faith and leadership: The women used the W/ELCA magazine Gather for monthly Bible Study. Copies of the publication were ordered by each participant at a cost of approximately $20 per year with two extras ordered by our unit. Jan. April study was a Reformation Bible Study using Paul s letter to the Galatians. In May, 10 Prayerful Reflections for our Faith Journey was the theme. The women s mystery trip took a group to Webster City for the production of the Church Basement Ladies on July 9. 8 2017 WORSHIP COMMITTEE/ALTAR GUILD Altar Guild members: Ruth Broman, Dixie Mengel, Bev Murphy and Luann Bohnet. Altar Guild has the responsibility of caring for the worship space and setting up communion weekly. The congregation ordered flowers, and a cross was placed in the sanctuary for Easter. Memorial Day flowers were ordered and planted in the flower planter under the sign. Replanting was done, as the deer ate most of the flowers planted. Plantings were also added to the flower garden by the garage. All Saints Sunday was celebrated with candles. The church was decorated for Christmas by members of the congregation and poinsettias were placed. A listing of liturgical colors for the benefit of Altar Guild members is included with the Host Team information on page 9 of this report. Thank you to all who shared their musical talents with a special kudos to the willing hands who reunited to ring bells in December. A special thank you to all members of Altar Guild for sharing their time and talents, as well as anyone who stepped in to help on short notice. Thank you to Christ Lutheran members for their support, help and prayers. God s work, our hands! Respectfully submitted by Ruth Broman and Luann Bohnet 2017 HOST TEAM REPORT Following an attempt at a new system for providing volunteers for worship service and fellowship during the first six months of 2017, it was determined that the new system of having people choose their own dates and duties was not working very successfully. Over the next six months, a new plan was proposed, developed and is being put into place effective with February Many thanks go to both the people who graciously volunteered to fill in the gaps and to the group of church council members who worked out the upgrade going into effect shortly. A list of the first six months assignments begins on the next page, and everyone is reminded that reading scripture is now a totally volunteer opportunity for ministry and no longer a part of assigned worship duties. Another item that is totally volunteer is the provision of food for fellowship time, and any treats a person chooses to bring are enjoyed to the fullest, but not required. The liturgical colors are included with the Host Team members but this is information that only Altar Guild members may need HOST TEAM SCHEDULE & LITURGICAL COLORS FOR ALTAR GUILD New responsibilities of host teams include: Welcome and assist worshipers beginning at 8:45 AM. Light candles, take up collection, direct & serve communion Serve coffee. Treats are no longer expected, but are always welcome; they are not required. Clean-up and put away communion ware Wash coffee cups; empty and clean the coffee pot. Page 8

11 2017 FINANCIAL RECORDING SECRETARY REPORT 2017 yearly statements were delivered to your mailbox folders. I hope that the report of your offering matches the amount that you think you gave to the church. If it doesn't and you need it corrected for tax purposes, please let me know and I will get you a revised statement. The job of the Financial Secretary is to record and track the financial stewardship of the congregation. I would like to remind you of what is included in the reports that I produce. First, money gifts that are reported back to you are those that are documented. Money given directly to someone else and not through church records is not reflected in my numbers, since I have no knowledge of it. Second, the only gift that can be reported is a check, or cash that is received in an envelope with your name on it. There is no way to track loose cash in any offering. Gifts included in your statement are composed of amounts from special offerings, designated gifts, Sunday school offerings, Lenten offerings and regular weekly offerings. Also, the cost of other gifts such as Bibles, Christmas ornaments, paper, computer supplies, etc. can be added to your offering statement. Members did an excellent job of continuing regular financial support even when they weren't in church every week, and I would like to commend the congregation for that. Please keep in mind your stewardship for 2018 as you write out your monthly or weekly checks to the church. Expenses for the church continue whether you are here or absent from church. Also, don't forget other areas of stewardship. A comparison of offerings from recent years can be found in the following table for regular Sunday offerings only. The total 2017 offering including Lent, special offerings, gifts, ARC donations, donated items, etc was $50,893 when all offering items are included. This total excludes monies from outside sources and represents a $1,000 increase from Sunday offerings were down about $4000 from As of year end, please note that we have a decreased number of giving units compared to last year at 21. Also note that we had a couple Sundays with no services so there was no income those days.
